As much as it makes the community groan I always tell people space marines are the single best starting faction in all of 40k. Their models are larger with lots of simple surfaces making first time painting easier. And Space Marines use everything. Shooting, psyker and melee. They are competent in all 3. Although their combat patrol boxes are hilariously terrible valued. Once you figure out what type of fighting you enjoy the most it will give you a good indication toward what faction you will enjoy for your first real army. I also try to deter people from buying Admech or the sisters of battle for their first army because you need a really really deep understanding and experience with the game to actually utilize their very weird playstyles or you're just gonna get steam rolled everytime.
Don't disagree with any of those points at all, there's a reason why they end up being one of the factions in every edition inside the starter boxes. 👍
My buddy, an Aeldari player: Nooo! Don't pick Space Marines, they're for normies!! Me, enjoying an up to date codex, models that are newer than 20 years old, and a good price to points ratio: 🗿
Honestly I don't see why people should groan. I'd argue that playing Space Marines of a sort, not counting Chaos of course, -Is a Rite of Passage. I played Dark Angels at one point during 6th edition, still one of my favorite chapters, and honestly wouldn't mind playing them again if I had to. Once you see everything the game has to offer, you can then look towards other armies or different types of Space Marines even. They're the poster boys, afterall.
The major advantage of Chaos Daemons is going the 'Monster Mash' route which cuts down on the amount of models you'll be making up but the fact that all the greater Daemons are centerpiece models in their own right and thus are going to take some painting...
Very true, should help get them on the board quicker than say a typical 2000 point army. Those greater demons look fantastic too and if the time spent painting a normal force was spent on these, I'm sure many players would get them looking really nice, even if a little intimidating to start with.
I totally agree with this assessment. I hate doing rank and file painting, I just won't do it. But doing a few really detailed character models I absolutely will do, so this is a great choice for some ppl.
Sisters of Battle or Votann would make more sense than Tau. Well, if giving advice to a new player I would first ask them if they plan to stick with only one army or if they're probably going to end up trying multiple. Tau is a decent recommendation if they're the *only* army they'll play, since the skill ceiling is only beaten by Dark Eldar. But if they plan on playing multiple then it's better to steer them towards something else that doesn't have so many synergy, positioning and range-guessing demands as Tau does.
Votann were my alternative option for Tau’s slot in the list, and judging by the comments from tau players it might have been a slightly better option. Hopefully when tau get their new codex in the upcoming months and the kroot reinforcements it might well improve things.
@@TheCommandPhase To be fair, there certainly are forgiving ways to play Tau, especially with Riptides and Fire Warriors. It's harder to master Piranhas, Stealth Suits, Pathfinders, Ghostkeels, Tetras and stuff like that though. And Crisis Suits and Commanders are right in the middle and the most popular too.
Your subscriber count is criminal given the quality and effort in these vids. Keep up to great work! Also I bought the Adeptus Custodes combat patrol prior to watching this as my first so I feel validated :)
The custodes are awesome and I hope you enjoy putting together their combat patrol. Plus with their new codex and a yet to be revealed model coming out soon it’s the perfect time 👍 Thank you, glad you enjoyed it! The channel is only about 6 months old now so I’m pretty happy with the progress, but if you know anyone that would be interested in the content, please feel free to share it 🙂
Adeptus Custodes. After reading about everyone and looking at every model, the Adeptus Custodes just appeal way to much to me at the moment. And I have heard they are not good to play now but thankfully I prefer the painting more than anything else.
To be fair the rules and points change fairly regularly these days so I’m sure it won’t be long until they’re top tier again. I still enjoy mine in their current state (which is still more than competitive against the majority of players) That being said, 100% picking on what you like the most is the most important! Hope you have a great time collecting and painting them up 👍
Returning to this hobby as someone starting with Tau late into 5th edition and played them along side of Dark Angels in 6th. I got the Eldritch Omens set as a way to introduce my brother into 40k since he wanted to play Elfs so Aeldari was his first pick. I wanted to get into Chaos this go around, thinking of doing Thousand Sons since I wanted to play something similar to Grey Knights but was not impressed with how little options they had (At least they were not uber busted like in 5th!), plus you couldn't ally them with a different faction like you could back then. At least with Thousand Sons, you can still use Tzeentch Daemons and Pink Horrors are cool to add to the roster anyway, so I figured I go the Space Egytian for this edition. Plus might have Chaos Marines as a second army in hopes that in later editions they could bring back allies with certain restrictions.
The Thousand Sons do look fantastic though! You can take squads of rubric marines in a Chaos Space Marine, but sadly that's not the same as the old allies rules. CSM are a really cool faction that will play very differently to your Thousand sons, far more melee orientated. Have you gotten Magnus yet?
@@TheCommandPhase No, but it will be a model that I will be getting eventually for 2k point games. The real challenge will be painting Magnus to Show quality as he is a special character. Was thinking of starting with Rubrics of course, some Sorcerers and continue collecting from there. Forgefiend can be used in both CSM and 1K Sons, so I'll paint it in my Tzeentch color scheme along with the Chosen and Warpsmith to get my practice in. From there I'll play the missions from the Eldritch Omens with the CSM and once we get familiar with the rules and start to get to 1k points for my wanted faction, thats when I will switch to Thousand Sons. Same for my brother's Aeldari.
Just recently played my first Warhammer game with a friend's borrowed Space Marine army and I instantly got hooked and started scouring the internet for info on how to get into the hobby. Your videos are great in production quality as well as very informative for someone new to the hobby, thanks for the content and keep up the good work! My friends suggested me to pick up a combat patrol for a faction I like as a starting point, and that's how I ended up watching your video ranking the combat patrols. Not yet sure which one I will pick up, currently deciding between World Eaters or Chaos Space Marines, would like to make a Word Bearers themed army, although I am not sure if that is even possible. It is a shame that the Chaos Demon combat patrol consists of only Khorne demons, I would be interested in making a Slaneeshi focused army, although I have heard that the Emperor's Children should be getting their own army, which would be very cool if that's true.
Awesome, welcome to the hobby! So in terms of the word bearers, you can paint your chaos space marines in any scheme or chapter you like and not be tied down to a specific detachment. Best part of 10th. So if there is a detachment in the upcoming chaos codex you’d like to use, your army scheme won’t stop you like it would have in previous editions. The newer possessed kits/ accursed cultists and dark commune are great for a word bearers theme. Or if you can find the old start collecting box/shadowspear half it’s pretty much perfect. (Might well be a very hard find) But if you’re playing combat patrol games to start the chaos box is a nice start and a dark apostle is definitely on theme for word bearers 👍 Emperors children are rumoured to be coming this edition, but as there are another 2 years to go it could be a long wait. Thankfully with demons the kits are slightly cheaper, and you might be able to come across one of the older start collecting boxes for slaanesh (might be a hunt on eBay/Facebook marketplace) I’d certainly pick what you’d like the most though. Glad you enjoyed the videos 🙂
I have wanteed to get into this for decades but there were always other expenses standing in the way. I've spent years getting out of debt and finally did it. I start a new job in the next few weeks and I decided I am going to finally start playing this game. I'm just trying to figure out where to start, and this video is my starting point. Wish me luck.
Best of luck on your journey - I hope you have a fantastic time collecting. If you have any questions please feel free to reach out and I'd be happy to help!
Massive hot take incoming but I think guard can be a great starter army. If you use proxies for the infantry they can actually be relatively cheap, and while it can take a while to get an army in the table, the play style is super fun and teaches you how to screen and take objectives.
It's certainly not a bad choice at all - plus as another viewer had mentioned previously, everyone will know what each model/unit is without too much trouble as they resemble similar things to our current military.
I think the OG big 4 (Space Marines, CSM, Aeldari (Eldar) and Orks) are just the best for starting as they have the most diverse range which allows new players to experience all facets (shooting, melee, movement, infantry, vehicles, monsters, different weapon types) with the differences being IMO the most important gameplay difference which is army style (horde, elite, tanky, glass cannon). From there players can see what they like about the game and either expand their current army or chose to build a second army that’s more focused (Tau, WE, Guard etc). Tyranids can be good but probably for the players who’ve come from other tabletop miniatures games as board control, deployment and building are key units to help your lesser units is a more advanced skill IMO. But also pick the army that has the coolest models or the sickest lore
I got the Leviathan box, first time table topper figured would be cool to start here that way I can try to bring in family and friends with two combat patrols. Now that I got them and built them, I'm debating if Gork and Mork are giving me brutal kunnin' because I'm getting the itch that I want an Ork army. Hopefully tomorrow they release some new stuff that pushes me into them quicker.
Having two combat patrols available to have it like a small board game to get friends and family interested is a cool way of going about it. Although I’m sure Gork and Mork have some very interesting things coming to sway you, I love my orks also I’m a tad biased 😂
Got my first immortals about a week ago and I'm almost done painting them! super excited to start a Necron army, especially after finishing Infinite and the Divine as well as the first Twice Dead king book! All hail the Infinite Empire!
@@TheCommandPhase Not entirely sure. I was thinking that since I am trying to paint my Immortals in the same style as those in Twice Dead King, I might get a Tachyon Arrow Overlord and try to make an Oltyx Overlord.
I just started and i chose chaos knights! I didnt need a ton of models and every phase is simple since all my units are just 1 model. Challenging to build and magnetize and painting is easy(bigger canvas)
As other people have said, the high production value in these is impressive. You should have wayyy more subs/views not just imo thats facts. Keep up the great work!
Thank you for your kind words! The channel under a year old so I’m really pleased with how well it’s doing. Comments like these and people watching and sharing make a huge difference 🙂
Been a fan for over a year and I did buy some Tyranids to start, mainly cause that’s what caught my attention. But as I kept getting deeper into the lore the more I started loving the Custodes and now have a few models of them…….im not sure who to side with anymore XD
That’s awesome to hear! Nothing wrong at all with collecting two armies - I mean I dread to think the number I’m collecting. They are both fantastic forces and I hope you’re having a great time collecting them 👍
Was initially drawn to the game just for the detailed minis and prospect of painting but have become curious about actually playing. Watched several of your amazing videos … several times … and landed on Elite Edition Starter set with Space Marines and Necrons.
I used the Rule of Cool tempered by ease of entry for painting. Having watched your videos and several others Space Marines seemed like a safe choice but also liked the Necrons so in this box I didn’t have to choose. Also, I can jump right into play with two armies.
I made Drukhari my first and main army. While Drukhari wont be in any top 5 easiest armies to start with, it has kept me entertained for 4 years and 800+ hours. Would recommend
That’s awesome and when I returned to 40K a few years back with the Drukhari range refresh I picked them because they looked the coolest. So totally can see where you’re coming from! Glad they’ve been a great choice for you all this time 👍
I really appreciate the info you provide. Already watched a few of your videos this morning, and after weeks of wondering whether or not I'd get into Warhammer 40k, I finally felt ready to take the plunge. Ordered the Ultimate Starter Set this afternoon. I can't wait to break it open and get to work on that plastic.
Thank you for commenting. I’m really glad to hear my videos have been of help , it mean a lot to hear that! Hope you have a fantastic time getting into the hobby with that starter set - any ideas on colour schemes you’re going to try for the two forces?
@TheCommandPhase To be honest, I love the looks of the Ultramarines. I've been a big fan of the contrast between blue/gold/white. I'm not sure about the Tyranids yet. Hive Fleet Leviathan I like for the simple purple/white contrast. But Tyranids just feel more customizable to me. I have seen a lot of custom color themes. I was kinda thinking about an arctic theme for them. I remember reading some lore where the Imperium discovered Tyranids hibernating in the ice of the planet, and I thought that was pretty neat. Since they're whole thing is improvise, adapt, and overcome. Any suggestions?
Oh that sounds like a fun scheme - something like Hive Fleet Tiamet might work for that. A good painting guide to use as a reference can be found here: eavy-archive.com/40k/tyranids/ Really great resource!
@TheCommandPhase Hive Fleet Tiamet actually looks a lot like what I had in mind. Thanks for the suggestion. Really need lore behind them, too. Real mysterious. Maybe they get the limelight after Leviathan.
Controversially, I don’t think World Eaters are actually that easy to play (albeit definitely rewarding, and totally agree on value and the fun painting - the berzerkers are fabulous sculpts).
Being a full melee force, in this edition is certainly not the easiest place to be, like you mentioned. I do think though that it'll help them learn to use the board as effectively as possible a lot faster than some other armies, which would certainly help in the long run. Thanks for the comment 🙂
As someone who just started in 10th edition with world eaters I find them decently intuitive, like yes I lose a lot because I can't get into range properly, but it's always clear cut what I did wrong and how to avoid it, it's been a pretty rewarding learningproces
Pretty reasonable list, I firmly agree with the wildcard choice. But I think that custodes while cheaper have too much going on for new players. Votann on the other hand are also a small range but with less rules flipping.
@MillDewd welcome, Phaeron. Enjoy it, lol. Some of the kits are perfectly fine, there's a bunch though (Flayed Ones, Illiminor Szeras, the Silent King, Tomb Blades, Pychomancer, Lychgaurd, Ghost ark, etc) that can be quite annoying
Not me starting with Sisters, learning 40k with Sisters and learning them too, and now not wanting to ever play anything else except Sisters... Never, couldn´t be me.
I’m usually pretty hesitant to recommend chaos demons since for the most part they’re pretty high skill floor for newer players. Of course if they want to play it I support them but I wouldn’t go out of my way to recommend the faction.
That's fair enough, while from the games I've played in my playgroup my friend has been really enjoying their playstyle - I can see piloting them to a higher level, like many armies, being pretty challenging.
This video was so helpful! As have been your others which I’ve saved onto a playlist and continue to watch over and over. I am a beginner to Warhammer only got into it maybe a week or two ago. Still trying to decide on an actual army to use for my first one.
I’m glad I’ve been a help to you and means a lot that you’ve been using my content for reference. If you have any further questions please feel free to reach out. I’d be more than happy to help 👍 You’re in a great position of having the excitement of exploring the game through fresh eyes. Do you have any that you’re deciding between?
@@TheCommandPhasecurrently I am looking at Space Marines T’au Necrons Imperial Guard I like the lore of them all and have somewhat of a cool theme idea for them but I don’t know which one for someone who’s never played is optimal and won’t overload my brain 😂
@alphatrooper1643 honestly out of those the two I’d say would be the “easiest” would be space marines for sure followed by necrons. The thing is, your excitement for the army will carry you through the learning experience so I wouldn’t worry too much about any of those four. 🙂
@@TheCommandPhaseNecrons and Space Marines. Okay I’ll deffo have to go more into research on which of those I’ll choose! Thank you! I’ll have to update you on progress as I’m wanting to be more of a casual have fun get models I like the look of, more than buy what’s competitive. I want to have a fully painted army that I can look at on a battlefield and go “This may not win all the time but each model I chose is because I like them and it fits my paint scheme and theme”
Honestly that’s the best way to be, rules and how good models are change fairly regularly so I wouldn’t worry too much about that side of things. Hope you have fun collecting and look forward to hearing how you get on 👍
@@TheCommandPhase I have a few favorite characters from different chapters. Tyberos, Mephiston, Logan Grimnar, Leman Russ, Jaghatai Khan, Asterion Moloc I have recently gotten into the lore and these are the characters that I like
Hey, I’m about to buy a starter set, but am confused if I wanna play the Astartes as Ultramarines or Raven Guard. Both speak to me, and I will probably be playing gladius task force (until I get some intercessors) to play vanguard spearhead. Should I stick to ultramarines or go for Raven guard?
So all of the space marine detachments are free to use, your colour scheme doesn’t lock you into playing as only one which is great. So realistically it’s a case of which colour scheme would you prefer to paint/like the lore of the chapter the most 👍
@@TheCommandPhaseRaven guard it is, but I’ll add a bunch of maccrage (no idea how u spell it) blue to it to make their colour scheme look better Thanks!
As a tau player who started with tau, tau is a terrible starting army. We are fragile which means mispositioning is punishing. We have no melee which means you're not going to get to really learn half the game You have to be a bit of a rule stickler as your fragile, no melee mature means that we get punished even harder if we don't know rules around terrain, charging, etc. No way to get someone off a point if they're in a first floor blocking ruin. Anti tank so bad that our army had to go down 30% in points just ti be playable. One of the most expensive armies to collect up to 2000 points as our units are priced poorly and our combat patrol isn't very many points.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this, I'm sure it'll be helpful for a new player to see this if thinking about tau. I do hope the new codex helps to put the army in a better place for you, that and the kroot help to plug the game in some areas. I know I'm excited for them! My aim was to give a pure combat and pure shooting option in this list as I don't necessarily see a one phase army being a big problem starting out, mainly to allow you more time to think and plan out your moves. That and a fair number of people often prefer that kind of playstyle. But in terms of other pure shooting forces, Votann were close (albeit do have some combat potential), but I certainly wasn't going to recommend Ad-mech! (Bless them, one day GW will fix them)
@@TheCommandPhase if I were to recommend a shooting army it would he votann actually. The smaller size collection means it's easier to have a full set, their terminators have some melee, and they have bezerks. I think this spot could have also been filled with nids as they are a "every phase army" by design, even when we have the psychic phase. A shooting army (in my mind) isn't ONLY shooting, it's "best at shooting".
After my first game playing a borrowed Eldar army around 2002, not sure what the edition was I know the dice gods are NOT in my favor (hehe 4 rounds, 2up to hit, never did, that fire prism was worth a good laugh though). Still thinking going back to CSM which was my first army , but the Sisters are singing their siren song.
Both CSM and Sisters are fantastic forces and as they both have their codex out, it means you have a nice amount of list building variety. Plus the majority of the kits are fairly recent - still some very old stragglers, but either way you should have great fun with whichever you collect. (I have both myself as I have no self control! xD )
Any models in particular you really want to pick up and paint? My problem is I just keep buying, building and then jumping onto other projects, so nothing really ever gets done 😂 Glad you enjoyed it!
They would be my alternative choice for a shooting army, that has a little combat also and a tad more resilient. I#m currently working through my Votann army at the moment and I really enjoy these little guys. Hopefully the second phase of models will really add to them. That being said, the new Kroot look incredible for Tau players and I'm sure you'll be excited for them!
if you want to just sit back and shoot down models go with Aeldari as many dark reapers and wraithlords and rangers as can take and use guardians and such as bait
@@TheCommandPhase I really like the death guard space Marines but not hugely massive fan of the demons that come with that faction haha unless it's possible to build an army with just plague Marines? Second favorite are the necrons, love that Terminator look 👌
So while that is part of the hobby, I’m sure you’d could find people to play with that wouldn’t care as much about fully painted armies. I mean there are really quick and easy ways to paint them to a tabletop standard to get playing faster. That being said, you can play online using tabletop simulator if you wanted to play games without building/painting the minis.
I'm surprised you skipped Orks with the advantages they have. Painting is super easy because even a bad paint job looks great. Fighting is very simple for Orks, they only want to melee, get suck in! Lastly, they have the best color, green! What more could you want? :D WWWWAAAAUUUUGGGHHHH!
Don't get me wrong, I love the Orks - they are one of my favourite armies that I own. I just feel they are a better second army than first, due to the love and attention to kitbashing/modelling side that can be done to really make them your own. Plus for a new player it's an awful lot of models (potentially) to paint up, which was one of the reasons I left Nids off the list, even though as an organic form and contrast/speed paints has made that a lot easier to do. That being said, I'll never tell someone not to collect them if the do decide it's the army for them. Coz Orks is Best!
My first army was Necrons why? Friend was getting rid of his stuff and I got about 1000 points of models for £40/$50 (Doom Scythe, 3 tomb blades, 12 immortals, 20 warriors, Doomstalker, Royal warden, Overlord, 10 Lynchguard, Nemassor Zandrek, Vanguard Oberon and Trazyn the infinite) Plus… Trazyn and Zandrek are my favourite 40K characters, so that was a bonus
That's an incredible deal! Hope you have an awesome time collecting them and that's great you have some of your favourite characters too - that always helps add to the enjoyment of an army :)
I was a bit (extremely) annoyed that Zandrek and Oberon aren’t in tabletop anymore, though. That being said, it’s gotten fairly substantial… and I really grown to love my colour scheme… They’re all based on the OG War of The Worlds book from the 20s, so Brass, Gold, Silver and blue
Thx for the video, im new player. The armies that like me is WE, chaos marines and orks. But its impossible to me to select one. 7 years ago my uncle gave me so much miniaturas of orks. And i don know if is a good idea finally this army or join chaos. I LOVE the stetic of chaos, but im so undecided. Sorry for my English.
No need to apologise! Both chaos and orks are great armies and you would have loads of fun collecting them. Orks are just getting their new codex in a couple weeks for this edition and chaos won’t be far after so both will have up to date rules, which certainly helps a lot. Honestly I’d pick whichever models you like the models for the most and if you can’t decide, try picking up a model from each, then build and paint it up to see which you’d prefer to make an entire army of 👍
@@TheCommandPhase Admech, Krieg, Death Guard, TSons, Knights, Black Templars, and Votaan. My PayPal credit really hated me for awhile lol. I had to stop. Obsessive personality had me off the deep end and I guess I could technically say 8 because I got the deathwing box but those are going BT. Pile of shame is obviously huge too. I absolutely love the aesthetic of Admech, Krieg and DG. TSons are gonna be a bear to paint.
If it's any consolation my pile of potential is also rather huge with 6 armies (possibly more) half done, because I'm a hobby magpie and jumping from one cool thing to another. I guess it depends on how you decide to paint up the thousand sons, but the trim on chaos isn't the most fun to do. Looks great afterwards though!
@@TheCommandPhase haven't started the painting process there but I'm going with a black and gold setup with blue accents. Gonna call the chapter the sons of Anubis
As a starting point for any 40K player, I’d recommend kill team as a gateway. Not only is it a fantastic game, but allows you to dip your toes into a faction without spending too much to see if you enjoy the hobbling side of them.
I think a pink/purple hue tau army would look pretty cool tbh! The way I tend to find inspiration for a colour scheme is generally on Instagram or even Pinterest can be somewhat helpful. Even if you don’t find something specifically tau, the colour follower by Warhammer 40K will generally find you a lot of images in instagram. In terms of the painting, honestly don’t worry too much if possible. You can always paint over it if you keep the paints pretty thin and it doesn’t turn out how you’d like. Or there are ways to strip the paint off without damaging the model worst case scenario. I’d certainly do a test single model for the full scheme just to see if you like it before doing the rest of them. That way you can see what works and what steps you could avoid next time. Or if you have a games workshop near you, they often do a free model of the month you could practice on first if you’d prefer to. Hope you enjoy the tau 🙂
For your first unit dont worry about messing it up. Tau was mine and its hard as fuck to paint. Youre going to make mistakes youre going to hate it. Its ok its part of the game. Start wuth your primers get your base and take it slow. Just buy more as you upgrade yojr levels
Went to my local store to buy world eaters....for some reason i come out with death guard, I just loved the look of them but my son has told me i will be useless in battle now 😞
Not at all - the Death guard are a great army and with all the balance updates that GW put out the game hasn't been in a better state for quite some time. You'll certainly be competitive in game so I wouldn't worry about that. Plus they are a great faction with so much character in their models, so I can see why you'd pick them up!
@TheCommandPhase you said exactly what I needed to hear 😅. My plan is to build the army out while also watching 'how to play' videos on them so when I get to the work shop and battle my son I will hopefully cause his dark templar's to rot and decay!
Admech is the best army for new player. If they can tolerate a terrible builds and details. Paying out extremely over cost kits. And getting curve stomp with their horrible rule and fragility. They can pretty much move on to play any war games. 😂😂😂
They’re fantastic and a really fun army. I needed to make some cuts to reduce the list down, but 100% the Orkz would have been next. Plus if they’re the army that you really like and want to play definitely go for it. You’re enjoyment will help learning rules and playing games a lot more fun. 👍
Not at all unless you want to play ultramarines. There are plenty of shooting armies out there that'll satisfy that itch. Votann are a pretty good option if you wanted to be resilient like marines, but have a loot of good shooting options and tanks. Else other main shooting forces are Astra Militarum, Tau, Aeldari/Drukhari (both have builds you can do), Iron Hands detachment in marines (you can paint them any colour you'd like so whichever chapter you prefer), Thousand sons (granted thats more magic shooting than typical shooting) and a fair few more really. It's really down to which army you like the look of the most and for the vast majority there will be a playstyle for you.
I’m playing craftworld aeldari. I’ve bought and painted the combat patrol and want to eventually start building my 2000pt army, but I don’t really know what I want my final army to consist of. Any suggestions on a good aeldari army?
Awesome - aeldari are in a pretty good place right now, although I'll always tend to say pick the units you like the look of the most for an army/want to paint up. That being said, so units that may well complement your current force well would be - shroud runners/rangers/swooping hawks for some more speed and ranged attacks, an autarch as another leader, then depending on which way you'd like to go with your army you have all of the aspect warriors like howling banshees, striking scorpions, warp spiders and fire dragons with the latter two being pretty good right now, or could include some vehicles like vypers/war walkers/falcons or fire prisms. Or if you wanted to play some more resilient units you always have the wraithguard to complement your knight in the box. It really does depend on what style of army you like and how you'd like to play. The rules and points can be changed fairly regularly so what is good right now may not be in a few months time. So going back to what you like the most is far more important :)
Awesome! I’m thinking of doing some more bikes for speed as well as a waithknight, wraith guard, and fire prisms in addition to some other stuff. Is the wraithknight worth the investment? Or should I do wraithlords?
I’d potentially look at mixing up your options to give your list building some flexibility. Plus they offer a different use type to your army than a Wraithknight would. That being said, if you’re liking how the wraith knight is performing on the tabletop and want another one then obviously go for it 👍
Ok! I’ve got a list! I need your opinion! Farseer Fuegan Solitaire Autark wayleaper Spiritseer 1 squad of wraithguard 1 squad of swooping hawks 2 squads of warp spiders A nightspinner 2 fire prisms 1 squad of shadow specters Wraithknight If I’m not mistaken, that comes out to 1970 points. What do you think?
@everettcolby8976 looks like a really fun list to get started with. Plenty of fast morning troops for objectives. Nice amount of firepower and the spiritseer wraithguard combo will help with claiming the middle objective. Certainly something to aim for and then if you feel like you need some other units, like d-cannons in there instead of a falcon or more troops/bikes potentially for objectives/secondaries then you’ve got a great base to work from. You’ll have to join the discord and share pictures with me of how you’re getting on. Would be great to see this force grow 🙂
To be fair I’m over the moon I’ve reached this many subs so far! Maybe one day it’ll be a lot higher, but I’m really enjoying the process - plus people watching and commenting things like this really do help drive me on, so thank you :)
Good luck my friend, they're really cool and as Command Phase says, you have the best value combat patrol out of anyone currently but painting and assembling is...yeah just good luck. I'm starting with Astra Militarum which, currently, doesn't focus too much around big infantry blobs or battleline so...I only need 20 Kriegers, 8 basic infantry and 1 platoon command squad for my list...however it also means I'm spending money on tanks and bullgryns...
@@luketfer Thanks. I guess i will need luck. Practicing painting with my Kill-Team Starter-Box. It's clear, my GSC will not look good, with my level of experience. But i'll give my best and will become better over time.
Honestly? You might be happy to do this NOW than in a couple of months time. The current Combat Patrol for GSC is amazing - three boxes basically get you to 2000 points, and it is not a bad list. With the next codex this box will... just disappear. So right now you have an actually affordable way to get a sizable GSC army, but this will not last much longer. Also: GSC do not have to be a painting nightmare. The models are detailed, yes. But they are also meant to be a ragtag bunch of misfits, so some dirty colours or a simple scheme with drybrushing and washes works just fine. Just get painting, you WILL see yourself getting better over time. Most important of all: have fun with this!
Practice will only improve things so I wouldn’t worry at all about that. It’s a learning experience after all and I’m sure by the time you get to say 2000 points you’ll have plenty you are really proud of 🙂
So the harlequins sit in the Aeldari index now so it is perfectly possible to put together a harlequins force from that. All of the units are there for her to choose from 👍 My guess will be when Aeldari get their own codex it’ll get a dedicated detachment of their own, but that’s just for playstyle rather than being forced into. Then it’s deciding on which units she’d like to use or potentially starting her off on kill team as they Quinns are actually pretty good to get started with playing while she builds and paints up a force. Sadly no combat patrol, but she can always mix and match units from the Aeldari forces into it. Hope that’s some help 👍
They sure are, there is a specific detachment that is meant to be like the iron warriors, but you don’t have to use that. You can use any detachment from the chaos space marine book you’d like as the colour scheme is a more aesthetic choice. As for whether they are inferior to primaris, not at all. CSM had a stat boost fairly recently (9th I think) to match up. So the only difference is now unit types more than stats. A primaris intercessor and chaos legionary have identical stats for example 👍
I am new don't an army yet my choice might be a hard one to start with , Orks are my dream army already made a name and a backstory for them i know they must be hell to paint , not very competitive (from what i heard ) and expensive to collect but i can't help it the WAAAAAAGH!! calls and i must answer , any tips would be welcomed
Hey - thanks for the message and welcome to the hobby! So in terms of Orks, please don’t be put off by them at all - they are a fantastic faction, lots of awesome sculpts and character and a brand new codex just around the corner too which will add a lot of variety to list building going forward in 10th. Things to note from your comment - don’t worry about how “competitive” the faction is right now. The rules change and so do points values and the meta - so what is ok now could be great in the future and vice versa. The vast majority of armies are pretty expensive, that’s just GW in a nutshell, but as I mentioned in a recent video there are loads of different ways to save money collecting this hobby. And in terms of the painting side of things, they won’t be anywhere near as bad as you may think. There are loads of ways to paint them up fairly easily with contrast paints and such. Plus weathering on them looks amazing and can hide a multitude of sins too! I certainly wouldn’t say they are one of the hardest factions out there to paint, that’s for sure! For a starting point, the combat patrol is pretty good - or if you prefer the look of the beast snagga’s there has been a Christmas box which is great value or potentially on eBay/facebook maketplace you might get lucky with an older army box. The other option really is to pick up the Kommando’s kill team kit. They are great in game and also allows you to play Kill Team while you build your force, plus you can see how the modelling and painting goes without spending a lot of money up front. We may find the combat patrol box changes once the ork release comes in the next month or so, which may well provide a better or worse option than the current one - so could be worth waiting to see what it might be. Hopefully that was of some help - but I would 1000% say stick with Orks - you’ll have a fantastic time and learn a lot about the hobbling, kitbashing and so on as you go! Remember Orks iz best!
@@TheCommandPhase thank you for your time mate , your info is most welcomed ,i will stick to the channel for more and the mighty WAAAAGH of boss Borbaz Bludhamma! and the Gouged eye clan will soon be unleashed upon the galaxy
Which of these do you like the look/feel of the models the most of the three? Rules do end up changing as editions go on alonside the balance passes throughout, so I wouldn't worry too much about that in the army choice. Personally I would still recommend Orks or Necrons over Ad Mech as hobby wise they're easier to work with and pretty forgiving on the tabletop. But if you would prefer to play ad mech as you think they are the coolest of the lot, that is all that matters 👍
They are both iconic factions and honestly it probably comes down to whether you’d want to be more melee or shooting as a force. A potentially good idea to see which you’d prefer to paint up a whole force of is the kill team starter set. You get Ork Kommandos (which is a great kit) and the Krieg guardsmen plus the rules to play a really fun skirmish game while you build your chosen force at a discount. Especially from a 3rd party stockist.
Hmm, I have brought a few people into the hobby over the years and I have to say, I disagree on quite a bit here. World Eaters only play one phase, but they arent easy, especially if you dont know what you're doing. And additionally, they offer no variety in terms of playstyle so once you get frustrated because people keep shooting you off the board, there is nothing else to do other than improve... or leave the hobby/faction. And Guard should be on the list at least next to T'au. They offer kind of a similar playstyle and while Xenos are cool, everyone will have a grasp on what the Guard units do and how they play so starting/remembering gets a little easier (and the 2nd hand market is a lot bigger there, which more than compensates for the more hordy faction).
I've started with Death Guard because my friend gifted me the combat patrol and I got another 1000 pts very cheap on FB. Spending a lot of time testing out shades of green!
Thanks! Orks is certainly da best! I love mine, but the sheer volume of miniatures was a bit offputting for new players, although you can be pretty messy with the weathered looks of painting and kitbashing. 100% a great pick as a second army when you are more into the game and hobbying your really do them justice.
100%, that makes a big difference through the course of an edition.
Groan
Jk jk sorry I had to
Honestly I don't see why people should groan.
Started 40k with Tau and then moved on to World Eaters. Loved the style and gimmick of both and the contrast between the two is funny.
Actually a pretty awesome combination of armies there to get a really well rounded understanding of the game. Plus they look great too!
Plus with their new codex and a yet to be revealed model coming out soon it’s the perfect time 👍
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
(Might well be a very hard find)
But if you’re playing combat patrol games to start the chaos box is a nice start and a dark apostle is definitely on theme for word bearers 👍
Emperors children are rumoured to be coming this edition, but as there are another 2 years to go it could be a long wait. Thankfully with demons the kits are slightly cheaper, and you might be able to come across one of the older start collecting boxes for slaanesh (might be a hunt on eBay/Facebook marketplace)
I’d certainly pick what you’d like the most though.
But also pick the army that has the coolest models or the sickest lore
haha classic film insert mate, one of my fav! Great video buddy!
Thank you! It’s rather depressing that film is 17 years old now.. so so good though!
@@TheCommandPhase Man i feel old now haha
Waaaaagggghhhh!!!
Got my first immortals about a week ago and I'm almost done painting them! super excited to start a Necron army, especially after finishing Infinite and the Divine as well as the first Twice Dead king book! All hail the Infinite Empire!
Awesome stuff - what are you planning on picking up next once they are done?
Awesome stuff bud - welcome to the hobby! Was it the marines or necrons that drew you to that box?
Both!
Perfect box then!
Glad they’ve been a great choice for you all this time 👍
Having played third and fourth as tyranids and chaos. I have returned as a noob, going with DA
Welcome back to the hobby! I hope you enjoy your Dark Angels 👍
A good painting guide to use as a reference can be found here: eavy-archive.com/40k/tyranids/
Really great resource!
I'll dive in this wonderful hobby for the first time with chaos space marines
Awesome stuff! And with the codex not being too far away it’s a great time to get started. Hope you enjoy 🙂
Pretty reasonable list, I firmly agree with the wildcard choice. But I think that custodes while cheaper have too much going on for new players. Votann on the other hand are also a small range but with less rules flipping.
I’m a huge fan of Votann and they definitely would have made the list if there was another slot.
@@TheCommandPhase For the Rock and Stone
Agree with almost everything here except the "necrons are very easy to build..." part lol
I am about to find out.
@ I suspect a little annoying will be part of the fun for me.
Not me starting with Sisters, learning 40k with Sisters and learning them too, and now not wanting to ever play anything else except Sisters... Never, couldn´t be me.
They are a gorgeous looking force and I don't blame you for sticking with them. As soon as their range refresh came out I had to buy them all!
I’d be more than happy to help 👍
You’re in a great position of having the excitement of exploring the game through fresh eyes. Do you have any that you’re deciding between?
@@TheCommandPhasecurrently I am looking at
Space Marines
T’au
Necrons
Imperial Guard
I like the lore of them all and have somewhat of a cool theme idea for them but I don’t know which one for someone who’s never played is optimal and won’t overload my brain 😂
Hope you have fun collecting and look forward to hearing how you get on 👍
My buddy got me into the lore first and now im trying to figure out which army to build first
Do you have a favourite army/character from the lore or model ranges?
@@TheCommandPhase I have a few favorite characters from different chapters. Tyberos, Mephiston, Logan Grimnar, Leman Russ, Jaghatai Khan, Asterion Moloc I have recently gotten into the lore and these are the characters that I like
I am an idiot and started 2 at the start of 10th edition, T'au and my home brew space marines, i may be slightly insane
Not any more insane than the rest of us! xD
So realistically it’s a case of which colour scheme would you prefer to paint/like the lore of the chapter the most 👍
@@TheCommandPhaseRaven guard it is, but I’ll add a bunch of maccrage (no idea how u spell it) blue to it to make their colour scheme look better
Thanks!
@booksareOP you’ll have to show me when you’ve painting some up 👍
@@TheCommandPhase I will probably get the starter set by the end of the month, so hopefully I will!
As a tau player who started with tau, tau is a terrible starting army.
We are fragile which means mispositioning is punishing.
We have no melee which means you're not going to get to really learn half the game
You have to be a bit of a rule stickler as your fragile, no melee mature means that we get punished even harder if we don't know rules around terrain, charging, etc.
(I have both myself as I have no self control! xD )
I would love to paint and collect most of these, I just can't stick to one project. :'( Great video again!
Any models in particular you really want to pick up and paint? My problem is I just keep buying, building and then jumping onto other projects, so nothing really ever gets done 😂 Glad you enjoyed it!
@@TheCommandPhase I am the exact same. I have been working on the SM combat patrol since Leviathan came out, nowhere near finished. 🤦
I was thinking of getting started with Black Templar
Fantastic chapter of the Space Marines and have a lot of great units too - hope you have a great time collecting them!
I started in tau but votann looks amazing as well.
That does sound like a pretty good shooting list what I wouldn’t want to come up against!
I rounded my own list down to necrons, world eaters, tau and death guard. I was hoping your video would help me single one out but yeah 😂😅
Which faction do you like the models of the most?
@@TheCommandPhase I really like the death guard space Marines but not hugely massive fan of the demons that come with that faction haha unless it's possible to build an army with just plague Marines? Second favorite are the necrons, love that Terminator look 👌
I don’t care about painting minis, but I’m interested in the game. Is it really mandatory to paint the minis?
Orcs seem simple, but if you want to win tournaments with them, it's not so simple.
My first army was Necrons why?
Friend was getting rid of his stuff and I got about 1000 points of models for £40/$50 (Doom Scythe, 3 tomb blades, 12 immortals, 20 warriors, Doomstalker, Royal warden, Overlord, 10 Lynchguard, Nemassor Zandrek, Vanguard Oberon and Trazyn the infinite)
Plus… Trazyn and Zandrek are my favourite 40K characters, so that was a bonus
There was also 3 Skorpenok Destryers, as well
That's an incredible deal! Hope you have an awesome time collecting them and that's great you have some of your favourite characters too - that always helps add to the enjoyment of an army :)
I was a bit (extremely) annoyed that Zandrek and Oberon aren’t in tabletop anymore, though.
That being said, it’s gotten fairly substantial… and I really grown to love my colour scheme…
They’re all based on the OG War of The Worlds book from the 20s, so Brass, Gold, Silver and blue
Sounds like an awesome scheme!
Honestly I’d pick whichever models you like the models for the most and if you can’t decide, try picking up a model from each, then build and paint it up to see which you’d prefer to make an entire army of 👍
Great videos and structure as usual, keep em coming!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
Couldn't decide. Got Admech first. Then ended up with 7 armies in a year.....
Your poor wallet... Hope you managed to find a few that you really enjoy from that 7.
@kamakazi339 oh I like that!
Absolute best beginner army is KILL TEAM!
As a starting point for any 40K player, I’d recommend kill team as a gateway. Not only is it a fantastic game, but allows you to dip your toes into a faction without spending too much to see if you enjoy the hobbling side of them.
I want start with the Tau the only thing missing is the colour scheme, i want some pinkish but its hard and scared that i mess up the painting
Best of luck to you! Hope you have a fantastic time collecting and 🤞you beat him!
Admech is the best army for new player. If they can tolerate a terrible builds and details. Paying out extremely over cost kits. And getting curve stomp with their horrible rule and fragility. They can pretty much move on to play any war games. 😂😂😂
I mean that’s one way of looking at it 😂
I really was hoping the boys would be on here. Any opinions on Greenskins?!
They’re fantastic and a really fun army. I needed to make some cuts to reduce the list down, but 100% the Orkz would have been next. Plus if they’re the army that you really like and want to play definitely go for it. You’re enjoyment will help learning rules and playing games a lot more fun. 👍
Love custodes but I'm a shooty boy. Need my pew pew. Am I doomed to playing Ultras?
Farseer
Fuegan
Solitaire
Autark wayleaper
Spiritseer
1 squad of wraithguard
1 squad of swooping hawks
2 squads of warp spiders
A nightspinner
2 fire prisms
1 squad of shadow specters
Wraithknight
If I’m not mistaken, that comes out to 1970 points.
36K Videos but only 6K Subscribers. My man is being robbed
To be fair I’m over the moon I’ve reached this many subs so far! Maybe one day it’ll be a lot higher, but I’m really enjoying the process - plus people watching and commenting things like this really do help drive me on, so thank you :)
Me: starts with GSC right now😱
They are a really cool army and that combat patrol is incredible value for money. I hope you enjoy them 👍
Good luck my friend, they're really cool and as Command Phase says, you have the best value combat patrol out of anyone currently but painting and assembling is...yeah just good luck.
It’s a learning experience after all and I’m sure by the time you get to say 2000 points you’ll have plenty you are really proud of 🙂
Thank you for the informative video 😄
No problem at all - glad you found it useful!
I tried to get my gf into 40k, but she wants to play Harlequins, pretty sure they're not even an army now? how would i go about helping her start?
So the harlequins sit in the Aeldari index now so it is perfectly possible to put together a harlequins force from that. All of the units are there for her to choose from 👍
My guess will be when Aeldari get their own codex it’ll get a dedicated detachment of their own, but that’s just for playstyle rather than being forced into.
@TheCommandPhase thanks a ton, i had no idea they were a option in kill team, i think the small scale will be ideal for her to start. Cheers!
Are chaos iron warriors relevant, and are chaos space marines inferior to primaris?
They sure are, there is a specific detachment that is meant to be like the iron warriors, but you don’t have to use that. You can use any detachment from the chaos space marine book you’d like as the colour scheme is a more aesthetic choice.
As for whether they are inferior to primaris, not at all. CSM had a stat boost fairly recently (9th I think) to match up. So the only difference is now unit types more than stats. A primaris intercessor and chaos legionary have identical stats for example 👍
@@TheCommandPhase Thanks for the invaluable insight.
No problem at all 👍
I am new don't an army yet my choice might be a hard one to start with , Orks are my dream army
already made a name and a backstory for them
i know they must be hell to paint , not very competitive (from what i heard ) and expensive to collect
but i can't help it the WAAAAAAGH!! calls and i must answer , any tips would be welcomed
@Garruk_80 No problem at all - I can’t wait to see what your ork army ends up looking like!
Can someone answer me this. What are Grey Knights? Astartes or Custodes
They are chapter of the Astartes, albeit secretive one whose main purpose is to fight chaos.
I'm torn between the admech, necrons and orks
Which of these do you like the look/feel of the models the most of the three?
Rules do end up changing as editions go on alonside the balance passes throughout, so I wouldn't worry too much about that in the army choice. Personally I would still recommend Orks or Necrons over Ad Mech as hobby wise they're easier to work with and pretty forgiving on the tabletop. But if you would prefer to play ad mech as you think they are the coolest of the lot, that is all that matters 👍
Just play what you find looks cool. The rules will be changed to your army before you even finish building it.
Those high pitched squeaks between each slide are really annoying on studio monitors.
Orks or Krieg - can't make up my mind.
I already picked tyranids
Don't blame you at all, they're a fantastic army and loads of amazing new models too!
@@TheCommandPhase yep, and they had a box with space marines so i made my friend join the game too
I've started with Death Guard because my friend gifted me the combat patrol and I got another 1000 pts very cheap on FB.
Spending a lot of time testing out shades of green!
That’s awesome! Love a good bargain, hope you have a great time testing out those greens 👍
well.. I sadly cannot give this video a thumbs up, because orkz iz da best!!!!! ☠☠☠ (gave you a thumbs up anyway :)
Thanks! Orks is certainly da best! I love mine, but the sheer volume of miniatures was a bit offputting for new players, although you can be pretty messy with the weathered looks of painting and kitbashing. 100% a great pick as a second army when you are more into the game and hobbying your really do them justice.
😅that's true.. but that way you get painting practize! 😇 @@TheCommandPhase
Haha very true!
TYRANID BOIS!
Biomass for everyone!
Ork ork ork ork, if u just want to play then go for ork ork ork, they're funny
They certainly are a great faction - plus their books are always a fun read 😂
custodes bcs they are cheapest
That’s fair enough, the new combat patrol is incredible value!
Waaaaaaaaagh! Where da Orks? filfy ooman.
They’re in a tier list of 1 - da best army dere iz!
