You have made some of the most practical videos on leather craft that I have seen. You are humble and not afraid to explain the simple stuff for the people who are just getting started. I don't know why you have stopped making content, but I am sure you have a good reason. Just know that more content from you would be a huge contribution to the community (just like your current content).
Tanner, I’ve learned so much from you. You inspired me to try zippers! I’ve gleaned many other gold nuggets from your channel too. You’ve not uploaded any tutorials for a while, so we, your fans, are missing you. I hope all is well with you & your family. Get back to us when you can. We’ll be thrilled to once again see you sharing new ideas and skills with us. Many thanks & God bless!
Very good information. I wanted to make a diode laser cutting machine to cut small series of leather and rubber pieces for small-scale production of footwear and this video is by far the most illustrative about diode leather cutting on UA-cam. Thank you so much
I have been looking for a video for months that will inform me how to cut and record at the same time and you were the only person who did it thank you very much you won a new sub gracias thanks😃
I got one of these a few weeks ago. An air assist helps with the charring on the surface. I just sand the edges down a little to get rid of the roughness. I’ve been told not to use chrometan on it because it makes some toxic fumes
Not sure what you use yours for, but how many patches can this thing churn out? I can't buy a $7k laser right now. I've been getting my hat patches 3rd party. Thanks for your help
Just found your channel, so many awesome new things I learned with just a few videos. I hope all is well and get new videos in the future. I’ll be consuming the archive till then. Thank you.
Man I've been thinking about getting one of these to cut out sheath templates... Glad to see your review here! (wooden blade blank templates would be nice too... )
Really enjoy the videos! I use an atom stack laser and it works great to engrave and cut leather. Just be careful when cutting chrome tan leather or any other leathers that aren’t full grain veg tan as they may have PVC in them which is not good to inhale. Keep up the grind!
Very impressed by the cutting ability. Just a few years back, I wouldn't guess that relatively cheap diode laser will get through fairly thick veg tan so easily. I had a cheaper one 2-3 years ago and I sold it quickly. The improvement in the technology and overall design is incredible. Prolly will wait one or two years for som features additional to be included. But overall great machine. Also, avoid cutting chrome tan...that's a nono for your respiratory system ;).
Tanner, I have enjoyed your videos. Thank you for your time and knowledge. I noticed that it has been a year since your last video. Do you plan to do more?
I've been using laser cutters with leather for quite a while now. The best results I've found are to just trace your lines on top of the leather. Don't bother going through. I individually punch my holes and the punch sits in the trace circle outlines. You could basically hole punch blindfolded. I have not experimented with covering your leather with, tape, or even wood veneer to block the majority of burning that occurs. It's really hard to get the leather back to new condition at that point. And the leather will most likely shrink and warp anyhow. But what's worse is the smell. Adding more oxygen, a blower, and good ventilation may help some.
Very nice! I have an Atomstack x7 pro and just started to practice making a couple leather patches for a couple hats to wear at work. I did however use a transfer making tape to help with “scorching” the leather when engraving (works very well). Thank you for the video.
@@NicholasReguin I like it. So far no major issues. I’ve made quite a few leather hat patches for friends and coworkers. Made some signs for my local schools and clocks for my wife’s office. I have a coworker that has the xtool but I don’t think he’s taken it out of the box yet.
You are a young guy and I hope all is fine. This being your latest video, I wish to ask two questions. Suede use for bucket seats for a 67 C10. I hear it wears and doesn’t last long if used frequently. Unfortunately, in a city bigger than St Louis, we have two over-priced stores, forcing most to internet purchases. They list steer hides at 1.3mm thickness, not ounces per square foot. This is what I purchased. I plan on sewing and have 2 machines capable. Thoughts? Thank you kindly for sharing your knowledge & experience. DK, Omaha.
You Can cut acrylic with a 10W Diode...black works best. Cannot do blue or clear or translucent acrylics only opaque. Wood gives the best detail so far, waiting on some leather sheets now to try. Thnx for the info
I've been doing some laser engraving in leather and it's pretty cool. I've also used it to cut some of my digital patterns out of heavy card stock with good results. I'm going to try some 1/8" plexiglass when I get a chance, I've been told that if you leave the backing paper on it, it helps a lot.
Great comparisons. Great video. I am starting to use a laser for leather. I've seen others say you should not use the chrome tanned leather in a laser, that it can do damage. Do you have some info you can share on that?
Thanks for watching! In addition to being harder to work with in the laser than veg tan (doesn’t cut as easily, more charring and smoke), I have heard that there are bad (unhealthy) fumes created from the chrome tanned that you don’t get with veg tan. Either way, ventilation is key, but you’ll probably have the best luck with veg tan of some sort, or at least that seems to be the consensus!
I watched this video series, but it seems to end here. No more videos? Hope the fumes from the laser didn’t get you! Thanks for all the helpful information!
Great video, Tanner! I have been using a 100w CO2 laser for quite a while for woodworking and have made a bunch of leather items with it too! It’s great for large batches of goods with small details. I know the CO2 is a bit different but if you have any questions about it or Lightburn which I’ve been using for a while don’t hesitate to reach out! Thanks again for the great content!
That's pretty awesome. Do the dark edges cause any problems? For example I'm imagining cutting a t-pocket for a wallet and not being able to sand out the underside of the "t" leaving most of the wallet with a clean edge and parts of it with dark edges. Any issues there?
I'm waiting for my D1 10w laser to get here. I'm looking to do some leather bracelets and maybe earrings. For cutting things out if you have air flow around and below your materials and an air assist the edges won't char as bad that way. I kinda wish I could get the air assist nozzle by it's self as I already have an air pp that would work fine.
Thank you for this video. I am considering one of these. Where do you buy your leather? I have a small embroidery business and some customers are asking for leather patch hats. Thanks in advance.
Is there just 1 type of veg tan? When the sites refer to sides or shoulders is this referring to the cow itself? What's my best bet if I want to buy a big piece and use it for hat patches? Thanks for the videos.
Can it transfer gold foils while engraving to leather. If one places a gold foil/leaf over the leather, will it run through and transfer or just burn out the foil?
How is the smell / fumes? I see you are operating things open in your shop, which is likely how i would be doing it if I got one... Is it bad or manageable with a few fans as you mention you normally do?
Hi there. Just ordered my XTool D1 Pro 20 w. I’m a flight attendant and wanting to make crew tags with a fairly substantial leather….along the lines of a leather coaster thickness. I know absolutely NOTHING about working with leather other than craft leather. What thickness should I be looking at using for this project? I’ll be following along with you as you have a great teaching style. Thanks in advance!
That’s awesome! I’d look for maybe 4-5 oz vegetable tanned (not chrome tanned, for the reasons shown in this video). I’d recommend something like Wickett and Craig bridle leather. You can call them directly to discuss options and order it if you want!
I was looking for some leather at Tandy Leather and they told me that the chrome-tanned leather will give off cyanide gas when burned. Didn't look as if you have any exhaust/filtering.
How was the smell when engraving and cutting the leather? Do you feel you’d need the exhaust system? Or is simply leaving your garage door open enough?
It's pretty stinky in my opinion. He mentions he typically leaves the bay door open and a fan to push it out. I would be careful since all leather is processed and those chemicals aren't super health boosting, I assume its worst when vaporized by a laser. Do your research before risking, especially if it can affect others/pets/kids if you don't work in a space away from others (since then it's not just a personal risk.) An extraction system would be best, but garage door is better than nothing.
Thanks for the great video! I have this laser and was playing with leather. When I engraved a logo, it would stay visible but would smudge onto the leather if touched. It may be my settings. Did you find this to be the case? Any suggestions? Thanks!
Don't mean to jump in on the conversation but I have the sam thing happen to me. It's nice and dark lettering until you touch it and it smears. Which in return stains it and it does not come off. I've tried blue masking tape and it does not go through the tape? Running at 100mm speed 20% power? Thanks
I know it's been a while since you made this video (very nice btw, experimental way is the best ) but what's the speed and output you're using to cut this 7/8 oz tan veg leather ? i just got the D1pro 20w and have been trying unsuccessfully some tests. i've ordered some low tack masking tape to minimise the charring, eager to run some news tests. and do you make any adjustments according to the leather color ? thanks !!
Yes curious too the setting used in Lightburn! He mentioned he "adapted the settings from" the other to Lightburn, so I'm wondering if its the settings shown at 2:38.
For the engraving portion, about how long did it take to actually engrave your logo? Trying to determine if this one is fast enough. Also, thanks for putting out such an awesome video! Love your work.
Does anyone know what kind of tape is that? I have been looking for it and only found keywords like “low tack tape” and “sewing tape”. Hope anyone can help. Much appreciated. Thanks!
You should try applying a light coat of finger paint on both sides of the clear acrylic to see if it cuz. I use the finger paint for engraving glass and it worked for me.
laserbox software sucks... very glitchy and still cannot connect to my Xtool D1. I use lightburn which costs money and that sucks too.. otherwise the Xtool creator works but is very basic and really doesn't allow much manipulation of the file... more or less just used to burn

Oh, that's awesome! I hope you enjoy the laser! It's been fun to learn about!

How much is outside power,in Europe standard?
Is this the 10W output version?
Could this cut cardstock? Or does it burn it?
If you get the air assist it will help with cuts and burning. Has anyone done this with a 5w?

can you engrave leather baseball glove with this machine

It cuts acrylic, but not clear acrylic. You need black, brown, dark blue, etc.
Oh cool! That’s great to know. Thank you!
I have a different brand laser and it cuts clear fine. The edges aren’t 100% glassy clear but they aren’t burnt or brown
You should try applying a light coat of finger paint on both sides of the clear acrylic to see if it cuz. I use the finger paint for engraving glass and it worked for me.
Please be careful as I believe the gas from chrome tan leather isn’t safe with a laser.
Oh gosh yes I agree. That was the first thing I learned before I bought mine which I just setup today.
