  • Ants in the garden are not always a problem - a little annoying, and they can help to spread aphids. However, if they begin to cause too much of a nuisance (or, as in this case, loss of sales!) it's time to get rid of the ants. Here I'll make up a simple ant trap that will help me to get rid of the entire colony if I do it right.
Here's a follow-up video to answer some of the common questions: • Get Rid of Ants: Q&A a...

Carpenter ants invade our house every spring; we always put commercial traps out for them but they always return. Luckily I watched this video last year and tried this method. I followed the instructions exactly -- I almost ran to the store for frozen waffles before I remembered I had some old pancake mix -- and was rewarded this spring as for the first time ever, no carpenter ants. Thanks!

Exactly, when I saw a massive army of ants marching down my sidewalk, carrying what I thought to be a food source, ended up they were eggs, I immediately thought, "exterminator and $$$, but would they really exterminate? Or regulate? Exterminating isn't a great business model ironically, for an exterminator, Jason just saved me some prescious $$$ I can use to put gas in my work van, this video is everything that's good about social media.
If exterminators ever get a rep on K street, this would be banned. I wish there was no censorship on social media and the powers that be would let us watch anything, and make our own choices, this is a perfect example, if the government was involved in exterminating ants, we wouldn't see this, ya off the wall comment, but that was my first thought after seeing video, "what if government had approve how we dealt w/insect infestation, sad but true we're heading there

This is a great way of doing it. Using bait traps require extreme diligence in making sure they never run out of liquid, until the queen (or queens) have perished from ingesting the poison (borax), and is why most people don't think bait traps/liquid work. Using the waffle pretty much solves that. Very useful tip, thank you.

@@lolwtnick4362 I've never had the "them" move on because there are no living ants left to move on after they've been "treated".
There is some localized damaged to that small spot of grass, but it does recover naturally.
This same treatment also works for in-ground yellow jackets. Of course for yellow jackets there are some extra precautions and procedures you would want to follow.
First, before you even begin to approach the entrance to their in-ground hive/nest, you want to wait no less than two hours after the sun has completely set.... and even then you want to approach with caution.
Pre plan what you are going to do and do it quickly. Have everything you need at your finger tips, and plan your escape route.
You may even want to practice your plan, less the water, in another similar area nearby.
I would use a five quart pan of boiling water and a good squirt of Dawn dishwashing soap.
      Approach the entrance.
Pour the water in the hole.
Cover it with a six inch square screen.
Place bricks or rocks on the screen to hold it down.
Walk away and go in for the night.
Check it out the next day and evaluate your results and see if further action is necessary.

I do something similar: I mix even parts of Borax and non-dairy coffee creamer, grind them to even consistencies with a mortar and pestle, then put it on their trails. You can often see them carrying it back to their colony, which also gives away their entrance to the house so I can seal it after they've ended their parade. It takes 1 to 2 weeks to completely eradicate them, but it's pretty effective. You can also take some narrow masking tape, bend it to a right angle and make a little shelf to put it on. This is helpful because, in the country I'm living in, they come through the walls.

I use the used tops of canning jars for the liquid bait. High enough to hold the liquid, but low enough to give easy access. I use (by weight) 1 part borax, 5 parts sugar, 14 parts water. This ends up at 5% borax by weight, which is what is shown on Terro traps. Works for Argentina ants in the Bay Area. Thanks Jason, I love your content.

Well, this is one method I intend on trying since each spring, I have invaders in my kitchen no matter what I try, cleaning, scrubbing, hiding anything and everything enticing. I do know one thing for certain-- and I'll try to remain "delicate" in my comment--everyone can guess what store-bought ant traps/bait are good for!!! I have stood and watched them pass right by without even "testing the doorway" to the trap. Last year in spring, upon awakening one morning and entering the kitchen for coffee, I had a pile of the buggers a half-inch thick right on the kitchen floor!! It was enough to make your skin crawl. All I could do at that point was to get out my trusty Raid and dose them, then leave the house because I couldn't breathe. It must have been the entire ant hill because after I swept them up (two dustpans full!!) none showed up afterward. It took a lot of cleaning, though, to get rid of that poison. Well, they are back again, so I'll see if the borax surprise works.

Omg, my wife spotted a trail of ants literally 10ft long all heading along our sidewalk into a flower bed against front of house, I have only ever seen in documentaries, every single one was carrying a little white spec, living in a townhouse, next to a house where children play out front, I just assumed it was a food source the found from something dropped, realizing they were eggs from this video was incredibly informative, and I realize I can't live and let live Wich is my general approach to life as a conservative, but the amount of ants I saw was mind boggling, multiply that by everyone of them carrying an egg, if I didn't watch this particular video, I'd either do nothing, or pay hundreds of $$$ for an exterminator w/ chemicals.
Only thing I don't have is borax, I will be fallowing everything you showed us, and hopefully update with positive results. Thank you for sharing.
