  • Climbing one of the hardest climbs in the world on Cerro Torre isn't always just about the climb, the weather plays a strong part of the Patagonia climbing culture. Could two of the best British climbers even get to see the mountain, let alone climb it?
Back in early 2014, Calum Muskett and Dave MacLeod set out for Patagonia to repeat David Lama's free Compressor Route on Cerro Torre. With pitches up to 8a and bold, committing climbing high on the mountain, it is probably one of the hardest alpine climbs in the world.
But, Patagonia is famous for its foul weather and month-long storms. Would two of Britain's best climbers even get to see the mountain, let alone try one of the hardest, most famous and controversial climbs in the world?

After seing this video (and others), I realize how lucky we were when visiting the area 21 years ago. Cerro Torre had been invisible for 5 weeks but appeared without clouds for only one hour our first morning. The first time Cerro Torre was visible in the 2000's. Most people who were in the area missed the opportunity to see it because the time window was so short. We had only two days in El Chaltén. Two beautiful days. Some people have luck in love, some have it in weather.

We just got back, mountains packed in clouds over days, crazy weather changes, most beautiful hikes... priceless!

The weather is crazy, but it makes it all the more special when you get the good stuff 🤙

This brings me back 25 years. This amazing part of the world, the sunrise colors, that straight dirt road (at the beginning), and these 2 lovely photogenic mountains.

Been a climber for a very long time (malleable steel pitons, steel carabiners, pre-Goldline ropes). Never enjoyed an expedition report more than this one. There are many stories about trips to the mountains, with many different outcomes, but they are all worth telling! Well edited!

1:00 Bolts were NOT drilled by Lama but the guide Markus Pucher, and it was done as part of his trip sponsored by Red Bull. Many of the bolts were drilled next to cracks, which are usually used by climbers for protection on the route.

My perspective on Patagonia climbing: "I'd love to go, it looks Soooo good". Also my perspective on patagonia climbing " F*** that, I will never go and spend that much time for a few days of 'maybe' good weather".
