That brings back memories. I was the Nizpro customer who funded the development of that engine, and its sister engine went into my car. It had the write up in Zoom mag. That was the very early days of Barra development, from 2003, and it's probably a lot easier to generate HP these days. As for the gearbox, clutch, driveshafts & CV joints breaking there was a lot of cost for upgrading all these.

Simon Gratkowski it’s near impossible to import them outside of Australia/nz. Of course a 4litre is going to have a much better torque/power curve over the smaller displacement. Later factory barras make peak torque around 1700rpm and that’s with a gt3582. These can run over 1300rwhp on just forged rods and pistons, and valve springs. stock head, stock cams, stock intake manifold the lot. Also destroked versions are revving up to 14,000 rpm.

way... what makes you think its running too lean??
its running lean due to the red exhaust piping. if that piping is that hot imagine how hot your exhaust valve is. that red hot of an exhaust in a car would have the undercarriage on fire. exhaust gets hot, i know..real hot..but not that hot--that hot in the video IMO is the engine running lean--now lean makes more power, but shortens the engine/turbo life substantially.

Cummins ran a 2300 v12 diesel(1400hp) like this for something like 30 days around the clock...without water in the cooling system. Used ceramic components to withstand the heat. It was a test for the US Army.

In v6 yes, and straight six is more responsive because of less cams. There is pros and cons for everything, but from experience i am sticking to straight six. V engines is no fun unless you jump in to v8 and up:)

this is awesome, but looks so dangerous. is it as dangerous as it looks? I've seen this before, but when the engine is not under load the manifold cools down at least a lil. this beast was just glowing red hot!

I have a Commodore which I very much enjoy, but I have a lot of respect for these Ford 6's. If this video doesn't excite you, you must be dead inside. I was sad to see the foundry and engine plant close and have to accept there would be no more. And yet, these are still a cheap engine to buy 2nd hand. Too often, the good things are not appreciated for what they are until they are almost all gone.

+pancudowny America has been putting out some bad ass 6 bangers since '78. Regal(3.8L turbo), Syclone, Typhoon (both turbo 4.3L pushrod V6), Buick Grand National etc. People are already getting numbers over 700hp with the "Ecoboost" and the new Ford GT is rated at 600hp with a "Ecoboost" V6. Both the naturally aspirated pony versions of the Mustang and Camaro are V6, both rated over 305hp. That's pretty good seeing as how my old 5.3L V8 in my last gen truck only made 320hp. People are also cranking up some US based 4 bangers like the Cobalt SS and others. There is some cool as smaller motors made here, and probably a lot more to come.
C Genious I know... It's just I've got a 4-cyl S-truck (Non-Iron Duke) and most of the hot-parts I've seen are meant for it in the J-car app (Transverse-mount FWD), so they won't fit! And forget just bolting-in one of the hotter engines you'd find in FWD or the Solstice/Sky (Ecotec).Plus, what really bugs me is there are South-American variants of this truck... and it's SUV counterpart... that get variants of the Ecotec--some flex-fuel capable--and diesels engines that have seen modding to produce up to 350hp! And still get 25+mpg!!

pancudowny I hear ya man. GM Performance Parts just added a 2L 275hp turbocharged 4 cylinder ecotec dubbed the LTG to their line of available crate engines for projects. The only killer is the price, 9,000 USD. You can get a 5.3L LC9 brand new for 5,000 USD making 320hp.

Not that presenting it fitted into a "Deuce" Nova hurt it, considering that a 153ci I-4 was the base engine in the Nova well through the early-'70s. ("Super-Thrifty" package: Inexpensive factory-made Drag-car rolling-stock... Just add V-8 & 4-spd easily!) Irony of that was: I had idea to do the like...on a Warlock chassis w/carbon-fiber body... for several years before this! Guess I can forget about "Project: Sacrilidge". Unless... Y'know, the 3rd-gen Camaro had option for a Tech-4 TBI 2.5L OHV I-4... And the first Camaro was based on the 1st-gen X-body chassis, with the body based upon the Super-Nova concept-car! Soooo... Who says my idea must be based only on a Nova body? (Heh-heh-heh!)

You can make 1500 bhp with a 1.5L BMW engine and a little turbecharger.
You can make 10,000hp with a top fuel engine as well which is also irrelevant to this video...

that engine only makes 1500hp because it tacs so damn high, this is an inline 6. Generally, those don't love to rev high. The only things "BMW" about that engine were some of the specs on the block. Thats it, everything else was made by an F1 team.
