For denial of access I have had great luck with crushed eggshells, it does not kill the nest though, they just cant walk over it without getting damage.
I had a huge fire ant mound that I got rid of with potted meat laced with 1/4 tsp of boric acid. It took a couple weeks but it's gone now. Fire ants do eat protein. I had tried a sweet base but they didn't go for that. Boric acid is much finer powder than borax so that's what I use because it mixes in better. If you put too much boric acid in, they will reject it. Even a 1% ratio will have an effect, according to some government agency that deals with that stuff. In fact they recommended not going above 1%. It is slow acting which is good because they feed it to the queen, and the whole colony, before it starts to work. It does take a few tries to figure out what will work. Very smart of you to block them off that way!
Thank you very much for your info. That is really good to know. I'll have to write down that fire ants like protein. I had Borax on my store list but I will be getting more Boric Acid. Thank you. I had to think of something they were going everywhere.

lol I love your accent you from Jersey, Boston, New York I notice that northern accent. And yea I have ant issues at my house, they’re usually the smaller black ants and I made a mixture with boric acid powder with honey and cut out a hole in a plastic bottle for easy access and I caught tons of ants that way and they weren’t able to get back out of the bottle. But you’re right ants can be smart and picky!
I'm close to Jersey lol I'm glad it caught your ants but the main thing you want is them to take it back to the colony & kill the queen. I tried the bottle outside in a dry mix but the ants didn't want it.
