    Lyrics:
    There's a moment in time
And it's stuck in my mind
Way back, when we were just kids
'Cause your eyes told the tale
    Of an act of betrayal
    I knew that somebody did
    Oh, waves of time
    Seem to wash away
    The scenes of our crimes
    For you this never ends
    Can you stay strong?
    Can you go on?
    Kristy, are you doing okay?
    A rose that won't bloom
    Winter's kept you
Don't waste your whole life trying
To get back what was taken away

I was 12 when it happened to me. I'm about to turn 22 and am just now getting help for what was done to me.
Everyone else has said it but the "don't waste your whole life trying, to get back what was taken away", is so true. I can't go back to a point where i was repressing what happened to me and didn't have to deal with all the messiness that comes with dealing with something like that. But you know what, i wasn't doing okay.
We can pretend like we're doing just fine, but i know from my personal experience that once you acknowledge trauma that a lot of behaviors start making sense. Even if you try to run from it, its still in control. It will eat away at you inside and you won't be able to get close to people. But there is a way out.
I know it's hard to believe when you can't see it, but it's true. The person who did this to me will likely never face justice, but I can get my own sense of healing and closure from closing the old wounds.
To whoever is out there and is reading this, you will get through this. It wont be easy, but it'll be for the better in the end.
Thank you Dexter for writing this song. It's given me a lot of comfort even 16 years after you wrote it as i navigate my healing journey.

Isabella Evans that line is like an icicle into my heart. It’s true, it’s good advice, but it’s so difficult to let go of the innocence stolen that I get hung up on in life.

It’s an icicle for most. Wounds don’t heal and it’s nature to see what you’ve lost every time you close your eyes. I just wish I would of told her I loved her one last time

This was one of the key teachings of Buddhism. I used to study at a Buddhist school and this was a philosophy that the Buddha teaches. Let go and move on because time cannot be turned backwards and you have so little time to be on this planet, so just live it to the fullest. No matter how dark your life was, there is still light ahead, you just need to let go completely so that you can embrace light.

@@chrisp7110 Indeed! Back then those words rang true. Since then, I have gone through a Major change, a shift in perspective. I dove deep within, healing everything I could reach. Even being able to forgive the one that stole my innocence and childhood. 😊 It no longer consumes me. I am Free.
There is no 'getting it back', but I was able to do something even Better. Forgive and Heal. 💙💚💜

Dexter, I don't know if you read these comments, but I wanted to thank you for pursuing your music. I know you walked away from a Ph.D program and, as I'm pursuing a similar degree, I understand the driving passion it takes to get that far into the sciences. Your music has lifted my life and has made the world a better place. Thank you.

What makes this song so beautiful (and rather heartbreaking at the same time) is that the girl's abuse stuck with Dexter for this long and clearly affected him. We meet so many people in life, and those we meet in school stick with us the longest because we essentially know them for the better part of around 15 years on average. We see them 5 days of the week during the school year. Friends or not... these people will always have a spot in your memories. I cannot think of a single memory from my time in school that would stick to me like the meaning behind this song. And that shows just how a small scale event (one thay affected only one girl) had harnessed itself to Dexter's memories for a lifetime, to where he made a song about it.

I think it happens to more folks than you'd think. Some are just super sensitive to what's happening around them. It's often also a side effect of being a child with a narcissistic parent or abusive parents.
I think a lot of artists (music or otherwise) draw from that well.
I have quite a few memories from 30 & 40 years ago. Which friends had stuff going on at home or some at school. People I barely knew. But, I could sense certain things about people.

I still remember the girl from.my high school who had to lose out on everything after being driven near mad by her family to do what was called the 'suicide 5' or 5 very hard subjects that had public state exams. To get the best results to go to uni etc. Turns out this poor thing who seemed so together, ran school council, was super sporty and won trophies and shit in many sports as well as crushing it in rather hard subjects...
Nearly died of malnutrition thanks to bulimia.
      Fucking parents.
I still think about her suffering and misery to this day.

Dexter, when was in high school, knew a girl named Kristy. The girl has been sexually abused and everyone knew it. But no one did anything. Dexter is the boy in the end who tried to do something. As we see in the final scene, Kristy went to find Dexter. The Offspring singer didn't do anything but now he wrote this song and it's dedicated to her as an apology for not helping her.
Dexter Holland, you are such a great man!

This reminds me of a story I read on Reddit about a girl who was horribly bullied; it was posted by one of the people who used to torment her, who had heard a rumor from classmates that the girl committed suicide after she left the school. The former bully was trying to find her, to see if she was okay and apologize - there isn't a strong enough word - for treating her like that, let her know that she (the OP) had admired her kindness and talent as a ballet dancer, and was hateful to her because she was jealous. But OP said that she's been unable to locate the girl. Her post was so full of remorse for hurting her and unless a miracle happens and they run into each other, she won't ever know what happened. To think that the timid, sweet girl OP described ended her life or is in a bad place breaks my heart. It's just a story on the internet about a total stranger, but it haunts me.

Early in the morning , no cars on the freeway, just me, my old British car, the open road, and the smooth purring of the engine. I am on my own and I do not think about my problems, quite frankly I do not give a shit, just pure driving . Also, Greenday, Nirvana, and HIM accompany my weekend soundrack. A rose that won't bloom
    Winter's kept you
Don't waste your whole life trying
To get back what was taken away
Though the marks on your dress
    Had been neatly repressed
I knew that something was wrong
And I should have spoke out
    And I'm so sorry now
    I didn't know
    Cause we were so young
    Oh, clouds of time
    Seem to rain on
    Innocence left behind
    And it never goes away
    Can you stay strong?
    Can you go on?

I sent this song to my first serious gf in high school when it came out long after we’d broken up. Last time we interacted online. She seemed to really appreciate it.
Years passed and she contacted me about where she was in life. She seemed to be doing good and so was I. Years after that and things didn’t turn out exactly great for me. But, I hope they did for her, she deserves it more.

Even though I've never experienced sexual assault, I still relate to this song, even as an adult. Sometimes you just need someone to speak UP and ASK YOU if you are doing okay. Genuinely and sincerely. People can be really good at hiding depression, loneliness, sadness. Sometimes those that seem the busiest or cheeriest are the ones who are suffering the most. Because no one can tell.

This tune is really good stuff. I am someone from the Styx era. Styx is one of my favorite groups and arguably one of the greatest groups of all time. Offspring is certainly a group that will go down in history with many other great bands. I have little doubt that if this had been in the jukeboxes of the restaurants, skating rinks, arcades and bowling alleys of that day, many of the youth of that day would be more than eager to drop a quarter in the jukebox and play it.

But I've failed. She suicided. Last message she sent me "life is not what you think it is, you think you can make everyone smile but in your heart there are only tears that you can't avoid the pain of holding back from unspeakable torture" . This song really make me reminds her everytime i listen.

I remember listening to this all the time while suffering at home from abuse. I'd write in my journal, I felt so relatable to Kristy and I even did the scribble lines and tear drops as well. No one ever really cared about me coming to school with bruises in the fifth grade but by sixth I covered them along with my scars with sleeves that had holes cut in the thumbs. I'd change in the bathroom stall for gym and get bad grades for being late to gym. Life was just awful back then and seeing Kristy from another persons point of view I wish I could've helped save her, but that's me and I wish someone would've helped save me. I'm 20 now and things are very different, but like he sings, "oh, waves of time seem to wash away the scene of our crimes, but for you this never ends." I feel like I'll be miserable forever for having a destroyed childhood and teen years. 4 years of abuse free.

Looking at the comments and just astounded at the people that are only focused on pigeonholing the band and feel like they are obligated to criticize the style, and are completely missing the point of the song. It's sad that so many people are that shallow and/or entitled that they can't even pay attention to what's being presented to them.
