At the start of the year, I started a "30 day Want List". If I want something I made a note of it, and if after 30 days have passed I still want it, then I buy it. Each day, I spend doing a 15 minute declutter. The kitchen's been done, and now I'm in the bedroom. Things bought this year are a towel, tea towels, and a milk jug.
Maghouin Beg I do this with my daughter, because every time we went to Target she thought she needed to get a new toy. I'm not quite at the same level ad you, but I have been saving money. lol
I started slowly purging and organizing my home about a year ago. A drawer at a time. My house really isn't that bad. What stopped me from shopping was realizing how much money I was wasting - all that stuff being donated was my hard earned money going in a bag. I want to enjoy experiences, road trips, outings or save for something nice! Great video.
I've been really good at this for many years now. I have a little saying that helps: "the world is my museum". Another one is "just because I like it doesn't mean I need to own it".
I've been living by the second phrase for the past couple years. I go into stores and will look and browse the isles but I now have self-control to not buy every cute thing. Instead I pick it up, enjoy it and put it back. It helps me take note of things I actually want and need and then if I really want it, I can come back and get it.
'Just Stop' so true. I stopped going to the mall and pretty much every store. The only reason to go shopping is if you truly need an item. It should be specific..food, soap, toothpaste. If I go into a store, odds are VERY high I will buy something. So I stay out. I try to online shop. I put items in my 'cart' and don't buy until the next day. Most of the time I no longer want it. I have saved a lot of money by doing this. Just give it 24 hours and think about your purchase.
Oh, that's a great bit of advice to wait 24hrs. I think acting out of impulse is something a lot of us struggle with, especially with online shopping. I'll have to try that myself.
My mother was a champion shop-a-holic. She spent SO much time in Target. True story: when my youngest son got his first job--at Target--he was watching the Target orientation video when all of a sudden, guess what--there was his grandmother. On the video. He sat up and yelled, "Oh my god, that's my grandma!" :)
I recently switched up my grocery shopping... I was spending beyond my budget and buying fun foods which didn’t help my waistline or wallet. So I started doing my groceries online and was able to track my total and avoid impulse purchases. Now I’ve been under my budget and eating less junk food too! Double win! Plus I save time just picking it up from the store too! Highly recommend it!
Great video! I've never been a shopaholic, but I've hit a point in my life where I'm tired of all the junk we have. I'm not shopping anymore and instead using my time to declutter and deep clean my home. I've made a list of projects to work on around the home.. It's an amazing feeling - having room and only taking a few hours to clean my house. I've also made a rule that if I buy something new (like a piece of clothing) then I have to get rid of something. I'm mindful of that when I shop.
100% relate to this, me and mom would shop together ALL the time when I was younger and so, when I got older I shopped ALL the time. Now I can't stand it and dread going into the stores when I actually need something. Been loving you videos :)
What helped me to stop shopping was taking on the mindset that I will only purchase higher quality items that I need and love. I'm on a tight budget, so that means I have to save and be mindful of what I really need. So when I'm at target and see a cute top for $20, I don't have much interest. In the past I loved to buy thing because it was "good deal" and I had so much stuff that just sat in my closet with tags on.
Yes!! This. I'm much more on board with spending more money for a high quality piece of clothing that will last longer and typically feels better to wear. I also used to struggle to pass up a bargain. In fact, it's still hard, but I'm better than I was.
LOL I loved this; I always told my children shops/mall are not playgrounds / entertainment. i love that you are decluttering etc I found that when you get rid of the detritus it brought the things you actually loved closer.
My key to not over shop is to make a list of needs throughout the week and then Stick To The List. It's such a sense of accomplishment when I go home with only the things I went to the store for.
if anyone wants to borrow my three children to take shopping with you...i promise you'll never want to go again. ;) just kidding. kinda. they sure cured my shopping habit.
I totally agree. My twin girls are now so hard to handle, so that I only go WITHOUT them ... I love them from the bottom of my heart but I' d rather do this alone... Just for my inner peace :)
Yep! Pregnant with number 4 and Hubs works 60 hours a week...shopping is the last thing I ever want to do!! I have to take them grocery shopping 99% of the time so I’ve come to hate shopping!
I set a goal for myself that as soon as my last Christmas gift was purchased and wrapped I would not shop (with the exception of perishables like food, toiletries, etc.)until the end of June. I went from December 23, 2016 until just recently when I had to cave because I needed - genuinely needed - sandals for work to replace the two pair I have that are over five years old, some warm weather clothes to fill out my now 75% smaller wardrobe, and some lingerie to replace things that are absolutely worn out. One thing that has helped me a lot is that I am super driven once I set a goal and I have to say that makes it much easier to stick to my plan. I also have had the same experience you describe in this video - shopping annoys me now! I am SUPER mindful of how much I'm spending, whether what I am purchasing something I genuinely love (I refuse to spend money I work hard for on "junk" that will just become clutter ever again), or if I should hold off and take time to explore other options. I no longer have a problem waiting and my closet now consists of pieces that are well loved and have earned the right to take up space in my home. 😊 It's been a slow and steady journey toward a sleek and chic state of minimalism and I'm not done yet. It is a non-shopping work in progress!
I love your channel! I also am a very messy person trying to take on a more "minimalistic" life. Not the extreme that other people take it to but like you said, having less. It makes me feel better knowing there's more of us! Keep on cleaning!
I was also addicted to World of Warcraft. It took up about 8 hours of my day for 8 months. I didn’t want to go out or do anything else. I just stopped cold turkey and quickly got over it too. Now to stop my shopping addiction! Thanks for inspiring me. Just did my kitchen and wardrobe. Boxes in the junk room next. Love your channel.
Use mind tricks - Think of the fact that Target & other companies spend boatloads of $ studying shopping behavior --- all to MAKE you buy. Let this make you ANGRY! Say to yourself, "Oh no you don't! I AM in control of what I DO!!!" ---------------------------------- We do things we want to do & then rationalize a good reason. This comforts us. STRIP the emotional joy OUT of shopping by keeping tight hold of whatever STRONG emotion empowers YOU. Remember: YOU & your TIME are more VALUABLE than ANYTHING you CAN EVER BUY!!! ***Full disclosure*** I am an admitted hoarder committed to reform. This video series is a blessing to us who struggle with addictive behavior. I can relate to the video game addiction too. THANK YOU RACHEL! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!
I'm glad I'm not the only one who shut the stores down with their mom as a kid. There's nothing like it. It felt so great. But, I can't tell you the last time I did it. Glad I shook the habit, just like you are! From one Rachel to another... happy decluttering!
I love watching your videos because I want to have less stuff lying around, but I have a really colorful, textured, eclectic style. Other minimalists are all white and clean lines, but that could never by my style. You inspire me ❤️
Thank you! I'm really glad I can inspire you! I love that colorful eclectic style too... :) We have have less, but still have COLOR and texture. :) Good luck with your own journey!!
My phone!!! UA-cam os my weekness!!! lol as Im watching..... But, I've been watching channels like your that get me motivated! And Ive been trying to watch them when Im relaxing.
This took me so long to learn, honestly. I have bipolar disorder, and one of the oh-so-fun side effects of that is a lack of self control, so I was constantly buying and buying and buying. It took a long time and a lot of work but dang, I am so happy I've worked hard to let go of that habit so I don't fall into it when I have bad days.
Besides avoiding stores, I also started making lists. If I need a pair of shoes, I write down the type of shoes I'm interested in and when I go to that store, I have a narrower focus. My crux is online shopping, it feels so... fake, it's easier to add a couple things to the cart! So what I did was stayed off those sites for a month. It gave me some distance, and I'm more likely to be level headed when I pop over to one now.
I'm glad you posted this because I was wondering if you'd grown up in a shopping addicted or messy household. You've broke the cycle. I love this video, have a couple friends who need this reality check.
This made me crack up, Rachel! It reminded me of the Bob Newhart episode where he was a therapist, and he told the person who was having all this anxiety, and weird thoughts, etc, and he said "Stop it! Just stop it!" and then the session was over and he asked for his fee. It's so true about stopping the shopping...I've saved so much time/money lately by not even going to the stores, but I do shamefully fall back in to it at times... I really enjoy your videos and it motivates me to go tackle some clutter. :)
haha, glad you enjoyed it :-D I'll admit, I've definitely had moments in the past where I slipped and bought worthless stuff. But I've been going strong for a long time now and it feels great. Take care - and good luck with that clutter!
Absolutely going through the same thing right now. I looked around and thought "Wow... I have a lot of stuff." and came to the realisation that shopping is a problem for me. Never had a shopping marathon with my mom, but somehow I still developed a bit of a need for stuff. I really appreciated the advice to "Just Stop." It really IS that easy. It is. Don't add things to your shopping cart online or in store. Thanks for the video.
I was addicted to W.O.W. too! I thought you seemed a kindred spirit of nerdiness! Some hide it well, and you do, but yep, you're one of us! me and the better half,(also a woman btw) played to play together at first, then just kind of lost all desire to exist in reality. We each had a ton of lvl 80s, when that was the max, and we just flat quit. Gotta admit, i still have the occasional "wouldnt it be nice" urge to play, but nothing like it used to be. LOL'ed several times at the "just stop shopping", its so what I need to do, I am very much the person that suddenly discovers upon spotting items that we NEED them, and then after I get them home Im like "oh god, what have I done?" whereas when i just don't go, we are actually perfectly fine without all that stuff.
haha - yep I know EXACTLY what you mean! My hubby and I often reminisce of our days in WoW and have similar "wouldn't it be fun to have just ONE more binge weekend?" But we've made a pact that we're done with those days! It's just too addicting. I still think back to my Main and how badass her transmog attire was...! Okay..snapping out of it now. hehe :)
I'm counting on you to help me (no pressure) I am in dire straights. becoming a hoarder is a possibility but I'm hoping that recognition of the problem is HALF THE PROBLEM! I pledge to stop shopping. God and you help me.
I went to a third world nation. It's actually what started me on a minimalist lifestyle. When I saw people happy while they lacked so many things that I've been taught are essential. It showed me I could be happy with very little too. :)
Love it. I haven't been to a third world nation before, but i think often of aboriginal tribal life that I've seen in documentaries and have similar feelings. A simple life can be a good one.
So I went to Vietnam, considered a third world country and was shocked into minimalism due to so much stuff everywhere there! Just junk and bits of crap literally everywhere. It was overwhelming. I read four books on decluttering whilst there.
I find if I have the craving to go shopping and HAVE to go check out things, I hit the second hand stores so if I do impulse buy it's only a couple dollars haha. Or if I go into a store I love, I leave my cards in the vehicle so even if I find something I REALLY want, I have to go all the way out to the car to get my card which makes me decide if it's worth it! I also find by shopping less I really appreciate the things I do buy!
Just watched your video and I’m addicted. I’m going to binge watch while finally going through all my many memory boxes. Enough’s enough! I feel like I’m drowning. I emptied my room, took a break and found this. My question to anyone. How do I stop when I have to replenish for my antique booth? I can’t pass up a great deal when I know it’s a great deal! Ok, enough procrastinating, back to my mess and your videos. At least I’ll be entertained while finally doing this. I’m 54, so there’s a lot of memories. Wish me luck, lol!
Target is my weakness, it is my last resort now. I think looking at all I have has helped with my shopping addiction. I'm like you, I want less, but not sure I will be like a hard core minimalist. Surrounding yourself with only things you love and use is my ultimate goal. I've been doing great at not buying a ton of books but still working on Ebay. After my last auction ends, I'm going to try and forget that site exists for while. I'm going to keep a list of stuff I actually need and try to follow it. Re-evaluating my basket before checkout using the KonMarie questions can be very helpful.
I am so excited, I am a shop -a-holic. I’ve listened to a lot, (I mean a lot) of people on UA-cam about being one. You are the first ever , to say it like it is. I’ve been really trying. But I’m gonna do it... thank you so much for your truly Inspirational videos.
I hate shopping but if I have to go out and do errands I feel like I deserve a treat and if I am in town anyway and have a craft store coupon.... but the last couple times I had to do errands I did not buy any treats:) after getting rid of so much konmaring my craft space it is hard to bring more in.
Hah, yeah I hear ya - it helped me to 'treat' myself to things like ice cream or a nice lunch (or experience) instead of a tangible item. But coupons can be hard to pass up...! I also stay away from those now too unless I sought out the coupon for something specific. :) Nice work on resisting the last couple times out!
shopping feels like a trick. the pricey are not really on "sale" they pump popcorn and cookie smells in the room to make us want to stay and buy more. I just feel like cattle when shopping so I try to get it over with quickly if i have to do it at all. I can go MONTHS and not enter a store at all. My husband who is very budget cautious does the grocery shopping and cooking for us so I am not in stores for that stuff either. the other thing I notice is the latest gadget like tv, phones, tablets, jewlery, if everyone is like oh have you seen the latest 4k tv then many people flock to buy it. . . if it is an apple watch, or virtual reality goggles I am not interested. I can't take it with me when I die and I don't want to be buried alive in things I can't find
I have actually finally admitted that I am addicted to shopping. My credit card debt was through the roof for the 3rd time, and my husband bailed me out AGAIN!! We had a long discussion about shopping and I admitted that yes, I was addicted but I had honestly been trying to stop (mainly because I couldn't use my credit cards anymore). But because I had been trying to stop, I find it is getting a little easier. I found myself walking around Target looking at everything the other day, we don't have Target in Canada, and wanting to buy so much. Finally, I got frustrated and just said "NO". I have to stop! And I walked away. I do feel a little sad about the whole thing, but just looking at what I am saving is helping. Thanks for the great video, you're providing excellent advise to people like us. Don't stop! ❤️
Sounds like you're on the right path. No doubt it will be hard, but even recognizing and knowing you need to stop is huge. I wish you the best of luck!! :)
I can totally relate on the World of Warcraft.. I'm 31, female, married, and so addicted to that game. The only thing that ever stops me from playing, is not being able to afford the monthly subscription for a period of time. I get the dreams, all the time.. You have officially become my favorite youtuber ^_^ ❤
Thank you rachelle Last year i watched your videos including this one and with decluttering my home removing 60 big bags out of the house Rarely go shopping the feeling of organized home is so great and if i think of buying any thing is of true need and has a place for it or replacing old thing Or else if does not have a home or where to put it? I then donot go shopping i have more relaxing time coming from home and relaxing best regards and wish you all the best
Funny, I was just talking about this. I've decided every time I think of shopping I'm going to do some type of workout. Whether it be just a long walk outside, 30 minutes at the gym or a 20 minute HIIT at home. The positive side of this is that I like to shop A LOT so I should look pretty good come summer. FINGERS CROSSED! ;-) If the urge to shop still arises, I'll watch a few videos on healthy meals and then go shopping at the supermarket...not Target!
Yes! I actually order my groceries online now. It helps me a lot. And I haven't been shopping for fun in years because we have been living paycheck to paycheck. I got over it! It was a habit! I dont go to thrift stores anymore! I used to love them!
SO TRUE !! I've improved myself so much by not shopping that now i can go to a shop, and if i don't find exactly what i want i can go away without buying anything ! I still have to be carefull and sometimes remember myself «don't buy it, you don't need it!», but i've mainly lost my shopping habit.
Seriously, Rachel...you're talking directly to me. My current hobby is binging on UA-cam while doing chores. I never played WoW, but I was very into EverQuest 2 several years ago.
Life throws you a divorce or a horrible illness or job loss or other life bump and can force you to stop going to stores. But hopefully you will figure it out before bad life bump! There are so many senseless videos on the latest store “haul” Idiotic! Hoarders want company in their debt and messy lives so they try to lure in others. Your message is so great! Really enjoying you. You are so spot on.
I used to shop for clothes, shoes, colognes and other stuff just to find out that I wasn't even gonna use half of the stuff. Now I just go to the store when I really need (not want) something and with tunnel vision to what I went there in the first place. Also making a list helps a lot.
100% yes! I've tried all the things: make lists, wait 72 hours, wait 30 days etc. but non of it works, I still shop. Just saying no and stopping is definitely what I need. Thanks for brutal honesty 😄
I recently discovered your videos and have watched them all. As others have said the realism in your videos is a breath of fresh air. Your videos have motivated me to finally deal with all of the items inherited from my mother and for that, I am so thankful. I decided to comment on this video because W.O.W has actually been my hobby for a number of years, so it seemed appropriate. /played= 264. Keep up the great work, you are a beacon of motivation!
I can totally relate to your WoW addiction. There was a while there where i was addicted to Overwatch (another blizzard game). When I wasn't playing, I was looking up videos about techniques on how to improve myself on the game. I actually had to stop cold turkey in order to end my addiction. I ended up filling my life with a bunch of other more productive tasks, and now I can go back to the game on occasion just to hang out with some friends. It's no longer a need for me. I don't need it for that fix. I'm also on a similar journey of cleaning up my life. I've started exploring minimalism, konmari method, decluttering, morning routines to get the day started, and blogging about it. It's pretty much how i found your channel. Its great to see you go through your items and find all these items that are 100% interesting, but that you're realizing you don't need. It seems like your energy has changed as well for the positive. Keep up the good work. I subbed, and i look forward to your future videos!
Great advice. This totally works. I did this a few years back when I was trying to get out of debt. I just didn't go to certain stores. I stopped going to Target and got groceries elsewhere. I limited days I would go shopping.
it's good to find out I'm not the only one that had the shop til you drop mentality. My mom and I have had nights like that. Your actually doing the 2 things I have set out to do this year. Go from messy to tidy and to stop shopping. I'm going to try your suggestions thank you
This is definitely my favorite video of all time! I'm planning a wedding so not shopping has been my biggest challenge. Mainly because I'm technically always shopping for wedding stuff so I can't avoid online and in person shopping. But this video is always a good reminder for me not to go overboard. 🙈
Ooh Im guilty of shopping out of boredom. I'm definitely not a shopaholic in anyway. But it certainly is a habit I need to break as a new aspiring minimalist. Great video!
I am SO hooked on watching your videos! You have great presence, edit well and you just seem so down to earth. You struggle like the rest of us, and it is easy to relate.
I have been following you videos and it all makes sense to me. About this topic of shopping, well speaking only for myself, I allowed myself to spend on things I really do not need, on the basis that Yeah, I work I can afford this, even if they are not basic, need, important, most times just whims and end up with tons of items that is sitting occupuying space and accumulating. Since I stopped, shopping, I realized, I do not have to buy each time I go out just because I can and it is liberating.
I can relate to this video so much. My mom was/is just like your mom. I also loved WOW! I am going to try to break the shopping habit by doing a no spend January. I feel like we have so much stuff including groceries because I coupon that I don’t think I’ll need anything other than fresh fruit, milk and bread for a month.
So I have binged a lot of your videos.... but the fact that you played WoW is awesome! I don’t play anymore but at one point mained a blood elf hunter and she was SO badass! I remember binge playing and doing raids and such.... so addicting! I have a ps4 now and still play video games but nothing near those WoW days. Hahaha
Ex-WoW player female type here as well, stopped a couple years ago. Also on the way from messy to minimal, love the channel and what you have to say, please keep it up! I found that only carrying cash and having an allowance helps immensely, I used to balk at the idea but my bank account thanks me =)
This sounds kinda insane but if I find myself like "I *really* need nail polish remover" I add it to my Amazon wish list. Then, I only buy things the weekend after the 15th of the month. By that point I usually have quite a list of random things that I should really pick up and a few things on the list I no longer actually need. In the store I pull up my Amazon wish list on my phone and shop from it. This also helps me pay a better price because I'm instantly comparison shopping (I can always go home and order from Amazon if it's the better deal) and I'm not wasting gas running to town (45 minutes away because we live kinda far out) every few days for items that cost less than the gas it took to get there. Downside: that means bras and underwear were on my amazon wish list for 2 weeks after I cleaned my closet (those bras were so worn out they weren't gonna spark joy for *anyone*) but hopefully anyone who checked my wishlist knows me well enough to know what I was doing. lol. It took a while for me to adjust to not shopping every few days but in the end it works!
If you end up falling off the wagon by buying things you don't need, make sure that you return them a.s.a.p. You will feel happy and releived when you do this.
What I think is the best thing to do is have an organized closet, and then you can see if something actually needs to be replaced or fixed or thrown out or donated. For example your red sweater is falling apart and you want a new red sweater. Easy and you know thats all you need to buy.
I think it has something to do with having a healthy attitude towards shopping (or gaming for that matter ;)). If I go shopping I have a (digital) wish list with me, essentials that I really need, this helps me to stay focussed and not splurge. I love your video's, I've started decluttering my house since January, and slowly it is taking form here. Don't forget to find everything you keep a "home" which it should return to when you're done with it. Keep up the good work!
I think you're right about that (re: healthy attitude)! And I agree.. I'm useless without a list. I end up in all corners of the store wondering what I'm even doing..! Thanks for watching!
Love listening to you.... I had a similar childhood well not out till 1 am shopping ( all the time... but on vacation where they had stores that opened 24 hours) we did that. And went shopping 3 times a week. And later I would feel guilty if i didn't buy something in a store I went to. I had a closet full of clothes at my home, at my hostel and later i just piled up here in USA. I realized I had a problem. So this year 2017 I started with not buying clothes ... at all... So far its been 2 months it's been difficult but I am still on track. I have so many clothes I have never worn I am excited about this summer. :) And like 10 13 gallon garbage bags full of clothes gone... feel a lot lighter...
I ABSOLUTELY agree with all of this! I have found that shopping online is helpful. Even for groceries. I've been going to Wal-Mart.com and buying my groceries. They'll even pack them up and put your "order" in your car for you! Very cool! Easier and quicker...for me anyways. Thanks for the mutual inspiration!😊
I kinda do what Maghouin Beg does. When I go on Amazon I put things on my want list. It boggles my mind that 1-2 months later I don't want some of the stuff anymore. A few times I couldn't understand why I put something on the wait list at all. You think you HAVE TO HAVE IT. That feeling is so powerful. Though for me... if I can get myself to walk away, then most of the time I find I didn't need it or even really wanted it. STOP = WALK AWAY for me.
Me. Too. Amazon is absolutely addictive! It's just too easy!! I've been trying to curb my Amazon spending for the past 6 months with no success. I've even tried erasing my credit card info and giving my credit cards to my husband to take with him to work. No joke. But there was another comment here that talked about a 30 day want list. I think it just might work for me.... it's a compromise, right? It's not that I can't buy anything from Amazon, I just really need to discern what's a need and what's a want. I'm going to try it. Wish me luck....
I know this is a super late reply but I used to buy soooooo much useless crap on Amazon. I would buy something almost every day. I have a lot of downtime at work so I shop while I'm making money so it always felt like it was practically free. It's definitely not. The way I finally (mostly) broke the habit is now if I see something I want/need, I put it in my cart. I am allowed to fill my cart with every impulse thing that I want. But then I go through and hit "save for later" on everything. With the exception of actual, true NEED items that I do buy when I actually need them, I only buy items from my "save for later" pile. These items are WANT items not need. That way I have to give the item a second look. I have to re-read the reviews. I have to think about why I want it. Half the time I end up deleting the item from my "saved" items all together. It has drastically cut my Amazon shopping down by about 75%. I also make a point of actually returning items. I have PRIME so returning is super easy but I used to never return anything because I would think "meh, it wasn't that expensive" but all those unused $8 and $15 items add up fast.
Trying to go week without shoping at a time. Then by the end of the week, if i really need it, i will get this. Helps money management, self control and helps to cut my addition of shopping. You are right- the often you do shop, the more you get into habbit, the more you are on the road of addition. Makes sense to me - if i need it the following and the next day after that, it must mean that it is something essential. If not, to me it means, oh well, it was just an urge. Not sure if that would work for everybody tho
i love your videos. I started this mindset about 3 years ago & my life is so much better. im also purging my junk...the donations to the thrift store are so huge im humiliated. Keep up the good work.
It's so true. I don't really buy stuff except for food. I had to buy some new bed sheets 2 days ago with a $9 coupon and 30% off and I was like "this is weird, I haven't shopped in a long time". Just don't go to the stores. Stay away and use your time decluttering :)
Great advice. There are SO MANY "Haul" videos on UA-cam, it's insane! It blows my mind that people will spend hours almost every day going from store to store to store- Marshalls, Home Goods, Ross, TJ Maxx, DSW, Target, JoAnn's, Hobby Lobby, etc buying stuff they don't need and won't use because it's "such a good deal I couldn't pass it up"And don't even get me started on Dollar stores! Most of that stuff is going to end up in a landfill within month of being purchased. I would rather spend my money on one nice $100 item than 100 crappy $1 items. When you get to the point in life where you have the necessities and you aren't living on a shoestring any more it's time to INVEST in good quality items that will last for years and be a joy to use and have around.
I recently saw one of those too... holy moly! I didn't even know that was a thing! I see the appeal (rather, my former self sees the appeal...), but I can't imagine bringing home all that stuff.
Totally correct! I don't have a problem shopping at all but when I hVe a break from my kids I stroll around malls and shops. That's when something catches my eye. It's always random breaks so I can't plan meetings with friends. It's hard to find an alternative hobby where I can spontaneously get there or leave it.
Ah, I hear ya. That does sound tough. I went through a knitting kick a while back and when I had extra time, even while out and about, I was turning on a podcast or book on tape and knitting. ...def not very exciting sounding, but it always felt really good!
Love your videos. You are an inspiration. I was addicted to WOW too, and also basically to any video game. I did the same, I simply don´t have any games, not even a really simple one in my phone. Because I know if I did I will be expending so much off my time playing, time that I will better be outside with my family. I also came from a hoarders family and I´m afraid of or the clutter that is on my parents house. I´m starting a home of my one and trying to avoid all of the behaviors that I know growing up were bad for me. Also I´m totally guilty of the ¨What if¨ mentality. Your videos give me guidance. Keep up the great work.
lol my husband was laid off and found a new great job, but makes half of what he used to make. Instant shopping stopper!! Plus I used to be able to walk to the mall!! now I have to drive, far fewer trips to the mall!
This is the reason why I stopped going down the chip and snack aisles (I am an appetizer fiend). I am now at a place where I can go down those aisles if I need something for a party, and not come back with 10 unnecessary items, but this concept really does work. Just stop. You won't be tempted to grab useless junk (whether it's stuff in general or food) if you don't see it. You probably don't NEED anything down that aisle or in whatever department, so don't go into that area at all. (I also have the same issue with MMOs as you did. I can't help it. I love them. Am currently not playing any so I can actually enjoy life and finish non-MMO games.)
I have the Target Dollar Spot problem. I've even driven to stores in a different town to purchase certain items I've seen in Haul videos! Yikes! I decided I REALLY need to stay out of Target. So I'm thinking about just doing a subscription for the things I regularly purchase there.
me and you have the same mind set. I did the exact same thing. just quit cold turkey. it definitely was hard. but now I just enjoy not shopping. it gives me so much more free time
I really liked your videos as it was, given that you're very real about things. But now that I know that you're also a recovered WoW addict, I think you're becoming one of my favourite UA-camrs! :)
Also, with books, I made a list of the books I'm reading this year and also if I could get them at the library. That has helped me a lot. Also the thought of eventually having to move them all...
Just subscribed to your channel and watched all your videos why cleaning and organizing my kitchen. Love your getting rid of stuff videos, My kitchen is the worst and often becomes a dumping ground. Especially the amount of glasses and mugs we have. Shopping I have cut down a lot and only get what I need, and I have a small store of decor pieces, so if I get the urge to buy a decor piece then I just swap it with something from my store, which I have only kept what I really like, and if something does come into the home then something must go out. xxx
Thanks for subscribing. :) My kitchen (and dining table) are trouble areas for me too...That's awesome that you're able to stick to the 'one in, one out' method. I find I get so attached to things that it's hard for me to implement that tactic! Maybe the 'new me' will be able to tho! :)
Ok, I already subbed yesterday when I found this channel bc this house is my house and your videos make me feel like I actually stand a chance of cutting out all the crap. But now you've mentioned WoW and I know I'm in the right place. lol
I've been on a low-buy this month. I say low-buy cause I did buy some new face wash I didn't technically need but I didn't like my current one very much. But anyways, the first week and a half was really rough but now it seems more second nature.
I order my groceries online for free and pick up in the parking lot-don't have to go in. Saved me. The place I get my produce isn't near any shops I love so I make sure to go there on way to an appointment so I can't 'quickly take a look' anywhere else. Online shopping-clear your history cache so you have to fully type in all the websites so takes longer-this helps.
GREAT VIDEO girl! LOL omg! I'm happy I found your channel! sometimes you need to dig a little deeper and it truly isn't that simple! it sometimes is a long ass journey of learning and growing and failing lol after you get to the core of the issue and replace it with different, healthier, habits...then it becomes a little easier 🙈🙈💖 truth! self control!
You're absolutely right. I need to not go to a store unless I have a specific list of items to buy because then I can't resist the temptation of just buying one little thing...the little thing turns into a few things and that adds up over time. My other way to resist is to think "Do I want to debate whether to toss, donate, or sell this later? Is it worth it?"
I agree! I don't even like shopping anymore either! I only shop productively and we love amazon so we can type one item and get what we need and not waste time window shopping
Hi Rachael! I just found your channel and have been kind of binge watching to get caught up. Packing to move, so......having to go through many years of "stuff"! Your videos have been entertaining, encouraging and helpful. Keep up the good work!
Rachel great words of wisdom :). I don't like shopping so I don't really understand. I enjoy you and videos; always great content, keep doing what you're doing you rock my friend :)! Have a blessed day.
something that helps me so much is imagining how the item was made (usually in China or Bangladesh in horrible conditions) . I swear this helps :) I watched the documentary "The True Cost" too, I recommend it 😊
Oh, thanks for the recommendation. I agree that helps a lot. I've been getting into vegan/cruelty free products - because while I'm not vegan, the making of this stuff is on my mind.
I am a garage sale shopper. Love the prices and gems that I find. I now know that in the summer I have to make myself drive by them. I have been off garage sales for about 5-6 years now. I have to admit that I have been to 2 in that time. I had to say NO to myself a lot while shopping.
love your personality but it's simple really. just started on my closet and literally got two big suitcases and said "I'm only keeping what can fit in here and I'm throwing away stuff I've brought and never even worn. Had work uniforms from jobs two years ago, why? why am i keeping this stuff. But keep up the videos!
Great idea!
Maghouin Beg I do this with my daughter, because every time we went to Target she thought she needed to get a new toy. I'm not quite at the same level ad you, but I have been saving money. lol
Good idea!
Love this idea
I started slowly purging and organizing my home about a year ago. A drawer at a time. My house really isn't that bad. What stopped me from shopping was realizing how much money I was wasting - all that stuff being donated was my hard earned money going in a bag. I want to enjoy experiences, road trips, outings or save for something nice! Great video.
Yes, the money-savings are huge! (not to mention, when I shop I tend to eat out as well -- which isn't cheap either!)
I've been really good at this for many years now. I have a little saying that helps: "the world is my museum". Another one is "just because I like it doesn't mean I need to own it".
I love both of these sayings. :) I'm going to start thinking about my home being my museum - I think this may actually help!
I dread it too! I always feel like it's such a waste of a time. Funny how that changed. Thanks for watching! :)
That's what I'm hoping for as well! I'd like to just have the items I really love and value, instead of 'spreading my love' over a bunch of junk.
My key to not over shop is to make a list of needs throughout the week and then Stick To The List. It's such a sense of accomplishment when I go home with only the things I went to the store for.
yes - agreed! Great advice :)
if anyone wants to borrow my three children to take shopping with you...i promise you'll never want to go again. ;) just kidding. kinda. they sure cured my shopping habit.
haha, I don't like taking my 1 child, I can't imagine 3!! ;-)
Messy Minimalist my toddler is the reason my mother can no longer "shop til u drop" like your mom.
Stephanie Caldwell totally agree, i no longer wanna shop with 3 of my kidoes
It's been a slow and steady journey toward a sleek and chic state of minimalism and I'm not done yet. It is a non-shopping work in progress!
I love your channel! I also am a very messy person trying to take on a more "minimalistic" life. Not the extreme that other people take it to but like you said, having less. It makes me feel better knowing there's more of us! Keep on cleaning!
Thank you! Yes - there are more of us out here! You're not alone ;-)
I AM in control of what I DO!!!"
----------------------------------
We do things we want to do & then rationalize a good reason.
Then comes the problem of online shopping.....haha but I get what you're saying, just stop!
hah! Oh I know. I started down that rabbit hole, but my video was getting too long. ;-)
Mad Blender guilty that's my problem I am a big time online shopper 😆😩
Working on this addiction. Especially Ebay.
Same! I can stop myself in store, but online just aghhh
I feel like it's the same as store shopping: just don't go to the websites.
:) It's such a simple, but awesome realization. Good luck! (and thanks for watching!)
:) GOOD LUCK! You can do this!! Seriously, the less you go, the less you'll think about it. :)
Nuns are minimalists, too. I am fascinated at their ability to do "without".
Good tip on leaving the money in car
Loved your rant! I agree - cold turkey is the way to go!
Thank you!
When I feel like shopping, I either watch youtube, organize/clean, or read books/listen to audiobooks from the library! All free!
shopping feels like a trick. the pricey are not really on "sale" they pump popcorn and cookie smells in the room to make us want to stay and buy more.
I tell myself I am allowed to like everything I see in a store, but that does not mean I have to clutter up my home with it.
Thank you rachelle
Last year i watched your videos including this one and with decluttering my home removing 60 big bags out of the house
Rarely go shopping the feeling of organized home is so great and if i think of buying any thing is of true need and has a place for it or replacing old thing
Or else if does not have a home or where to put it? I then donot go shopping i have more relaxing time coming from home and relaxing
best regards and wish you all the best
Funny, I was just talking about this. I've decided every time I think of shopping I'm going to do some type of workout. Whether it be just a long walk outside, 30 minutes at the gym or a 20 minute HIIT at home. The positive side of this is that I like to shop A LOT so I should look pretty good come summer. FINGERS CROSSED! ;-) If the urge to shop still arises, I'll watch a few videos on healthy meals and then go shopping at the supermarket...not Target!
haha - sounds like a good plan!! :) Good luck!
Just found this channel yesterday and I love your videos! I love how hard you are working to try and declutter your house!
Thank you! :)
Ah, and I never played everquest but my hubby did!
Also making a list helps a lot.
yeah, making a list helps me a LOT! Though I forget it in the car half the time... doh ;-)
Messy Minimalist you can always make a list in the Tools part in your cell phone..😁
Yes, just stop. If target is a problem, stop going to Target. Buy food somewhere else.
exactly. :)
Well IF you are addicted to shopping you find somewhere else to shop haha
Madeleine Pousar Just go to a grocery store. One that only has food and health items.
Thanks for stopping by. Sounds like you and I are on similar stages. Good luck with your journey and blog, and thanks for subbing!
Great advice. This totally works. I did this a few years back when I was trying to get out of debt. I just didn't go to certain stores. I stopped going to Target and got groceries elsewhere. I limited days I would go shopping.
All your videos are fun. Keep them coming.
iv been stuck at home with morning sickness so have saved so much money by just not going shopping. Will try and keep it up when I'm feeling better.
it's good to find out I'm not the only one that had the shop til you drop mentality. My mom and I have had nights like that. Your actually doing the 2 things I have set out to do this year. Go from messy to tidy and to stop shopping. I'm going to try your suggestions thank you
Good luck :)
Thanks ;-) And good luck becoming more minimal!
I found that only carrying cash and having an allowance helps immensely, I used to balk at the idea but my bank account thanks me =)
Oh, yeah cash is a great idea. My husband also swears by this method!
Great advice. I thought I was the only one that knew this advice.
Downside: that means bras and underwear were on my amazon wish list for 2 weeks after I cleaned my closet (those bras were so worn out they weren't gonna spark joy for *anyone*) but hopefully anyone who checked my wishlist knows me well enough to know what I was doing. lol. It took a while for me to adjust to not shopping every few days but in the end it works!
lol, great comment. Good idea too!
If you end up falling off the wagon by buying things you don't need, make sure that you return them a.s.a.p. You will feel happy and releived when you do this.
Agreed! Good advice
My issue is online shopping, clothes from thredup, amazon crap that I dont need but want, yup im screwed!
haha, yeah I'm not sure I have the advice to help on that one...good luck!! ;-)
Create a budget on how much you are willing to spend. It may not stop it completely but it will limit it.
So very true... Same with eating, etc.
Keep up the good work.
thank you, sounds like you've made some great progress yourself! Nice job :)
It's so true. I don't really buy stuff except for food. I had to buy some new bed sheets 2 days ago with a $9 coupon and 30% off and I was like "this is weird, I haven't shopped in a long time". Just don't go to the stores. Stay away and use your time decluttering :)
Just doing the 30 days to simplify 💪 good to see I'm not the only one struggling sometimes 🤗
hehe, nope you are NOT the only one. :-D good luck!!
It also helps to not go down those aisles when you're hungry... that always ends poorly for me! ;-) Glad to hear you're enjoying life post-MMO! :)
I have the Target Dollar Spot problem. I've even driven to stores in a different town to purchase certain items I've seen in Haul videos! Yikes! I decided I REALLY need to stay out of Target. So I'm thinking about just doing a subscription for the things I regularly purchase there.
Yes - I do subscriptions through amazon for certain key items and it's helped me to not go in so much!!
me and you have the same mind set. I did the exact same thing. just quit cold turkey. it definitely was hard. but now I just enjoy not shopping. it gives me so much more free time
Nice work :)
Great advice delivered in a great way :) I'm in the midst of my own declutter and habit change project.
Good luck to you!
That is the best advise- STOP! loving it❤️❤️❤️ i mean no excuses. so true!
Rachel great words of wisdom :).
I don't like shopping so I don't really understand.
I enjoy you and videos; always great content, keep doing what you're doing you rock my friend :)!
Have a blessed day.
Haha I love your channel.
I'm on a self imposed "30 days no spending challenge". Apart from food and my work Train ticket that's it. On week 2 so far!
I'm watching your video while playing World of Warcraft and raise your 23 days played with my 133 days ;) Greetings from Azeroth!
haha!! LOVE this comment. :-D It's like getting a post card from my old hometown. Have fun!
For The Horde :)
Haha! I love you even more, because I'm right there with you on WoW. I cut it out, too, but it really was fun for a hot minute
something that helps me so much is imagining how the item was made (usually in China or Bangladesh in horrible conditions) .
Thank you! I'm glad you're enjoying my videos. And good work on simplifying your closet! That's a gutsy way to do it! :)
Delete your Amazon and eBay app from your phone.
