ABSOLUTELY !!!! If I make a mistake on pricing I take the hit , never double back on the money . Give the customer quality time , hang out , get know each other ... I work 100% by word of mouth .
You couldn't be any righter Buckin been doing it for 26years and have never advertised word of mouth only have plenty of work kindness and positivity go leaps and bounds!!👍👍👍👍👍 Peace to day Buckin Army!#AXE OF KINDNESS
Buckin, that is the exact advise that most folks in business for themselves need to hear. I ran my boat repair business for 11 years with zero advertisement cost. All word of mouth from one boat owner to the next. Show up when you say you will, be up front about the cost and treat their property like it was your own. You will never lack work once that kind of reputation is established. Great video my friend, well done!!!
SNOWMAN66 sorry I don't get in the comments more often. I will try to more frequently. I subscribed right around the 4,000 subscriber mark. Hope everyone is doing well.
I work full time for the railroad but my side work is lawn care and tree trimming and removal. All the business that I do is from word of mouth. Other customers telling other people. I have to say I am always busy from it! I don’t have the nicest truck and my lawn tractor is from the 80s but I maintain everything and take pride in my work! Your advice Buckin is spot on!
Buckin, great advice for folks building a business, I’ve had a landscaping and lawn service for 13 years and I have had made many friends working for them. I have always found the above and beyond my bids to do for them and every time it was so appreciated. And friends it doesn’t matter if it’s a $100 job or $500,000 and I’ve done them both and all in between. Show them you appreciate them and the opportunity to serve them. Great video buddy! Love you all!
That's good advice. Remember never go back on your word even if you break even or lose a little learn from it . If the customer tells 20 people they were happy with your work they will tell 40 if they weren't happy.
Yuppers! Treating your customers fair will make positive impressions on people you've never even met. I was doing small engine work a few years back and an old boy brought me a snowblower in the middle of the summer. Said "it runs fine but don't shut it off or it won't start till tomorrow" 🙄. With a smile I said "ya I'll take a look at it". -come to find out his brother told him about me over a cup of coffee that morning and he couldn't wait to meet me. (I knew his brother for years) In small business - once word hits the coffee shop it'll either make ya or break ya! Your choice, so do work you can stand proud of. Thanks for the talk Buckin'!
I couldn't agree more with everything you said buckin. I've run my business the same way you run yours for 11 years now, and this year I am yanking all of my advertising because I just don't have any time for everyone that isn't a referral :-) as contractors, we are our customers champions. As long as we act like it, we will never need work. Not after a few years anyway :-) great video brother. I think you just helped a lot of young guys out
That was AWESOME.... I trim trees for free, some times more then I like its a massive oak or maple with a house or garage lean. I started in 2008 mowing lawns for the elderly in my town, it started as 3 lawns. I'm up to 14 lawns and the local funeral home. To put a perspective on it, I was hatched in April of 73 and retired in 2008 from building race cars and engines. I have never been so happy in my life as I am now just helping out where and when needed. A cup of coffee and a smile is all I need to keep me going. Thanks for the videos and the story's in them. BACON.
duce wags that’s very kind of you helping the elderly people in your community. I would be skeptical of the funeral home though. Those places run such a racket... they surely have money to pay a landscaper (or you)!
Mickey Colgan. Oh they pay, that's for sure. The funeral home has problems keeping a "handyman" around that is on call for snow removal in the winter and general property maintenance during the summer. Kids now days don't want to work for $20 an hour, I guess the internet and gaming has broken more then we have known now days. I guess the thought of 2 feet of snow at a time on call frightens people away from work, or just the thought of manual labor.
Buckin I’ve been in telecom from every perspective and very successful for 25 years. From install, day 2 support, sales, and sales support. You hit the nail on the head. If you put the customer first if sincerely care about them. Winning is a given. Presentation is everything
Need to show this video to contractors and workers around this part of Wisconsin. Never in my life have I had such a hard time to even get people to show up ! Contacted 5 tree people last year to trim around power lines. One took a look but never came back with a quote, others never even stopped by. Ended up buying equipment and doing it myself. Got tired of constantly contacting them over and over. Neighbors have the same issues. Blows my mind. Not just tree work, but yard rolling, asphalt, plumbers and electrical... blows my mind. Anyways... great vid, I like your advice vids !! Cant all be axes and cuttin! Love your attitude and knowledge bud
You are 100% right buckin I've been in business for 9 years now and I have come across this so many time. If you are kind and polite you will 90% of the time get the job. One again buckin great advice.
Excellent advice as usual, I can't believe there was a thumbs down on this... LOL... I would only add: There is always someone looking for a reason, so don't give them one if you can help it... Also remember, besides the word of mouth, that you have an audience looking on. Especially in this line of work. I used get most of my follow-up business from neighborhood on-lookers. It was always a boost when they would wait patiently for me, to get out of a tree, just to ask me if I had time to come give them an estimate on theirs.... I would frequently give my guys your same good advice. And then prove it, with weeks of more work, with the same Neighbors.
Bucking you couldn’t be more right on the money!!!! Love the attitude!! I am a truck driver delivering freight. My customers love me because of being happy when I show up and taking care of them . Other drivers show grumpy and don’t have a personality. !! You have to show them they are a person nor just a dollar
Buckin this video is 100% correct! Great video, great business practice, very helpful to the army! I’m extremely greatful you made this. Keep up the great work and thanks for your efforts making all your videos. Be kind friends!
I’ve been saying this for years Make the homeowners love you before they meet you That first phone call is your shot!!!! I tell my son 100 times a day it’s about becoming a household name you have to make The homeowner and every homeowner remember you were there God bless you my brother
Im so genuinely happy to be part of this channel, this mindset, this workethic, this vision on life and behaviour is the best guide i could've asked for. Thank you for this inspiring and beautiful content friend!
Yes, Buckin', Yes. I needed to hear this. Subconsciously i already did, but this was the icing on the cake that "owed" the party. The only thing i think i would have put a bit more emphasis on, which you had touched is; quality of your work. Be up front with what you can and cannot accomplish comfortably. There's nothing wrong with recognizing those things and being up front and honest. As a business owner of a residential tree company that's been rapidly growing, this is fantastic advice an makes me giddy to tackle the estimates i have lined up for Monday! Thanks Buckin'!
Hi Buckin', You hit the nail right on the head with this video! Just what I always tried to do back in the day ! I would like to have all my students and trainees see this video as part of their professional development before they enter the world of work. Thanks for your enthusiasm and positivity!
Great advice Billy and you are so right it's all about the experience. If to people are equally qualified it all boils down to which one you like. Have a great day brother and keep spreading the love.
Hard work = success, honesty = success, word of mouth is spread more today because of the internet it reaches out to millions of people. Godbless buckin
Good honest work ethics you will never go hungry. You are so right. I make so many new friends just by talking with people. The thing today is a lot of people think there better than everybody else. Repeat customers that are happy with your service in the past gains you more future customers.
Very true... honesty, sincerity, positivity and a love for the work you do will, in most cases, get you the job... of course the right qualifications and price will help, but in my experience people are willing to pay a little more if the guy or lady who's gonna do the job are kind and sincere and goes that extra mile for their customer…
Awesome video Buckin I swear I just heard my grandfather speak again don’t mean to go deep but that’s what he imbedded in us we’ve been farming and cutting fire wood since 1954 when the grandfather came here from Germany and still operating today thanks again love the axes and shine on pal
Welcome all new subscribers. Absolutely! You have to sell your self as the fight person to do the job doing it in good taste. Going the extra mile on a job will get your name out there very quickly. Everything you said is correct and will have you more recommendations for jobs than you can keep up with because you did the job right and conducted yourself in a professional manner. My oldest daughter had a company come in to do some tree work and they were a disappointment. They were everything you were saying not to be. Needless to say they won't be called for the next job. Hope the young guys listen to your wisdom and start out right to become the success they want to be. Thanks for sharing your experience and words of caution for them in starting out. Hope you have an awesome weekend!
Very good Billy. Sound advice, not only for business, but for life. My Dad taught this to me from the time I was able to remember anything. This is his short version.......Boy, it only takes a little bit of effort on your part to out shine the other guy. I can remember as a boy being tired of hearing that. But as time went on I finally realized what a simple truth that was and have used it in business and my personal life ever since, and I'm 74. Have passed it on to my kids and now my grand-kids. Thanks for the video. Just subbed.
Hey billy Luke here I'm 33 have had my new tree service for 2 years and been climbing almost 8 years. Just wanted to say you are so very right about everything you said. I like to cover my customers in kindness and always do a little extra for them on the job.
JESUS BUCKIN!!!!! That speach is makin me wanna go door to door!!!!! Thank you for the guidence!!!! I have a ladder,16" powersaw, hand saw, double bit and a splitter. Tryin to get a job at a local tree service but would love to do small jobs on the side.....extra couple hundred bucks would be a huge help!!! Ive got all the P.P.E. I need(which you never wear!) and some novice know-how so I gotta start small. Thanks again for exsisting---BDG
Nice video Buckin'. I tell my employees "People first, project second, profit last". If we take care of people and take care of our work we'll all make money. I'm 49 the one thing I've learned from being self employed that I'd like to share with the young fellas is it's extremely important to remain hungry and motivated when business is going great. It's easy to skate when it's going great. Don't fall for it. I really enjoy the videos. Thanks for sharing. Be safe.
Great advice Buckin'! And one thing is for sure. There is ABSOLUTELY NO BETTER ADVERTISING, than word of mouth. It beats telephone books, t.v. commercials, billboard, etc. It just can't be beat. And what you are telling folks is no better way than to get word of mouth advertising. Many years ago I worked for an uncle of mine who had a carpet laying business. He Never Ever advertised in any way. We could have worked 7 days a week, his business was that good. And the reason he did so well was because he had the same set of skills that you are talking about. Good job. Jim
Buckin' this is absolutely one of the best bits of advice for anyone in the service industry. Your mentorship of everyone who watches your channel and those who then pay it forward, either by action or by explaining. Thank you so much buckin'. Love you brother.
You are exactly right, Billy Ray. Young people, who want to get started in a business, should watch this video. I wish more people had your work ethic.
This is so so true Iwas in food for over 25 years I then retierd and started cutting grass just to keep doing something I always cleared up after me I always spent time even if i had no time talking to the customer I always did what I said I would do when I said I would do it but the most imortant thing i do /did is SMILE My grass cutting days got out of hand due to the demand and now I have to pass work to others but thats also good they are young and want work I also made sure my price was right never ever price a job by what you think they can afford big house does not mean big price The price should always always be fair and honest if you follow these rules you will do well at whatever you do and Billy is 110% right in what he says so listen to him on this one !!!! even if you get it wrong stand by your word because your word will follow you through life end of lecture but just thought it worth saying
Rules I learned from my Father in law: keep the trucks clean. clean up at the end of the day, heck even during the day if you need to. pick up your tools, keep them in good order. Don't just think of this job, think of them as a repeat customer.
Yes they are. Clean trucks, first thing we look for in someone coming to our house. We were looking for a new plumber; going to work one morning (early) was behind someone at a light. Nice clean truck for first thing in the morning. Wrote down the name and number and website. We've been using them for about 7 yrs now.
Interesting wonderful logo on your shirt, Billy Ray. Typically, I avoid adverts on my shirts. This message, Kindness, makes me smile. Honestly, I'll start this day with a better attitude with some increased warmth for my neighbors. I'm smiling just thinking.
Good stuff buckin! I always try to "provide more service than I get paid for" treating customers how you want to be treated it's that simple!! Spread KINDNESS friends!
You really get it man! Be on time, be honest, be confident, be polite, set correct expectations, take pride in what you do, do the work the best you can, get paid repeatedly by the customer and their friends and family. Thank you for remembering those to me! For me me it is most important that I can trust you. If you manage that I will return to you exclusively and recommend you with confidence.
Thanks Billy! This is exactly what I needed to hear! Helped me refocus on why I opened my small engine shop in the first place! No more “number” for me! Much appreciated.
Love this video, not too many people take pride in their work. Nice to see an owner take pride in their work. In the end it is your name that will continue on long after your gone.
Hey Buckin. This is what it’s all about my friend. I’ve been in small business all my life and I don’t think anyone could spell this out any better than you just did.. really enjoy your videos. Started following you because dad was a logger when I was born. Dozers, skidders and chain saws excite me still today, and the old McCulloch saws still make the blood pump. Bust on my friend!
Good stuff... Being 20 plus years self employed my favorite experiences are when the customers want to feed the whole crew! They so appreciate what we are doing they want a sit down meal to personal get to know everybody and say thank you. The only downfall is the spreads these farm wives put out completely knock the crew out especially after pie at the end! 😀
you have literally helped me in jus about every aspect of my life, I can honestly admit as a business owner that I learned something today. Man of Service.
You have to go above & beyond ! To a point ! I always did what I said I would do ! Always be on time , never miss an appointment ! You can't be an old Crab ! If you don't like people ,get a job somewhere ! What do you think Billy ?
WE HAVE ALL REAPED THE BENEFITS OF OUR ACTIONS THUS FAR AND WILL CONTINUE TO DO SO AS LONG AS THERE IS NATURAL LAWS OF THE UNIVERSE,, SUCH AS ACTION AND RE-ACTION KARMA IF YOU WILL
Lorenzo:: Hey buddy, welcome to the Buckin' Army! Glad you finally decided to take the plunge! What on earth took you so long? (just picking on ya) As you already know, there's plenty of this good stuff to go around. Hi from The South of Michigan! Be Blessed!
Lorenzo Palazzi welcome to the channel! I don't comment much, but had to pop in, and say I love Italy! Enjoyed visiting your country a few times, when I was in the Navy 👍
Gosh, I just love this guy more and more! I tell the new people at work the exact same thing when they ask. Thank you for putting it so well. Welcome new folks, subscribe to the fun! Spread love and kindness and a helping hand.
Thank you Billy, I am planning on saving money over the summer to eventually start my own firewood business in the fall and this gave me a ton of insight on the business side of things. Thank you
Hey Buckin. I've been logging for about 6 months now. My boss is almost 60, been totin' a saw since his teens. We just started a small walnut/maple job on this older couple's farm today. On the way home from work, my boss said he logged on their property 30 years ago. He's logged the man's parents' farm as well, and some of their other relatives. They called him. Everything you said in this video rings true in this situation; my boss went the extra mile in his younger years so he can still have work now, and lord willing I'll learn from him.
Great advice and timely, too. Many youngsters and business start-ups are unsure how to get from here to there. Raised on pop-culture and instant gratification, too many don’t understand the concept of real work and the hard sacrifices inherent in success. You hit the nail on the head throughout the video. Should be required watching in a business class.
Just saw this video for the first time, very true. I do some tree work and logging on the side and this how I run my show and my customers are almost always happy. Seen it done the othet way and it don't work. Love the channel keep it up Buckin
Buckin', thanks for this video and all your inspiration/instruction. You and August Hunicke. I remember the first time I saw you top a tree two years ago. I had already been gifted my great uncles buckingham spurs, harness, and a few ropes, but had never really used them. I then went out with that equipment and a hand saw and took down my in-law's 15' tall dead pine. Now 2019 has been the first year of me running my tree business (which is a blast, might I add), and it's words of wisdom like in this video that I aspire to build my business with. Things that should be obvious, and things that I saw my dad do really well running his business. I suppose I needed it given as instruction as well as example. Thanks again, and keep up the good work. God bless. Be kind.
This is the way I try to base my firewood business, and I have gotten many orders because of it. I could spend days with you buckin! Keep up the great work buddy!
Awesome video Buckin , been doing trees for a year an ahalf an working on releiveing my boss of most of his stresses on the ground or in the air , as well as with the person were doing some work for , kindness goes further than ego, .... cant wait to hear some more bearxlaw stories an keep the videos coming, you an august are damn near all I watch on UA-cam besides fishing or hunting .
I can't agree more with you Buckin'. Little things go a long way! Being honest, friendly, and fair is huge in relationship building. The "Never Pay More Than" strategy is clutch. I like that. You're so on-point with coffee lady example. When you own a business, you're "on stage" 24-7. It's clear that you were in sales prior to this, and you took the best attributes of a honest salesperson with you. None of what you laid down was rocket science but you're right that so many people do not do these things when building relationships. The points on referral business is SO true as well. Excellent points brother.
Billy , I just want you to know how much you have inspired me and my business as a landscaper , I do some very light tree work and pruning as well. I love you're Chanel and everything you do you're Awesome friend !!!!!👍🏼 Thank you so much !!!!!! 🙂
More business should have this plan. Good for you Buckin........ Cheers D

You can learn a lot from a mans handshake! I could t agree more about being good enough!! Love to you and the family buckin❤️
See you soon!!! How was your Birthday buddy!?!?
When the phone goes in front of a client answer it and say "can I call you back shortly, just having a meeting with a client"

Good honest work ethics you will never go hungry. You are so right. I make so many new friends just by talking with people. The thing today is a lot of people think there better than everybody else. Repeat customers that are happy with your service in the past gains you more future customers.

You are a good man Billy!

That is the kind of advice that if put to work makes your business thrive and makes the people around you happy. ❤
JESUS BUCKIN!!!!! That speach is makin me wanna go door to door!!!!! Thank you for the guidence!!!! I have a ladder,16" powersaw, hand saw, double bit and a splitter.
This is so so true Iwas in food for over 25 years I then retierd and started cutting grass just to keep doing something I always cleared up after me I always spent time even if i had no time
talking to the customer I always did what I said I would do when I said I would do it but the most imortant thing i do /did is SMILE My grass cutting days got out of hand due to the demand
and now I have to pass work to others but thats also good they are young and want work I also made sure my price was right never ever price a job by what you think they can afford
big house does not mean big price The price should always always be fair and honest if you follow these rules you will do well at whatever you do and Billy is 110% right in what he says
so listen to him on this one !!!! even if you get it wrong stand by your word because your word will follow you through life end of lecture but just thought it worth saying
This is the BEST business advice ever. I am a firm believer in the "Golden Rule"!!
Something I learned 40 yrs ago, always successful. Well said BR, hopefully the kids are listenin.
Rules I learned from my Father in law: keep the trucks clean. clean up at the end of the day, heck even during the day if you need to. pick up your tools, keep them in good order. Don't just think of this job, think of them as a repeat customer.
Michael Remski excellent rules 👍
Yes they are. Clean trucks, first thing we look for in someone coming to our house. We were looking for a new plumber; going to work one morning (early) was behind someone at a light. Nice clean truck for first thing in the morning. Wrote down the name and number and website. We've been using them for about 7 yrs now.
Yup, if they care for their equipment, they care for their work is how I look at it.

GREAT advice for the youngsters just starting out. Your work reflects WHO YOU ARE. Be honest, polite, friendly and you will do well.
Interesting wonderful logo on your shirt, Billy Ray. Typically, I avoid adverts on my shirts. This message, Kindness, makes me smile. Honestly, I'll start this day with a better attitude with some increased warmth for my neighbors. I'm smiling just thinking.
Great advice. Leave them smiling. The small extra things make a big impact on people.

Dude is so down to earth and in check. Nothing but respect for you bro!!
Have a good weekend bud

Love this video, not too many people take pride in their work. Nice to see an owner take pride in their work. In the end it is your name that will continue on long after your gone.
Hey Buckin. This is what it’s all about my friend. I’ve been in small business all my life and I don’t think anyone could spell this out any better than you just did.. really enjoy your videos. Started following you because dad was a logger when I was born. Dozers, skidders and chain saws excite me still today, and the old McCulloch saws still make the blood pump. Bust on my friend!
Well said buckin!

I want to experience the "Buckin Billy Ray experience" in the most platonic way possible. Love your channel brother. You are a very wise human being.
Oh...and treat em fair a few times and they won't even bother calling anybody else!

I use the saying when folk meet me, " Once met, never forget", this is so you in a positive way . So spot on mate in what you've saying.
God bless. Be kind.
Pure Awesomeness!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Much Love and Aloha! Great Wisdom Here Love ya Billy and crew aloha td
COMMON SENSE TO SOME AND ILLUSIVE TO OTHERS FRIEND THX
Billy , I just want you to know how much you have inspired me and my business as a landscaper , I do some very light tree work and pruning as well. I love you're Chanel and everything you do you're Awesome friend !!!!!👍🏼 Thank you so much !!!!!! 🙂
Really good advice Billy Ray! Sort of thing I tell my guys!
Be Kind and suck up your mistakes!!
Great video! Don’t usually watch long ones but I figured this might be worth it and it was. Keep up the good works!
