Life too short for long UA-cam videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
In this episode Dan reflects on his recent reconnection with his vintage Vox AC30, following some gig and recording preparation with his band Tin Spirits.
Dan is using the AC30 connected to a Fryette Power Station to provide some attenuation, which helps put the amp in a sweet spot in terms of tone, dynamics and feel… but without excessive volume.
Using that as the base tone, we go through his current selection of boosts, OD and fuzz to get all kinds of drive textures, throwing in some modulation and ambience for good measure.
Dan is using the AC30 in its (modded) EF86 channel.

It's me, the Matt Jantzen from Durham who ordered the All You Need is Fuzz t-shirt at 5:50 in the episode. Tomorrow I graduate with my doctorate after working on it for 6 years, but that pales in comparison to hearing my name spoken on an episode of That Pedal Show. My three year-old son and I watch TPS every single week. Some of the first names he ever learned to say were "Mick and Dan." Thanks for all you guys do!
Matt! Thank you so much for buying a shirt and MASSIVE congrats on the doctorate! When we do the kids’ shirts your boy will have a couple with our sincere compliments! Nice one Matt, thanks again!
Matt Jantzen I sorta know the feeling. A couple weeks ago they featured the dope priest in the P90 video because I asked about it a couple times in the comments. I called all my gear nerd friends and couldn’t stop smiling all day.
Thanks guys, you're the best!
Too cool Matt!
Lol crazy story if true
Exactly one hour long. This pleases me
James Hodgson it pleases me immensely as well
James Hodgson And me!
right on the nose! ohhh baby. ahhhahahaha.
I bet our sock drawers look very different.
Immediately picturing your pedalboard cable routing...
So, not only are you guys extremely accomplished musicologists, you are also time travelers! Recording on Friday night and posting on Friday afternoon. Oooooooo (X-Files theme).
Been waiting for this episode for a long time! I play an ac30 and you’re completely right, in a band mix it just cannot be beaten, keep up the good work guys
One of the best shows ever. Full of example and context. Brilliant. And you looked like you were really having fun with the 'Late Late Show'. Looking forward to the first show from the new place.
browsing through older videos.. Dan's sound at 18:58 is just amazing. Rich, full, breaking up nicely. It's pure magic.
Dan's clean playing on that butterscotch tele around 44:00 was just magical. You can always tell when you two are really feeling a particular sound!
Ah, cheers mate. It’s my happy place :)
Hey guys, I've been watching this show almost every week since basically the beginning, back on the old channel, and I want to say that I love the direction the show is going. The quality of production and spread of topics always keeps it interesting, and your excitement about good sounds is always contagious. You guys have taught me so much. Thanks for keeping it going, I'm excited for the new space!
LOL poor Dan. So emotional and excited he couldn’t even finish a sentence for the first 11 minutes of the vid! I was chuckling at how hard he was trying to express his thought and not getting anywhere. Love the vids guys, and your passion and joy.
You guys continue to make this show better and better and move it into exciting new directions!! Love the Podcasts. Can't wait to see how this whole year unfolds. Thanks as always.
An oldie but such a goodie. Having just got an AC30 this helped me get to a killer sound in no time and picked the right pedals straight away too. Thanks chaps!
The AC30 is pure magic.
I have my own theory why it doesn't work for some: when I first played through mine I had been playing for about 13 years or so, and suddenly it was as though I was playing for the first time. I was noticing so many playing habits and techniques that just did not translate into how the AC30 sounds, and my playing sounded sloppy and garbage. There's a transparency to it that really emphasizes the individuality of your gear and playing (good and bad), and it takes a lot of time and dedication to learn how to play with it's strengths so it will play to yours. It's not an amplifier where you dial in the sound you want; it dials the sound from you. I could see how that process would not work for a lot of people, but for me it is inspiring and there's nothing I love playing through more.
That’s very well put. I think it’s true of all amps. Mick here.
Man, I'm so looking forward to TPS in a band context, a whole world of learning possibilities there for me. Awesome idea.
Did this ever happen??
Im so pumped that you guys are doing the band thing to put some of your comments in context. So many musicians I meet dont know how to mix their amp for a band situation. They dial in a fat, monstrous tone at home but as soon as they play with the band, their sound gets lost in the mix. I Love what you are doing! Keep it up.
Just watched this basically straight after the no amps episode... faith restored, its like my ears breathed a sigh of relief... Those clean tones around the 40ish min mark with the fuzz face and guitar rolled back, and then the 335 and the tele with the mudhoney... gave me “ear joy” thanks lads!
That tele, and that vox is just friggin EPIC. Honestly Dan I get just as emotional as you mate! What an absolutely inspiring sound. Writing this at 18 mins in to the video. This is my favorite show guys keep it up!
Thank you Jay! What a difference from last week, eh? It’s all about tickling the inspiration bone. Cheers!
How did you manage to connect the Fryette Power Station to the vintage vox ac 30 ?
Quite honestly my favorite video from you guys yet! I've been following you guys since you were posting on TheGigRig and something about this episode is just freakin' magical!
The bang on one hour run time does my OCD a world of good. Great stuff, as usual, guys. I love AC30s...
Some of the best tones i’ve ever heard. Want an AC 30 now
MAGNIFICENTLY BRILLIANT show guys reconfirming just why the AC30 is inextricably linked to rock and roll! 🤘
Dan and Mick your humour, humility and passion for music is fantastic.Let music get away from me for a while.I discovered your show and took a little Marshall dsl40c amp I got from a friend, made some changes, applied the concepts you speak of and shazam !Sounds incredible and inspiring. Thanks for helping to awake my spirit again.
Ah, that’s great! Cheers T :)
ac30 w blues. top boost channel. treble at 1/3- bass at 2/3. any guitar. absolutely rules the world.
I swear Dan, that little section of playing at about 44 mins was about the best I've ever heard you play. Just sublime touch and feel mate, really quite quite beautiful.
I just got my D&M Drive pedal yesterday! The pedal is awesome and sound great through my Vox ac15c1. I have my KOT and D&M drive on my pedal board now and will remain forever! Thanks Mr. Keeley, Dan and Mick! Getting more shirts soon and will sport them at up coming gigs!
Speechless 😶
All incredible sounds!!!
I would love to see hou guys jam together on the different incredible sounds you guys consistently produce!!
So happy to see more PowerStation love. For me is the best gear I ever bought, so useful and versatile!!! Keep rocking guys!
Maybe your best show ever. I actually got teary eyed. 😂 I am a huge fan of moving air with an amp. Mick pretty much was in an altered state with the mud-honey and the 335. Dan, for the open space you have to put in the Roxanne. Your love for the mistress made me buy one from Poland. Got shipped last Monday. Can’t wait til it arrives. I happened upon “Ghost in the Machine” today on vinyl. Boom goes the dynamite!
This episode defiantly warrants a recap when you guys get the band thing together. All your points will really come across very clearly and I think will be quite an eye (and ear) opener for a lot viewers
Ive watched every show since the beginning (on the gig rig channel) but it's been quite a while since I've commented. That said, I have to chime in here... these tones and subsequent inspired playing from you both this episode were simply fantastic. Most appreciated and informative as always. Thank you. Dig it.
Great show! Tele and VOX combo is my happy place so this was epic! Great job as always! And... your neighbor must be a complete tool! If I heard that magic all day... dang would be awesome!!!
You guys crack me up. I love how much you two love guitar and the way you express yourselves. So English.😂 I recently purchased an AC15 C1 and a Soul Food after watching a series of your videos and am totally in love with guitar again. Thanks guys and keep up the awesome work.
Ace intro, Dan. Lovely. Great episode. I just needed something awesome and musical to overcome my bad mood, and this was just the thing! Thanks!
Yeah baby!
Amazing show, such phenomenal tones with insane chemistry between you two. I look forward to seeing what comes next guys. I'm inspired and blown away by this and get goose bumps from every note played. Form Tele to strat, single coil to humbucking Gibson's this episode really pleases the soul! Keep up the magic
Thank you Kyle! Not everybody gets it but we’re glad you do. You are why we make the show - thank you!
Really good show. I had made up a Matchless DC30 clone and struggled a bit getting my pedal board to sound good with it. Once I put an attenuator on the amp and dialled in the sweet spot the whole character of the sound changed for the better and it made the amp take pedals like a dream. Could not stop playing with it! Cheers guys
Can't wait to see the videos from your new place , so excited for you
I will start listening to the podcasts at school will make life so much easier when doing homework being able to listen to you guys talk about pedals and other guitar stuff😀
Listened to half of this on the way to work this morning and the other half just now heading home.......guys your playing was so inspiring today cheers to you two AND Simon.
The nice plus is I also have an AC30 plus an Analogman sunface !!!
Thank you guys for the amazing video!
I have a VOX AC30 inspired amp - Tophat King Royale.
I think your pedalboard sounded absolutely incredible... Time to get rejigging on my pedalboard I think!
Maybe it’s just me but the shows you’ve done in the evening due to the neighbors have been tremendous! This show is spectacular. Can’t wait to see the band!!
I went to a great show last night ( Basement, Citizen, Pronoun, and Souvenirs ) and saw Basement played through a couple of Hiwatts; awesome! Then your AC30 (killer tones) so amps that might be fun to put in a band context show? Can't wait to see shows based on the band idea! Great show guys, and good luck with the new digs.
I'm very pleased about the podcast medium as I often just listen when I'm doing my house chores.
Great show today guys, Loved it! As well as the P-90's show. I recently bought a gibson classic, with P-90's, and it was nice hearing all those articulate beautiful tones you both were getting. Now with the AC30, which I also have and play a hardwired AC30, it sounded amazing and taught me a lot about my amp and pedals and how I should be using them and what I shouldn't do, which I do lol. Thanks guys, keep up the great work!
Nice one Thomas - glad you enjoyed it!
Man, what a great episode! Both in tone and feel. I smiled a lot this hour!
I go back to this episode whenever I get discouraged about my vox. Then I remember the sound and fall in love all over again. And remember I never really want any other amp.
when i first started playing guitar i bought this cheap multi-effects pedal from korg that had a couple amp emulations on it.. id be on AC10 or AC30 non-stop. Years later i started playing more electric gigs and it was a no-brainer.. went with the AC10 and i couldnt be happier. Something about Vox's sound is just MONEY to my ears. Love this video guys! gave me some ideas for pedals and settings for some more cool tones.
awesome episode, The tones are fabulous 😄 - this is why I still schlep around my AC30!
Great video fellas! It has taken me many years to learn this simple lesson: The pre-amp has to push the input of the power amp sufficiently to achieve the sweet spot regardless of how much gain you use. This allows both sections to work together in an organic way with just the right amount of sustain and compression. Too much input from the pre-amp (or pedal) and the sound will get squishy, the treble harsh and the low end will get muddy/flubby. This is why I have amps with both pre-amp gain and pre-amp volume (don't confuse these 2) then you can push the frontend of the power section just enough to get the range of dynamics you need. After setting this up the next stage is the master volume which will provide an additional level of saturation from the power section (only if pushed to loud levels) which can be attenuated by a soak. I personally don't like soaks so I have amps I can change the wattage with.
Red into the AC30 shines! Two things I never got, teles and Vox amps, completely blowing me away! Thanks for that!
yes!!! Love my ac30 and always wondered when a video comes out from you...also my D&M Drive suits the amp very nice :)
This reminded me very much of the Mick's Board Build episode. The tones clearly just hit in such a way as to inspire because of how personalized the sound is. Brilliant racket today.
Cheers Sam. We seem to sound better when the inspiration is truly there. Well there’s a surprise!
This is my favorite style of episode. The ones where you demonstrate your own gear or interview other players who walk through their own rigs are always something special. Demonstrating different pedals and digging into technical stuff is awesome, but episodes like this are where stuff gets real. Maybe a Mick rig run through soon?
Cool, cheers Steve. Mick here. Certainly when there’s a bit more personal relevance (whether it’s us or artists) the videos seem to connect a little better. Hopefully our new space will enable us to grow further down that path. Thanks as always for watching and commenting!
So hyped for what's to come! You've already taught me a lot about my own tone and tone in general. I found my Vox Bruno TB18C1 sort of by accident when I set out to find an AC15 but it's the best thing that could've happened. It made me dive into pedals more as well as learn how an amp should sit in a (recorded) mix. You already made me go out and get a King of Tone and I"m now toying with the idea of a Broadcast. And it's not gonna be the last thing either, I'm afraid.
Nice nice nice. I remember liking the Bruno Voxes a lot. Mick here. Happy tones!
spectacular sound. Honestly I could listen all day and night.
CONDOR!!!! I use the same harmonic tremolo-esque setting on mine (and as an EQ’d boost, and a soupy univibe-type thing if you ramp the bass too). Haven’t tried an expression pedal yet... It’s so good!
Podcast! What a fantastic idea! I’ve been waiting for it!!!
off the back of an episode you guys did a few months ago, i bought myself an ac15 greenback and a strat. it's maybe a 5th the price of my other amp, and barely half of what even my fairly small pedalboard costs. but god, that is my favourite amp in the world. I have never wanted to play guitar as much as i do now. Thank you for what you do, from the people who just want to chill and listen to bloody amazing guitar sounds and funny blokes for an hour. Keep on slapping your knees, drinking wine out of teacups and playing the crap out of those guitars!
Awesome awesome awesome Brad, thanks so much for that. It makes us happy that you’re happy. That’s the goal!
8:18 has the ten seconds that makes this video amazing just watching them alone. The other parts are great too, but that tone gently tears the air with smooth electric waves.
The Mudhoney sounds killer! Reminds me of a treble booster into OD type sound.
Wow, the Condor! It's cool how you can absolutely hear the midrange tremolo while the highs and lows ring out steady. Gorgeous. Great for recording I would think.
It’s so cool. And does waaaay besides. Kinda blew my mind. Mick here. :9)
Yeeeeeep! I get that same sweet spot with a much less powerful amp with vox type mods. When you are there, every gain pedal sounds good. Even my metal pedals. It still has the attack and crunch while it grinds. It's a thing of beauty.
That D&M Drive on the tele. That is it right there. Perfect, no need to tweak it at all. Great show.
when Mick hit that Touch Drive on the 335 I had the biggest grin on my face because I was thinking exactly what he was feeling. Brilliant show! I hope this means there's one for Mick coming up with his amp!!!
Great fun as always. Interesting to watch you both as your tastes may evolve over time. And cant wait to see how opinions might change within a band context. I might have to check out a bad bob again and put if after sunface>beano>badbob>prince of tone.
Ef86 FTW. I got my ac15 heritage handwired for the ef86 channel. Awesome sounds this episode
You guys get better and better. Made me laugh along a few times. "The honk...", "The honk...". Brilliant.
Thanks so much, gents, excellent show. You are the highlight of my week.
I have two requests, from things you've mentioned of late:
-The Hudson Broadcast came up again today. I got one recently based having discovered it in your show about different overdrives about a year ago (a long quest.) I’d love to see you dig into it, also fuzz and other pedals with good dynamic response, with tips about the techniques to get the most out of that quality.
-A few episodes ago you had a new Princeton, and said we'd see more of it. (Please?)
A show on the sweet spots in that and other Blackface amps done in a similar way to how you just brilliantly got the best of the AC30 would be great.
Dan you've inspired me to get a Vox style amp, and I've been enjoying it since I got it a couple of weeks ago. So thanks for that haha
Mick you're making me want a Two Rock next
Thanks guys, stellar video as per usual.
25:30 ! Wow is right! That has to be the coolest thing I'm gonna hear today.
The best thing I ever put in front of my vox was a tumnus, and still is! Tumnus gain down to 9 oclock and used in the same was as the bad bob with the amp set to where it's most dynamic. Between the volume on the guitar and the tumnus you have a world of range and it all sounds like your guitar and your amp - not like you just plugged into a new rig when you give it gas.
The AC30 is my favorite amp, I swear everything I've ever put into it sounds great. And it's not just amazing for guitar, it's also spectacular for e-piano tones. It also pairs great with other amps. Anyone who doesn't like the AC30 is just wrong.
This show just gets better all the time. Good luck with the move!
Sounding glorious best episode ever!!
my, oh my. the difference this week to last week's direct show is just insane!
I wanted Dan to play the gretsch so bad at the end!!!! The AC30 with the filtertrons I bet sound so freaking good!
Regardless, the tone was top notch! Bravo!
Gents - just a quick note to let you know that this episode helped me immensely. I had band practice last night and after watching this video last week I feel like I finally got my AC30 tones dialed in so much better in the band mix, plus I could hear myself without being too pokey or thin, plus I had so much more control over my tone and timbre from my guitar volume/tone/pickup combinations. Even my band-mates commented on the great tones as well. Plus I feel like my amp responded better to my pedals like never before as well. You really helped me to find that 'sweet spot' that opens these amps up and makes 'em so special! Thanks for making these videos, and I'm so glad you did one on the AC30. Keep up the great work! Cheers. -Tim in Minneapolis, MN, USA
Ah, that’s awesome Tim! Yep, the AC30 is one of those amps that due to its limited eq options takes a little push to get dialled in right. Great stuff mate
Many thanks for the reply! (and by the way, I LOVE how you reply to many of the comments on your videos, it really helps us as fans and fellow musicians connect with you guys...it takes LOADS of time and effort - but just know it's really worth it!!!) thanks for all you do. Cheers.
Did you use an attenuator too Tim?
WHAT? I CAN'T HEAR YOU. 😂 No, my band plays pretty loud rock music (and we are lucky to practice in a big space) so I'm able to 'open up' my AC30 enough to where I can find that sweet spot of clarity and crunch, all while it can respond well to my pedals and guitar tone/vol. At home, it's trickier (I don't own an attenuator), but I've got a master volume on my amp so I can dial in my preamp to try to find that sweet spot I found in the band, and then keep the master low. On evenings when my wife is out of town I might push that master up a bit as much as my ears can handle in my home studio. It certainly isn't as good as when you can open it up in the band, but it IS an AC30, haha. Good luck!
This is one of my favorite episodes. I watch it over and over again. The sounds you too get with this setup are inspiring. I finally took time to learn the piece Mick plays on Blue (42:45) and Daniel plays on Red (43:55) when you dispelled that myth about fuzzes and Vox’s. I was wondering if those were originals or if those are parts of other artist’s songs.
My follow up question is if you’d recommend some artists, songs, or albums that have that same feel and texture. Thanks, boys! Love your show!
Replacing the greenback in my AC15 with a proper alnico blue changed my world!
Love Dans face in this vid, when those tones come through! Pure geetar joy going on there :)
And that is the way a Vox sounds, hehe in case anyone was wondering... show the new place!!!! love ya guys, big fan of your show and a Vox Tele fan as well.
I know exactly what point Dan is referring to, when I first started to play guitar I was always kind of scared of that, because I felt it was too loud (back then). Nowadays, I turn my amp all the way up and I still can't hear it over my brother's drumset! But yeah, when I play I always try to get at least to that point if I can, that's where everything nice starts to happen.
I think this has been my favourite episode of TPS so far. With some of the others, I rather feel like I don't really understand some of the things you talk about, myself being not really experienced with many amps, or many guitars, or many pedals. But this episode, I really can relate to that point were everything just makes sense. That point that I know is the reason the bands I like sound the way they do. Awesome sounds all around!
Really excited to hear you might be thinking of a Rat show. The Rat is by far my favorite pedal, and I would love to hear you guys playing different variations of Rats and other pedals that do the Rat "thing". Sounds like a lot of fun.
Best alarm clock ever!!! My notification of "That Pedal Show" is already uploaded.
Always love Vox tones. I've played many gigs with my old AC15 with the Celestion Blue in it cranked all the way up. Nothing like that tone.
If you haven't had it on the show yet you should DEFINITELY check out the Blackstone Appliances Mosfet Overdrive. Very unique and sounds excellent.
Also, being from Michigan in the US I'd love to see more Lovepedal stuff too.
You guys ROCK! I may need to pick up a sunface...
Really, the best shows in a long time!
That was superb. Thanks as always, lads.
Jesus christ, that rhythm tone at 47:20 . I'm a happy camper now. Thanks Dan and Mick. 😁
Great show guys! Can't wait to see the new space when its up
Us too. It’s a bit daunting and we have man work to do. But Dan’s a man, so we should be okay.
I am really excited to see you guys jamming as a band. I would love to see some of your challenge boards in the band context. The huge board vs the mini board or the golf green board vs Dan’s cheap board.
Love the Making plans for Nigel quote ,what an amazing song and off beat guitar hook ,could you look at John Mcgeoch gear and sounds his set up is still a mystery for the most part , but the sounds he created really sound brilliant in a whole band format.cheers n
This might be the only guitar show where it's obvious what you really think about the gear.
Yes this is the reason you guys are the best.. and the andertons channel
Being a church guy my British AC30(Korg era) lives in an amp room and we use in-ears on stage. But today I pulled it out and recorded for a country gig and had the exact same experience. When that thing hits the sweet spot it's just magic. I forgot how good of a sound that sound was.
Nice!! I think that making a video with a five essnetials pedals for each one would be great to see. Like the 350 pounds pedalboard video you made but without price limit, justo your favorite 5 pedals to set a complete pedalboard. Cheers!!
We’ll do that - great idea!
I'm watching this for the 10th time. I'm just in love with that tele through that ac30!
Dan here, I’ve been going back to the AC30 a lot lately, such a special amp
@@ThatPedalShow Just bought an Ac30 after watching this video, you're such an inspiration Dan. Love the passion you and Mick have for the guitar.
Great show!!! Thanks guys!
With tones like these, who needs an effects loop?
Thanks for reaffirming my love for Voxes!
I sometimes turn on TPS just to ogle Dan's Telecaster, that is one astonishing and beautiful machine, and best of all he shares its tones freely with us
Great show as usual guys. Always interesting to get an insight into what gear people with experience of/access to vast arrays of options actually choose to use.
Looking forward to a Rat episode!
Sweet set up, I never thought that many pedals would fit on a Schmidt Array 600, very cool!
I've got that exact Mudhoney and man that thing is glorious. I've also got the T Rex Quint Machine and it's also an absolute beast of a pedal and they both sound awesome with my AC30.
Just listened to some Tin Spirits, Dan's got a decent Geddy impression!
