I killed a few dozen before I made the decision to educate myself on plant care (I still kill some shhhhh) I now have nearly 200 beautiful plants and all because I bought a $13 moisture meter (thanks to you 😉) In time we learn by looking at our plants when they want mommies attention🌿💚
Your suggestion of a water meter has made a 100% difference with caring for my plants. I never water now without sticking it in the soil in various areas to see if it needs water. There have been times when looking at the top of the soil I think, this plant needs water only to see it doesn't at all.

I wholehearted agree with the plastic pots tip. I too have an -unhealthy- healthy obsession with all things plants, but also, I'm an _aesthetics maniac_ . I *always* used put my plants straight into a nice ceramic/stone/clay pot straight out of the nursey pots. It's something I wish I'd not ever gotten into the habit of doing. Roll on some years and I've slowly been repotting those older plants into nursery pots and always keeping the new plants left in them, and It's made a huge difference in the overall health of the plants! I do still have a few that are directly potted, simply because of their awkward shape - I'm talking about the rounded ceramics that barely give enough room for a small sized nursey pot - so much wasted room. I take special care with these guys though when watering, and they seem to be doing alright.. but it's still not ideal.
I can totally relate to the type of round:ish shaped ceramic pots that are near impossible to put a fitting nursery pot inside of. I've got two beautiful large pots, with huge ZZ-plants inside, and the watering of those is a total guessing game except from lifting them and estimating their weight. I'm sure there's some rotten roots hiding down there from being too generous with the watering sometimes, but overall they have actually thrived during their 4~ years in there & are almost constantly pushing out new growth. I'm eager to repot them next spring and take a look at what has actually been going on in the root-department during all these years of watering them very haphazardly.
A little tip with dechlorinating water without chemicals. If you can keep your water out for 24hrs the chlorine discapates. Even with aquarium treatments it should be left for a period of time to treat it. I learned this keeping aquariums. I think a good tip also from aquariums is giving water time to come up to room temperature. While it's warm it can stay outside and really warm up. 'Indoor' plants don't like it cold so water straight from the tap can cause shock and decline in many plants. I killed a couple of Ficus Bonsai by doing this. Now mine is flourishing. I wanted to let you know that what you said to remove chlorine, YES, you can simply let tap water sit out for a few days, and it will eventually vaporize into the air. However, Chloramines are what the majority of treatment plants use in the USA and other places because it is more efficacious than just chlorine. (You can ask for a water quality report from the local authority to see if they are using chloramine.) Chloramines are a more complex combination of ammonia and free chlorine, which means they aren’t capable of evaporating. Thank you for reminding me about covering with a plastic bag. I've done this on new young plants but I may try it on my older avacado plant that likes to drop leaves.
@laurel7175 Absolutely right, chloramine and flourides that some countries add are much more difficult to remove. Not an issue for this channel though.
For my plants and my aquariums I keep dechlorinated water in 5L containers. This gets it to room temp and means it is always ready to go. Aquariums also make the best, IMHO, water propagation tanks. I have a 30cm cube with just half a dozen nano fish and some shrimp in it and it is amazing for cuttings. Thank you so much for your great videos

I don't remember which of your great videos gave this advice, but putting a cutting of pothos with other plant cuttings really works to promote root growth on the other plant!! Like someone else said, " love your sense of humor" (& your accent). 😂 I also like the various clips you put in your videos. Stay well.
Thank you for this vieo, it was exactly what I needed. A fairly new plant mom, and have introduced thrips in my collection with my monstera, and they are no fun to play with.. But this video reminds me that there is a learning curve to everything
My favourite part of working at a garden centre was working with customers to find the exact plant that would work for them, It was almost always a pothos or snake plant but still, it was really fun.
I follow quiet few plant YT channels. Obviously they educational ans I've learned a lot.... But this one is my MAIN and favourite channel to watch ❤️ thank you. I have a small request. As I am proud plant parent only less than a year... Ive made huge progress over the spring and summer with ur tips (water throughout above sink, water conditioner, light, read what the plant needs, Inspect them properly, repot my old soil quick with ur advice or propagation) 😍I've saved and grow successfully many species (from seeds, small stems and even sick plants saved from dead shelf from store 🤗). However.... And here is the fun part... Ive no idea how to prepare to winter in uk... Most of my plants grow on window sills, some still enjoying outdoor weather... But.. How not to kill them on cold narrow sill or lack of light or Humidity? Grow lights in a whole house (im not sure if i can manage to do for all), 🤷 my energy bill is high enough 😭 humidifier? (small ones won't manage to do the job for all of them)... HEEEELPPPPP😭😭😭😭😭 Plz do long video to explain like to a toddler... How To NOT kill plants over the winter! 😭 It's my first winter to come...how to prepare them? Warm regards from Luton 🤗
Thank you 😊. I’ve got this I made last year. Might update it for this winter 5 Tips to Keep Your Plants Alive This Winter ua-cam.com/video/-4k2_MZwu5E/v-deo.html
I only have a schedule for checking my plants with the moisture meter - I check it every thursday - the plants, that are dry, get watered, the rest don't; if a plant generally likes it more moist and is not dry enough on thursday, I check those again on Sunday and water if ready -> works great so far :D
3:00 Hahaha My mother-in-law always said she had a Black Thumb. Imagine then, I once gave her a plant in a pot that had no drainage holes (yeah, I didn't respect that then. ) It was years before any plant was happy in it. Plant after plant died -but it's a BEAUTIFUL pot... Fast forward 25 years, a Christmas Cactus has since managed to happily reside in said pot. It always feels to me like my mother-in-law's black thumb legacy has been remedied, and justifies my wish to keep this pot in Mom R.'s memory. Long way to go, huh? 😅
I wrote an email to the makers of Stress Coat asking whether the product removes fertilizer from water. They sent back a very nice reply saying Stress Coat does not remove fertilizer, but the cannot recommend using Stress Coat with house plants because they have not studied the affects.
😂 …your honesty 😝 about plant care is so relatable Do you have any Hoya care videos? I’m want to add Hoyas native to the Philippines to my collection. Most of these Hoya videos find are in Filipino..(I’m Filipino who can only speak English 🥴) (Your 🇺🇸 fan)
My personal favorite when reading the provided info tag is "Assorted foliage." 😶 well, *that* clears it up! Snap in the app and read the story. When you see any mention of humidity, RUN!!!! My second search : toxicity to animals. I don't need another angry drama queen in my house.....looking at you Geo. Yeah YOU!😏😉
Thank you for another awesome video :D I'm currently trying to get the guts up to chop the top off my Ficus lyrata - its about 4.5ft tall. I used to keep it outside in the summertime - it loved it. Loads of leaves. Then one weekend it was insanely windy. I found it three days later lying on the floor missing all but four leaves on the top. This was about seven years ago and it has only grown one new leaf since. I am sure binning it would improve my collections looks but for the moment it just sort of sits there until I grow a pair and get the secateurs.
@@SheffieldMadePlants It is definitely the way to go, I'm quite attached to this plant and don't want to kill it but seven years looking like a cotton bud just isn't a good look. I will give it a go tomorrow if my nerve doesn't fail me!
I had a Rubber Plant that was the same, it looked awful, long leggy stems with a few.leaves at the top. I steeled myself, chopped it all the way down to the soil, stuck the top few stems into water to propagate, put the pot outside intending on recycling the whole thing into the flowerbeds and forgot about it, within a few weeks I started to see new growth. Not only did I have to repot it into a bigger pot last year but the thing is as tall as me and looks amazing. I ended up sticking the propagated/rooted stems in with it but I make sure I put her outside at the first chance every spring. I just have to find a big enough spot to put her when she comes back in next month, she does not like being in the house at all. Good luck with your plant, sometimes doing the draatic thing can shock them back into even bigger and better. 😊
@@Rebecca-qx1et Thank you so much for sharing! Its amazing how doing something so drastic can really help a plant get back into its growing groove. I will definitely be chopping mine back in the morning.
à few years ago i coudn't keep anything alive. then i moved, bought a bonsai ficus and i've now ended up with quite the collection of plants. green thumb, talent. pff, it's just time, efford and the will to learn. :D
Thanks for tips on buying plants I was looking at some fiddle leaf plants and they had they had pen size dots and I didn’t know so I didn’t get only had them on one or two leaves
That was one thing I was hesitant about. Using the stress coat water on my calatheas and prayer plants. I still use the distilled. Maybe I should try it now
On propagating your way out of a mess: I've tried this TWICE with my lucky bamboo and gotten nothing but a mushy root end either time - despite watching UA-camrs show how easy it is! Haven't seen many Dracaenae on your vids, but so many plants, maybe I missed. If your thing, maybe a vid idea?
Nice video! My small mango seedling is starting to die, especially after I watered it and after I used wet paper towel to wipe its leaves or leaf I should say, becase it dropped 3 out of 4 leaves. And it's wilting so much, even the stem started twisting and the top looks as if it's rotting and there weren't as many spider mites. So I checked the roots, annnnnd there were basically no roots left and it smelled bad. Only the main root was still alive from the inner layers. This soil also had really thrown me off with the moisture. I'm gonna go out and look for pesticides or fungcides or even hydrogen peroxide. I don't wanna lose my beloved mango
Did you let the soil dry between waterings ? Otherwise roots will rot because of the anaerobic environment. If you want to use something, if you leave the plant in the pot, let the soil dry, then use hydrogen peroxide, one part 3% hydrogen peroxide and two parts water, and put it in a watering can or spray bottle. You can either use it while the plant is still in the pot, or after taking it out of the pot and spray the root ball. That should kill the bacteria responsible for root rot. If there very few roots left, the plant may shed a lot of leaves but it may still recover and make a comeback, however if there are no roots it's a lost cause.
@@Daniele63 A few hours ago I checked the roots and basically all the secondary roots have died in fact, they're completely gone, so this is very extreme in severity root rot and decay. The main root was partially decayed, but the remaining parts of it were alive. And there are side/secondary roots, that are somewhat alive here and there and one microscopic root, but it still looks absolutely abysmal. But I still don't have hydrogen peroxide and I don't exactly know which shops have hydrogen peroxide. And the stem is starting to twist, the remaining leaf is basically dried to the point of no recovery. I don't wanna lose my beloved mango. I've never used hydrogen peroxide. I would have already had one for mny months, if I had known where they sell hydrogen peroxide.
@@АлександърДенев2 I've never used it either and never needed to. If you water properly then you will never need it. In your case it's so extreme i don't know if it's worth the hassle
Hey Mr.Sheffield and the community! I have a question: i’ve repotted my plants more than 2 weeks ago, pots are not big (13cm), and the soil just doesn’t dry. I moved it to more light and airy area, ruffled the soil but it still doesn’t dry. Do I need to repot it again into another soil? Or should I just wait, because there’s just not enough light and temperature is not high in the apartment? I’m afraid or root rot. Thank you!
Another great unpretentious video🌻 don't get me wrong, I do love a little peak into the more Instagram, 15 bedrooms, everything's white, with 6 swimming pools and 12 dogs uploads 😂 but they're problematic for a number is reasons. Mainly, we don't live in a sun drenched climate(Irish weather can only be matched by British 😂) By you keeping it real, makes us feel more competent and not afraid to try things. Thank you Me Sheffield 😅😅 and my best regards to the suffering Mrs Sheffield
Ok I care for for my sister's banana plants. And she has some miscommunication.. thinking they need alot of fertilizer. Like using one type WITH conting to use the other. And she thinks they ALWAYS need to be watered (they are to big to run under a sink, yes they have drainage holes but no trays!! And thier on wood!!!) Can you make a video on banana plants?
Hi! I bought the API treatment; I'll try it in my next watering cycle. Can it be used on lucky bamboo? I wish I knew about planting cuttings for the Transcandensia (sp?). I had one that grew out nicely for four months...then she went to the big garden in the sky. ☹️
On "companions": so far, I've had no issues with plants from (nameless big box) but am pretty sure my fungus gnats came from highest-rated garden centre in the city. Quarantine everything - don't trust the name/Google rating.
I bought a bad cactus the other day 😂 I haven't touched it and it looks to be failing. Greenthumbs are developed. I can't grow everything, and I'm okay with that. I cannot grow tradescantia at all. Alocasia I do well.
Strange that you have Snake Plants not doing well away from the window. I live in a row house like you, and it's in a narrow street so at the front and at the back there's my kitchen build-out and my neighbour's build-out taking a lot of light. So in the middle of the living room plants really struggle but Snake Plants thrive. I do go weeks and weeks without watering them, maybe that benefits them? One thing I really have to start doing is quarantine my cacti when I buy a new one. More than once I've lost a couple because I brought in spider mites. I always look for them before buying a new cactus but sometimes there aren't any visible signs of them yet when I buy a new cactus. Lately I've seen a lot of cacti in shops with spider mite webs.
Do you have an oak leaf ficus/ficus quercifolia/string of frogs? I finally got a few and I love them so much!! There is, however, a lack of youtube videos dedicated to them :( I feel like I could learn more about them and you're a good teacher so, if you have experience with them, I'd love to see a video!
@@SheffieldMadePlants well heck lol. I couldn't find any in shops either. After half a year of searching, I gave up and got some great ones from an etsy shop. Thanks for the reply!
New to the channel, really enjoying your content! You're presentation skills seem to be improving exponentially as well. The "acting" parts are hilarious, reminds me of LTT.
Hi My rubber plant leaves are turning yellow and dropping off. The top was getting a new leaf very quickly. But this is stoped also. What can I do to put it right.
Lol You are in rare form..If the info wasn't on point, I would suspect you have been drinking!!🙄😎. You literally had me rolling with your oneliners okay? Thanks for your candid confessions too.😁😁😁😁🤗
I hate after obtaining a new plant, spending literally hours trying to rearrange my existing plants to fit it in😢. I have now got 8 yes 8 grow lights, to have plants in gloomy corners. Only last week i went to my DIY store for building materials, swearing blind NOT to get any more plants! Oops came home with 3 sickly clearance plants and fecking 6 baby lavender which i want to grow indoors WTF i needed help.

Maybe if i convert my attic, there will be more space, for homeless and neglected plants 🤣 P.S Your videos are great, always makes my day to see a new download 👍 Unless its one about torture. 😱
But, my mom has two Calathea and she’s using distilled water and there browning excessively. How do we 1: nurse them back to health, and 2: get them to stop browning? She did the research before and it looked like it would do great in our house. What is she doing wrong?

I also like the various clips you put in your videos. Stay well.
Wonderful!
Thank you for this vieo, it was exactly what I needed. A fairly new plant mom, and have introduced thrips in my collection with my monstera, and they are no fun to play with.. But this video reminds me that there is a learning curve to everything
Glad it was helpful! Thrips sure are a nightmare
"bought plants without having any idea where we're going to put them" - so true 😂
😅
😂
My favourite part of working at a garden centre was working with customers to find the exact plant that would work for them, It was almost always a pothos or snake plant but still, it was really fun.
Love that!
I LIKE the Humor Mr. Sheffield provides on his videos.
Thank you 😊
Nice video, thanks too!
Glad you liked it!
Just started with this hobby and i've seen so many helpful tips, and love the humor of the channel. Good job man keep up the great content!
Thanks, will do!
HEEEELPPPPP😭😭😭😭😭
Plz do long video to explain like to a toddler... How To NOT kill plants over the winter! 😭 It's my first winter to come...how to prepare them?
Warm regards from Luton 🤗
Thank you 😊. I’ve got this I made last year. Might update it for this winter

Thank you 😊
Funny and informative👍🪴😊Thanks a million! 💚💚💚
Glad you enjoyed it!
I only have a schedule for checking my plants with the moisture meter - I check it every thursday - the plants, that are dry, get watered, the rest don't; if a plant generally likes it more moist and is not dry enough on thursday, I check those again on Sunday and water if ready -> works great so far :D
Perfect way to do it 👌
3:00 Hahaha
My mother-in-law always said she had a Black Thumb.
Learning is really the fun part with the occasional triumph when things go right.
Absolutely 👍
Loved the video! Love your channel❤
Thank you so much!!
You're hilarious... love this. 😂 My absolute favorite plant guy on the web ❤
Wow, thanks!
I wrote an email to the makers of Stress Coat asking whether the product removes fertilizer from water. They sent back a very nice reply saying Stress Coat does not remove fertilizer, but the cannot recommend using Stress Coat with house plants because they have not studied the affects.
Thanks for the info! I’ll keep at it. Seems to work
Hi, such a great, hilarious, educational video! Great tips!!!!
Thanks so much!

You keep me in stitches while I learn great tips!! You are a genius with your new way of doing your videos. I love it. Thanks!!!
Thank you 😊
I love Mr Sheffield!

😂 …your honesty 😝 about plant care is so relatable
Do you have any Hoya care videos? I’m want to add Hoyas native to the Philippines to my collection. Most of these Hoya videos find are in Filipino..(I’m Filipino who can only speak English 🥴)
(Your 🇺🇸 fan)
Thank you 😊. Not got one of Hoya yet but will add it to the list
Yeah YOU!😏😉
Assorted foliage is the worst!
So enjoyable, Thank you I enjoy your videos so much and so helpful too!!
I'm so glad!
Thank you for another awesome video :D
I'm currently trying to get the guts up to chop the top off my Ficus lyrata - its about 4.5ft tall.
A good hard prune sounds like just the ticket
Be very careful, you will fall into plant addiction before you know it😊
Exactly 💯

Thanks for tips on buying plants I was looking at some fiddle leaf plants and they had they had pen size dots and I didn’t know so I didn’t get only had them on one or two leaves
Best to avoid in doubt 👍
I love your videos. So funny and I always learn something. Your the Monty Don in house plants.
Thanks so much 😁
That was one thing I was hesitant about. Using the stress coat water on my calatheas and prayer plants. I still use the distilled. Maybe I should try it now
Distilled is great if you’re happy with it. Stress coat is good alternative
@@SheffieldMadePlants my other plants seem to don't mind the stress coat water. I have been using it for a month now I believe maybe longer.
Lots of good tips in this video 👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸
Thanks 👍
amazing video always love watching ...very infotmative🎉
Thanks so much!
Thanks for the idea 👍
I’ve never had much luck getting a mango from seedling to established plant indoors.
My calathea love affair is that it is ... now outdoors got beautiful and then when.. indoor fussy again, i think i 'm trauma bounded..lol
Maybe just accept your fate 😅
Hey Mr.Sheffield and the community!
I have a question: i’ve repotted my plants more than 2 weeks ago, pots are not big (13cm), and the soil just doesn’t dry. I moved it to more light and airy area, ruffled the soil but it still doesn’t dry. Do I need to repot it again into another soil? Or should I just wait, because there’s just not enough light and temperature is not high in the apartment? I’m afraid or root rot.
Thank you!
What’s in the soil? If it’s taking weeks then might need a change
This is such a good channel
Thank you 😊
Another great unpretentious video🌻 don't get me wrong, I do love a little peak into the more Instagram, 15 bedrooms, everything's white, with 6 swimming pools and 12 dogs uploads 😂 but they're problematic for a number is reasons. Mainly, we don't live in a sun drenched climate(Irish weather can only be matched by British 😂) By you keeping it real, makes us feel more competent and not afraid to try things. Thank you Me Sheffield 😅😅 and my best regards to the suffering Mrs Sheffield
Thank you 😊. I’ll send her your regards 😂
I always read, snake plants do not like much light... mine got too tall near the window, so I put them in the hall with lower light... 😱
I’d need to get the plant first 😅
Hi! I bought the API treatment; I'll try it in my next watering cycle. Can it be used on lucky bamboo?
I wish I knew about planting cuttings for the Transcandensia (sp?). I had one that grew out nicely for four months...then she went to the big garden in the sky. ☹️
Can be used on any plant as far as I know. Yes trads tend to do that ☹️
On "companions": so far, I've had no issues with plants from (nameless big box) but am pretty sure my fungus gnats came from highest-rated garden centre in the city. Quarantine everything - don't trust the name/Google rating.
Amen to that
I bought a bad cactus the other day 😂 I haven't touched it and it looks to be failing. Greenthumbs are developed. I can't grow everything, and I'm okay with that. I cannot grow tradescantia at all. Alocasia I do well.
Some plants are just hit or miss
I can’t remember mentioning snake plant struggles. Mine are fine and do well without watering for a while
Do you have an oak leaf ficus/ficus quercifolia/string of frogs? I finally got a few and I love them so much!! There is, however, a lack of youtube videos dedicated to them :( I feel like I could learn more about them and you're a good teacher so, if you have experience with them, I'd love to see a video!
I don’t have those. Never seen them in the shops near me.
@@SheffieldMadePlants well heck lol. I couldn't find any in shops either. After half a year of searching, I gave up and got some great ones from an etsy shop. Thanks for the reply!

Awesome, thank you!
Who Is the stranger in this video? Just curious. Love your videos...

Wait should i be watering from the bottom plate or the top? Does it matter?
Doesn’t matter. I prefer bottom
Haha I love your honesty 😂

Hi
My rubber plant leaves are turning yellow and dropping off. The top was getting a new leaf very quickly. But this is stoped also.
What can I do to put it right.
Hard to say without seeing it. You need to assess it’s light and roots etc
Lol You are in rare form..If the info wasn't on point, I would suspect you have been drinking!!🙄😎. You literally had me rolling with your oneliners okay?
Thanks for your candid confessions too.😁😁😁😁🤗
You’re a ⭐️
love the fight club saying haha
I hate after obtaining a new plant, spending literally hours trying to rearrange my existing plants to fit it in😢. I have now got 8 yes 8 grow lights, to have plants in gloomy corners.
Only last week i went to my DIY store for building materials, swearing blind NOT to get any more plants!
Oops came home with 3 sickly clearance plants and fecking 6 baby lavender which i want to grow indoors WTF i needed help.
Time to go yourself onto a clinic 😂
@@SheffieldMadePlants I know BUT there are sooooo many plants that need loving and caring homes 🙄 honestly! Maybe if i convert my attic, there will be more space, for homeless and neglected plants 🤣
P.S Your videos are great, always makes my day to see a new download 👍
Unless its one about torture. 😱
But, my mom has two Calathea and she’s using distilled water and there browning excessively. How do we 1: nurse them back to health, and 2: get them to stop browning? She did the research before and it looked like it would do great in our house. What is she doing wrong?
Hard to say without seeing. Is the watering on point?
I love your new video style. So full of humour 😂❤
Keep up the good work!
As for the water conditioner: do you let the water sit a bit for it to do its work or is it ready instantly?
Thanks! It’s ready pretty much straight away
