  • Figuring out how to pick your First Warhammer 40k army can be a struggle. This ultimate beginners guide shows you how to pick a Warhammer 40k army, going through all of the factions in the game to help you help find the perfect Warhammer 40K army for you!
    There are a lot of amazing factions with unique looks and playstyles so figuring out how to pick your first Warhammer 40K army can get a bit overwhelming. You may often ask yourself which warhammer 40k army should I play?
    With 10th edition just releasing it is the perfect time to get started with your first warhammer 40K army. We go through all of the factions in this ultimate beginners guide giving you an overview of the lore and playstyle of each faction. Plus tips on finding your perfect Warhammer 40K army in 10th edition, but also what to do once you have chosen it!
    Many players find their perfect Warhammer 40K army by a variety of the following things.
    How the models/army looks. End of the day you'll be building and painting up these models so having something you like makes a big difference.
    The lore and stories of the faction, possibly a favourite character.
    The play style of the army, whether this is a shooting army, strong combat army or something in between.
    The size of the army, whether this a small elite force or prefer a horde of models that cover and overwhelm the board.
    The cost of an army can make a big difference. You may want to get started with a smaller cheaper army as the hobby can get very expensive.
    Others pick based on the current power level, which often changes with games workshop balancing regularly I'd advise against this.
    End of the day there is no wrong reason so don't worry! Your enjoyment is all that matters in this amazing game.
    For those who are looking to expand to another warhammer 40k army then this will also be of help to you!
    Let me know in the comments section below which army you have decided upon, I'd love to know. Also if you have any questions about the forces pop them in the comments section and myself of the amazing community will be able to help you!

      I feel your pain - the Sisters playstyle this index is a big shift from last edition. Hopefully once the codex drops (and don't have to wait too long to get it), we will have access to a few more interesting detachments - especially something like bloody rose. On the plus side you do have an amazing army to learn the edition with and build upon!
      I finished building my votann force, primed and started airbrushing the armour until I read the rules for 10th and jumped back to a different force I hadn't finished up as Votann's index is in an awful place.
      Fingers crossed the balancing GW try to do in September helps us both out!

      @@TheCommandPhase the rule I adhere to is that I judge a kit based on how it performs on the crafting table not the playing table and that army leveled up my painting skills over and over again. I mean all three of those are fantastic armies, each with very different playstyles! Necrons are in a good spot with their new codex dropping so you’ve at least got access to all of the different playstyles, granted grey knights and sisters will get theirs soon enough!
      Honestly I’d pick whichever you like the look of the most and can see yourself painting up. My advice there would be to grab a box of infantry, build and paint them up and see which you enjoyed the most!

      What does a new codex dropping mean? I'm also starting the hobby and recently got the Sister's Combat Patrol. It seems there were changes to the data sheet lately (in terms of unit costing) that make the sisters a bit better than when 10th ed started? @@TheCommandPhase

    • @TheCommandPhase
      @TheCommandPhase  4 місяці тому

      @welldan Sorry for the confusion. It means that their new 10th edition codex should be coming out soon (This summer). So with that would come a fair number of new detachments and updates to allow sisters players move variety in their lists and gameplay styles. Hopefully bringing back the more melee focussed bloody rose option we had in 9th edition.
      In terms of the most recent balance dataslate and points updates. There was a slight nerf to sisters in the sense of the Triumph of St Katherine combo with miracle dice was reduced, which it needed to really and makes using miracle dice more impactful over the course of the game. We got a lot of points changes, some very much for the better so hopefully it means you can just enjoy building a list you want to play, rather than auto-including that one combo. It was a good update and thankfully, the likes of Paragon Warsuits, repentia and retributions all getting a points drop which is great.
      Hopefully you enjoy putting your combat patrol together and expanding on your army in the future. The sisters have an absolutely stunning model range!

      @TheCommandPhase thanks bud. Looking into either space wolves or space/ultramarines. Very tempted to get the ultimate starter pack so I can field two small armies right out of the box and play with a friend and also have the rule books etc. You recommend that or just getting a combat patrol?

    • @TheCommandPhase
      @TheCommandPhase  9 місяців тому +1

      Those are two great options, space wolves are very thematic which I'm personally a big fan of, but the space marines are a cool army and plenty of ways to build at a discount.
      The ultimate starter set is really good value (especially if you can pick it up from a discount game store as some do up to 20% off!). plus you get a small amount of terrain to get started too. To be fair if you don't end up wanting to build the nids you can always sell that combat patrol half on ebay to make your overall cost cheaper. Plus the Space Marine codex will be coming out within the next month which is pretty exciting to see what rules and options you get to expand and play.
      If you wanted to go down the space wolves route, their combat patrol isn't a bad choice although I do think you'd probably find the marine combat patrol more fun to build and play and you can always paint them up as space wolves if you did decide that's the army you'd like to expand into.

      So death corps of krieg would come under the Astra militarum and it’s an aesthetic choice now rather than specific rules for that sub faction.
      The downside is bar the kill team box of miniatures, the majority of their troops are old Finecast sculpts which would cost a fortune to build and pain to work with, but if you wanted to play as them, then obviously don’t let that put you off.

For a while now I've been on the edge of diving into the Warhammer 40k lore and talking with some of my buddies over the years I knew that at some point I'd end up diving in. At first, I was caught between the Space Wolves for their viking look and the Dark Angels. In the end, the first legion won out.
    Also, Lion El'Johnson gives me some Dalinar Kholin vibes to anyone who has read Brandon Sanderson's "Stormlight Archives," which after reading the Lion book further supplant my choice of legion.

But in terms of those 3 armies it’s good to see 2 being very melee oriented in the blood angels and world eaters to give you an opposite gameplay style and the experience will help you potentially improve your tau gameplay too learning how to deal and deal with shooting/melee armies.

    imo theres four main things to look for
    1. the vibe of the models
    2. the lore
    3. the playstyle
    4. find a paintscheme you like that goes well with the army.
    lore prolly being the least important because sometimes its fun to make your own lore for your own dudes, for example, imperial/chaos knights are very good at this because you can create the lore of your own house lineage. in general I think knights are kinda lackluster lorewise but I saw this as more of a positive, like a blank slate for me to pour my writing skills upon
    also before you get some models I would look around and find a paintscheme that resonates with you.

      3 great choices right there, Thousand sons have some really nice looking models, espeically magnus, for that psychic heavy theme. Although the trim can be a bit off putting!
      Never been a better time to start Nids with their new codex and range refresh. Can get some real bargains on the second hand market for Leviathan and start collecting box halves or individual kits. Lots of fun playstyle choices and fairly easy to paint.
      Deathwatch are a really cool chapter of space marines and you can go to town on making them all very unique.
      With game balance being pretty good at the moment, it's 100% down to which you think look the coolest, fancy painting up and even which lore resonates the most with you (if you are into that).

      If I were going from lore exclusively I'd go Imperial Guard. I like the idea of the every day person still having the stones to organize and resist against overwhelming odds. I'd just hate to be that guy that rolls up with my little human army for everyone to destroy, all of whom expected a fun opponent (like the 1000 Suns for example). 🤣

      Imperial guard are a pretty fun army tbh and I don't think anyone would find it less fun playing against them to any other faction really. That everyday human against the world of mystical creatures is one of the reasons I've just picked up the Cities of Sigmar army box as my first foray into AoS.

      Not at all - the new Tyranids range is fantastic with all of the new sculpts. The only piece of advice I’d give is head to the second hand market like eBay and look for Tyranids halves of either the Leviathan boxed set or the ultimate starter set as they’ll be a lot cheaper than buying the combat patrol. The ultimate starter set half is the combat patrol which you should get cheaper than the combat patrol box easily enough more or the leviathan half for a similar price but get more models for your money.

    • @TheCommandPhase
      @TheCommandPhase  5 місяців тому

      Thank you for the kind words, really appreciate it!
      So in terms of Cheapest armies, you typically have Grey Knights, Adeptus Custodes, Imperial/Chaos Knights (which I wouldn't recommend) and the likes of Space Marines. Typically you can find things a lot cheaper on the secondary market (ebay/facebook marketplace) or from online local gaming stores (15-20% off RRP) to save some money. Space Marines especially are plentiful on the likes of ebay, even for new on sprue due to them being in pretty much every starter box. There is another video on the channel about starting an army if you were interested to follow up on. But at the beginning of the hobby I'd suggest starting very small, a single box of troops is great and some hobby tools. Learn how to build your models and paint them up before throwing a lot of money on say a combat patrol. That way you can also see if you liked the decision you made with the army or wanted to do something else. If you have a games workshop store near you, you can always pop in and book yourself into hobby lessons there, generally they'll give you a free model to use in those lessons too.
      In all honesty I'd still suggest picking an army which you feel looks the best over what is cheaper, as you can take your time and slowly build up with your budget, play smaller games and go at your own pace. No big rush to get to 2000 points and beyond.
      Hope that helps and if you have any more questions do let me know.

    • @TheCommandPhase
      @TheCommandPhase  4 місяці тому +1

      So the gameplay is slightly different with AoS compared to 40K, but a lot closer than they ever used to be. Honestly it’s mainly down to which you prefer the aesthetic more of. A fantasy or a sci-fi setting. There is no right on wrong answer there as there is a great community for each! 40K is more popular and potentially easier to find a playgroup for, but certainly not a dealbreaker for AoS in that regard.

    • @TheCommandPhase
      @TheCommandPhase  4 місяці тому +1

      They are both really cool looking armies and definitely can see why you’d pick them.
      The best idea would be to pick up a model/troops unit of one and see if you like building and painting them up. As they are both pretty large armies in terms of units, and fairly pricy, so if you find the modelling side unenjoyable then you certainly won’t want to make loads more.
      I’d probably say the genestealer cults are less fiddly to build and paint up, and their current combat patrol box is fantastic to build upon.
      Ad mech’s box isn’t quite as good in terms of the points value of the units in the box with GW changing them up, but they have a lot of really cool kits to choose from also so it’s not the end of the world.
      Gameplay wise ad mech are slightly easier in terms of more gunline/ranged force compared to the sneaky, pop out from the shadows/ambush style gameplay of the cults. The latter is a little more complicated to play, but if you enjoy the army it won’t be something too daunting to pick up and play.
      The rules of both will end up changing, especially with balance passes and when genestealers get their new codex. So I wouldn’t worry too much about taking that into account for now.
      I wouldn’t want to pick one specifically as what I’d enjoy playing may well be completely different, but I do hope that’s of some help and you enjoy your journey.

Else try the next army until you’ve got that aha moment. But honestly as much as the armies power level varies throughout the year with meta changes, having an army you love the look of will end up trumping everything else. If you weren’t sure how they each played, there are some great channels who create battle reports here on UA-cam where you can see stylistically how each army is meant to play. One advantage I’d give Demons over the other two is if you were fancied playing Age of Sigmar your army would pretty much be able to jump straight over, if you were so inclined.

      Thank you for the comment and Welcome to the hobby!
      In terms of both of those armies, I’ll certainly agree they both look fantastic with unique playstyles. I’d have a look at their index rules to get a feel for the units and playstyle of the army. In a nutshell world eaters are a very melee focussed army that really do excel in that part of the game, whereas the Drukhari are a bit more fragile albeit a faster army with their vehicles and transports with a lot of shooting. Granted they can utilise their transports to drop off the witches and incubi into combat who are pretty deadly. They are more of a glass cannon style force than world eaters in that respect.
      In terms of what I’d do is probably grab a single box of their troops, so khorne berserkers and kabalite warriors to build up and paint. This will help you to see if you enjoy the hobby aspect of each army or one more so than the other. That may well help you to decide which to go with first. There is always for the kabalites at least the option to grab the kill team hand of the archon box for a little bit more and worst case if you didn’t fancy building and painting up and entire army of them, you have a kill team to play with if you decided to try out that game.
      I’d also expect some point in this edition to see the second half of the world eaters coming out to expand on the range of models we got at the end of 9th, which is something to look forward to if you do go down that route!
      Hope that was of some help, but feel free to ask more questions if you’re unsure about anything and I’ll try my best to help 👍

    • @TheCommandPhase
      @TheCommandPhase  9 місяців тому +1

      Those are both fun factions and the first port of call really is which of the model ranges do you prefer? Are you someone that is going to potentially want a lot of tanks and infantry or going down the route of more resilient troops with a demonic sub-theme? The other aspect of these two is do you want to be a more shooting based army (guardsmen) or do you prefer to be more combat focused? (most of the chaos factions fall into this category apart from thousand sons who are a mix with lots of psychic shooting)
      The biggest piece of advice I can give is have a look at the ranges and see which you prefer, then pick up a single box of the troops from whichever faction that is. Build them up and paint them to see if you enjoy that part of the hobby as with an army there are a fair number to get through so if you didn't enjoy painting up a squad of guardsmen for example, you potentially may not for the other guardsmen units.
      Hope that helps!

      oh! or chaos knights!! no infantry and full tanks if you want a full lean into heavies. or both!! you can actually pair one chaos knight with any chaos army, I'd be thrilled to see a knight tyrant tagging alongside a legion of iron warriors

      The other aspect is gameplay. As tau are generally a shooting heavy force, picking up a melee heavy faction has the potential to really help your overall gameplay. As you’ll learn not only how to deal with shooting armies, but that knowledge will help you to improve when playing your tau.

Plus with the upcoming Codex allowing you to play whichever detachment you’d like as any colour scheme, which chapter you pick is more for aesthetic purposes.

So you can paint your army however you'd like to and use any of the detachments in the book, rather than being tied down to one if you wanted to be Salamanders. Which is a great change.
      That being said, there is a detachment in the Space Marine Codex called Firestorm Assault force which is very much Salamanders themed. You don't have to use this, you could use any of the others, but it's there should you want to.

So in terms of the space marines, you have a detachments that focus on heavy weapons and holding the line or vehicle heavy or even getting up close and personal with flame and melta weapons. Giving people more options to build a list how they’d like to.
      Adeptus Mechanicus and Necrons are next up to receive their codex in the next few months.
      Hope that was of some help, but if you have any questions please feel free to get in touch and I’ll do my best to help. You never know it could help create and idea for a future video 🙂

      Not really. You can have your more experienced friend pick an army for you. But this video should help them make a decision on their own.

    Black Legion..?

      They fall under the Chaos Space Marine’s for this video as I based this on the playable factions for 10th edition. As black legion, like word bearers and such are now aesthetic choices and don’t have their own book anymore they fall under this.
      A few people would like this style video for the individual marine chapters so that’s something that may well happen in the future.
      Hope that helps 👍

      @@TheCommandPhase ngl i kinda wondered why table top hobbyists in the ph never touched 40k. Its an amazing game with lots of lore and amazing quality models. That price for a single knight abominant made my wife reevaluate her marriage.

      @lilpointless7438 😂
      There are certainly ways to make the hobby cheaper than buying directly from GW but it’ll never really be “cheap” to play 2K points of 40K. Certainly some cheaper games to get into if you wanted to be part of the Warhammer universe. But certainly no harm in enjoying the odd model and playing another game inside your price point. Certainly a luxury!

      @@TheCommandPhase True. looked into 3d models too. its a good alternate but unfortunately not that many here where i live and the few that could make me a Chaos knight costs the same if not more than a GW model. I'ma look for a box of wardogs to start off maybe in 2 years time i might have enough to be able to play. am already good with the painting and assembling given that i've outgrown the Gunpla Hobby. I hope it translates well when i do get my first minatures.

    this is easy...
    buy the miniatures/models you like.
    then use them in any game system other than GW published games.
    DON'T CHASE THE META OR FOMO!!!
    GW is the reason I don't play GW games
