Barry (Joel Edgerton) talks to Pope (Ben Mendelsohn) about living a straight life.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
A youngster is given an inside look at a criminal empire that also happens to be his family in this independent drama. Teenage Joshua Cody (James Frecheville) is suddenly on his own after his mother's drug habit catches up with her, and he's taken in by his grandmother Smurf (Jacki Weaver), usually regarded as the black sheep of the family. Joshua quickly learns Smurf's reputation is well deserved; she and her four sons are members of a mid-level crime syndicate that operates out of her home in Melbourne. Baz (Joel Edgerton) looks after the money and is urging Smurf to move into something legit, Pope (Ben Mendelsohn) is a criminal jack-of-all-trades who never lets go of a grudge, Darren (Luke Ford) is an enforcer with an unfortunate weak streak, and Craig (Sullivan Stapleton) is a drug dealer who has become addicted to his own product. When Baz is murdered, the family's voice of reason is gone, and the unstable Pope takes the lead in the family's hierarchy; as suspicions fall on Joshua, the quiet newcomer is moved out of the house to keep him safe. Nathan Leckie (Guy Pearce) is a police detective who has found out who Joshua is and what he knows, and he tries to convince the teenager to help him put the Cody family behind bars, though Joshua isn't certain about his loyalties to these outlaws who are also his blood. The first feature film from director David Michod, Animal Kingdom was an official selection at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, where it received the World Cinema Jury Prize for Best Dramatic Feature.

first time I saw this I couldn't sit still, it was so disturbing - and damn good.
man was i bummed when they whacked out barry so early in the film, just as you start noticing he's the most interesting character in the film, hes gone.

Love how Mandelson carries the exact right amount of ciggiebutt brain in his performance. Great actor in a role that he knows the context to a T.

Ben Mendelsohn and Joel Edgerton were great in this movie, as was Jackie Weaver. The kid (James Frecheville) was good too, although his role wasn't demanding, just a few grunts here and there. But, the little acting he did have to do was pretty good. Ben Mendelsohn creeps you out in this film. He's supposedly not a great bloke in real life and was apparently a turd on set for this movie - it comes through in the movie.
@Ca11umism Completely agree. Think it's down to the whole 'who you know' thing etc. The social network for example was directed by David Fincher (a great director IMO) but the film was shit. It got so much distribution and marketing because of the Hollywood connections. Whereas Animal Kingdom was an independent film, and Aussie independent film at that (not a great deal are known worldwide) and was David Michod's debut directing... with no Hollywood connections of any kind, it couldn't compete..

@Ca11umism: The average idiot wouldn't enjoy the Animal Kingdom: no CGI, no explosions, gun shots are subtle, no celebrity actors either. Unfortunately, that's the way the world works: it's a pity but great movies like this are not for the average bogan, or suburban family, and are definitely not for the American market: most yanks wouldn't understand half the dialogue or any of the nuances.
Lots of respect though to those Americans who did enjoy it and rate it at Sundance.

its not americans who want this cgi 3d movie culture..especially not th young people...its the corporate culture that think that sells..and the millenial generation is interested in the rest of the world..its the american baby boomers who think the world revolves around them...they grew up when america was in a high as a super power after wwii...the young millenials grew up in diversity with technology, anime, harry potter etc etc and other foreign shit being aimed at them
