Basil! I bought one starter plant and will never have to buy it again! It grew so fast that I had to trim it back several times within two months. I stuck every cutting into water and they all started forming roots within about 3 days. I now have 7 plants and will have many more soon. I'm giving plants away to friends and family because I can't eat it all with as fast as it's growing...haha! Its an amazing plant!

What size pot did you use once the roots had grown?
@kbm4409 I'm using pretty small pots at first. If the pot is too big, the plant can't keep up with...absorb- the water in the soil, which can cause root rot.. I kind of eyeball it. I pick pots slightly larger than my root ball. Deep enough to allow the length of the roots and to allow some room for more growth, but not too much. Then, I either plant them in the ground or up-pot them to the next larger size.

I was basil-sitting for my Mom a few weeks ago while she was travelling and I nipped off the tops of the plant before returning it. I put the cuttings into water for a couple of weeks and now have a new plant! Free 😊

I raised my basil from seed in Perlite, super easy as well! Growing seeds in Perlite in general is super easy. But water propagating cut herbs from the store is also a great option!
I live in Australia andI have done this for decades. My trick is when you cut them to the '4 - leaf' stage cut those bigger leaves in 1/2 also . I make sure I only use filtered water and/or Mistuh Sheffs good ol' ... tap water dechlorinator (I have tropical fish so I always have this).You can also dip the end of your cuttings into honey water made from2 cups of water and 1 tbs of honey. Then dip the same cutting into cinnamon powder.

@@pimcramer2569 Honey and cinnamon seems to encourage growth and protects them against fungal problems.
I put basil in my garden but it’s not thriving, although it looks a lot like yours, so maybe I’m wrong about that. I’m a basil novice. I can’t wait to try this.
I found my Basil is kinda picky about where I put it. It wilts in full direct sun, so I moved it to a partial shade place in my back yard. It loves it there and is thriving. Also, like he says here, you gotta be careful with how much water you give them. I rely on body language. If the leaves are drooping, I water it. I never water it if the leaves look happy. I hope your Basil bounces back!
Definitely going to try this🙌. I never realized that roots will grow from just the stems without nodes. As an Italian American we can never have to much basil for homemade pesto😆😋

As you may know Richard. Plants love being talked to and listening to music. However, would you please advise on how I can satisfy my many plants differing tastes in music. Should I play a rolling and ever changing medley throughout the day or select different days for different genre?
Also, to my surprise, my Maranta, Stromanthe, and Calathea detest Christian/Gospel music! I’m at a loss when it comes to finding out what they do like! Any suggestions would by much appreciated together with how to overcome the objections of the neighbours to the volume, as all my plants appear to be a bit Mutt and Jeff. When the Myth Busters did their experiment on playing music to plants, they too found louder the better with the best results coming from Heavy Metal and Classical coming a close second. Fortunately, I don’t have any shrinking violets but keeping everyone else happy is a challenge.
Hello, new sub from Ontario, Canada. My new grow light arrives today and my plant dryness meter in a couple of days. I have a new three tier rack coming in a couple of weeks. I like your common sense and voice. I have plans for a second grow light for the rack. I am getting a 9 foot snake plant from my 87 year old mom and I will need your help because I don't want to kill it. Plans for it include, repotting, splitting into more pots, and cutting tops off and putting in glass with pebbles like you did. I have already rescued some old glass jars and even an old huge heavy glass punch bowl, which is going to look awesome I hope. Thanks for all your information and inspiration. And yes I have english ivy and I love it. lol

I’ve done it, it’s been growing well for 10 months, under a sheltered shade cloth in the garden, they were about to go to flower you can stop it from bolting by cutting the flowers off, they’ll get thru our winter I have them protected from the cold, also I’ve now got tomato sprouting way out of season, just pop a plastic over it to keep the stem protected they’ll be fine did the same last winter
Do you find it hard to stop them though? They a bit like a mess after a while

Mr Sheffield, I bought a very young Monstera Deliciosa “ when I say young I mean no bigger then a large can of Red Bull “ from my local Morisons store over a month ago now advertised for only £2.50 I went for the one which had a new leaf about to unfurl what a bargain I thought. I got it home & stuck my moisturiser meter in & it said soil wet so I left it alone for two weeks until the soil was at a dry point where I was happy to water & fertilise in that time the leaf which was unfurling has now fully opened. But that’s it Mr Sheffield I’ve had zero growth & it’s in the same South facing window as it’s big brother Dave the Monstera. So this morning Friday 10.05.24 I took it out of it’s pot & re-potted it back in the same pot but was a mixture of potting soil & Perlite with a small bit of bamboo for moral support 🤞. A part of me was like just lob it in the bin but another part of me is like “no just give it time “ I’m hoping to see a difference in a few weeks. The roots looked healthy nice & white when I took it out but very thin 🪴🌱🤞
They do tend to grow very slowly

Only thing i can add based on taking outdoor cuttings would be that i would have made the cut at the node on the stem. I can see root growth on the nodes even on the rotting stems below the node
They were already cut so I worked with what I had. Wanted a nice long piece
You should do more side by side. Half of the cuttings in natural light, and half under the growlight.

I generally do one pot per plant. Not sure on the exact size. Not big
Not adding fertilizer I can agree with but just dunking them in not only tap water but Sheffield tap water at that! As you have said before, your water is soft. If the Ph is too low it will dehydrate the cut ends of the stems. In turn, inhibit the osmotic efforts of any forming proto-roots to take up water. Water, which also being soft may be short on any minerals at all. The purifying damaged cells will then form a stagnant barrier of film… etc.
To avoid a long tech explanation and yet keep it simple. Think of neutral Ph pond water teaming with microscopic life. You can mimic that by just leaving some water in a jam jar with a bit of soil at the bottom for a few days on a window sill - until it looks slightly green. That shows it has chemically balanced and capable of sustaining chlorophyll based life.
I suppose some may want to microwave it to sterilize it after that - just have to use common sense here.
This gives the cuttings a fighting chance.

Honestly I wouldn't bother, yes it works, but if you buy Seeds, the process is even cheaper and easier - and you can grow the variety you like.
