@@PresidentGas1 Right on (I love shows at Greek Theater)... I was almost there (long story) I caught the '99 Oakland show (won tickets off the radio!) at the Paramount Theatre. I met Bryan Ferry in 2011 in Birmingham UK, when he did an album signing session. He was charming, impossibly suave and a true gent. Usually famous people look like the rest of us in real life, Ferry had an aura about him. He carefully signed the Olympia album (a terrific LP by the way) and held it open for a moment to let the ink dry, gently slide it back into the slip case and shook my hand. Great experience.

Granted it was the 10,000 Maniacs cover that saved me, but the lyrics were just so poetic, that it made me realized that I still had a lot more to live for and there is more songs for me to discover and explore. I finally heard the Roxy Music version a couple of years later while playing bass at a recording session for this man and wife group, and they gave me their cassette copy of the Street Life compilation. I've since bought all of Bryan's and Roxy's albums on vinyl and cd, and he truly influenced me a lot in my songwriting and compositions.

The song "If There Is Something" Has become my all time Roxy favorite. It wasn't until I watched the movie "Flashbacks of a Fool", that I heard the song for the first time. I was introduced to Roxy Music by way of Garbage. Reading an interview with Duke Erikson, he stated that he and Butch Vig were such huge Roxy Music fans that Duke named his daughter Roxy.
The first Roxy Music album is the craziest (in an arty, good way). My favorite Roxy albums are Stranded and Country Life, and my favorite Roxy songs are "Mother of Pearl" and "Oh Yeah." However, I love all the other usual suspects (like "More Than This") too.
I think Roxy Music's cover of John Lennon's Jealous Guy is right up there with More Than This. For his solo work, Is Your Love Strong Enough. His vocals are so haunting.
Thanks for sharing. Well-stated. He's a great vocalist. Suave, too. I learned about Roxy Music in high school during the '80s wave of the British Invasion. Didn't hear much of the band or Bryan solo until I was in college. A gal I knew loved Roxy Music and Bryan Ferry. It wasn't until a decade or two after undergrad school, however, when I got to regularly listen to "Avalon," "Love Is the Drug" and "Virginia Plain," that I became a bona fide fan. Glad to know Bryan/Roxy are still fondly remembered. Shawn R., Mo-Mutt Music/Sacred & Secular
Roxy Music's finest moment is "For Your Pleasure". It is an absolute masterpiece. It is also Bryan's personal favourite Roxy recording. Rightly so, he couldn't put a foot wrong back in 1972/3. Apart from being the first rock vocalist to wear a tuxedo, along with Bowie, he was a massive inspiration to later generations of musicians.
Same old scene from flesh and blood. The film Times Square ran over the end credits I sat there on my own in the cinema through the whole credits of that film it rocked my world as youngster.
I'm so glad you did a video on Bryan Ferry. I think he and Roxy are so underrated. I've been collecting Roxy and his solo albums for years and he remains one of my favorite artists of all time.
First time hearing Roxy Music on November 8, 1975, I have been a fan since. I was fortunate to hear & see Roxy Music, Sept.19, 2022 in Chicago, for their 50 year☆☆☆☆☆ celebration, since they were not stopping in St. Louis, MO. Still Great sounds & lyrics.♡♡♡♡♡
Outstanding video once again. Bryan Ferry is absolutely awesome! I wish to add three honorable mentions: 1. Don't Stop the Dance from Boys and Girls; 2. Kiss and Tell from the excellent album Bete Noir; 3. Is Your Love Strong Enough from the movie Legend soundtrack with guitar from the great David Gilmour.
He's like a James Bond of music. "Avalon" is a favorite and a few years ago I was watching that video over and over. Also like his version of "Jealous Guy."
You just inspired me to go looking for "In every dream home a heartache" and Ferry's version of "Jealous Guy", I don't think I have heard either of them in 30 or 40 years.
"In Every Dream Home" on first listen was initially funny, but got creepier and creepier with each verse. It depicts a man who, because of his attachment to wealth and materialism, becomes so emotionally void that he falls in love with a blow up doll. Brilliant.
I bought the album Another Time Another Place in 1974, superb from start to finish. The In Crowd, Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, Help Me Make it Through the Night, just three of the great songs. The self written title track is wonderful too.
In every dream home a heartache……a must to listen to from BF! And, Is your love strong enough. That song was used in the movie Legend from 1986. My sister has taken me to many of his concerts. He has a truly unique and beautiful voice!
Yes, thats what I associate it with too. Great scene. 50 shades of hot before there was 50 Shades of awful Grey. That’s when Rourke was looking like Rourke.
Favorite concert ever: Roxy on the Avalon tour in '83. They opened with "The Main Thing". The curtain dropped at the perfect moment maybe 20 seconds in, crowd went nuts and I knew it was going to be amazing. Phenomenal album. Great choices for the 5 songs (thanks for including "Over You") and the honorable mention though I wouldn't have included Sensation, as good as it is. So many great songs to choose from going back to RM's debut. There was an attempt at a reunion album in the early 2000s that fell apart. His first two post Roxy solo albums are his best but there are some great moments on later records ("Goddess of Love", "I Thought" written with Brian Eno, and a cover of "Song to the Siren"). For people who love Avalon, the prior album "Flesh and Blood" (with "Over You") is worth checking out. You can see the band heading towards that lush Avalon sound.
"Tall, suave chevalier." I'm grinning like a bloody idiot at that, Adam. This was wonderful. Thank you. List is pretty flawless as well, ALTHOUGH (there's always an "although" from the armchair section) I'd swap out "Sensation" with "Is Your Love Strong Enough?" from the Legend soundtrack. It's Bryan Ferry with the same secret weapon: David Gilmour. Quoth the Bueller: Che bella.
I saw Roxy Music during the Avalon tour at the Radio City Music Hall on a rainy night in NYC. I'm so happy to be able to say that. Oh, Modern English delivered an amazing opening set that was largely missed by most. Their loss.
Slave to Love. My god, I'm still falling in love with, playing it, looking for DJs to do remixes of it. This song is a silk scarf and sips of a martini. I simply adore it.
I'm definitely a fan of Bryan Ferry and Bryan Ferry-adjacent artists! Another one to share with my mom, who rediscovered her love for Roxy Music a few years ago. Thanks, Professor!
Okay, _Avalon_ is one of my top ten desert island albums. It is absolutely flawless. My favorite track on that--by far--is "Take A Chance With Me," which is absolutely sublime. Ferry's solo album, _Boys and Girls_, sounds like an outtake from _Avalon_, that's how good it is. Plus, it has David Gilmour of Pink Floyd on guitar. "Stone Woman" is my favorite tune from that album.
Thanks for this ❤️ would not have pegged you as such a great Ferry/Roxy fan -- if you haven't seen it the DVD recorded show at Hammersmith Odeon is outstanding (& you are so right about More Than This -- it's sort of in a class by itself -- when it first came out I thought it must be what the angels sounded like :)
My favorite song by Bryan Ferry, I heard back in the 80's while watching a great 1986 film, "Legend," starring Tom Cruise when he was in his very early 20's (22 yo) and the beautiful actress of "Ferris Buehler's Day Off" fame, "Mia Sara, " "Is Your Love Strong Enough?" (Tangerine Dream Soundtrack {German Band}) The movie also featured Jon Anderson of "YES," backed by Tangerine Dream, singing "Loved By The Sun." A truly epic movie with not the greatest reviews, with great music, and two aspiring young actors.
I saw him at the Greek theater a couple of years back. Not only was it one of the best sounding concerts I’ve ever been to, the combination of various colognes and perfumes, it was one of the best smelling audiences I’ve ever sat with. Amazing show.
I first heard Bryan Ferry on Roxy Music's early albums and even though the songs were, for the most part, faster and louder, the passion in his voice was still so exciting and sexy.
You can't choose wrong with Roxy/Ferry but your choices are mostly culled from the smooth, lush, romantic pop period, leaving out the early brilliant art rock and barely touching on the mid-period proto-new wave. The Roxy/Ferry story can't be told without Remake/Remodel, Mother of Pearl, Do The Strand, Editions of You, Virginia Plain, Casanova, Street Life, Same Old Scene, and In Every Dream Home a Heartache. By itself, Ferry's voice is a grand instrument but mixed with Eno's out-there treatments, Manzanera's art-flamenco leads, a world class rock rhythm section, singular style and album covers - Roxy might be modern music's greatest gift.
Agreed and well stated. For those that may turned off by the later smother and "pop" sounding Roxy Music, I would encourage you to listen to the first 4 albums. They are much more experimental with a harder rocking sound. As great as the Avalon album is, I find myself listening to one of these earlier albums more frequently.
His unmistakable passion and tantalizing vocals draw you in and won't let go....it's addicting. Love them all, but " Love is the Drug" knocks it right out of the park!! Thank you so much Professor!!!
I truly think what makes this song so special and transcends time is how eerily haunting and atmospheric it is. Truly masterful! On a sidenote the late great John Wetton of Asia same played with Roxy music during one or two of their tours of Europe in the mid 70s.
I have every Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music albums that exist. From the first album to the last they are so amazing that I don't know why other people can't see that.
Thanks for the post! Bryan Ferry is so very cool classy elegant and a superb song lyricist! I attended msg nyc sept 12 2022 and Roxy music and of course Bryan Ferry were wonderful! Such an enjoyable concert!
Let's face it.. that time period was the greatest in regards to music.. great story telling.. unique rhythms. . I forgot about this song.. I just listened to it again and it's still great.. brought back some memories..
Honestly; from Flesh and Blood, Avalon then his solo work Boys and Girls , Bete Noire to Mamouma is a jaw dropping (and panty dropping) slate of work. Just epic
The best Roxy Music albums (IMO) are STRANDED (1973), COUNTRY LIFE (1974) and SIREN (1975), aka the Eddie Jobson years. Top 5 songs: 'Just Like You', 'Mother of Pearl', 'Bitter-Sweet', 'A Really Good Time', 'Just Another High'. The best Bryan Ferry solo album (IMO) is IN YOUR MIND (1977) with the song 'Love Me Madly Again' being my favorite.
More than this... Seems to be written by the heavens and given to Bryan Ferry to bring it to life? I mean, all the harmony just falls into place and not to mention the best solo. This one is meant to touch the soul.❤
Roxy Music in the 70's was the blueprint for most of the music of the 80's. It is an absolute crime that they were not big in the US. But those that knew, knew how important and good they were. I'm a little surprised you didn't mention anything off For Your Pleasure...

in 1972/3. Apart from being the first rock vocalist to wear a tuxedo, along with Bowie, he was a massive inspiration to later generations of musicians.
Best birthday gift I had was seeing him at the Moody Theater several years ago.
Same old scene from flesh and blood. The film Times Square ran over the end credits I sat there on my own in the cinema through the whole credits of that film it rocked my world as youngster.
Slave to Love - first song that we danced to at our wedding.
I'm so glad you did a video on Bryan Ferry. I think he and Roxy are so underrated. I've been collecting Roxy and his solo albums for years and he remains one of my favorite artists of all time.
Ditto
That's the perfect title for Mr. Bryan Ferry!!!! I love his music and still listen to it this day!!!!! Very cool!!!!
He's the thread that holds my life together. Perfectionist in every way. Words are insufficient.
Can't say enough good things about this guy. Cool, suave, elegant and music to match. Nice one
Some great choices, but "Is Your Love Strong Enough?" Should have been included. It's heart breaking.
One of my favorites of the era. I even like the video (from the movie ‘Legend’).
This is also one of my favorites. His teaming with Tangerine Dream was a perfect match.
I echo your entry of "Is Your Love Strong Enough," and add "Don't Stop the Dance," and "Kiss and Tell."
@@gryffydd42 I don't think Tangerine Dream had anything to do with "Is Your Love Strong Enough." They did the rest of the soundtrack, though.
Wish I'd scrolled down. Agree 100%.
He's like a James Bond of music. "Avalon" is a favorite and a few years ago I was watching that video over and over. Also like his version of "Jealous Guy."
"Take a chance with me ", so sweet
Great song.
Take a chance
You just inspired me to go looking for "In every dream home a heartache" and Ferry's version of "Jealous Guy", I don't think I have heard either of them in 30 or 40 years.
It's a pity that Pyjamarama wasn't included in For your pleasure album. A masterpiece of early Roxy, imho.
"In Every Dream Home" on first listen was initially funny, but got creepier and creepier with each verse. It depicts a man who, because of his attachment to wealth and materialism, becomes so emotionally void that he falls in love with a blow up doll. Brilliant.
You caught my eye with that ref to Jealous Guy.
More Than This... Such a classic that fits well in any of the last four decades
I bought the album Another Time Another Place in 1974, superb from start to finish. The In Crowd, Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, Help Me Make it Through the Night, just three of the great songs. The self written title track is wonderful too.
I'm a long-time Roxy Music fan. Love Ferry's voice, and his songs. Thanks for doing this!
In every dream home a heartache……a must to listen to from BF! And, Is your love strong enough. That song was used in the movie Legend from 1986. My sister has taken me to many of his concerts. He has a truly unique and beautiful voice!
I was a bit deflated when I saw your mention of In Every Dream Home A Heartache.
So I saw Roxy Music on their reunion tour last year and was by far one of my most favorite concert.
I will always associate Slave to Love on the 9-1/2 Weeks Soundtrack. There's also a reggae cover on the 50 First Dates Soundtrack.
For sure.
Had to click on this one - love Bryan Ferry's music. "Avalon" is my all time favourite Roxy Music song.
I'm definitely a fan of Bryan Ferry and Bryan Ferry-adjacent artists! Another one to share with my mom, who rediscovered her love for Roxy Music a few years ago. Thanks, Professor!
You're welcome!
Avalon is absolutely one of my all time favorite songs of all time. Love Roxy, love Bryan’s solo works too.
My favorite song by Bryan Ferry, I heard back in the 80's while watching a great 1986 film, "Legend," starring Tom Cruise when he was in his very early 20's (22 yo) and the beautiful actress of "Ferris Buehler's Day Off" fame, "Mia Sara, " "Is Your Love Strong Enough?" (Tangerine Dream Soundtrack {German Band})
The movie also featured Jon Anderson of "YES," backed by Tangerine Dream, singing "Loved By The Sun."
A truly epic movie with not the greatest reviews, with great music, and two aspiring young actors.
I found Roxy Music and "Love is the Drug" after seeing Dave Gahan sing it while back stage on the DM 101 movie.
Everybody was influenced by him.
That sounds cool. I'll have to look for that
I saw him at the Greek theater a couple of years back. Not only was it one of the best sounding concerts I’ve ever been to, the combination of various colognes and perfumes, it was one of the best smelling audiences I’ve ever sat with. Amazing show.
You truly are keeping this music alive.
From a musician, a fan, and a veteran, thank you for your service.
Huge fan of Roxy Music in the 80s. So fortunate to have seen Bryan Ferry on his last 2 tours 👏🏼 Would have to put his song “Windswept” in my top 5!
Well said. Windswept ridiculously underrated 👍
mother of pearl blows all of those songs away
Let's vote here for "Don't Stop the Dance" as an honorable mention!
I like that one better than Slave to Love
I first heard Bryan Ferry on Roxy Music's early albums and even though the songs were, for the most part, faster and louder, the passion in his voice was still so exciting and sexy.
Totally agree... but for me “Slave To Love” hits me for 6 every time
You can't choose wrong with Roxy/Ferry but your choices are mostly culled from the smooth, lush, romantic pop period, leaving out the early brilliant art rock and barely touching on the mid-period proto-new wave.
I had never heard of Bryan Ferry before I had heard his song:
“Kiss and Tell”
I have never heard a more sophisticated dance track since!
I have every Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music albums that exist. From the first album to the last they are so amazing that I don't know why other people can't see that.
More than this. Whew. That’s a quite a song. Is Your Love Strong Enough is also beautiful.
Thanks for the post! Bryan Ferry is so very cool classy elegant and a superb song lyricist! I attended msg nyc sept 12 2022 and Roxy music and of course Bryan Ferry were wonderful! Such an enjoyable concert!
Thanks for the post! Bryan Ferry is such a cool classy elegant singer! I attended msg nyc sept 12 2022 and the entire concert was wonderful!
The man is pure class and elegance of Rock n Roll
You can say that again!
Just epic
Mamouna is very underrated
The best Roxy Music albums (IMO) are STRANDED (1973), COUNTRY LIFE (1974) and SIREN (1975), aka the Eddie Jobson years.
Top 5 songs: 'Just Like You', 'Mother of Pearl', 'Bitter-Sweet', 'A Really Good Time', 'Just Another High'.
The best Bryan Ferry solo album (IMO) is IN YOUR MIND (1977) with the song 'Love Me Madly Again' being my favorite.
My 5'er's
Oh Yeah. Reminds me of a holiday romance in Cornwall.
Avalon
Slave To Love
Dance Away
More Than This
my favorite band/ Artist since late 70's Saddy only met a few who even ever heard of them. Thanks for giving them thier due!
More than this... Seems to be written by the heavens and given to Bryan Ferry to bring it to life? I mean, all the harmony just falls into place and not to mention the best solo. This one is meant to touch the soul.❤
Loved the music of Spandau Ballet and the Captain of her heart by Double.
That echoing sax in SB's Gold and Ferry's Don't stop the dance is great
Great video…….Avalon is one of the best albums ever recorded……thank you Professor
Roxy Music in the 70's was the blueprint for most of the music of the 80's. It is an absolute crime that they were not big in the US. But those that knew, knew how important and good they were. I'm a little surprised you didn't mention anything off For Your Pleasure...
"More than this", "The space between" and "Avalon"... The entire Avalon album is just perfect!
