That's the same theory I heard. Makes sense though. Like in Incredibles when Mr. Incredible found it hard working a desk job. Superman chose to be a reporter since he can keep updated faster on current events and didn't have to wait for something to be posted. Plus they get special excess to stuff not known to the public. He doesn't want higher positions because they don't actually go out and get the info and just wait for it to come to them. Better to be there in person and stop it then wait for someone to drive to the office and tell you what happened.

One of the details I really like about the relationship between Metroman is the implication that while he started out genuinely disliking Megaman, as he matured he began to let his "rival" share the limelight each time they clashed. You can practically see his off-screen character growth, right up to the point where he eventually realized that all the pretending wasn't healthy or sustainable. Every one of their altercations would've been so effortless and un-engaging for him, but he could tell just how hard Megamind worked to set things up, so more then just play along he actively encouraged the guy with banter and narrow escapes.
By the time the film starts, he's gone from rich schoolyard bully to unspoken friend. Just because you start off as a smug asshole doesn't mean you have to stay one.

Here’s the best way to look at Megamind, Metro Man and their effect on the world around them. They aren’t heroes OR villains. They are taking part in a school play and were assigned their roles. And they took both roles into being professional actors. It’s ALWAYS about the show, the presentation. Megamind’s methods never hurt anyone. It’s clear from how Roxanne treats his early threats. He wanted her to play her part, but like a show, it just LOOKS like she’s in danger. It’s all property damage, trolling…terrorism. But no one dies in this method. (You can’t possibly tell me he pronounces all those words wrong genuinely, and he just enjoys ticking people off by trolling them. He may be ostracized at school, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t hear people say these words.)
He realizes he wants the other role, but he’s ASSIGNED his role, he can’t be another role unless he’s someone else. So he plays the director. And he made the WRONG cast choice but was too proud to choose someone else. He wants to escape not the show, but the tropes. He acts slightly entitled for Roxanne, but he is more saying I’m not ALLOWED to have these things because I’m the bad guy. You won’t LET me change.
Metro Man straight up didn’t want this show anymore. He wanted another show. And one HE has to earn. Hence why he chose music. No physical training he always has done, no super power helping him do it, he has to actively learn how to play. And currently he’s awful and has to learn. Which is what he wants.
Minion is more the backstage manager handling the costumes and helping the theatrics hit the perfect adrenaline. (Intentionally making those RIDICULOUS warm up times.) And when Megamind says he doesn’t want the role, Minion basically is saying the show may as well be canceled. Which it more or less was since all the cracks of the show WITHOUT Minion fell apart.
Hal, was never in the show. He’s the camera guy. He WATCHES the show. He never played the role. He could only take what he assumed happened from watching. Metro Man got Roxanne because he saved her. Metro Man would never have died if he just put down Megamind. (There are MILLIONS of viewers that say that the hero should just kill the villain.) Not only was that untrue, but Hal never even fit in the roles in the first place. And showed exactly why someone LIKE Hal can’t have those powers. Because it’s not the power, it’s their control. And he has NONE. Because he never caught on this was a performance. He could act as he pleased because he wasn’t a character in the show.
Roxanne realized as time went on how these guys saw their role and she decided to snap these people out with REALITY and not playing into their show. And it just kept getting her stuck in various versions until Hal was powerless, and she understood Megamind really was just as human as the rest of them.

A theory on why Megamind was just kept in prison since infancy: his own safety. If the prison gave him up, the government wold be the first to snatch up the alien life form that couldn't yet advocate for itself and disappear it into some underground lab forever. The warden and any other prison official who watched over him from the beginning probably realized that and did the best thing they could in the situation. As long as Megamind was under the prison's jurisdiction, the government couldn't touch him.

You really shouldn’t be so down on Superman. There’s a lot of poorly written Superman, but there’s also a lot of really good Superman stories. The best stories will never revolve around whether Superman can beat a villain, because if that’s the question, the answer is yes. The best stories revolve around whether he can save someone. For example there is a great section of All Star Superman where he has to talk a suicidal girl down from a ledge and does it completely without powers, just comforts her.

Metroman is such a good example of somebody who was made for something but never really wanted it. He did his duty and played the role but it was never actually his choice to make. I love that he saw the same in Megamind. He saw the lost kid who was forced into a role based on societal pressures, and so even though they were enemies, they were really actually friends the whole time. The were comforting each other in the roles they'd been forced to play by making a structure around it that made it easier to play. Until it wasn't

  • @Filimaua13

Solid reaction to a fantastic movie. A brilliant subversion on the superhero genre.
Megamind never was an evil person. He was just a poor rejected soul that was pushed to that role of a "villain" cos he never had any other purpose or place of belonging. But he never was a bad person. Roxanne's line to him in the rain "did you really think I would be with you?" just broke my heart. It reinforces his insecurities. Why he was a villain in the first place. Cos he has nowhere else to belong, no one would accept him. That line from Roxanne brought him back to that harsh reality, after enjoying the dream as Bernard. His act as Bernard is who he truly was underneath the villain act. An intelligent softspoken person who wanted nothing but a connection with people.
I love the growth from both him and Metroman. With Metroman, he always seemed like that dude that was a showoff prick as an immature kid... but with maturity, he actually turns out to be a decent dude. His rivalry with Megamind later on after the childhood years always looked liked a constant gag you pull with a friend. Even if Megamind never got that vibe, they really were friends in the end. Metroman knew Megamind never was a bad guy either, which was why he was so proud to see him be the hero accepted by all.
Hal (or Tighten lol), is the definition of the Nice guy. The man legit thought just being nice or the "hero" gave him the right to get the girl. Just shows he never saw Roxanne as a person with her own feelings and desires, but as a conquest that he was entitled to. Just cos he was Nice.
As a kid I never saw the red flags from him. Even from way back in the very beginning of the movie. I just saw him as a goofy chill dude and comic relief. But seeing the movie now as an adult, yeeah no wonder Roxanne never gave him a chance. She definitely felt those vibes coming from him. Even with Megamind who was chucking buzzsaws and shark tanks at her, she felt more safe and comfortable to be herself. I never got the sense she felt comfortable being with him, much less alone.

Especially in the animated Justice League show, his character is awesome. He's a perfect balance of ultra-powerful, and country boy (or "boyscout", as Batman calls him), and is all around charming.
His foil with Batman especially helps his character shine through, both of them having the same morals but different methods, and a fun brotherly relationship where their opposing personalities bounce off each other.
The Christmas episode of that show is one of my favorites, showing Clark's insistence in believing in Santa (granted, he's real in the DC universe), and the fact that his parents wrap his presents in lead so he can't peek.

Obviously seeing Megamind risk his life to fix his mistake, stop Tighten, and save the city, were what probably confirmed she fell for the right guy but I'm pretty sure she was willing to give him a chance before that. Metrocity on the other hand, they never find out Metroman didn't die yet they all accepted Megamind cuz he saved them... they just forgot about Metroman or didn't care that their current hero had previously killed a hero huh

Parodies or edgy stuff with 'Evil' superman are just boring and completely miss the point of the character (most of the time, with metro man being among the few good parodies). I just really wish people would stop thinking superman is boring when hes great. Hes chill, likeable, down to earth and a kind soul, which stuff outside of animated films and comics very rarely get right. But still as always really liked the vid

The point is that an all powerful man who can choose to do or be anything chooses to be kind. He gets basically no character growth, because he's a paragon, what everyone is striving to be like. An inspiration to others, both within the story and irl.

I, seriously, love this film. It was such a fantastic subversion of all the typical superhero tropes. One of the things that was great about Megamind, himself, was that he was genuinely intelligent. He thought ahead and planned. He was quick on his feet and could improvise. When Roxanne was hinting he should look back, he got it instantly. And using his dehydration gun to save himself from the fall was beautiful.
If I was to want anything added to this film, it would have been Metroman apologizing to Megamind for making him into a villain. Without his being a bully Megamind would have been an, entirely, different person, and Megaman could have ended their rivalry at anytime by owning up to his past. But, that would be, totally, out of character for Metroman, he is totally self-absorbed and, more than a little, narcissistic.

Something i always love about this movie is that Megamind's actions show that hes not evil, hes never actually doing something because itll cause harm, but because he knows it attracts metro man, and for someone with super intelligence it must be boring to just do everyday things on earth so he needs to create elaborate traps and inventions so he doesnt go crazy. He could have definitely been a good person as a kid, and was a good person, but he realized that 1 noone wanted him to be good and 2 that it didnt matter because doing crime just sent him back to the only home hes had.
