#Deftones #Headup #StephenCarpenter
What most people don''t realize is that this song originally was created by Max Cavalera, the main riff belongs to him. Chino and Max did the lyrics for ''Head Up'' and the name ''Soulfly'' Max took from the chorus of this song and created his first band after he split from Sepultura in 97. What a great song and collaboration... It ROCKS!
BRASIL MENTIONED🇧🇷🇧🇷
White Pony is a masterpiece. BUT Around The Fur will ALWAYS be my favorite Deftones album. It changed my life. It rocks so hard while also being creative and artistic.
Dont forget Koi no yokan
Hell yes, agreed. I bought White pony and then worked backwards. Steph's tone is all time for me. The sound to aspire to!
Prech
Like Linus
@@josemejia9068 not a fan of that album. not really a fan of any deftones after white pony. Their style changed too much with the 7 strings and lower tuning. They lost the epic vibe the first 3 albums had for me. The self titles does have a couple I don't mind but peak deftones for me will ALWAYS be around the fur, then white pony and then adrenaline.
Next week: Stef sitting here 4 +40 mins then starts playing Damone*
And hits a bong during that one little voice snippet.
Haha I fuckin hope so!!!
that would make me the happiest boy on all of flat earth
Hell yeah to Damone!!!
Lol
Never gets old. Song has knocked my nuts sideways for 20+ yrs, every time. An all-time jam. Thank you again, SC! This series is just great.
I couldn’t agree more! This jam never quits being as good as the first time I heard it. Deftones forever!!!
Couldn’t have said it better myself 😀
No doubt bro. It might be in my Top 5 of his best riffs of all time. So many greats but rn I'm thinking:
1. Battle Axe
2. Tempest
3. Lotion (bridge/outro)
4. When Girls Telephone Boys (chorus)
5. Headup (verse/chorus)
*honorable mention - Hearts/Wires (entire composition), Rosemary (intro/verse), Bored (verse)ei
@@scoutwithoutclout i think battle axe is Chino's riff. Tempest as well i think
@@Rodzilla97 wow don't I feel dumb. I probably didn't realize it because they didn't play battle axe when I saw them live. Either way it's a team effort and those 2 chemistry is awesome.
If I'm being honest I don't know where I'd be without Deftones
They fnnn Rock!!🔥⚡️
I didn’t think about that until you said it 🤔 🤯
@@2hits6 ahahahhahahahha me either 🤣🤣🤣😂😂😆
❤️
taste that never fade
Used to play on a deftones cover band and this song got everyone “dancing” EVERYTIME we played it. A classic!
Dancing??? No Dancing to deftones
@@adamjay2ndward this one may have gone over your head a little lol
do you do weddings and funerals?
@@JG-nx3jg if i said sure would it get u to leave?
@CYB3R2K30 Yep. Make sure its drop c# or dropc. both sound decently similar for this song.
Its gonna go 9/9/9/9 -10/10/10/ - 11/11 - 12
I'll never forget hearing this live for the first time at Ozzfest 99. I've been hooked ever since 🤘🤘🤘
Hell ya I was there too
me too. the lineup was absolutely insane that year
One of the best songs from one of the best metal albums of all time
One of my all-time favorite guitarists.
🤘
🤘
🤘
mine too, until i heard hes a flat earther
@@Ottophil Flat Earth theory is for sure bs, but you can't deny his talent. The dude has been killing it for 30 years now.
We used to rock to this song in our local club every Friday night! 🔥🔥🔥
Dude, the fact that Carpenter teaches his riffs (instead of guarding them) speaks volumes about what music means to him. It's so secure and selfless, a deed that enhances our collective music community. Thank you for being a lifer, brother. Music "success" is too often measured quantitatively instead of qualitatively. Management's litmus test are album sales or data, but they can't measure what your music means...how it makes me feel. In a world that has been turned upside down for 2 years, this is a great escape, my reprieve, a young musician's inspiration, a community's sincerest pleasure, & reminder me that the best music is emotive and connective. Its vibes like this which will bring a rock renaissance. IMO bands like Deftones & Tool are set apart, celebrated because they play great hard rock without compromising melody or feel. It's the best.
You wanna know the answer to raw and beautiful emotions and that brutal energy shown in alot of these songs? It's just a mix of moderated use of drugs while making these songs, deadass.
I know you might not wanna hear this but it's drugs... I won't lie to you from my experience of doing my fair share of drugs while enjoying these songs and this band around the fur to self titled era type of work is definitely marijuana, maybe some psychedelics and other then that, it's just damn amazing down to earth dudes who can write hella great music and are talented af but it's definitely drugs and mix of different things bro, like their past and the current shit going on that day when he wrote that track with Max Cavelera & Chino Moreno. I'm pretty sure most most of the Deftones fanbase literally smokes marijuana and even Deftones support it I believe
I too love tool... Deftones, tool and a perfect circle are all in my top 3.
@@icyflann7178 yes they're my favorites too. 13th step and around the fur are like my go to White Pony, Diamond Eyes, self titled, all of it's great
@@scoutwithoutclout all of those are excellent 👌👌
THIS is still on my gym playlist 🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾
ditto!!!!!!!!
This song has one of the coolest riffs ever.
MY OWN SUMMER TBM
@@oanonimoblackTBM??
Yes! Love a Steftone Friday and this is a classic riff 🤘🏾
I've just bought one of the SC-203 signature LTDs and the first thing I'm going to do is tune to C# and learn this whole album from these videos.
I have been waiting for him to do this for us ever since they started doing these. How can Stephen not get up kick that chair out of the way start head-banging and just rocking it
maybe because he played this song like 4000 times ... hahaha
Deftones keeps me on the straight and narrow! Thanks Steph for all these play thrus!! Keep them coming!!!
Love these videos! As a drummer influenced by Deftones, I'd love to see some of these made by Abe, I'm sure they would blow up the internet. Cheers from Santiago de Chile!
Yeah, Abe is the man, killer groove, creativity and insane power
I third this
insane performance! could you do a classic from Adrenaline like Root or Engine9?
Engine9 hell yes
I’m hoping he plays something old like like linus or cant even breathe
I wouldn’t mind if he did all of Adrenaline.
All of Adrenaline please
I'm sure it's coming
That bit where the vocals and (2nd) guitar come in!
I used to cover this song in my band in the 90's. Always gets me pumped up! The riffmaster strikes again
Absolutely love this song and it’s history behind the beginning of Soulfly… man those were the days!!!
what history with soulfly?
What?
Have you guys not listened to the song? It features Max Cavalera and he even screams the word “Soulfly” in the chorus lol… oh ans by the way this song is about the loss of their friend Dana, the loss in which was also the inspiration behind the name “Soulfly” and their first album
@@Chopp333r lol for real. not only ppl can't hear anything they don't even take the time to search about this for 30 secs
Dana was Max's stepson
Lyrics:
Got back out back off the forefront
I never said or got to say bye to my boy
But it's often I try I think about how I'd be screaming
And the times would be bumping
All our minds would be flowing
Taking care of shit like hey 'holmes'
What you needing sometimes life will be coming off whack
And will open your eyes
This has begun
You seen to have some doubt
I feel you next to me, feeling it
Getting spacey with the common love of music
Think of this as the sun and the mind as a tool
But we could bounce back from this one
With attitude will and some spirit
With attitude will and your spirit
We'll shove it aside
Soulfly
Fly high
Soulfly
Fly free
Shut your shit please say what you will
I can't think side step around
I'm bound to the freestyle
Push it down to the ground with a nova dash but they watch you
Now climb up, super slide
The spirit's so low it's coming over you
Soulfly
Fly High
Soulfly
Fly free
You walk into this world
Walk into this world with your head up high
Walk into this world with your head up high
Walk into this world with your head up high
Walk into this world with your head up high
(Headup)
What a mean riff! Thanks Steph!
Much love from Cebu Philippines.
The best group on the planet i will be 90 and still feel it
So ahead of its time! Simply a fave.
All these years later and this song still absolutely kills!
I jus went back to being a kid... what a time in music back then and WHAT a FKN song!
Man I discovered deftones late and randomly but I’m so glad I did I fell in love with them instantly they r my favorite❤️
I love these playthroughs, please keep these coming :)
Awesome work. Love everything by you guys.
I remember going to a Deftones concert in the late 90s, they opened the set with this song... the place went absolutely crazy!
LOVE IT ! BRAVO
adore this .. listening since high school.. great album..
One of the classics as far as collabs go.
Loving the o.g. Axe. I had to get one of my own, no doubt.
You the man STEPH.
Yeah, great time again, thanx Stephen ✌️🍀
Such a simple riff, yet so intricately heavy!
love it, love it, love it.
I've been itching for this one.
Aquele tempero brasileiro... Muita onda o Max ter participado disso. Parabéns!
I’ll love Deftones forever 🖤
Favorite band Favorite album 1st song I learned when the album dropped. Still a banger. Thanks for this one Steph 💚🤘🏼fire
Amazing
Uma das melhores bandas de nu metal
Amoooooooo
MASTERPIECE 🖤🖤🖤
Oh year. Pure guitar rock. Plus awesome lyrics from chino.
Oh baby. Feels good to be here as it premieres!
Stephen rides everything so well, his riffs don't have to be intricate but they have mad bounce and emotion. Staple of Nu-Metal for sure.
Spirits so low it’s coming over you!
Man this song gets the people going!!
Definately in my top 5! Favorite collaboration song, with Max Cavalera from sepultura
Deftones are the best🔥🤘
I love this.... 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Love it
Nice , loved y’all since I was 15 ❤️
Childhood song of mine. Thank you Deftones!!!!!

The outro is just perfect
Best Tune!!! 🖤❤️🖤🔊🔊🔊🔊🔊
This song is a real nod back to their first album for sure, especially with the vocal style.
so awesome song, RIP dana

Legit my favorite song
timeless song...
this song is such a banger
Deftones me salvó la vida.
Best album 💿
Sick my dude. Let's go even more OG next time. TEETHING!
Max killed it in this song! Soulfly!!! What a heavy groove it has.
Awesome!
Really waiting for Kimdracula!!!
3:32 this part is so sick
I made a video of this with a 6 string Gibson les paul. After seeing this I suck and was in drop d so tuning is off. Still was fun to play. Thank you Stephen and the deftones for making amazing music.
Is it in Drop C#? What is Steph tuned to here on a 7 string?
@@REZNAP he is in drop C# exactly like a 6 string, but his very highest string is just tuned to another high Eb
@@xXCZXx Thank you for the information, I appreciate it! I was confused, because at the 0:38 mark it looks like he is using root/fifth power chords!? (sorry guitar geek here)
@@REZNAP dw am here as well, so just to be clear, his THICKEST string is a C#. the chord he is fretting is:
2
2
2
4
x
x
x
not sure if that will mess up after posting this comment, but it is just a drop D power chord with an octave higher fifth
pure sonic gold
Keep them coming 🤙🏽
love you bro thanks
Legend
I knew this was going to be next!!! Yes!! Can’t tell you how many times I covered this song in bands lol. This is awesome. And even tho I thought I was playing it right, I wasn’t lol. Love these vids
just commit bro, no one's the wiser. In 6th grade I didn't properly know how play saxophone so I would move my fingers and not actually push any air into it so I didn't stuff up on stage. Then another saxophone player admitted they do the same thing
@@user-hb2ib1je7j oh I hear ya man, it didn’t stop me from playing it. We played the shit out of it!!! Just saying that it’s refreshing to see the song played correctly by the guy who wrote it, makes it feel like playing a new song again. We weren’t far off, but it’s great to hear and see all these songs played correctly.
Love how he plays all the old shot on a seven string now!🤘🏻 now I have to relearn everything lol
Nah, It's tuned the same as on a 6. The 7th string just lies dormant, and is tuned the same as the 6th from bottom to high.
I don't know how he can just SIT there and play this song. I wanna bounce around when playing it on my guitar.
Thx for the friday live 🤘
We are all in debt to Deftones for their music - how many artists are inspired and carrying the flag further? Lots
I look forward to the "Hexagram" video 🤘🔥🎶

THIS SONG ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
One of the best on the album!
Love you, Steph. Its definitely a globe though.
My band in high school, Seven Stitches, used to cover this song and I would do the vocals for Max's part.
Hope all of these make it on to one big video, formerly known as a DVD to you kids!
When I first learned this song, those hammer-ons killed me after thirty seconds 😭
🖤🖤💜💜💜💜 made my Friday :)
Oh ya baby that ROCKED 🤘😎🤘
It's really cool seeing the playthroughs for older tracks adapted to 7-string, or was the original recording Stef's first use of a 7 on record?
No he used regular 6 strings through White Pony. Self titled and onward was 7 strings and later 8 and 9 strings
@@FlyingV555 That's what I thought too.
My favourite from Around the Fur
You can tell he loves playing this track
