Stoic’s funeral and eulogy is one of my favorite pieces of animation. Period. It’s so well put together, and the acting, both from the animators and the voice actors, is just phenomenal. I’ve always said that HTTYD series is the pinnacle of the art of animation.
Me too. It still chokes me up. My Father is the greatest man I have ever known. He taught me the core pillars of respect, morality and honesty. He is someone that even all my friends look up to and respect. I am glad that he is still in my life. That line of Hiccup's when he says, "I was always afraid of becoming my Dad. Mostly because I thought I never could. How do you become someone that great? That selfless?" That is how I have always felt about him. If I manage to become half the man he is, I will consider my life a success.
Personal lost from last year made me kinda dredd this reaction ( though I love the trilogy), I am glad I watched it nontheless but god I am still crying snot and saline right now
This is what makes these movies so good. They didn’t just gloss over the death. They gave it emotion and a point in the movie. These stores are so well done.
So Drago's Bewilderbeast was captured from a young age and abused and tortured to be the perfect weapon. Dreamworks used references to the horrific training that elephants go through (the bullhook in particular; it's used to hurt the sensitive and vulnerable areas of a creature). This is from the Wiki page: The dark Bewilderbeast's behavior is consistent with that of an abused animal, never acting without its master's command from fear of punishment, and lashing out at anything that approaches as it has learned to associate approach with pain. It is likely that Drago's "dominating" behavior had taught the Bewilderbeast to feel helpless under his command, as even though it is big enough to easily kill him should it turn on him, it nonetheless blindly follows orders and has little, if any, initiative to act on its own.
And not only that, that Alpha had, probably, never really felt pain, except from Drago. So when Toothless started blasting it and hurting it, it scared it, because it associated pain with punishment from Drago, and that made Toothless superior to him. And, I believe, one reason it didn't fight back against all the dragons attacking it was because it, REALLY, didn't want to hurt them. The Alpha, like the Chief's duty is to protect it's own.
I went looking to see how this trilogy did in the Oscars - first film lost to Toy Story 3, second one lost to Big Hero 6. third one lost to Toy Story 4. I wish it had won those last two, I can't honestly argue against Toy Story 3!
I absolutely love this trilogy and I believe it's one of the few times where the sequels are not only improvements to the original, but they feel necessary to the core of what it's trying to tell: a story of life, loss, regret, love, and compassion. I think it's an incredible way to not only make it fun and entertaining by using dragons (and making them cute as hell) as a metaphor for coexistence, but just to show that the actions of just a few people can achieve great things for their community and the world at large. I'm super excited to see you both watch the 3rd one!
I love how for the first half or so of the movie it sort of leads the viewer down the path of 'Hiccup completely takes after his mother', but Hiccup's eulogy and Valka's little speech during the funeral serves to remind the viewer just how much Hiccup takes after Stoick as well. "How do you become someone that great? That brave? That... selfless? I guess... you can only... try." "You have the heart of a chief and the soul of a dragon." Hiccup has those same qualities that he admires in his dad. He may not be as big and tough as Stoick, but he's got his father's bravery, his selflessness, his devotion to his people, and he's inherited his values as well. Those attributes coupled with Valka's open-mindedness and willingness to challenge the status quo is what makes Hiccup who he is. He's the best of both his parents.
The people who think that Hiccup isn't like his father weren't paying attention in the first movie. Stoick and Hiccup constantly have the same mannerisms, and Gobber keeps snidely remarking that Hiccup is just as stubborn as Stoick. Honestly, the reason that they butted heads so much was BECAUSE they're so alike. They're both stubborn, have strong wills, and will follow what they believe to the end. When they work together, they can't be beaten, but when they disagree, they'll both die on that hill. Valka is the same way, so Hiccup got two doses of stubbornness.
@@WisteriaDrake People often only take things at face value, unfortunately, and because this movie starts with Hiccup basically telling Astrid that he's nothing like Stoick, and still searching for who he is, then follows that up with the scene of Valka telling Hiccup "All these years, you took after me!" as well as Stoick commenting to Gobber that "He's just like his mother", those moments are definitely meant to reinforce the idea that Hiccup is more like his mother. It's one of the heart-achingly beautiful and tragic parts of Hiccup and Stoick's relationship that Hiccup only comes to understand Stoick's position and viewpoint after his death, realizing that despite their often fundamental differences, he's still his father's son, and his dad raised him to be strong in spirit, brave and devoted to his community, and to share the same values of what it means to be a viking and chief. It only dawns on Hiccup exactly how much he admires and looks up to Stoick, and how similar they are, during the funeral. It's a moment of revelation for him, which makes it a moment of revelation for the audience.
Cate Blanchett's range is ludicrous. Aside from "normal" roles, her role in the anthology film "manifesto" and her part in "I'm not there" (and many more) show what she's capable of
Drago’s scream is the most terrifying sound I’ve heard as a child. Its so dominant and loud and brutal perfect for a character that shows his dominance above others
25:15 I don’t remember if that line was in the trailer, but what I do remember is that they totally spoiled that the dragon rider was his mom in the trailer. They included the “A mother never forgets” line right in the middle of it. I still don’t understand why they did that.

I love the fact that the great bewilderbeast almost is like a mirror to the red death in the first movie. Because in the first movie every dragon gathered and threw food down into a pit, whereas this dragon gives his dragons food FROM the pit.

I agree it could’ve been clearer, but I think the implication is that when the dark alpha ducked into water to get away from Berk’s dragons attacking it, Drago was still on the alpha so would’ve gotten pulled down into the water with it, so presumably he drowned. As other users have said, the alpha was abused from a young age by Drago so he could control it through fear when it was bigger - I hope that when it realized Drago was gone and couldn’t hurt it anymore that it found peace somewhere far away from any shitty abusive humans
Drago is voiced by Djimon Hounsou from Gladiator, The Legend of Tarzan, the Wizard in both Shazam films & Black Adam. The first three films I remember seeing Djimon Hounsou in was the original Stargate film, Amistad, and Deep Rising.
The best movie in the trilogy, imho. High key love the subtle ageing-up of Hiccup and the other kids from the first film, and how the clothes and gear of the other Berk Vikings becomes more and more adapted to their dragon-riding lifestyle.
Having seen this film before I knew the moment was coming, but it doesn’t make it any less shocking or heartwrenching this time. This effing franchise really chose the exact best moment to snap your Hiccup and his mom’s heart in two.

You should watch the series Dragons: Riders of Berk, Defenders of Berk and Race to the Edge, they dive deeper into what happened on that 5 year gap between the first film and this. They expand on Hiccup and Astrid's relationship, Hiccup and his dad, as well as flesh out the rest of the gang, and how Berk adapted to living with dragons. You should also watch the Gift of the Night Fury holiday special because the events of that are referenced in the next film.
A bit of sad Trivia, Drago's method of controlling dragons is based on an actual method of breaking in elephants. Elephants would be captured at a very young age and throughout its youth it would be beaten with a spiked rod, like the one Drago has, until the fear of getting beaten would make it obedient even as an adult.
So... I love this franchise, it might even be my favorite movie franchise ever. However, I am kinda wondering, how does Drago fly Toothless? 🤔 First, he would have to know the controls, I mean, even Hiccup had to use a cheat sheet in the beginning. Second, his foot seems a bit big to fit in the pedal that is made for Hiccup's small prosthetic foot. Oh well 😋
Well, for Dresmwork's film this follows Disney formula very well: You can't have both parents alive... Or any parents if you're main character... Jokes a side. This is amazing sequel, its really hard to do sequel that is same level with original. Entire franchise is amazing.
i have yet to scour and see if any How To Train Your Dragon reactors will acknowledge or at least be aware that there was a TV Show that bridged this story gap during the first and second film 😊
Fun fact: one of the animators were struggling to animate the elder dragon wakening from the water and have to redo all his work plenty of time. But after he finished his part and looked at final result he was pissed off, that most of the dragon was covered in water and not visible 🫠🫠🫠
This movie was my first date with my girlfriend after I graduated highschool. Stoic and Valka's reunion had me shifting in my seat feeling everything, then toothless becoming the alpha had me bouncing in my seat. I tried so hard to keep my cool so she wouldn't think I was weird
Actually Drago did die,if you didn't notice his prosthetic arm got blasted off and since the abused bewildebeest simply retreated and gave up,Drago wouldn't been able to hold on as it went underwater and must have drowned ending him!
If you havent seen it already, I would really recommend checking out Strange Days from 1995 which will be turning 30 next year and is a forgotten masterpiece from Katherine Bigelow and James Cameron, starring Ralph Fiennes, Angela Basset and Juliet Lewis. Its is an incredible movie, but there just aren't that many reactions out there for it so far.

It's nice to have a reaction to Drago where people don't laugh at his screaming.
I always thought it was pretty terrifying.
dropping this right after Mothers' Day was surprisingly on point.
PLEASE REACT TO THE HIDDEN WORLD SOONER THAN LATER!!!
Great, now I'm crying during my lunch break 😢❤
This movie makes me cry every single time
i have yet to scour and see if any How To Train Your Dragon reactors will acknowledge or at least be aware that there was a TV Show that bridged this story gap during the first and second film 😊
Fun fact: one of the animators were struggling to animate the elder dragon wakening from the water and have to redo all his work plenty of time. But after he finished his part and looked at final result he was pissed off, that most of the dragon was covered in water and not visible 🫠🫠🫠
A missed moment for the dragon hunter to say “Winter is coming” when seeing the iceberg
“This- can help him with those tight turns, and this- activates his Alpha Mode, and this- unlocks his Wolverine claws, and this…”
This movie was my first date with my girlfriend after I graduated highschool. Stoic and Valka's reunion had me shifting in my seat feeling everything, then toothless becoming the alpha had me bouncing in my seat. I tried so hard to keep my cool so she wouldn't think I was weird
I thought the mother would be more like dad cuz how he said about breastplate helmet in the first film lmao
You guys need to watch Kit Harrington's promo video with hiccup
Actually Drago did die,if you didn't notice his prosthetic arm got blasted off and since the abused bewildebeest simply retreated and gave up,Drago wouldn't been able to hold on as it went underwater and must have drowned ending him!
Drago most likely died when the bewilderbeast slammed into the water
3?
Three?
Hidden World?!?!?
Please!?!
I’m ready to cry again 😄
Cate Blanchett is Valka.
That white alpha is the God the God Slayer killed in the Thor movie.
The 3rd film is my favorite because it stars Yeji queen of epic hairdos.
16:18 I have a headcanon for the third movie. I have never heard anyone else about this, but if you pay attention to Gobber and a certain new person...
Can you guys watch How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World.
I love that you made fun of Just trust ash 😂😂
What time? I missed it as it went by.
Start at 20:53
Simone is Wildin out with these intros lately 🤣
