Are the spells even worth it in Elden Ring? Surely some of them are right? There is only one way to know for sure which ones are worth casting, and which ones we should be passing by. Check out this Draconic Breathtaking build using only the Dragon Communion Incantations as we see how effective they are in taking on all remembrances in the lands between... even Malenia

Dancer Talisman allows for 8 LB of weight without penalty. Equip a spiral horn shield for +50 to all resistances at just 2 LB.
I don't care if you see this or not but you should absolutely change the title of the video and just convince people you never made it a pass or cast video
Great add mad expensive chair. Get that bread tho. Did not watch the whole add
I'd like to argue that the aspects of the crucible are valid additions since they all utilize dragonic features. A dragon tail, flame breath, dragon horns.
Just tried the discount code and it didn't work, 😢
I always look at spells and weapons in the same light. "The scimitar is great, but it has lower stance damager and shorter reach" "The greatsword is great, but it's a tad slow and the dead frames can get you hit a lot since you're in melee range." "Dragon spells are great, but what they have in damage and range they lack in speed" Always fun to watch these magic runs knowing how much Tulok hates magic.
I love watching him try to play casters like they're martials. "So we can't just get away with trading because the boss damage outpaces us." If you're a caster, why are you trying to trade like a martial? Funny vigor man go brrrr~
@@TheSeptet I just find it funny that he's using a limited amount of spells and he's using a large portion of these big ult-like spells as if they're standard attacks. I don't even think there's a character in the game that specifically only uses dragon spells, not that there's many to begin with. Point is, they're enhancers. If you want spells that act like attacks, that's moreso what glintstone sorceriers are. I played a fire incantations/greatsword build and most of them were good up into the endgame where every boss is doing anime attacks on you, and even then there's a few openings you can pull off to RIP them to shreds. People talk about how bad the Godrick Dragon Hand thing is, (unrelated) but I was having a massive problem with the cemetary shade early, and I used it to ONE shot the CemShade.
He's got a point about the weapon arts being better spells tho. Flame of the Redmanes was my favorite thing ever.
Yeah it always confused me because while a decent percentage of players agree magic is bad there’s no real consensus on whether it’s because they’re too OP or not good enough. And I get the people who complain about the lack of variety but I genuinely think that might be purely on account of them all being the same goofy blue color. There may be 300 weapons but melee users will pick 5-10 and stick to that the entire play through. And a mage user will have all 10 spells on them at the same damn time + use another 20 often enough AND still use regular melee weapons. Shitloads of variety just looks similar
My favorite Dragon? Samwise Gamgee. Cuz he's draggin Frodo all around

I have to admit, I was so confused when he started playing with a sword that I restarted the video because I thought I must have missed something.

Once you work your way through every spell and incantation, I hope you do a final build with all the Casts called Master Caster Blaster, and see if you can win faster.
Now say that again out loud 5 times fast.
the thing is, night comet is objectively the best spell. quick, reliable damage, and it cant be dodged. pure caster "supreme master of all magic" builds always just become... another night comet build. because its the best spell.
@@cassidyshepard6371 That's why faith is more fun to me. Better variety and utility.
@@blackhat4206issue is most faith spells suck. Sure black flame rocks but thats about it. Anyone could of told you dragon incants are worthless, holy damage is a joke, and lightning is unreliable. Most regular flame spells are too low level to matter. You reallly just have black flame anmd like... Night comet as reliable spells, and I LIKE SPELLS. There used to be more good spells. But any time a spell was good fromsoft nerfed it to hell and buffed some random sword.
@@joshuachildress1451 I disagree, unless you’re talking in terms of damage output and casting speed only. Utility is not damage, and spells in this game are supplemented with melee instead of being a complete replacement for it. The dragon spells are some of the most powerful in the game, and they’re balanced by having a long windup, which is a nonissue unless you refuse to use spirit ashes. Black Flame is some of the best, but I’ve had great results with Lightning Spear, Lightning Strike, Honed Bolt, all of the ancient lightning spells, and even Discus of Light has a great FP/damage ratio. Some spells could use some additional hyper armor, or would be improved if they staggered the enemy more reliably, but I think they did spells really well in Elden Ring. Night Comet is a great spell, but so is Loretta’s Greatbow, the sword sorceries, Arc, Pebble, Moon etc. The only reason I prefer faith is the versatility, as you can pop Bestial Vitality or Blessing’s Boon and swap between various damage types on the fly depending on what you need. Results may vary, I suppose, based on stats and skill.
My favorite fictional dragon is probably Rayquaza. Saphira from Eragon is a close second.
I like how you specified fictional. As if there are real dragons.
@@ravenstires1747bearded dragon
@@ravenstires1747Komodo dragon
I liked Grigori from dragons dogma. Stands out from most overly arrogant fictional dragons who serve no big role.
Rayquaza is a pretty dang cool one. Though, perhaps one of my favorites is Paarthurnax from Skyrim....
I dunno, he's like the Pope Turtle of that game. (And he's voiced by Mario... and sounds surprisingly pretty epic.)
(And then Bethesda, in their INFINITE WISDOM, made a quest where you have to kill him. Given to you by an NPC who's supposed to SERVE YOU.... God, I hate Delphine, so, SO much.)
So a legit piece of advice for dragonclaw, unless the enemy is locked down, it's usually a bad idea to go for the follow up. The second smack has a lot of extra endlag compared to the first since the first can chain into other spells. I saw several times during the gargoyle fight where you would have been fine if you used the first hit and rolled out rather than trying to use both
Edit: same thing with draconic tree sentinel
I saw that too. It seems like he was always spamming the follow up, but like you said, it can be more advantageous to only use it once. I did find that the Regalia of Elochaid AoW fully charge is a true wake up after the boss is staggered.
One major error: dragonmaw should have been obtained. Enough damage and hyper armor that as long as you can take 1-2 hits you basically win, because nothing can interrupt you and with the right buffs the damage is just stupid. Probably my 3rd favorite spell in the game, as someone who actually likes spells. #1 is night comet for carrying my first playthrough, #2 is probably Ancient Dragon Lighting Strike, #4 I'd give to Comet Azur, and #5 to Ekzyke's Decay. Pest Threads and Lansaeax's Glaive, as "most OP for what it is" and "coolest looking" respectively.
Also he's using the basic versions of the breath spells, and not the endgame ones you get from killing the named dragons. A pure dragon spell run without ashes was going to go poorly no matter what, but these are also all of the worst dragon spells that he's using.
Too bad ekzykes decay got sledgehammered a while back
imo spells are best used in tandem with melee, not as a replacement for it.
Spellblade builds are my favorites to play because I can switch between melee and spells for different situations.
Yeah, playing as a mostly* pure spellcaster I wouldn't have done it without spirit ashes either; spells are really not something that deserves to be judged out of context, imo, even though I do enjoy these videos.
*Sometimes people get in my face, in which case I simply must stab them with my misericorde.
The single best spell in the game is a melee weapon. Let that sink in. Think about what that actually means for spellcasting, that the best it has to offer is just being a basic melee attack.
@@dontmisunderstand6041 carian slicer is most definitely not “the best magic has to offer”. Magic is just an entirely different way to play the game, it’s a playstyle and it’s not like magic is any weaker than it’s been in previous games, you can still melt most bosses from halfway across the arena with the right setup. This is why tuloc shitting on magic so much is always kinda weird and unwarranted, cause he’s clearly viewing magic through the lens of someone who’s preferred playstyle is melee. Of course magic isn’t going to be your cup of tea if you insist on judging it by the standards of an entirely separate playstyle.
Agreed. My favorite build I’ve made was strength arcane with Mohg’s spear and incants. So versatile.
Yea spell only runs are never really fun in my expirience
My favorite dragon is Bad Dragon
For any one who sees this for the love of god! Do not search that up on google nor your school computer!
Um actually, if you change your location to Antarctica and enter the fog gate at 3:43 PM on January 62nd, Malenia’s AI has a 0.03% chance to break until you hit her, and since night maidens mist doesn’t cause stance damage it’s a super easy win. Therefore, spells are clearly the best 🤓
Wrong!!!! Its Feb 71st. Duh🤪
My favorite dragon is Smaug from the animated Hobbit. That speech still gives me chills decades later.

My favorite fictional dragon is Toothless from How to Train Your Dragon.
That was my favorite movie as a little kid, and the recent memes of him dancing have been AWESOME.
Tulok never fails to fill me up with his massive elden ring content
My favorite dragon is Tulok when he plays a dragon in Elden Ring. My second favorite dragon is Imagine Dragons in Fort Haight.
It's so weird as I'm doing a similar run to this and the only boss that's been a struggle so far is Malenia, because she's Malenia. Most bosses were beat in one or two tries, with exception of Goldfrey, Sewer Mohg, and Commander Niall. All I do is go up to the boss, press "B" to dodge their attack, as I use an XBOX controller, then press the attack button. That's it. That's all I'm doing. I think the only exception was Fia's Champs, where I used two seals to chain cast Dragonclaw. Doing this meant they didn't even have a chance to move.
He's playing really aggressive dragon stuff is slow so most of the time u wait for the big openings he didn't use it but I used the bite a lot and it helped me a lot I struggled with loux and malenia
Well it’s gotta be harder than that but yeah this is my first fromsoft game so I was sure I’d rage quit and permanently uninstall the game after a few hours. Nope it wasn’t really any harder than God of War Ragnarok. We gotta chill on the reputation it pushes a lot of people away
@@Ruisu07Loux is pretty easy if you can get the timing on the stamps down
Shame you didn't use Dragon Maw or Greyoll's Roar so you could actually trade hits
i love the part where he is wearing zero armour for some extra dmg but keeps complaining about how he gets interrupted while casting. i dont need a paragraph to say spells are bad if you play a bad casting build.
The 1 sentence reason I like spells is they give me space from the bosses, and i know they are faster and run right up inside you, but at least for me, the extra time they take to run up helps a ton, makes it easier to see what they are doing, but I guess that mainly heps due to my lack of experience or something. Favorite dragon would have to be Niv Mizzet from MTG
the real reason i love magic is it lets me actually see the boss and when they telegraph their attacks
fighting in melee can often feel like a crap shoot of trying to figure out what attack theyre doing
There’s huge trade offs too because sure you can stay further away but mages are glass cannons and loads of bosses can close that distance so quickly that it’s almost irrelevant. The biggest issue though is spells are so slow sometimes it feels like you can’t get an opportunity to cast, you need timing and thought. I’m saying that as in defending you against magic being the zero skill build. It might be easier in general most of the time but still has loads of finesse that the people who rip on it never consider
Big fan of that last dragon incantation!
Seriously tho, just realize that sword exists last week and now I think it’s my new favorite. Gonna have to do a build around it
Man, "imagine ... in Fort Haight" won't get better than this
If spells only need one sentence here you go, "I think spells are good because laser beams and throwing lightning is cool."
All of the dragon cult incantations are fun to play with, but I couldn't imagine doing a run restricted to just one school of play, I always mix casting and melee depending on the scenario
My favorite fictional dragon is Abyss the Kaiju King! Look him up on your work computer if you've never heard of him!
Haven't watched yet, but I'm going to guess that he'll love Maw. This man likes his big damage and poise, and that thing is a semi truck
Edit: Well dang
literally such a fun spell and he ignores it because the idea of the video is complaining about spells rather than showing off the versatility of the dragon communion spell list
Didn't even use it once. I normally like this guy, but this run was utterly pathetic.
@@slightchanceofrainyeah this run is just bad. He went in wanting to complain and didn't even bother diversifying his spells and then blamed the spells. His spell videos always rub me the wrong way because he spends most of them shitting on spells rather than even trying to see positives but this is just ridiculous.
And then he mentions how important Spirit Ashes are for splitting agro but doesn't point out he's not using them and then complains about agro.
"Here's a spell with infinite hyper armor and the most damage you'll ever get out of a single hit, wanna try using it?"
"nuh uh" *continues talking about why spells are bad*
@@loganjblack not to like keep adding to the (warranted) criticism but he also doesn’t use either golden vow or flame grant me strength despite them being INSANELY good buff spells? like extra damage, stamina recovery, and defense are all super valuable especially when he talks about not being able to trade
Makes me sad that you didn’t use the maw, it’s probably the best of the spells
There may come a day when Phil does D’s quest to get a summon for the Gargoyles boss fight, but it is not this day!
One of my favorite fictional dragons is Saphira from Eragon.
You're so fucking real for the transmission joke
My favorite type of dragons are the A Song of Ice and Fire ones mainly cause they're such a huge investment, like, even after you do your black blood magic ritual to get them, you need to literally let them thrive in Fire and Blood for them to grow any, and I just think that's cool (that and the idea that if I'm just an average person, I can keep a cat sized overall non-lethal dragon, and I like that :3 yay!)
I was glad I got to catch a good chunk of this stream. Phil, Cory, keep up the amazing work we appreciate the hell outta you two.
My favorite fictional dragon is probably Paarthurnax from Skyrim. His lines and his philosophy are still with me to this day, since I played the game as a kid.
Ah, good ol' Party Snax. Gotta love him.
He's just a cooler Master Oogway.
Fav dragon is probably Fatalis from monster hunter, it's a classic looking dragon that hates life as a whole and is hypothetically immortal being able to regenerate from a single scale. Also anyone who wears armor made from it goes insane
It's so hard to pick a favorite dragon, but I gotta say Smaug is up there. Specifically Smaug from the Hobbit movies, as he's the best part of that trilogy and every spoken line he delivers gives me shivers
The Hobbit movies are a mess (though I still largely like them) but they absolutely delivered on both Smaug and the Game of Riddles. Which honestly is kind of all I needed out of them.
Sitting in C7 and gaming feels absolutely awesome! When it's time to unwind, lying back is so comfortable that you can easily catch a good nap.
Draco (Sean Connery in Dragonheart)
Oooh classy choice!
PS: if you have any chance, check on youtube some the italian dub by gigi proietti... it's SO GOOD...
I have made some great double seal/staff builds, but some ppl forget that even with these builds, you need to invest in a weapon that goes with your stats like one i enjoy on my int builds is death ritual spear and it really does change everything to just have one physical weapon you can switch to on a spell build
Edit) also summons just use summons ppl unless you're doing a challenge run
I did a dragon communion build as my third because I wanted a build with high arcane, and in my opinion, it was the strongest build I've done. Each dragon spell gives you access to fire, frost, rot, magic, and poise damage. Being enhanced with the roar and canvas medallions. I paired the spells with Regolia of Elochaid which was a perfect wake up from Dragonclaw. The dragon communion scale pairs perfectly. I never had an issue with a boss because I always had a way around what makes them trouble because the dragon spells give so much versatility.
I've done pure sorcery, I've done dragon spells only, I've done bow only, I've done frenzy flame. All of them lose to a minimum level melee build.
@dontmisunderstand6041 No they absolutely do not.
Stop lying.
@@maxdrags3115 Actually try it yourself. Get good enough at the game to actually notice the difference between builds. Then come back and apologize for your ignorance.
@@dontmisunderstand6041 pure glintstone is stronger than a lot of meele builds, idk what you are on about, if i compare my meele playthrough, one with a good str weapon like serpent hunter, and one with an average str weapon such as the hammer, they both were harder than the pure glintstone run, less damage and you actually had to learn to dodge and find opening instead of just... keeping a safe distance and spamming spiral or comet, i can't speak for other builds but glintstone is really strong.
@@dariusandone3636 You have to learn to dodge to play sorcery too. Only moreso because they literally do less damage than melee, while being in a more dangerous attack range.
Again, I've done the run you're talking about. Pure Glintstone sorcery is the reigning champ as weakest of the multiple dozen builds I've tried.

Not tryna be a spell apologist or anything, but the magma breath incantations come out a bit quicker than some of the other dragon incantations and have a lingering damage hitbox, and greyoll's roar does a pretty solid debuff to enemies as well as solid damage, maybe they coulda helped a smidge🫂
My favourite fictional dragon is the dragon from Panzer Dragoon Saga. I love the level-up mechanic where it changes shape, and then on top of that you can shift it between attacking, defensive, magic-using and speedy forms.
Who's your favorite non-fictional dragon?
@scottjmeldrum Has to be Puff, the Magic Dragon. He lives by the sea.
@@scottjmeldrum I never watched it that much but I think I remember Theo Paphitis being pretty funny?
Greyoll's Roar and Rot Breath are great supplementary tools. Rot Breath's not fit for every fight, but Greyoll's Roar isn't any worse to find an opening for than a charged heavy.
I would love to hear your opinion on the Black Flame Incantations, especially Black Flame Blade and Black Flame Ritual (which is the closest thing to a disengage-tool I've been able to find). Overall I've found the Black Flame Incantations to be pretty reasonable to weave in here and there.
Greyoll's Roar is nice utility. Rot Breath genuinely is the best dragon communion spell by far though. It does the most damage WITHOUT factoring the debuff.
Black Flame is boring, but might actually have the potential to be almost as good as a melee build. Hit the enemy 50 times to win. Compare that to melee damage, which generally hits the enemy significantly less than 50 times before winning.
@@dontmisunderstand6041 For clarification, I was meaning to ask about Black Flame in conjunction with a weapon, rather than standalone.
Also, Black Flame Ritual in particular does way more than 2.5% damage.
@@NorthernDruid I was pretty sure the black flame debuff is a static 2%. The rest of the damage would come from the actual damage of the attack that hits it.

Always love Tulok doing magic runs. Its fun looking at what meets the pass ans what doesn't. Would love to see him do a run with all the spells that have made a pass.

Love the whole new edit with you overlaying the previous layers

Haha, that didn't happen! It's easy to make the mistake of thinking that it did, but actually, you'll find that he totally definitely used the same weapons and spells the whole run!
So happy I got to be there for part of this run. Our father is simply the kind of elden ring content
The real play would be to use two seals and chain cast the dragon slaps so you can play bongo drums. It's pretty strong too
Here is a tip for Dragon Claw. If you have a seal in your off-hand you can use that seal as a faster alternative for the second slam of Dragon Claw. It's pretty good in NG+
My favourite Dragon is Toothless! So cute!
Thanks for your hard work as usual entertaining us 🥺❤️
my favorite part was when Tulok said "is dragoning time" and then he dragoned all over the place
ive been doing a dragon incantation run and just fire/magic breath whatever the enemy is weaker too its pretty good with 25 faith 40 arcane and the arcane hat for another 8 arcane physic for magic damage and unlimited mana for however many seconds. awesome to see someone off handing the staff for incantations the dragon incantations need all the cast speed they can get. but arcane also works for bleed so. godskin peeler bleed is pretty crazy. but idk if i could do the whole game with just dragon incantations either especially not without a summon for distractions
My favorite Dragon is Yevaud/Mr. Underhill from A Wizard of Earthsea/The Rule of Names. An old dragon that stole the treasure of the island nation of Pendor, hides for years on in a small backwater village under the same alias as Frodo Baggins, eats a pirate-wizard named Blackbeard, burns down the village he’d been living in for years for funsies, goes back to Pendor, evicts all the humans, raises a family of dumb little baby dragons, then is forced to watch them all dive face first into the ocean like idiots because a guy on a boat looked at them funny.
Amazing transition.
Never had this much trouble with dragon incantations. I quit using them because they were too easy. I guess this is sort of a paragraph.
It's because you are actually GOOD at the game.
I tried dragon communion as my first and only playthrough and had the opposite problem as you. The early bosses were hard but the end bosses were pretty chill.
It took me only five tries to kill Melania (but I had a summon, so that probably helped with my spellcasting)
I'm so glad to see a Vilheim run, I love Helphen's Steeple and the Onyx Blade

I already knew this after following you for some time but I have to say it. Phil, you're a goddamn treasure.
Love that during the gargoyles fight half of his shown deaths were him continually casting and complaining getting hit during the second hit of dragonclaw which is completely optional and then complaining about deadframes, just saying, doing followups and then complaining that you get hit since you made that decision is crazy
I love Tulok, but let's be real. Half his struggle with spells is his refusal to change up his approach when he uses them.
@@BaWitdathat’s what I’m saying no issue with him he probably my favorite content creator for Elden ring but damn
My favorite dragon is all the dragonmaids: House, Kitchen, Parlor, Chamber, Nurse, & laundry.
The first time I picked up a Dragon Communion spell I misread it as Dragon Communism and I was in. Dragon casting has some weaknesses for sure but it's worth it be part of the Church of Dragon Communism.
Also I get that he's doing it for content but using a little narrow group of spells and then going "oh spells are bad" is so annoying lol. Like the entire point of spells is that you've got a ton of versatility; you've got catch flame when things get close, lightning bolts for quick midrange damage, dragon spells for big powerful casts that're hard to execute but can basically win fights for you when you do, etc. If you stick to one school or one little specialization it's always gonna feel bad (except for fire giant/monk maybe, which really does kinda have everything).
Finally, rot breath is OP. They've nerfed it I think fairly heavily since release and it's still the single scariest button in the game.
Spells hit harder and from further away that greatswords and you can have spells of different damage and cast times to choose from without having to swap to a grace or leveling different weapons.
Did I get the sentence rather than paragraph bit rigth ?
I felt my soul die when you started advocating for glass cannon builds.
Excuse me while I have Vietnam flashbacks to hosts getting insta-gibbed by 414 damage.

These spells need spirit ashes to pull aggro. Otherwise, you're never given a chance to use them more than once or twice at the start.

Great video as always,
I can't say I am surprised though, Rot breath is here, and that is the one that shows up on previous builds. But yeah, I don't think there is a slower class of spells, and given spells speed issues have come up in previous builds it makes sense these would be at best as good as previous showings.
I think my only sticking point is that I have had similar issues with slower heavier weapons when I have tried to use them on my own time. But I am pretty bad at the video games.
Fav fictional dragon: Yevaud from A Wizard of Earthsea.
Godfrey Icon would have been better than Blue Dancer imo. It increases charge attack damage which all of the Dragon spells benefit from. Dragonmaw also has pretty good hyper armor and good physical damage. Dragon spells might be slow, but if built around correctly they are very powerful.
Yep.
Of course, running without armour, and loving faith beyond 15(or 24 for maw), and trying to do a ‘get a hit in’ instead of becoming the boss to most things, means you’ll do poorly.
Grab a shield, (jelly), fgms, gv, roar med, Godfrey icon, sword talisman, and whatever else. (I prefer erdtree favour or great jar talisman so I can have better carry weight), toss on some good armour, and you become a tank, with the force of a tank.
Inarguably the highest percentage of wordplay/stupid puns that I didn’t see coming from a mile away out of all the people doing these runs.
Bravo
The fact that he knows about the gen 1 focus energy bug has restored my faith in humanity
Here’s my sentence to explain why spells are good: They mostly suck, but so do weapons, and there are a few amazing options for both, such as carian slicer, catch flame, comet azur, and frenzied burst, to name a few, and yes this is all one sentence and you said conjunctions made it good sooooooo, yeah have a nice day and keep coming with the amazing videos and L takes about spells lol, srsly love the videos man

So, Malenia's stance breaks are bugged. If she's using a move AT ALL that has hyper armor when it should break. It doesn't break, and just resets her stance pressure....
I found out all this during my Loki playthrough. (I got so pissed off at her, I threw a Mimic Tear at her for phase 2.... I got tired of dying to Ducky Dance, and Star Wars Episode 2....)

Favorite dragon? Really hard to pick, there are so many cool ones. I guess I'll just name a few. Smaug, of course. Maleficent, obviously. Vermithrax Pejorative from Dragonslayer is one of the greatest practical effects ever made. Wargreymon always kicks ass (hard to pick just one Digimon, same goes for Pokemon and Yu-gi-oh). Lastly for a darkhorse pick, Volvagia from Ocarina of Time is a really cool boss.
Appreciate the conjunction junction shoutout
My favorite fictional dragon is paarthunax
so spiked caestus at the start?....
Eh, double, does bleed, you wave your hands at people, close enough to claws
Hey, isnt he even gonna say he passes all of em? I dont know i feel scammed at least try the roar, it lowers defence and attack and as an opener isnt that bad.
Cant wait for the Giddeon Offnir all-spells run. Your suffering is my content
I tuned out for five seconds and was so confused when he just completely swapped from dragon spells to ghostflame
