He was the quickest of a very good lot, on that day; but he had a faster car [while it lasted] than Jim Hall and Dan Shaw. Masten won by showing up with the best combo of speed and reliability.
Great to see the Sadler MK 5. Sadler was the first to build an American V8 mid engine in a sports racing car, in 1960. Also great to see Roger Ward's Cooper-Buick, the first swap of an American V8 into an existing mid engine sports racer. Historic, by the next year, big American V8s in mid engine cars would be the winning combination.
I was there, and I can say that this film is more accurate than most. One exception was the very underrated Canadian driver, Dan Shaw. Driving the powerful, but challenging Sadler Mark 5 [#166], he held fourth place against the best drivers of his era until his transmission began to fail. Gurney, Gregory, Hall and Penske were all driving cars that were more sophisticated, owned by teams that were much better funded than 'Ecurie Portland'. An amazing effort, entirely unnoticed by our press.

@@lolbr3720 Yes. I still attend the odd club race session at Mosport because much of what you like is still present among the 'amateurs'. For example; for the last 2 years, James Beaton, driving a Corvette built originally for the Daytona 24 hour race has dominated GT1 racing; not only because he is an excellent driver, but also because he is a genius mechanic. He modified the car himself to handle what Bill Sadler once called a squirrel cage circuit; which is, of course, radically different than Daytona. It's nice to watch that kind of independent effort pay off!
A fabulous mix of cars .. Porsche, Jaguar, Chaparral, Cooper, Elva, Ferrari, Sadler and my favourite, the Lotus 19. The sixties was a great era for sports car racing in North America. These sort of events were a prelude to the Can-Am series that started in the mid 60s.
I miss the claustrophobic layout so much. Damn you JJ Lehto. Great video, made so much better knowing my dad and his family were there. Seeing the prism at the top of the control tower without any branding really threw me for a loop. I knew what it was but have never seen it like that.

The crowd, myself very much included, were beyond excited to see a Le Mans Champion live at Mosport for the first time since 1985(6). Schnitzer shows up, does all the Friday and Saturday stuff, gets out-qualified by Panoz and suddenly JJ Lehto throws a tantrum and refuses to race because the track is "too dangerous". It certainly needed improvements but the withdrawal of BMW/Schnitzer caused a bit of an over-reaction IMHO and killed a lot of the character of the track. My grandfather raced there. My dad was a Marshall there. If I still lived in Ontario, I certainly would carry on the tradition. One man's s*&^fit killed an awesome track.
I was there and this film fills in the blanks in that I get to see the bits I missed that happened on the other side of the track. Liked Masten Gregory's work, and Dan Gurney was very quick. I think it was in practice, but it could have been in the race. We were up at the top of the straight and the cars were whizzing by, when we saw a golden flying saucer coming up over the straight and towards us. It crashed into the ground about 60 feet from us. It was a metal fire extinguisher that had 'escaped' from one of the cars. Lucky it never made it to the crowd.
There's nothing un-friendly about the atmosphere at MoSport today. With the odd exception of drunken hooligans at night (depending where you're camping lol). It's still very much all about the racing. Granted, the crowds there aren't nearly as large as they were for events like in this video, largely because MoSport doesn't host such famous events anymore. But you still see quite a lot of race fans out there for the ALMS "Grand Prix of Mosport".
at 4:11 #328 corvette special looks to be a Devin. 1 of 11 devin's with a corvette motor and chassis built in england. we had devin #45 in our garage in gardena,ca from 1960 to 63. it won at santa barbara with dave macdonald as the driver but lew spencer drove it mostly. #44 was bill devin's personal car, no race history. check out racing sports cars .com for more history.
Bradley wound up 4th. 3rd in the 2nd heat. Moss corner was quite messy at the start. Penske & Gurney’s Lotii had a synchromesh transmission whereas Bradley ‘s Lotus had the motorcycle type transmission. Better cars for the top 3.
I never said Mosport was unfriendly, I meant motorsports in general have become an unfriendly environment. There are exceptions, but by the looks of it the behaviour of team managers, sponsors, drivers, mechanics, etc. is nothing like back then.

Yes. He was one of this classic racing era's great characters. And a damn good driver. Early in his career, Jim Clark respected Gregory as a fast, intimidating competitor--one to measure himself against.
Music to get cancer by. Nice. PS Alas, Jo Bonnier was killed while at Le Mans (1972). His Lola collided with an amateur-driven Ferrari and, as a result, flew off-track into trees.
Al drove an MGA that day, in a supporting race. He was already a bit of a legend for his quick, and intelligent driving. His semi pro career came later.
This was a excellent video and these were the hay days of MOSPORT, The racing has really went down hill over the decades and I stopped attending after the American Lemans series ended, the proto types were absolutely horrible after Audi left. Now they call the track Chinese Tire Motorsports Park. What a disgrace to the Historic name of this track. Might as well be called Walmart Motorsport Park as it is a Dam Shame that corporations have to get their name on every thing these days. if example , The Rogers Center or the Budwieser Gardens.
I agree, I have been going to 'Mosport' since 1969, (yes, I'm old) : ) for the Sundown 6hrs @ Canadian Grand Prix and I agree, the quality of racing today at CTMP is not that significant anymore.
