There was a time in the 1990s and early 2000s when Ben had pretty much given up on acting. He liked to party and have a good time. Occasionally you would see him in a pub somewhere in Sydney having a drink and a laugh. Just a regular guy.
But full credit to him. He got his acting career back on track and thank Zeus that he did! He is so good at it. I love watching him act in just about anything.

Made me think of Robert Downey Jr. Who’d believe that he was once considered a hopeless addict who’d be lucky to be alive in a year? Then he came back and was brilliant.
Ben Mendelsohn is a highly skilled character actor. He was very effectively terrifying in this film.
When I was a kid Ben was in quite fluffy Australian TV shows for kids. He was just a kid too. I am so proud to see what a magnificent actorr he has become. I love his work. Absolutely brilliant.
Apparently he and Luke Ford didn't want to rehearse this scene so Luke would go into the scene blind and help show Darren's pure fear of Pope.
Ben Mendelsohn is absolute 10/10 in this movie but it's decisions like this which help make Pope the intimidating figure he is

Ben is a very underrated actor. He has an unusual talent and gift for the art. It’s a shame he never made it big in Hollywood

The "gay drink" dialogue is actually really funny even though Ben Mendelson is scary as hell in this scene. Brilliant acting and one of the best film ever!

I know this sounds kinda weak, but I really liked Son of a Gun. Don't know if I'm alone there, but that Sol Seppy track killed it. I'm a sucker for soundtrack songs like Live to Tell in At Close Range. Now I'm going to go make myself a gay drink. Just want to tell you about it.

Thers is other scene of Pope talking similarly, but that was a dialogue with J. "If there is anything you want to talk about...". Pope is a one of a crazy character. Whole movie is very good.

Agreed. Snowtown is one seriously tense film. Incredible acting, but certainly not for the faint-of-heart.
The Boys is a masterpiece and David Wenham's most terrifying performance. It's hard to find. Keep looking. It's out there somewhere on the internet.
i love that despite the hilarious ass dialogue and even funnier delivery, the context is so horrific that one doesn't even feel like laughing..at least the first time watching it lol

This is one of the most amazing bits of acting I've seen since Day-Lewis. Pope was scary.
Ben is SO DARK and MENICING in this film. Convincing his brother to murder too cops with his "your gay and scared" is such a powerful scene
There is so much to digest in this scene, but the thing I always take away from it is the naturalism of their conversation: the lived-in feeling of the characters, used to each other's pokes and prods. What I think is so elemental about Pope is: he doesn't discriminate based on anything. He is a character of pure id. I think that's what the three brothers represent in their own ways: Pope is id, pure instinct, sometimes savage. Darren is the superego: somehow above everything morally, but still entangled in the web of this criminal family. And Craig is just ego: living in the moment, but running from the past. Each of the characters, Pope especially, would be so hackneyed and done-in if not for the actors in their roles. But Mendelsohn is especially frightening I think because he is the "inner-psycho" of the three: you cannot predict his movements or motives, because they are not always sound. There's a reason the cops wanted Pope most out of the Cody family. There's a weird look of familiarity on Darren's face, but also one of fear. This is Pope trying to get close to him, when Darren knows his history and what he's capable of.

For the entirety of this movie I thought Pope would jump off the screen and beat the living shit out of me. Ben Mendelsohn is a monster actor.

I know I'm replying very late. I don't think the character IS gay, but "Ben" is inferring that he's a pussy/gay/weak/wimp for not doing something in revenge/retaliation.
