  • Dave MacDonald recorded the Shelby King Cobra's first-ever win as he piloted CM/1/63 to victory in the 1963 LA Times Grand Prix at Riverside International Raceway. Race sponsors attracted the world's finest cars and drivers to this event by offering a record purse - including a sparkling new 1964 Pontiac Grand Prix to the winner.
A record 85,000 fans packed the Riverside track to witness So Cal local Dave MacDonald dominate the star-studded international field. Racing champions AJ Foyt, Jimmy Clark, Rodger Ward, Parnelli Jones, Graham Hill, Jim Hall, Pedro Rodriguez, Dan Gurney, Bob Bondurant, John Surtees, Roger Penske, Roy Salvadori, Billy Krause, Dick Thompson, Walt Hansgen, Lloyd Ruby, Augie Pabst, Richie Ginther, Don Wester, Frank Monise, Bob Holbert and more were no match for Dave that day as he won in spectacular fashion - finishing 1+ laps ahead of the entire 31 car field.
1962 Times GP winner Roger Penske (USA) finished 2nd, Pedro Rodriquez (Mexico) 3rd, John Surtees (England) 4th and 1963 World Driving Champion Jimmy Clark (Scotland) rounded out the top 5 in a Lotus.
This was the first win for Shelby’s King Cobras

This is fifty years ago and I'll take this over any type of motor racing we have today.

Look at all these legends of the auto racing world! Sport car driver, MacDonald...just what records that man might have set had he survived the 1964 Indy 500? I think, maybe, he could have ranked up with Mark Donahue and retire well.

Wasn't required so they didn't have it. Not many other cars in the field have one either...

Only if he walked away from that Mickey Thompson car at Indianapolis a year later, he would be alive today.

Thanks for the video! We never got footage of this kind of racing in the Netherlands (was also only 2 years old). I know the track from online racing though. Tricky! The fact that McD knew the tyres would hold is amazing! Those drifts!!!

Dave could have been as legendary a champion as Johnny Rutherford or Bobby Unser, had his luck been better.

WildwoodClaire1 He would have had a great career. His driving reminds me of Keke Rosberg. In a Dirt Champ Car he would have been a natural. He was a Real Racer!

Davey cut his teeth in straight axle Corvettes, as well as an "Old Orange" modified put together by Max Balchowsky (of Ole' Yaller fame). Those torquish beasts had to be thrown through the turns to keep up with the de Dion and IRS Eurocarts. Dave never changed his style and was widely the subject of discussion among other drivers who could =not= understand how he broad-slid these mid-engined cars and got away with it driving- as well as tyre-wise.

It´s beyond me what MacDonald was thinking when he choose to ride this dangerous machine at the Indy 500. He was a great driver and would definitely got another shot at the race in a safer car.

The opening shots must be from early 1962 at the latest. It has Ron Flockhart in a grey shirt 0.03-0.05secs in. He died in 1962 in Australia preparing to race in his Mustang plane from Sydney to London.

Try a cross-reference of the race car numbers with the official race results that can be found on another website. You can Google 1962 Riverside times grand . . . or here is a link:

It was the style of the time. But give Wallen his due: Without him, we'd be piecing mid-century, West Coast racing together like a bunch of archeologists.

Bloqk-16 Chuck Parsons, shown in this race, was the last USRRC champion. That series ended and Can Am began. Great selection of drivers in this 63 event.
