I had the band sign the promo vinyl for 7 Words b/w Teething. When Steph saw it he said "Alright, old school" and smiled.
Steph is a G. I remember my girl got him on the phone for me when they performed in NY 2006 and I talked to him for a minute.

NOW THIS IS WHAT TRULY DEFINES THE ORIGINAL DEFTONES SOUND, I MISS THIS ERA!!!
I can appreciate old Deftones but they are undeniably better where they are now than previously. This is messy and raw which I great, but they could’ve only gone so far with this sound. Now they are still heavy but melodic and their music feels otherworldly at times. It’s a far better and lasting experience than just angry rapping over heavy riffs. Again, still love the old style, but I wouldn’t change a thing about their evolution as a band
my first introduction to deftones was the white pony album.. and then i got the first 2 albums. I always thought Adrenaline was more than any 'nu metal' sound.. just sounded really urban aggro.. its hard to explain but I feel like it sticks out from what other bands were doing. But i do like the evolution of the band and WP still hands down my favorite album.

Early Deftones is literally the best. So much unadulterated anger and angst between (Like) Linus, Adrenaline, and Around The Fur.
The demo version from the old 7 Words cassette single is amazing.

That's the track I learned about Deftones! I borrowed a VHS with the Crow 2 from a friend, and there was this band that was heavy as hell but with unique and haunting vocals. And that's how my love for the Deftones started!
Mine was root. And then this was my 2nd fave track for a while.
Chi's baseline over the feedback from the guitar and the drums during the bridge, makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside....RIP Chi....live forever...

Hey Stephen! I hope you see this. Back when I was about 15 years old. Im 40 now (yikes lol). You guys did a signing at street side records here in St. Louis Mo. You were the COOLEST dude and hung out with us kids for HOURS. The rest of the band didn't give 2 craps about us and wouldn't even talk to us. But you were awesome. You were our favorite band and my favorite guitarist. It meant the world to us! One of the best parts is that the next day you guys were playing at Riverport. I can't remember what fest it was... ozfest or point fest probably. Dont think it was warped. But we told you we would be there to see you and we would be in the 4th row. And you saw us from the stage and waved to us. I just want you to know that was one of the coolest parts of my life. I was going through a deftness time capsule this morning and it led me here to listen to one of my all time favorite songs, Teething. And it reminded me of that awesome moment in time. Anyway, I hope you see this and want you to know that after 25 years, I still remember it. I hope you're having a great life.
This is Deftones to me. Much love and respect to the band for White Pony and onward, but 90's Deftones is how I vibe with them. RAW power.

I remember seeing this scene in The Crow and it being THE moment that made me want to start seeking out more rock and metal. literally the song that started my entire journey into harder shit. and then later down the road, when I got my first guitar, this was the FIRST song that I learned on it. this song started it all for me and will always hold a very special place in my heart lol
