  • Dan says that you just have to know your way around the place, since there's not many landmarks. Chaparral is once again, fast..but fragile (watch Jim catch that thing after the wing fails!! About 10:00 or so). Bruce built his own damn car, too. I suspect that with some development, they'll be pretty quick.
In the end, Surtees gets it done. Stomped on the points chase with both feet after a beautiful move at the start.
And of course, "Glory Days" footage. I suspect the original was ABC WWoS. Apologies that it's not the original copy..but hey!! I was 4yrs old in 1966. Didn't own a videotape machine for another 20yrs. ;)

Wow. Lots of giants of road racing's golden era in this video. Hill, Hall, Surtees, Follmer, Gurney, Stewart, Donohue, Jones...just great all the way through.

+Andy Harman, yeah..that's one of the things that amazes me about that era. So dangerous, but everyone was paid so poorly that they would climb into anything just to get another paycheck. OTOH, I still think a lot of today's drivers would do the same if their teams would let them. Racers gotta race, that's just the way it is. When I had to quit SCCA Improved Touring, I did half a season in a buddy's Quarter Midget just to keep the juices flowing. Hell, it's half the reason I went back to flagging after I got too poor to drive at all. Just have to be around it. Can't leave it behind.

I loved this stuff when I was a kid. Born in 1955. These drivers were my heros.

    ANY LA TIMES '68 69 70 FILM?

this video shows why those races where so fantastic compared with today races. You can see the drivers go four wheels drift all the time driving on the grip limit...so car to car action really don´t matter too much. Glory days no doubt!!! THNKS!

    • @andyharman3022
      @andyharman3022 8 років тому +2

+Diego Grilli Yeah. Wings ruined racing. You could see Jackie Stewart really drifting his car through some of the turns trying to run down Surtees early in the race. But Jackie had mechanical problems and didn't finish.

Agreed. Too much grip can be detrimental to good racing, and it’s a pleasure to watch these old masters conquer cars with horsepower, relatively poor brakes and grip.

Funny how old Jackie Stewart looked in 1966. And he is still alive almost 60 years later.

Justin Davis, I am most certainly looking! I'm a native of the Southern US, and a big Chaparral fan. I've seen the win at Laguna Seca, but can't recall if it was a yootoob vid, or another "Glory Days" episode I had on tape. Rest assured...I'm burning tape & heads like mad looking for the stinking thing!!

It's good to see the comments from those who were there. But we appreciate brilliant racing here in Oxford England and this is just wonderful. Is there anything close to this nowadays?

Beautiful body work big displacement naturally aspirated v8s light weight Can Am cars plus the world's finest drivers what an elegant equation!

The Can Am series was the apex of road racing. It only went down hill from there. I was very lucky to be around during that time

Whole-heartedly agree. I'm an 80's baby, and I just love these oldies!
New-age racing is broken.. I don't know why they still pay humans to drive anymore. I'm sure in the next decade, the human factor will be completely eliminated.

The amount of talent in this race is incredible, with such cool cars too. I know that the Chapparal wings were effective, but they were really awkward looking

It is very strange to see such an open expanse, as now in the 21st Century, the area has been fully developed with upscale houses and retail businesses. A reference point you can use to locate where this racetrack used to be located at: Spanish Trail gated community on West Tropicana, Las Vegas.

I saw a few of the "big-banger" sports car races in the UK in 1965 / 1966, but the fields never had the quality that the Can-Am races attracted, although the Guards Trophy at Brands Hatch in 1965 included the likes of Clark, Surtees, Graham Hill, McLaren, Gurney and Stewart.

    STARDUST, FUCK YEAH!!!!!!!
Too bad they had to close this great track down. Like, I will always wonder if sports car racing would had stayed in Vegas if they would had a real track to race on as opposed to that awful 'roval' at LVMS.......

Randy Dubin , actually kind of blew my mind when they mentioned it was three miles around. I'm fifty-ish, to me..Las Vegas is a F1 race in a parking lot. I love that once upon a time...it *wasn't*.

Simple, uber-cool cars with honkin' V8's. What's not to like???????? We need a series like this today. Cars are rolling computers now and the racing is NO better. Mostly worse.
