Preferring to buy local cars is norm in the world , including Germany. But foreign automakers must outperform the local brands, and attract the local buyers in terms of better price-to-value or more advanced technology or better serving the local needs and wants.

Not in China. Cheese consumers have been preferring German and Japanese cars for decades until very recently Chinese cars got better than foreign brands. Chinese consumers have no patriotism they are pragmatic.

The GDP per capita in China is one fifth (20%) of the GDP/capita in the West, so it is understandable that they will choose a cheaper vehicle. The average cost for an EV in the US last year was $55,000. An economy EV by BYD is priced around $12,000. Also, Chinese auto manufacturers are more innovative and consumer-oriented.

After watching the video, I have to see something from the bottom of my heart as a Chinese. This lady doesn't understand the Chinese auto market at all. Her views are full of Western imperial chauvinism. At the beginning of the video, she laughed contemptuously when she talked about "to make China great again". That is a sign that she looks down on anything happening in China (Asia or Africa ). Young Chinese consumers are becoming more and more realistic and more and more pursuing cost-effectiveness. Chinese domestic brands and Tesla's designs are more attractive to them. Another major reason is that the interior design of German brands is seriously outdated, and even slightly luxurious configurations (digital systems) have to be added to the price. This situation is exactly the same as the evolution of the mobile phone market ten years ago. I hope German manufacturers can learn from this lesson. It is not about government subsidies or country differences. It is about better consumer-friendly design.

"to make China great again" ? ~ "Make America Great Again" (MAGA) is a campaign slogan used by American politicians. It was first used by Ronald Reagan during his 1980 presidential campaign. The term was created in 1979 during a time in which the United States was suffering from a worsening economy at home marked by high unemployment and inflation.~ Look she is so much influenced by America politicians in her thought.

I think these reporters need to understand Chinese consumer psychology. As a Chinese person myself, I used to drive a BMW (it was my dad's) and have a few friends who are pretty into luxurious German cars. The main reason why people buy these cars are exactly because they are luxury - a show for status. Nowadays in China however, a X7 or even a G-Wagon will not necessarily signal status to people. If rich Chinese want to show off, they will buy the latest, coolest BYD or Zeeker. Sorry for my German friends, but these brands are not special anymore, so, unless you innovate and compete, you will be forgotten soon.

And for my latest ride in 2024, I went with an AITO M7-an all-new SUV with smart driving tech and deep R&D from Huawei. Am I just getting patriotic now? Nah, it's all about safety, reliability, brand quality, comfort, and smart features. Back in the day, Chinese cars didn't quite hit the mark for me on these fronts, but now they totally do. I got a setup that's on par with, if not better than, a Mercedes-Benz GLE for half the price of my Q7. Top-notch interior quality and L2+ smart driving features included. German automakers are struggling in China due to their lag in electric vehicle (EV) technology and smart features, falling behind domestic brands like BYD. In 2024, from January to September, China produced and sold over 21 million vehicles, with domestic EVs surging. In September, only two gas-powered German models made the top 10, while Tesla Model Y and four BYD models dominated. The rise of innovative, affordable Chinese cars highlights the challenges German brands now face in this market.
