Agreed. I'm no expert but the music really grabbed me back in the day. Thanks for covering it PoR, that review makes me feel good about my taste in music. I'm sorta baffled that Rick Beato hasn't done an episode. Just proves the point of how underrated they are. Love the mention of the greats joining in on Avalon. Brian's a cool cat for sure.
I was lucky enough to see him on his most recent tour in 2019, where he played all of Avalon. Not in the typical corny front-to-back way that other artist do, but interspersed among his solo stuff and older, deep cut Roxy tunes. He was truly amazing.
@@PresidentGas1 Right on (I love shows at Greek Theater)... I was almost there (long story) I caught the '99 Oakland show (won tickets off the radio!) at the Paramount Theatre. The lighting of that swanky place was incredible and the crowd frantic during the second half full of deep-cut Roxy songs.... "In Every Home a Heartache" just wow Greetings from Kobe, Japan.
Slave to Love Kiss and Tell Windswept Avalon More than This. Bryan Ferry is simply the best. Watched him perform at the Royal Albert Hall in London a few years ago and he was exceptional.
I was into New Wave and Punk, but I think Bryan Ferry was overlooked because the general population in America didn’t like either. More Than This blew my mind. It still does. It’s so ethereal.
"More than this" was my first dance song at my wedding! Still a classic timeless song. The Avalon album will always be a #1 in my heart still to this day, so many great songs!

A beautiful tribute to Bryan Ferry & Roxy Music. More Than This will always hold a special place in my heart, it stopped me from committing suicide at the age of 14. Granted it was the 10,000 Maniacs cover that saved me, but the lyrics were just so poetic, that it made me realized that I still had a lot more to live for and there is more songs for me to discover and explore. I finally heard the Roxy Music version a couple of years later while playing bass at a recording session for this man and wife group, and they gave me their cassette copy of the Street Life compilation. I've since bought all of Bryan's and Roxy's albums on vinyl and cd, and he truly influenced me a lot in my songwriting and compositions.

Thanks for sharing. Well-stated. He's a great vocalist. Suave, too. I learned about Roxy Music in high school during the '80s wave of the British Invasion. It wasn't until a decade or two after undergrad school, however, when I got to regularly listen to "Avalon," "Love Is the Drug" and "Virginia Plain," that I became a bona fide fan. I met Bryan Ferry in 2011 in Birmingham UK, when he did an album signing session. He was charming, impossibly suave and a true gent. Usually famous people look like the rest of us in real life, Ferry had an aura about him. He carefully signed the Olympia album (a terrific LP by the way) and held it open for a moment to let the ink dry, gently slide it back into the slip case and shook my hand. Great experience.

all of Roxy Music albums are epics and his solo albums are amazing too my top 5. Ferry solo are 1. Love Me Madly Again - a thrilling ride between hard raunchy rock and the finest orchestral textures 2. Another Place, Another Time - also a thrilling ride that reaches something very ethereal 3. This Is Tomorrow (calling) - a hard rocker 4. Sign of the Times - another rocker 5. Don't Stop The Dance - haunting song that still gives me chills. Other than that his covers albums are just beyond amazing. Best Roxy Music songs is hard but 1 per album is the only way I can narrow it down. 1. Ladytron 2. In Every Dream Home A Heartache 3. Mother of Pearl 4. Bitter-Sweet 5. She Sells 6. Manifesto 7. Same Old Scene 8. The Main Thing

First time hearing Roxy Music on November 8, 1975, I have been a fan since. I was fortunate to hear & see Roxy Music, Sept.19, 2022 in Chicago, for their 50 year☆☆☆☆☆ celebration, since they were not stopping in St. Louis, MO. Still Great sounds & lyrics.♡♡♡♡♡
I'm definitely a fan of Bryan Ferry and Bryan Ferry-adjacent artists! Another one to share with my mom, who rediscovered her love for Roxy Music a few years ago. Thanks, Professor!
Great video Professor! I've always been a big fan of Roxy Music! "More than this" has always been one of my favorite songs! Brian Eno is a musical genius also, I love all his projects, Brian Ferry has a awesome voice. I was listening to Roxy music last night! What a surprise to see this video today! Great episode! Thanks for sharing Professor!
Outstanding video once again. Bryan Ferry is absolutely awesome! I wish to add three honorable mentions: 1. Don't Stop the Dance from Boys and Girls; 2. Kiss and Tell from the excellent album Bete Noir; 3. Is Your Love Strong Enough from the movie Legend soundtrack with guitar from the great David Gilmour.
Thanks for this ❤️ would not have pegged you as such a great Ferry/Roxy fan -- if you haven't seen it the DVD recorded show at Hammersmith Odeon is outstanding (& you are so right about More Than This -- it's sort of in a class by itself -- when it first came out I thought it must be what the angels sounded like :)
Siren is Roxy Music's masterpiece and one of the greatest albums of all time. Stranded and Country Life are not far behind. My 5 pack The Thrill of It All, A Song for Europe, Editions of You, All I Want Is You and Love Is the Drug.
OK P-Rock, that was great! You just don't see Roxy Music getting the acclaim they deserve! I remember the first time I heard the Flesh and Blood Album (one of my 10 island records) I was absolutly blown away by how different it was. I am a music fan on a huge scale and have love Classic Rock to Punk to Classical and Country. I was a Disco fan when I was young, yet at the same time you had Queen releasing Bohemian Rhapsody. I loved it al, but.................... Flesh and Blood was a game changer. The mood they could set, and Brians impecable vocals. I always considered him one of my three holy trinity of vocalist. Brian Ferry, Morrsey and Terry Hall of the Specials. The first album review I ever did for my High School news paper was the Avalon album. Keep up the good work! Really like your stuff. I like the way you dig deeper than just the hits!
His unmistakable passion and tantalizing vocals draw you in and won't let go....it's addicting. Love them all, but " Love is the Drug" knocks it right out of the park!! Thank you so much Professor!!!
You just inspired me to go looking for "In every dream home a heartache" and Ferry's version of "Jealous Guy", I don't think I have heard either of them in 30 or 40 years.
"In Every Dream Home" on first listen was initially funny, but got creepier and creepier with each verse. It depicts a man who, because of his attachment to wealth and materialism, becomes so emotionally void that he falls in love with a blow up doll. Brilliant.
Roxy Music have been a favourite band of mine since the late 70's. Their music is incredible but also the production. If you listen to their music on headphones you hear so much going on. They always put so much into the production. Not surprising when you have Eno involved I guess. Also Ferry's solo stuff was incredible, Taxi and Bête Noire in particular were fantastic albums and I still listen to those now. Whatever Ferry has done he has always associated himself with top-notch musicians and producers. I remember seeing them at a gig and one thing I'll always remember, the track Avalon and Yanick Étienne's incredible vocal. Never heard a better female voice! Thanks for this episode, Professor.....Roxy Music truly are one of the great bands!
Kudos, Kudos and MORE Kudos to you sir, for the long, overdue recognition of the extraordinary Bryan Ferry! Like you, I don't quite understand why this Genius has been overlooked! But, once again, thanks to you for the recognition to this artist and all of your work and contributions to Rock and Roll
Roxy Music in the 70's was the blueprint for most of the music of the 80's. It is an absolute crime that they were not big in the US. But those that knew, knew how important and good they were. I'm a little surprised you didn't mention anything off For Your Pleasure...
I saw Roxy Music during the Avalon tour at the Radio City Music Hall on a rainy night in NYC. I'm so happy to be able to say that. Oh, Modern English delivered an amazing opening set that was largely missed by most. Their loss.
Top fav Bryan ferry and roxy tracks In Every Dream Home a Heartache If there is something She sells The right stuff Kiss and tell Day for night Stone Women Slave to love My only love Sensation Out of the blue The thrill of it all Avalon To turn you on Both ends burning Virginia plain A song for Europe Strictly confidential Mother of pearl
I’ve been a fan of Roxy Music since first seeing them at the Hollywood Palladium in December 1972 during their first U.S. tour. I was an instant fan, as they looked like a rock band that could’ve been in the tv cartoon, “The Jetson,” totally space age. I’m much more of a fan of early Roxy than anything after “Country Life,” or his solo albums, which were kind of a novelty back then. “Ladytron” set the tone that they were different, from the very beginning. “Strictly Confidential” from “For Your Pleasure,” he confesses “Before I die, I write this letter, here are the secrets you must know… truth is the seed we try to sew…” one of his greatest songs. Seek it out. On “Stranded,” Serenade” and “Amazon” are treats. “Country Life” is my favorite Roxy album, and the song “Casanova” that may be one the most unique structures that I’ve ever heard. The song will sound like no song that you’ve ever heard.
The song "If There Is Something" Has become my all time Roxy favorite. It wasn't until I watched the movie "Flashbacks of a Fool", that I heard the song for the first time. I had liked Brian Ferry over the years, mostly for his later music such from his Avalon years but I was never crazy for him. Then I saw the movie, "Flashbacks of a Fool". I began researching his earlier stuff. I was blown away with some of the earlier Roxy Music music. Here in the USA; we never got to hear any of the early stuff; at least I hadn't. If There Is Something, Out of the Blue and Mother of Pearl are a few of my favorites now. I will say that some of their music will start out not particularly great and then there will be a switch into something marvelous and spell binding. The musicians that were with Brian Ferry over the years have always been phenominal and I really enjoy the long Riffs that are often played out within the songs..
great stuff mate. Big Ferry fan here, total staples in my music tracks. My kids can sing along. Some good covers of "More than this" are around as well. 10000 Maniacs did a ripper. Cheers for another top video. Slave to Love ... had a very cool 80s video clip :-)
I truly think what makes this song so special and transcends time is how eerily haunting and atmospheric it is. Truly masterful! On a sidenote the late great John Wetton of Asia same played with Roxy music during one or two of their tours of Europe in the mid 70s.
I saw him at the Greek theater a couple of years back. Not only was it one of the best sounding concerts I’ve ever been to, the combination of various colognes and perfumes, it was one of the best smelling audiences I’ve ever sat with. Amazing show.
He's like a James Bond of music. "Avalon" is a favorite and a few years ago I was watching that video over and over. Also like his version of "Jealous Guy."
My 5er: 5. Don't Stop The Dance 4. Avalon 3. Sensation 2. Angel Eyes 1. Kiss And Tell Honorable Mentions: Slave To Love More Than This The Chosen One Same Old Scene Crazy Love
I always think of that scene in “Lost in Translation” (great movie, by the way), where the two main characters go out for a fun karaoke night, and the dude sings “More Than This” in a slightly off key manner when I hear that song. I am only 24 (soon to be 25) years old, and I have been a lifelong fan of Bryan Ferry/Roxy Music for as long as I can remember.
In every dream home a heartache……a must to listen to from BF! And, Is your love strong enough. That song was used in the movie Legend from 1986. My sister has taken me to many of his concerts. He has a truly unique and beautiful voice!

Plenty of quality rock/glam-rock songs on early Roxy albums. I'd recommend their debut album and Stranded
not sure I would classify them as either, but I agree "More Than This" is timeless!

with Guitars
from David Gilmour
Has always been
a Favorite
of mine 🎼✨
all of Roxy Music albums are epics and his solo albums are amazing too my top 5.
You are a profound blessing. At a time when C(instant) N(egative) N(ews) might seem so important, you remind us of the beautiful art of the rock era. Thanks so much for redirecting our focus. In today’s world, your writing and teaching is so, so important. I am 65 years old and active in my patent law practice. Many inventors passionate about their inventions. I protect their work. You protect, preserve, and propel these rock masterpieces. I am so energized by your work. Please keep on rocking us!!!

You truly are keeping this music alive.
From a musician, a fan, and a veteran, thank you for your service.
Love is the Drug from the Gatsby soundtrack is great with the orchestra backing Bryan
Had to click on this one - love Bryan Ferry's music. "Avalon" is my all time favourite Roxy Music song.
That's the perfect title for Mr. Bryan Ferry!!!! I love his music and still listen to it this day!!!!! Very cool!!!!
I'm definitely a fan of Bryan Ferry and Bryan Ferry-adjacent artists! Another one to share with my mom, who rediscovered her love for Roxy Music a few years ago. Thanks, Professor!
You're welcome!
He's the thread that holds my life together. Perfectionist in every way. Words are insufficient.
So I saw Roxy Music on their reunion tour last year and was by far one of my most favorite concert.
I like the way you dig deeper than just the hits!
my favorite band/ Artist since late 70's Saddy only met a few who even ever heard of them. Thanks for giving them thier due!
Roxy Music & Bryan Ferry are superb, not too many complaints about that top 5. Personally, I'd throw in Dance Away though, love that song!
Avalon. Another record I listened to over and over and over again!
It's a pity that Pyjamarama wasn't included in For your pleasure album. A masterpiece of early Roxy, imho.
"In Every Dream Home" on first listen was initially funny, but got creepier and creepier with each verse. It depicts a man who, because of his attachment to wealth and materialism, becomes so emotionally void that he falls in love with a blow up doll. Brilliant.
You caught my eye with that ref to Jealous Guy.
The Professor of Rock, there is none higher
Sucker MC's should call him sire
Bryan is one suave F. Finally got to see him in 2018. Hot Damn!
I often feel you are describing my favorite music but able analyze and describe them way better than I ever could. Thank you so much my friend.
How could you not mention 'Bête Noire'?! That was an incredible, album. So dark, polished and sophisticated.
Agreed! Loved that album when it came out. Add ‘Down in Limbo’. That one was my favorite. Edit: Kiss and Tell was also great
@@suemommie You are so very right! Even my teenagers think it sounds cool (better) than most of the stuff their friends play.
I thought the same thing!!! I have bete noire on vinyl :)
'Beta Noir' sounds amazing this time of the year
My Five;
1. Oh Yeah!
2. This is Tomorrow
3. Avalon
4. Slave To Love
5. Virginia Plain
Avalon is absolutely one of my all time favorite songs of all time. Love Roxy, love Bryan’s solo works too.
Great video…….Avalon is one of the best albums ever recorded……thank you Professor
Their loss.
Top fav Bryan ferry and roxy tracks

Classic song .. So different from anything else at the time, and still sounds great !
Avalon was so great for a late period work...more than this is breathtaking
I love the whole "Siren" album...especially Love is the drug and Both ends burning. What about "Out of the blue"
One of the greatest albums of all-time ..... every song is epic.
Yes! Sentimental Fool is one of my favorites!
Siren is good, but Country Life is better imo. "Out of the Blue" is tremendous.
@@Ladybrite1 You're right- the songs kinda grow on you.
Best. Episode. Ever. ~Peace.
great stuff mate.
How utterly lovely episode. Thank you Prof x
My 5er:
5. Don't Stop The Dance
4. Avalon
3. Sensation
2. Angel Eyes
1. Kiss And Tell
Honorable Mentions:
Slave To Love
More Than This
The Chosen One
Same Old Scene
Crazy Love
Dude, what a great episode. Thank You!
If there is something! Masterpiece
Brilliant top 5! Over You is often overlooked as a classic tune. It swings and is also very melancholic and totally epic! 🤩
Huge fan of Roxy Music in the 80s. So fortunate to have seen Bryan Ferry on his last 2 tours 👏🏼 Would have to put his song “Windswept” in my top 5!
Well said. Windswept ridiculously underrated 👍
New Romantic hits the airwaves: Duran Duran, ABC, Spandau Ballet
...
Roxy Music Avalon: let us show you kids how it's done
Same Old Scene did it well!
You left out David Bowie, the Cars, Talking Heads who were just as influenced by Roxy.
Japan also, they evolved very similarly 👍
In every dream home a heartache……a must to listen to from BF! And, Is your love strong enough. That song was used in the movie Legend from 1986. My sister has taken me to many of his concerts. He has a truly unique and beautiful voice!
I was a bit deflated when I saw your mention of In Every Dream Home A Heartache.
