@@bobbierobinson6269 I sort of expected it and its fine its not bad by any means, but I hate it just because well I wanted them to live and be together, I really think J will never ever be happy ever and one day he will regret it and realize just how good he actually had it with his uncles and home and jobs with them ya know. He took it to far and now the entire family is ruined, and while he may have"won" if you look at it from that perspective in reality everyone just lost including J who will never find fulfillment or peace, and dang Craig getting shot was bad enough but Pope to yeah that was a dang shame hated that man!. Overall great series and great final season but yeah super harsh and tragic. I wonder sometimes if his Uncles had just treated him even just a bit more respectfull and more like one of there own if maybe he woulda not taken it that far and stayed with them, and not screwed them over/get them killed, but in all honesty he probably woulda done it anyways he is just a cold guy and probably a sociopath as well on top of someone who has an insatiable hunger for power.

For someone who was told what to do the entire film, J finally gains control in this scene. You have to enjoy the contrast of Jacqui Weaver and Guy Pearce's characters as a parental figure to J - both are using him to get what they want, however he wants to be connected to Weaver because of his family ties but also wants to be connected to Pierce to get justice for his girlfriend. Ultimately his decision is corrupted by the system he has been brought up in, even though the Police are corrupt themselves.

  • @owtovluv

The case is finished, and the brothers are acquited for the crimes they've committed. This is due mostly to J choosing to withhold the evidence the police need to charge the brothers for the murders. Animal Kingdom conveys exactly what it represents. As Leckie tells young J that there are the strong and there are the weak. This movie shows the intertwining concepts of both the strong and the weak. The strong can be weak, exemplified by Leckie himself counting on evidence J knows. How the cops rendered their frustrations and desperation by shooting Baz. The weak can be strong, portrayed by J who is seen as weak, but in fact is strong in the end. Understanding that no one but himself can protect him. In true animal instincts he navigates himself in this Animal Kingdom. A young J observing and soaking in all the complicities of both sides who assure him that he is protected. This end montage means many things, J's surrender to the world he is dealt. J's debut to adulthood, making such a risky choice with conviction. J knows that this all started with Pope, his psychopathic uncle who is criminally insane with unstable tendencies. Pope the true menace that he is, is the manipulator who is capable of anything and everything, the beacon of crime in this family. J realises this, and kills Pope, one he's a crazy cunt involving henious crimes into the family, and two he killed the only saving grace in his life. The only true sanctuary, after the death of his mother and the mad chaos he is thrusted into, his girlfriend Nicky. The nod, or stare between Darren and J is to say it's over. Pope is shown to be quite the bully in his passive aggressive way, and the instigater. He coaxed his way to killing the police with his brothers by saying "what are you going to do about it" to Darren. J knowing Pope's reputation and tendencies won't survive long with Pope around. The police can't protect him, nor can he live a life with Pope in it. Janine is weak without her sons, so Janine (the mother) will not be a threat. Darren and J are free, free to roam the animal kingdom. J knows that killing Pope won't put him away. The police were after Pope in the first place, J did them a favour. A fovour that won't go unseen by Leckie, so they'll probably pull strings to acquit J. In end J survives the Animal Kingdom.

    • @elliott8175
      @elliott8175 7 років тому +6

Quite a good review. Even agreeing with most of what you've said here, he still remains an enigmatic character though, that "J". How aware was he of Janine's psychopathic behaviour?
He brightened up as a character around Baz when he was making him wash his hands saying "no one's invisible", and when being told by the detective how to cook, etc. This seemed to imply that he would, if given an easy choose, choose an innocent life - but in the end he seems in a position to make that choice (clever enough to take advantage of it), and chooses to commit a crime and embrace the psychopath .....which fits in with his psychopathic behaviour in the opening scene.
So we agree that he's clever.
But if he's a psychopath, what does he want? Revenge for the murder of a loved one makes no sense for a psychopath.
And if he's empathetic and observant of his environment then returning to the psychopaths and criminals makes no sense - maybe killing Pope ...but embracing Janine?
Hmm. I still can't figure him out!
I love enigmatic characters in films. He was enigmatic and compelling from the start, but he lived up to it! Great, subtle acting.

Tony Lleshi -- The police executed him. Many of the events in the film truly did occur and the extrajudicial killings of suspects by the armed robbery squad was really happening here in Melbourne at a point in time. The revenge act by the group where two young police officers are ambushed and killed really did happen here aswell. I strongly recommend you watch the film. @@elliott8175 He had a dependent relationship with his mother. Then established one with his grandmother. Does he really want a life of looking over his shoulder and or sleeping with one eye open. Yes he realizes after surviving the police raid that was put together to stop him from giving evidence that would convict his uncles and potentially leading to them flipping on cops that took bribes. That he has to protect himself. He desires to have family structure in his life. Pope was only threat preventing him from having that stability. He embraced he because he basically killed the provider of the family. He's probably going to have to step into that position. Pope is somewhat unwilling to adapt to the new criminal underworld.

Even withthe horrible things a particular person has done. Or will he with something akin to a blunt force trauma experience, become one of the strong. Jessica Vaquero Pope (the dead one) killed J's girlfriend to keep her quiet. J figured it out when he went back to the house the following morning after staying in a safe house with a detective. He saw Nicky's bracelet outside, called her phone, and heard it ringing in a nearby car boot.

    • @oceandark3044

Also, metaphorically, J is now the alpha male. The entire story is J trying to figure out his place in the world (the reason the movie is called Animal Kingdom is because that's the metaphor they go with for life). J suddenly realized that everyone will take from him, his girlfriend, his things, his freedom, if he isn't the apex predator. So he gunned down Pope, demonstrated his dominance to Darren, and hugged his grandmother protectively. He has learned how to survive and thrive. In a pride of lions, this would be the moment when a new male defeats the current pride's male.

Didn't Jay kill Smurf after he killed Pope? Her hands kinda went down...

That's her submission to the new reality. She was going to keep going along with Pope as the provider. Despite her admission of only having love left for her youngest son and that Pope was crazy eventually would of gotten them unstuck.

Watch our movie (Australia) and you will see what a masterpiece this movie is and how it became the tv series.

J returns to his family. He was dependent on his mother and became dependent on Grandmother. He needs family structure in his life. He understands that as long as Pope alive he will have to look over his shoulder and sleep with one eye. Pope is a threat to his family stability. His criminal schemes were going get them eventually unstuck.
