Yes. I think the difference between Ferry and say, Dylan ( who Ferry describes as his idol) and say Leonard Cohen, is that Ferry very much wrote as a man of his specific time; he recognized and wrote in the current popular culture. As such, his songs are powerful and poetic documents of his time, while it could be said the Dylan and Cohen wrote for all time.
Ferry has more in common with another great poet, Joni Mitchell. This all said, I include Ferry in my top 5 pop song writers and hey, that voice!

I bought this album in 2018 at a Value store after noticing how intriguing the cover was. Read a little bit of the info on the back and saw it was made in 82. I figured I'll just put myself in the context of that year and see how it goes. Heard the first track and immediately recognized it so I was pleasantly surprised, but what happens when you continue listening to the entire album is hard to describe. It is spiritual and timeless, you are left feeling a thousand years wiser. It truly is, as they say, a masterpiece.

A great tribute to an incredible album & band. Roxy in all their incarnations/periods were artists in the true sense of the word. They were expressing ideas, trying new things, not sticking to the accepted ways of doing things and the results were amazing. Really brilliant musicians. The engineering also stands out for the quality that complimented the music.
I saw Ferry in I think 87 in Germany. Absolutely loved it. When they did Avalon and Yanick Étienne sang her part she just kind of slipped onto the stage from behind the curtain. You could hear her before you could see her. Absolutely incredible voice. Crystal clear and powerful. Really made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Sadly she died March this year aged 64.
Thanks for this video Warren, Roxy are a real fave of mine for many years!
P.S. That part of the UK, the north east, has produced some incredible artists. Here's a short list:
Bryan Ferry, Sting, Mark Knopfler, Brian Johnson, David Coverdale, Eric Burdon, Paul Rodgers, Chris Rea and Trevor Horn. All within a radius of 100 miles or so!

Obviously it was recorded hi speed without Dolby, and Clearmountain did not want to hide that analogue hiss....And then the percussion and drum presence showed why. Avalon became the new calibration "meter" for the big studio monitors in many studios I bet. And Neil Jason on bass... what a underrated monster.

This reminds me I haven't watched "9/12 weeks" in a long time ("Slave to Love" is part of soundtrack). Also fun fact: the piano song at the end, an original composition, wasn't included in the official OST album. Even these days people are looking for it and can only be found as mixed parts from the scene when it's played.

Great video and timeline! A friend turned me on to Roxy's first album and I've been a fan ever since. I was fortunate to see them in Cleveland when they toured in support of the Country Life album. They opened with Prairie Rose, and as the intro built up, Bryan Ferry calmly sauntered out stage right in a sequined evening jacket, as if he knew the exact number of steps required to get to center stage without hurrying. At the crescendo of "Texas" he was spot on at the mic with "Oh, that's where I belong it seems to me...". Great show, the band was tight, and every time I hear Prairie Rose now I re-see that cool, silky smooth entrance.

I bought Roxy Music's first album when it came out and to this day it's one of my fave albums and to my ears the best, freshest and most original debut album ever. To me they weren't quite the same after Eno left and Roxy version 2 didn't really connect with me, the songwriting didn't engage me in the same way - but Avalon caught my ear with its astonishing production and sound. A huge influence on the music of the '80s. This was around the time when I started noticing the name Bob Clearmountain on all the best-sounding records coming out . . . great video, thanks Warren!

The refined, studied sound of this album, that influenced so many of the new wave bands of my childhood, is being sung by a guy that's right at the same point in his life as I am now. It resonates more than ever, right now.

Wow, so glad that the algorithm put this video in front of me today. Great retrospective of Roxy Music, thank you. I was at art school in late 70s/early 80s, and was really into Roxy Music, Brian Eno, Kraftwerk. It was a period of experimentation and breaking boundaries. I studied Sound, part of the Sculpture department.
Now that the kids have grown up and moved out I can set up my home studio and get back to producing some new work.
This video has inspired me to revisit some of my old favourite artists. Thank you 🙏👍🤩🦘
