So excited about cutting season, stocking up a new log shed I built this summer, re-hafted granddads old axe, new flue installed… jeepers Buckin thanks for sharing and inspiring.
As a Kiwi from Aotearoa New Zealand, it fills me with happiness to see a Tuatahi axe being used in Canada. Respect to Buckin' AND the team at Tuatahi in the Wairarapa, Aotearoa, New Zealand. Ngā mihi ki a koutou katoa o ngā hau e wha!
I didn't wear my chaps yesterday and took a chainsaw to the kneecap at the end of the day, luckily the chain was only spinning on its momentum, I'd let go of the trigger but let it drop too quick after the cut, and I instantly felt a cold feeling in my knee. Thankfully it split only the skin (to the bone), its momentum stopping against the kneecap (I hadn't sharpened it since the morning, too). It barely bled before I could stitch it up myself. It's the best lesson I could have had in safety, because an inch or two to the side and I would be in hospital right now still.
Nice trick of shortening up the pants with an axe. My uncle once found a nice pair of insulated coveralls and gave them to me because they were so long. I'm 6'4", and he's about 5'9" on a good day. He told me that when he found them, he thought about cutting them to his size with an axe, but then decided to see if they fit me--I'm super glad that he handed them off to me, lol!

Pretty close to 30 years ago a friend and I were cutting firewood. He ran the saw into the toe of his boot. He was lucky it only skinned all the leather off the toe. The steel toe saved his foot. I got thinking about what it would do to a leg… then ordered a set of chaps. Over the years I’ve had a lotta people give me crap about always wearing those chaps. Two years ago I screwed up big time and ran my saw across my leg. The only damage was to my wallet because I went right out and bought a new pair of chaps. Won’t cut wood without them! And ….. stay alert!
He Buckin: I enjoy your videos so much and learn a lot of tips from you! Now after having to retiring because of old injuries. I have a lot of tips for you to know and wish that I could share them with the new guys / gals, like you are doing !!! Keep up your great videos
That hemming method really made me laugh , my old dad use to shorten his logging pants that same way. Never cut my leg , but l cut my boot ,always wear my rubber powersaw boots, always . 👍🇨🇦
Hey Buckin, just curious do you ever use a tach to tune your saws or do you just tune them by ear? Also, do you have any recommendations on what to look for or stay away from when buying safety pants?
I used to cut mine off to my boot while wearing them tops til an Amish woman said they weren't even lengths. So now she cuts them 3cm above my boot tops & puts in a hem.
Not sure about melting the ends together. My understanding was the threads need to be able to move freely. Would be interesting to see what the factory end in the off cut looks like.
Had a big willow roll back off the stump pushed my saw back into my Chaps, stopped the saw but still 12 stiches on the edge where chaps weren’t , just imagine if there was no chaps would of went directly into my thigh…… even professional racecar drivers crash from time to time…. Leg protection is no joke. Life or death.
@@pacificcoastpiper3949 why would it? It's just really strong strands of nylon. In the UK they are marketed as "tough cut scissors" because they are designed to cut through tough materials 🤷♂️

Well, you better not use that axe with those pants, you might chop your leg off! Honestly, for protection gear I didn't think it would cut so easily ... I guess it catches the chain up with the fibre direction or something. Please, someone with knowledge correct me on this I'm just yakin'. I also didn't think Kevlar could be heated and mended like one would do with para-cord or a climbing rope (with the cut ends). Maybe it's a super thin layer of the stuff ... again, correct me if I'm wrong.
The pants work exactly the way you think they do. It's not that the Kevlar and the other fabrics stop the chain from cutting. All that stringy fabric gets wrapped around the clutch and stops the saw dead in its tracks.
Oh, I forgot to add that most chainsaw pants and chaps are not rated for corded or battery chainsaws. Something to do with the torque of the motor.?🤷♂️

Instead of a lighter to melt the Kevlar use a butane torch.
It has a smaller, yet finer flame, and it is a bit bi hotter.
You know, billy ray, they actually make special Kevlar shears
Standard medical shears from the first aid kit will do. I have previously tested them on an old pair of chainsaw trousers.
