    Just a couple of pointers to add to a very good cleaning video. I always put a smear of gun grease to the hinge pins and where the fore-end pivots on the action. Also i use snap caps to relieve the tension on the firing pins before storing the gun.

    Prefer to spray cleaner down and use bronze brush then patches or kitchen roll to clean inside and then use mop to lightly oil barrels and just clean inside of action area with a brush or Cotton buds and then lightly wipe over with oily rag and apply grease to pivot areas , clean chokes and ejectors separately whilst doing barrels

    Thank you very much. I inherited my Dads shotguns and didn’t watch him clean shotguns as much as I should of. I know he is very happy they are clean the way he would have wanted them.

    Suggest you put that mop one more time trough the barrel after screwing the chokes back in. With a little to much grease/oil between the chokes and the barrel wall you get a little oil ring were the load passes from the barrel to the choke. This little oil ring can obstruct the load and damage the gun.

    Great video thank you - you raised some points I never thought of e.g. relieving pressure on the top spring (@ 1:55 ). On my Bettinsoli Evo you do this by pressing down on a short rounded lever on the bottom left hand side of the action.
    Incidentally phosphor bronze brushes, mops etc clean up well by shaking them gently in a jam jar 1/2 full of Shellite (a.k.a. Recosol R55, or naptha) also used as lighter fluid etc. Just squeeze out the fluid from the mop before storing.

    I use kitchen roll and never use a mop the reason is once you have used it its contaminated with crime .best to use more roll ! and I always grease the bearing surfaces very important this is , and oil ejector rails .(every time you shoot)

    Thank you for the video, I like the idea of covering the mop with patches and this is easier to push through than using a metal jag. Will try the bronze brush as well. I sometimes use an oily patch for the initial clean and this removes a lot of carbon.

    I use a bore snake with a patch soaked in Hoppes powder solvent on the head of the snake. You have to punch a hole in the center of the patch then thread the snake lead through the patch. Then you can thread the snake lead into the bore.

    This is the most basic of cleaning... much more should be done from time to time.

    Hiya mac I use the phosphor bronze brush 1st to get most of the rubbish out of the barrels then I sprite with Napier Gun cleaner then use the jag then I Walmart is a bit of oil To coat the barrels this is the right way

  • @Fendermanpaul
    @Fendermanpaul 5 років тому

    Scrunched up newspaper half a broadsheet size, pushed through the barrels first. Cleans most of the powder residue out. Spray your chosen gun cleaner in the barrels. Phosphor bronze brush each barrel. Then the Jag and cloth. Then the wool, with a good gun oil or spray on it. Check each bore. NEVER out the wool through straight after the brush you will RUIN it.
    The rest is mostly okay.

    Nice job but what about oiling and greesing the moving part, IE Forend to reciever joint, a touch of oil on the threads of th chokes ect, ect

    • @TSCTheshootingchannel
      @TSCTheshootingchannel  7 років тому

      Hi Mac, for regular cleaning, a wipe with the oily rag is sufficient, although a spot of oil or grease won't do any harm so long as you don't overdo it. Occasional cleaning and lubrication of moving parts such as ejectors etc is good practice - perhaps a subject for a future video.

    • @punchyscyllarus565
      @punchyscyllarus565 Рік тому

      its imperative to have metal to metal parts well oiled; a wipe with a rag is hardly sufficient

  • @markelliot1248
    @markelliot1248 5 років тому +11

    Firstly a safety thing, removing the fore end should be the second thing you do. Secondly you should be putting a small amount of gun grease on those moving parts.

    Thank you for such a comprehensive video. I'd like to ask you, can we spray a barrel from outside with oil that we use for bore cleaning, for removing led? Will not it harm bluing of the shotgun? I use Ballistol for cleaning.

    snapcaps not needed because you took the pressure of the top spring?

    • @TSCTheshootingchannel
      @TSCTheshootingchannel  7 років тому +2

      Hi Matt, no, that's a different spring. The top lever spring pushes the top lever across and locks the action closed. Snapcaps relieve tension in the springs that drive the firing pins. There's some debate whether it's really necessary to use snapcaps in a modern gun that is used regularly. The spring steel is very good quality nowadays and lasts well even if stored under tension. Using snapcaps might extend the life of the springs a little, but they last for years anyway and are relatively inexpensive to replace - it's up to you.

    Sorry but that's not the way to clean a gun. Wire head head threw first with cleaning spray. Then cloth patches till most of the dirt is gone. Then mop head threw it. And then remove chokes ,clean lightly grease threads and put them back in. Who ever told or showed you how to clean a shotgun was wrong mate.
