Honestly, to my gay ass, it feels like such a nice little sign of how much we've progressed as a society. When I was a teenage guy, for example, you wouldn't have been caught dead having sincere, unironic positive feelings about a romance between two men. Everyone would have given you the side eye and given you shit about it from then on.

Well you find a letter and Frank's dead body and the letter pretty much saying how he hates Bill's ways and that he is stubborn and ended up hating his guts... @@subculturenz I think a great perspective though is how for the videogame that worked. A lot of that section was propped up by a change in gameplay and the character/storytelling was done by those notes.
For the show, you obviously can't prop this section up with a "gameplay" change but instead they decided to dive deeper into Bill and Frank's lives and made that change. I think this episode will be a prime example of not only how to do an adaptation (what to change and expand upon) but also show that you can make meaningful changes that adds upon the story and the game's source material.

I have watched SO many reactions to this episode and it's actually the only episode I have seen.
( I know! I know! I will have to catch up). I'm an early 50s gay guy married to my husband 8 years and together for 22 years in April. As a gay child (ten to 20 years old in the 80s) suffice it to say living in the Midwest the struggle was real.
Makes it very hard even today to trust a number of things and some people. I don't dislike straight men just because. I am still wary of them though.
My point is, watching these reactions with what is often younger str8 people , how to say this... has given me I guess hope for the future. I did see things changing over the years. I got married 8 years ago, of course I saw it, but watching this episode's reactions and so many young people and in particular the str8 guys... show emotion. Not react even a little to the two dudes thing. The crying. I mean. The crying. Just incredible to see. It's just a thing people around my age would sometimes be surprised at. You focus on the story elements and not the gay thing...an entire episode of the gay thing...didn't even bat an eye.
Without even knowing you are doing it, you need to know this really matters to a lot of people who have been through a lot of shit.

I love how Joel explained how the infection spread so quickly but then you realize how narrowly he, Sara and Tommy avoided being infected.
Joel is on an Atkins diet, which restricts carbs like flour.
The pancake mix ran out so they ate eggs instead of flour based pancakes.
Sarah didn't eat the neighbor's cookies because it was raisin cookies instead of chocolate chip.
Joel forgot to bring a birthday cake. Four times where they narrowly missed getting infected by tainted flour.
And, thinking back about it, who turned first? The neighbor's grandma. Whom was introduced being force-fed biscuits.

If a pandemic like this happens where the world starts sprouting zombies, you and I are gonna shack up cause you know how to live in the woods. I need someone who can take care of me." His wife chimed in, "Not if I get to him first. You don't even mow the lawn. He's gonna feed you to the zombies in a week's time babe. I'm better off with him."

I never played the game, i know basically nothing about it, so i can't really compare it to the source material.
But I really hope we continue to get episodes like this. Taking a complete break from the main plot and just hitting us with this wonderful love story out of nowhere.
That we keep getting these snapshots of the postapocalyptic lives of the people that help Joel and Ellie on their way. Because it's so fucking beautiful. It's painting us this tapestry of interconnected lives, this amazing picture of the human experience in this broken world. This is exactly the point, the way we affect each other, the imprint left on people's lives when we're gone.
    It's perfect.

I haven't played the game either, but I hope for almost the opposite. I feel like the magic of the episode is somewhat diminished if we get much more of this type of stuff. I would personally much prefer if this kind of story is a one-off thing that took us by surprise since the main narrative is already gripping enough.

    @Nani no Anime,
1:16 I don't think that was by choice. Tess was already suffering from pretty bad muscle spasms, a sign that the cordyceps inside of her were already fast at working building a barrier around her brain, shutting her out of her body permanently, forever. We saw her lack of coordination and control when she flicked her lighter--it wasn't the lighter, but her. She was fading fast and she used everything she had left in her to start that fire.
The Stalker that was walking up to her, didn't charge at her? It knew that she was already one of them, like all the other infected that ran past her. Tess didn't run or move because she couldn't. How did the infected know that she was one of them? I assume they knew in the same way the Adler's dog Mercy did. That Stalker was drawn to Tess, and she was drawn to it. She couldn't do anything because the Cordyceps in her wanted that connection with the hivemind. Tess already knew she was gone, and she used the her final moments to finally set that fire.
1:46 this is that connection the cordyceps crave, their mycelial connection, they spreading and staying connected--love this opening sequence.
2:23 Well, we've had a very long history of horrible game to movie/tv transitions. This series could start dishing out stinkers, and it'd still be miles ahead of everything that came before, lol Double Dragon, Super Mario Bros., Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Dead or Alive, Resident Evil, Tomb Raider, and Uncharted all fell short, though some fell much shorter than others. The Last of Us, unlike everything before, it is sticking to the core of its story and is actually working in key moments of that story. Brining in Neil Druckmann and a good cast and team to work with was the cherry on top!
    2:39 Apparently, Alberta, Canada.
4:25 I don't think that's the issue in this new apocalyptic world with infected, fascist government, raiders, slavers, cultist, cruel people etc. making up the last of humanity.
8:07 Everyone is doing a great job at their role, but I agree Bella is an outstanding Ellie! People complaining were never going to be happy with who was cast, so I'd ignore those folks.
14:41 mere seconds away from getting an explanation...but, take our own pandemic into account. Do you remember the Grand Princes cruise ship in California? We first had 21 people testing positive, and then that number shot up really quick and before you knew it was popping up all over the US. That was a virus! Cordyceps want to spread, and with their new found bodies, they're attacking humans every chance they get an inseminating them with their own--rinse wash, repeat.
17:30 Yup! Just a few seconds from getting the answer to your question, lol. This series has been answering questions we've all been asking--it's knows we're going to ask them, and they've always provided an answer. Sometimes you just got to let the characters tell you =]
19:03 Yeah, because that's his birthday! He's never going to forget this day...his daughter died the next day, remember ='(
45:23 Bill's just surviving, and Frank wants him to live. Bill's been hiding in a world that didn't accept him, so he never knew what living was, not until Frank. This was a really, great story.
53:12 16 years. They've been living their best lives during the apocalypse. No judgement, just love and living, and they actually had friends and did some trading too. They got to grow old together, while other families very likely died horrible, sad deaths ='( Bill made a sanctuary far better, safer and sustainable than the QZ staffed by hundreds of soldiers! Wow!
53:54 Look a Bill. He didn't give a damn about his lawn or the flowers when this started, but he does now. He's learned to live, and he's loving it! What's the point of surviving, if you aren't going to live? That's what Frank was trying to tell him during their first fight...at least that's how I saw it anyway. Frank didn't want to live in a bunker for the rest of his days and he certainly didn't want that for Bill either.
54:12 Craig Mazin said that they didn't want to name Frank's decease in the story, but after folks online went while he decided to respond. He said that they didn't actually decide on an illness, but said that Frank either suffers from MS or ASL...both are f'ing bad.
This was an excellent episode, great story.

In the game Bill was a miserable lonesome son of a bitch because he was alone and that was due to his nature of shutting everyone out, and in the game it was representation of who Joel would become if he continued to be shut everyone out and be alone. In the show he's the opposite. He's happy and satisfied and it's showing Joel to do the same more or less if he also finds "his person to protect and love". representing a version that Joel could become.
