Great job on this video. I was completely lost trying to interpret what you call chokes in the UK vs. here in the US. The notches were the key. So many videos about Clay shooting (Trap, Sporting Clays, and Skeet) on YT are made by folks outside the US, so the descriptions of the chokes were in different languages. Thanks again for this explaination! For anyone else struggling: 5 notches = Cylinder choke (targets under 25 yards) 4 notches = Improved Cylinder = Quarter (1/4) choke (targets ~ 30 yards) 3 notches = Modified = Half (1/2) choke (targets ~35 yards) 2 notches = Improved Modified? = 3 Quarter (3/4) choke (targets ~40 yards) 1 notch = Full choke (targets over 40 yards)
Good video. I tend to stick to 1/4, 1/4 for Sporting and Game. 1/2 and 3/4 for Trap and Skeet and Skeet for you guessed it Skeet? I do have a set of 3/8ths which I use on the harder layouts. But as you say technique is everything so I tend not to change chokes too often.
I tend to stick between Half and Full which I find is generally a good range for me. I've recently bought extended Mod and Improved Mod for my Silver Pigeon, and only plan to change them out on the rare occasions that I'm required to shoot steel. For clays I really rate this configuration.
Alex.Very interesting and informative, easy to understand to. Like you i shoot a Blaser F3 Custom exclusive scroll and always use 1/4 & 1/2 choke. Please keep the Videos coming.
Thank you! I do not hunt so my shot gun is for home defense. It always concerned me what choke can and cannot handle a slug round. Obviously, I need to stick to a cylinder choke. I did not know about the notches, so thank you again!
As an American, I run IC and IC in both barrels for sporting. I believe that this 1/4 and 1/4. If I don't break a target, I know that it's me not my chokes that is the cause. Thanks for the informative video.
IC and LM for the sporting clays course I shoot. SK and SK in the 5 stand I shoot. If I'm shooting my semi-auto I use LM on the course and SK in the 5 stand. That varies depending on the course. I occasionally shoot a course with much longer targets. Then I use M. I don't shoot clays with anything tighter than M (1/2).
Well done young man. Excellent presentation and easy to follow. You will do well and make a good instructor at some stage. Get David to take you on plenty of game shoots.😁 👌
Very simple explanation, targets easily out to 50yds, Skeet and IC using a lighter 1oz 1200FPS load will break targets and improve the average shooters score.
Great video, very helpful to novices new to the sport! I have a 28 Bore would you say chokes are similar considering the diameter of the barrel being much smaller? I understand you have to be far more accurate with a 28 bore just wondering how much of a part it has to play.
I want to be able to use my shotgun to shoot paper targets. Many places don't allow bird shot, and not only that, when my main defense round will be buck shot, shooting bird shot isn't going to really give me the same effect (due to spread). But using buck shot for target practice is expensive. Will a full choke allow me to shoot bird shot in groups that would be as tight as, say, buck shot flight control? Assuming a range of about 10-15 yards.
In the US anyway, skeet I is between cylinder and improved cylinder and skeet II, between improved cylinder and modified. Years ago skeet II was generally called light modified 👍🏼
Well done! However it’s not everything a guy needs to know about chokes. For instance, many people don’t understand that when buying multi chokes, that just because you have a Browning (just an example) doesn’t mean you can just buy a Browning multi choke and expect it to fit. A multi choke needs to match exactly the internal diameter of your barrel. Manufacturers make barrels to different internal diameters so they aren’t all going to be the same. Also you mentioned pattern spread but not pattern density which many dont understand. For instance a side on clay has less surface area then one showing belly and is not only a smaller target, it is harder to break. The harder to break can be solved by using a larger shot size but now your pattern density is even worse so you may want a slightly tighter pattern to increase the shot density. I’ve heard people say they plan on just using their skeet gun to shoot trap because the larger pattern will make the target much easier to hit. Problem is that they aren’t considering that patterns shot density nor how fast their skeet #9 shot loses momentum in order to break an edge on trap target. Anyway, just something you may want to address on another video perhaps. 👍🏼
Yeah this is correct, unfortunately not something we could easily demonstrate, however we encourage any other youtube channels that can to demonstrate for us 🙏🏼
I always believed, the tighter the pattern, the longer the column. But I had a level three instructor tell me it only affects the diameter of the pattern, and the shot stream is the same. Would love to have it proved.
Personally I think shot column length is way overhyped considering the shot is traveling 20 times the speed of the target. Which means on a right angle target for every two inches forward the target moves the shot string will travel 40 inches.
A very short answer to your question....
Yes Alex I want you to do more videos, in fact do them all!
Using the paper cones was brilliant.
Yes it was clever
It was revolutionaire

I love hearing about chokes....
I like 1/2 - 1/2 choke .
Small course's close I use 1/4 - 1/4 at the close stations. But 90% I like 1/2 chokes
I have always used 1/4 & 1/4 for all my game shooting.
A very good informative video - well done Alex.
Look forward to seeing you both participating in shoot off / comparison videos
Great presentation and informative.
Well done! Best explanation I've seen so far!

what a bloody lovely video
simplify at its best

My questions have been answered. Thank you from the USA.
Great vid, well done, keep these coming. Thanks!

Professional presentation, the new voice for TSC.

Time for David to hand the reins over to this young man for video presentations.......excellent and informative, well done!!
Wow, thanks!
I fully agree
Very concise. Well explained and informative. Presentation was good too. Congratulations.
Thank you 🙏🏼
I keep it simple and just use LM in both barrels all the time (sporting clays). If I miss, it's not because of the chokes.
Agree, they'll work for 90% of typical sporting clays, the rest is just technique
Yes 100%, technique first. Theres a reason that the top sporting shooters use 10-£20k guns but they definitely didn’t start on them!
Exactly!
Same here LM and focus on technique 👍
On a good day, chokes don’t matter. On a bad day, they don’t help!
4:15 very educational. Thank you.
Great job in Explaining what Chokes are able to do what?
Please Alex do more presentations. I use 1/2 and 1/2 and forget the rest
Same here
Well said young man, clear, concise, true .
Very fine video young man. The cone demonstration is an excellent pictorial for unexperienced shooters!
Very interesting and easy to understand .Thank you.

1/2 and 1/2 for game, 1/2 and 3/4 for high game birds, 1/4 and 1/2 for sporting clays does it for me .
Thank you for the explanation. Pretty new to shotgun sporting and I appreciate the video.

Content is great, nice change from gun reviews.
Besides the fixed choke barrels, they are all internal chokes, flush and extended. Nice video.
Great video so well presented.🎉
definitely more video please, it was very clear and informative
Thank you! Will do!
I'm with George on this one full and full unless it's steel shot then it's the tightest allowed .
Great video, lots of good info. ❤
1/2 & 1/2 for me. Very good review 👍
Good choice!
What do you think of 3/8 in both ?
Looking forward to seeing a review on Fossari.
Okay yeah well add it to the list

Well said 👍🏻
What identification markings are 1/4 and 1/2 chokes if not got notches as you show, ie lettering or stars
Please do present more videos
Good job👍
What about slugs and buckshot?
Which choke should i use?
I have to use one as my barrell is threaded.
M3000
Good job. Thank you ! Greetings from Germany 👋🏻
Thank you too!

I've been using 3/8 & 3/8 for the last 3 year's and it seems to work.
For slugs which choke should i using? 1/4 or cyl?
I never knew skeet chokes were between cylinder and quarter. Always assumed they were widest!
In the US anyway, skeet I is between cylinder and improved cylinder and skeet II, between improved cylinder and modified. Years ago skeet II was generally called light modified 👍🏼

I have the same in both barrels and I know that it’s not the equipment that is going wrong but when I do miss, it’s my fault
I use light mod x2 on my sporting gun.
In many European countries you have to shoot steel and this way you can’t use full choke for example
2 x 5/8 - if you cant hit a bird at 20yards it's not the chokes fault.
what about 3/8 5/8 7/8? no mention?
If there any vacancy, please. 🤔🤔
David your finished Alex please take over at least we can understand what your saying
What do different chokes do to the length of the shot column?
The tighter the choke the longer the shot column.
@@Jolly56Roger the Ballistic High Speed guys should demonstrate this.
Yeah this is correct, unfortunately not something we could easily demonstrate, however we encourage any other youtube channels that can to demonstrate for us 🙏🏼

1/4, 1/2, 3/4 etc. mean nothing to us in the USA. We need to know weather it is mod, imp, full, cylinder, improved cylinder , skeet, etc.
Ohhh, its chokes, all right.! 😸
Tube Grease.
Now try for a pattern shot at a plate,8 in.,just screwed yourself
Multi chokes are a joke ! You either hit it or you miss it ! It's a dumb way to approach a shooting problem.
To some extent yeah, but that being said, your 10x more likely to miss a 40 yard driven target with a cylinder choke 👍🏼
Likewise trying to shoot skeet or a 10 yard bouncing clay rabbit with a fixed choke trap gun is far from ideal. 👍🏼
