I have the exact same press and engraver. I just got the same patches off Amazon. I was wondering what you found was a good rate and depth for engraving on those patches with the xtool d1 pro. Also what a good temperature and time would be for applying the patches to the hats.

Great and informative video, but I do have a question: what settings have you found our best for pre-made leatherette bonding?
I have been making my first few hats, and the patches come out perfectly from my Glowforge, I have found that only the center of the patches are adhering well after being pressed.
For reference, the settings I’m using are 287° for 30 seconds.
Thoughts or suggestions on how I could improve my results?

Hi. I have recently purchased the same vevor hat press. I know that the pressure is controlled by the knob on top, but how do you tell what a general setting is for the pressure? For example, on another tutorial, a person recommended a medium pressure for a leatherette patch with a trucker hat. What would be a good starting point on that knob to give a medium pressure? I’m trying to avoid a lot of trial and error with the hats and wasting a bunch of money in the process. Thanks!

    • @TheReformationWoodshop
      @TheReformationWoodshop  5 місяців тому +1

You can tell how much pressure you’ve applied by how difficult it is to press the handle down. In my experience, you shouldn’t have to fight the handle and it shouldn’t really be clamping so hard. That’ll leave creases in your hats.

My wife sees clothes so I just grab any scrap she has for the buffer. Some materials do work better than others I’ve found. Thanks so much. Worked like a charm. I have a little tip. I tried using elastic to hold the patch like you did in the video, but it left slight ridges on the patch. So...next one, I warmed up the glue just a tad with my heat gun and put the patch in place. Then I immediately pressed it with the Vevor. It didn't budge and no more marks on the patch. Wah-Lah! Thanks again!

I use a piece of fabric my wife had laying around but most folks tend to use some kind of silicone. How do you cut the patches to shape so perfectly are you just using scissors?

I have Lonestar leatherette sheets with the adhesive already on them and using my F1 X tool... I keep getting a flame alarm when trying to cut! I am using the settings that x tool says to use for their leather patches. I am guessing the settings are off and causing the "flame" that triggers the alarm.. any suggestions on settings for cutting with the x tool F1? I know you said you use the D1 for mass production, but have you used the F1 and can possibly give some tips and settings on using the F1?

Markis or anyone that can help! I'm having dramas with the seems in the hats. As they are raised a little a stripe mark is showing through on the leatherette side. I've tried different temps/times but can't work it out. It's like the glue is seeping right through on that seem. It's the same width as the the whole of the seem.
    Any ideas? Thanks

I’ve had this same problem and I think the issue is pressure. Try dialing it back… also quality of patches really matters. The Amazon ones has decreased in quality recently.

I ordered the same press but it seems like the part where I place the hat is the wrong size and it’s creasing the hats

    • @TheReformationWoodshop

That can be an issue with tons of presses I’ve seen some people add their own pad there to form fit the hats better

Great video, I have the same hat press for years and do not have the success you have . I find the Richardson hats do not sit right on the platen . I am going to play with your time and temperature. Thank you

They do sit a little funny but it doesn’t cause the patches to malfunction from what I’ve seen so far.

Does that press leave marks on the cap?

It can if your heat and time and tension settings are off. I believe all presses will if your settings aren’t correct.
