I tried not to laugh, he won't be doing that again. Doctor, well done for not saying some expletives when you got a shock, I know that would be much first reaction, unless you have a "Directors cut" that isn't suitable for your channel🤔🙄
The fuse blew after your son pulled the choke out. On the fire wall just alongside the fuse holder is a switch on the choke cable, this is part of the cold start warning lamp circuit. The wiring on that switch is not original, is it possible the previous owner has reused that switch as a clever anti theft system? Try pulling the choke out about 1/4" making the switch close and see if the fuel pump starts. It's also interesting that the original dynamo regulator is installed but the engine is fitted with an alternator now. I work at a military museum here in Australia, we have a number of Land Rovers (or Land Fill as the manager calls them) the electrics are by far the most troublesome area, usually due to decades of handy man fixes, additions, bodges, or just plain old age.
As I commented recently if you are going to try working on a LR youself you need a few tools . Have you a multi meter ?? Ideal for checking to see if you have voltage where you need it . As you have pulled the spark plugs out , take a lead off cylinder no 1 . Put an old spark plug into the lead . holding in insulated pliers earthe the plug to the engine and get someone to crank the engine . you should have a big fat spark . If not it is the distributor / coil side . ALt try some easy start in the carb if it starts could be fuel .
Hi There. I have been caught out once or twice (way back when) getting a shock. Wakes you up 😁. The coil boosts up ignition voltage from 12volts to a Volt /Amp, number you would not believe. Looking at the old plugs, they appear to be very "sooty" which is a sign of getting too much fuel delivered (rich). They should be light, (ish) brown. I have the same plug spanner in my shed. Aged 20 years+. As modern vehicles have smaller spark plugs. The spanner works a treat, unless someone has used a socked set adapter to tighten the plugs you want to extract. 👍👍
My money is on fuel pump. They have a definite tick of the points in them when they’re operating (they tick faster when they’re starting to suck air on an empty tank). Easy to swap out, easy to test and a common thing to fail (Morris minors used the same pump and caused me issues too) Remove the outlet hose and feed it into a container (fuel can) and flick the ignition on. Will diagnose it immediately and only requires removal of 1 hose clamp at the filter.
Looks fab! Great video as well. I’m a newbie too being a teenager but mine seemingly had some fuel issues when stationary but a full tank sorted it and no trouble since 🤷🏽♂️
You can see from your video that the ammeter is not moving when you Crank it at all, So the coil switching on and off makes the meter move a bit. It's normal to put a test lamp on the low side of the coil, and Crank it over to see if it blinks. If always off, Check for power...if always on, clean the distributor points.
Hi, It seems the electric fuel pump blew a fuse??? before finally giving in??? The electric pump is repairable and has contacts inside the cover??? With the ignition on, tap the pump with a piece of wood to see if you can strike life into it - a bit like slapping the top of a black and white telly to get it working (ask any oldie) lol - welcome to the world of land rovers!
You should not get a shock off the HT leads. It would be a good idea to replace them, a set is not very expensive. The starting issue sounds like the fuel pump. I’m sure you can get the original repaired.
I had this with my old series 1, it was the fuel pump sticking, sometimes, it would be cured by tapping it, but eventually it stuck permanently, ended up replacing the fuel pump with a brand new one, it was fine after that .
1117***** then, the year before mine. Steel grill panel, longer water hose on the inlet manifold and all that :o) Looks waaaay less corroded than mine as well ^-^
I wish I thought of the idea to make a channel to help me rebuild my series 😆. So much information in these comments, I would've been done in half the time. My guess would be the fuel pump. As far as aesthetics go, I'd say do what YOU like. More Dr Garage, less UA-cam comments.
I guess that fuse power the coil? Doesn that have mechanical pump? No problem air in the line, its petrol car. Remove that pump and put 12V , you can probably hear the noise or completely seized ...
I think the Series one has an electric fuel pump, it sounds like you are not getting fuel to the engine so the fuel pump would be where I would look, you could always try spraying something into the top of the carb like brake cleaner and if it runs for a few second you know that everything else is working and your problem is with fuel
Pull the filter line off the filter and put it in a bottle. Give it a crank. If it flows, its not the pump. If it doesn't or trickles then its the pump.
@@thedoctorsgarage quickest way to tell is remove each plug lead and check that it sparks on the block. (You’ll need a helper to crank). I personally think that it might be the wires nest where your fuse is. Most likely corroded / old wiring. Hope you find the issue and great channel. 👍🏻
I'm no mechanic so apologies if this suggestion is wide of the mark but could you not disconnect the fuel line at the in line filter then turn it over. I presume if the pump is working it will be obvious ie it will be pumping fuel out of the fuel line. Clearly you will need to have plastic bottle (or similar) handy to collect the fuel in as it comes out of the fuel line.
Well it's a Land Rover! I don't care if it is over 70 years old everyone in the universe tells me they are unreliable so it must be true ;-) But I have a 1928 Ford in the shed and it doesn't go either. That's the problem with these new-fangled motorised horseless carriages.
I wonder about the health of the battery. The starter didn’t sound real strong. If the battery is getting low maybe it doesn’t have enough juice to give the fuel pump what it needs. That would be easy enough to check and eliminate as a possible issue. Good luck!
Get a modern electric fuel pump fitted, they're only cheap. Replace the fuel filter and only run it on super unleaded that E10 stuff is rubbish and bad for older cars.
No need to replace it, first of all check the points under the black cover. Easy to replace or there's a solid state version available from Burlen. Rebuild kits also available. I have an 86" registration VYA, I wonder if they came from the same dealer.
“I didn’t know I’d get shocked by that”
Highlight of the video 🤣
Amazing as always!
I tried not to laugh, he won't be doing that again.

Nice bit of kit to tinker away with. Thank you for the Doc.

Cool!!! My father owned for many years HUE222 1948 Series One.

The two holes in the dash are for positive and negative terminals for an aux power point .
Nice thanks!
Interestingly early series front grills were very popular in Australia as they were used in the bush for BBQs !
😂👌🏻

Land Rover looks fantastic, can arrange a replacement fuel pump if required and a starter handle 👌🏼
Thanks Martin can you send me a message about this - I’m interested - best is on Instagram @the_doctors_garage

Join the series one club they will very helpful to you when you have problems

Interesting - I will get some new leads!

Cheers Martin- I think mine may be the culprit
Disconnect the fuel pipe just before the inline filter and place it in a bottle and turn ignition on and if fuel doesnt come out you know its that
Does seem to come out when the banjo nut is loosened..
The radiator panel should be body colour. I'd guess it's a replacement which looks to have been left in primer?

Thanks Captain Zissou! I agree- UA-cam can be so helpful for me to get things sorted!

Have you tried tapping the fuel pump with the handle of the screwdriver or small hammer ?
I have! Learnt that trick from my defender!
Fuel pick up pipe may be blocked or be perforated drawing in air. Fuel line blocked. Stale fuel. Get fuel sorted before you progress further
Cheers Andy will check those things out
Thought?? Fuel pump burning out causing the fuse to blow. Probably due to rusty fuel tank with the the pump dragging the crap through??
Don’t give up. Hiccups are bound to be there. It’s an old car after all

I think the pump is ok - runs when out but it’s an SU pump and I’m not sure if it’s functioning as well
As it should
Sounds like a fuel pump, get it out, put 12v across it and see if it spins it does sound like a fueling issue
I’ve had it out and seems to work for now…
It would appear to be the fuel pump. Can you try applying power to it directly, or perhaps tapping it with a hammer while running the pump?
Pull the filter line off the filter and put it in a bottle. Give it a crank. If it flows, its not the pump. If it doesn't or trickles then its the pump.
It does seem to come out quite well but quite intermittent - now I’m also not sure if it’s the spark plugs - got a guy coming to look at it next week

Yeah sounds like the fuel pump isn't getting power. You should hear it ticking. Broken wire?
If you can’t hear the fuel pump ticking, you’ll need to clean the points under its cover
Spot on.

The fuel gauge does show empty ?!!
Could it be the starter motor? 🛻

You can see from the plastic fuel filter that the car has an electric fuel pump Easy to put in a new modern 12v fuel pump
Your from Which country sir???
Uk
Thank uu..!! Iam from india..

Cheers Davo- So the pump I have is a diaphragm type pump- think it's called a SU pump- can I juts directly swap this for an electric pump?

Seems fair to me to have your 3-year old repair it then 🤷🏻♂️
Get a cheap repaint in original colour. Sand coloured soft top. set of wolf wheels in body colour. new seats.Would look great.
