      @TheCommandPhase  Рік тому +34

      I feel your pain - the Sisters playstyle this index is a big shift from last edition. Hopefully once the codex drops (and don't have to wait too long to get it), we will have access to a few more interesting detachments - especially something like bloody rose. On the plus side you do have an amazing army to learn the edition with and build upon!
      I finished building my votann force, primed and started airbrushing the armour until I read the rules for 10th and jumped back to a different force I hadn't finished up as Votann's index is in an awful place.
      Fingers crossed the balancing GW try to do in September helps us both out!

      I mean all three of those are fantastic armies, each with very different playstyles! Necrons are in a good spot with their new codex dropping so you’ve at least got access to all of the different playstyles, granted grey knights and sisters will get theirs soon enough!
      Honestly I’d pick whichever you like the look of the most and can see yourself painting up. My advice there would be to grab a box of infantry, build and paint them up and see which you enjoyed the most!

      What does a new codex dropping mean? I'm also starting the hobby and recently got the Sister's Combat Patrol. It seems there were changes to the data sheet lately (in terms of unit costing) that make the sisters a bit better than when 10th ed started? @@TheCommandPhase

    • @TheCommandPhase
      @TheCommandPhase  10 місяців тому

      @welldan Sorry for the confusion. It means that their new 10th edition codex should be coming out soon (This summer). So with that would come a fair number of new detachments and updates to allow sisters players move variety in their lists and gameplay styles. Hopefully bringing back the more melee focussed bloody rose option we had in 9th edition.
      In terms of the most recent balance dataslate and points updates. There was a slight nerf to sisters in the sense of the Triumph of St Katherine combo with miracle dice was reduced, which it needed to really and makes using miracle dice more impactful over the course of the game. We got a lot of points changes, some very much for the better so hopefully it means you can just enjoy building a list you want to play, rather than auto-including that one combo. It was a good update and thankfully, the likes of Paragon Warsuits, repentia and retributions all getting a points drop which is great.
      Hopefully you enjoy putting your combat patrol together and expanding on your army in the future. The sisters have an absolutely stunning model range!

    • @TheCommandPhase
      @TheCommandPhase  8 місяців тому +1

      So death corps of krieg would come under the Astra militarum and it’s an aesthetic choice now rather than specific rules for that sub faction.
      The downside is bar the kill team box of miniatures, the majority of their troops are old Finecast sculpts which would cost a fortune to build and pain to work with, but if you wanted to play as them, then obviously don’t let that put you off.
      There are rumours that they’ll get a new range release in the future but certainly take that with a pinch of salt. I’d love to see it, but no idea if it’ll actually happen.

    My brother and I had a chaos space marine force when we were teenagers. I Recently hopped back into the hobby, still wondering which army to pick.
    currently thinking about Salamanders, for their honorable code and because they value and protect the innocent at all costs...
    but then I'd also like to get into the astra militarum just to get sly marbo, cause he's too damn funny ahahah
    he's sort of a comic relief character, made by taking inspiration from chuck norris, rambo and guile; this is how they took inspiration from chuck norris for him:
    the stories of Sly Marbo's exploits have passed from the Catachan Jungle Fighters on to many other regiments of the Astra Militarum, where he has become something of a mythological figure or the central protagonist of a series of tall tales.
    The stories of his exploits have grown so outlandish that Astra Militarum command has ordered that repetition of the following anecdotes about Marbo by line troopers is punishable by immediate reassignment as a Gunner Specialist [Plasma], Grade 1.
    Sly Marbo threw a grenade and killed five Orks. Then it exploded.
    Sly Marbo poked the Warp right in the Eye of Terror.
    A Catachan Devil once stung Sly Marbo. After 5 solar days of agonising pain, the Catachan Devil died.
    Flak Armour wears Sly Marbo for protection.
    Sly Marbo doesn't have a shadow because he scared it off.
    When Ambulls go to bed at night, they check their nests for Sly Marbo.
    The fastest way to a man's heart is with Sly Marbo's blade.
    Sly Marbo once shot down a Dakkajet by pointing at it with his finger and saying "bang!".
    Sly Marbo doesn't shower, he takes blood baths.
    Lord Castellan Ursarkar E. Creed wears Sly Marbo pyjamas.
    If at first you don't succeed, you're not Sly Marbo.
    The official name for Exterminatus is Sly Marbo.
    Sly Marbo beat a Warlord Titan at arm wrestling.
    Sly Marbo hacked a Tyranid Prime to death with its own scything talon.
    Sly Marbo can run faster than a Shokkjump Dragsta.
    Sly Marbo sleeps with a pillow under his gun.
    The Cicatrix Maledictum was created when Sly Marbo sneezed.
    The first name engraved in every suit of Adeptus Custodes' armour is Sly Marbo.
    Sly Marbo does not sleep. He waits...
    Sly Marbo does not go hunting because "hunting" implies the possibility of failure -- Sly Marbo goes killing.
    Roboute Guilliman keeps an inspirational pict of Sly Marbo with him at all times.
    Sly Marbo won a staring contest with a Necron.

    I'm thinking of going with the Dark Angels, I love their whole knightly aesthetic, and I recently picked up "Lion: Son of the Forest" on Audible with my free credit. For a while now I've been on the edge of diving into the Warhammer 40k lore and talking with some of my buddies over the years I knew that at some point I'd end up diving in. At first, I was caught between the Space Wolves for their viking look and the Dark Angels. In the end, the first legion won out.
    Also, Lion El'Johnson gives me some Dalinar Kholin vibes to anyone who has read Brandon Sanderson's "Stormlight Archives," which after reading the Lion book further supplant my choice of legion.

    imo theres four main things to look for
    1. the vibe of the models
    2. the lore
    3. the playstyle
    4. find a paintscheme you like that goes well with the army.
    lore prolly being the least important because sometimes its fun to make your own lore for your own dudes, for example, imperial/chaos knights are very good at this because you can create the lore of your own house lineage. in general I think knights are kinda lackluster lorewise but I saw this as more of a positive, like a blank slate for me to pour my writing skills upon
    also before you get some models I would look around and find a paintscheme that resonates with you.

    • @TheCommandPhase
      @TheCommandPhase  Рік тому +2

      I agree that creating your own lore is a great aspect of the hobby and is such a nice way to make an army your own. Pairing that with a unique colour scheme and even some kitbashing can make for some truly striking armies that are all your own.

      @Wildwolface77 They aren’t a standalone faction these days with their own book, but a chapter you can pick in the Space Marines Codex itself. So they fit into that section of the video. Plus with the upcoming Codex allowing you to play whichever detachment you’d like as any colour scheme, which chapter you pick is more for aesthetic purposes.
      Black legion are the same with the Chaos Space Marine section as their previous codex and current index covers all of those in one book. Plus like I mentioned earlier, with 10th edition it’s more of an aesthetic choice.

      @TheCommandPhase thanks bud. Looking into either space wolves or space/ultramarines. Very tempted to get the ultimate starter pack so I can field two small armies right out of the box and play with a friend and also have the rule books etc. You recommend that or just getting a combat patrol?

    • @TheCommandPhase
      @TheCommandPhase  Рік тому +1

      Those are two great options, space wolves are very thematic which I'm personally a big fan of, but the space marines are a cool army and plenty of ways to build at a discount.
      The ultimate starter set is really good value (especially if you can pick it up from a discount game store as some do up to 20% off!). plus you get a small amount of terrain to get started too. To be fair if you don't end up wanting to build the nids you can always sell that combat patrol half on ebay to make your overall cost cheaper. Plus the Space Marine codex will be coming out within the next month which is pretty exciting to see what rules and options you get to expand and play.
      If you wanted to go down the space wolves route, their combat patrol isn't a bad choice although I do think you'd probably find the marine combat patrol more fun to build and play and you can always paint them up as space wolves if you did decide that's the army you'd like to expand into.

    Sisters: Space nuns with Space guns! How cool is that? Love the Catholic imagery too, as art history is a passion of mine.
    League: Space dwarves! Not sure how hard they are to paint but they look sick!
    Orks: love the grimy ramshackle look.
    Genestealer Cults: Because insidious cults are narratively awesome!

I think I like the play style of the Chaos Marines best but tbh not that keen on the models, where as I've always really liked the look of the Tyranids but not sure I I will enjoy the play style. Normal Space Marines just seems like a safe option - they look easy to paint and GW will never neglect them (like they did with my previous 2 Armies!).

      No problem and welcome back to the hobby!
      They’re all great choices and to be fair you can play each in a variety of ways. Especially now the codex has dropped for both the Tyranids and Space Marines. Although, it’ll still probably come down to the models and what you’d prefer to paint up. The positive is with them both being in the starter sets and having new Christmas boxes it’s a great time to get into either army on a budget! Either way I’m sure you’ll have a great time and if you have any questions do let me know and I’ll do my best to help!

    Hi I had a random question. I bought a starter set on Amazon with space marines and tyranids. All the images show the space marines being painted as ultramarines. Do they have to be ultramarines or am I able to make them space wolves instead? If I make them space wolves will it conflict with what the space wolves have available?

    • @TheCommandPhase
      @TheCommandPhase  26 днів тому +1

      So if you head to the Warhammer 40K downloads on the Warhammer community website you can find the Space Wolves index. There are some Space Marine units that you can’t take if you wanted to run the Space Wolves index detachment and later on their codex which I think comes next year (Tactical Squad; Assault Squad; Assault Squad with Jump Packs; Devastator Squad; Command Squad; Apothecary) - but everything from the starter set is good to paint up as Space Wolves should you wish to.
      The the rumours are there is a big range refresh for the space wolves coming next year, so if that is an army you’re looking to start, I’d personally stick to picking up the units from the Space Marines codex that you want to run. I know it’s a fair way away, but we could be getting new thunderwolves, characters and a fair few other bits which would make for a welcome upgrade from the dated models we have now.
      That being said if you wanted to have a generic space marines force that you just paint up as space wolves for now, there is nothing stopping you doing that as paint schemes don’t lock you out of anything. It’s only if you wanted to run the Space wolves detachment.
      Hope that helps.

    • @Biriba2isGaming-fe7nd
      @Biriba2isGaming-fe7nd 26 днів тому +1

      @ thank you, this helps. Would I have to find a separate book with the stats for space wolves. Also I noticed the set came with what looks like lord Calgar. Can I paint him as a space wolf as well?

    • @TheCommandPhase
      @TheCommandPhase  26 днів тому

      You can download those for free on the Warhammer community website under the downloads section for 40K and indexes.
      www.warhammer-community.com/en-gb/downloads/warhammer-40000/
      I think in the starter set it’s a terminator captain rather than calgar (he’s got twin power fists) so feel free to paint up as a space wolf. If you wanted to try adding pelts and fur to it with green stuff (loads of tutorials online and fairly easy to do) to add more space wolfly goodness to it. No need to though, only if you’d like to.

    Which one would support a ranged battlefield control playstyle the best?

    • @TheCommandPhase
      @TheCommandPhase  2 місяці тому

      So you have a few options here so I'd take a look at the model ranges of each to help decide which you'd like to go down the route of for heavy shooting based forces.
      T'au Empire are probably the best known for shooting with pretty much the entire army based around that phase of the game. Lots of cool battlesuits and long ranged firepower to get stuck in. If you like the gundam/mech aesthetic then this is the one for you.
      Votann are next and they're a tough army to hold their own with a lot of shooting, with some decent melee options if you wanted to dabble in that also. They're a lot more vehicle heavy with Sagitaurs and Hekaton Land Fortresses doing the brunt of the shooting. Very new model range too which helps.
      Astra Militarum are your bread and butter army of what you'd expect from current armies. Lots of infantry, tanks and artilery weapons to do a lot of long ranged firepower and artilery bombardments. Their troops understandably aren't the strongest being normal humans in the 41st milenium but you do have a lot of fun options.
      If you wanted something a bit more elite, imperial knights can be a pretty deadly shooting force with a low model count.
      You'll probably find other armies like Aeldari, Necrons, Space Marines and Drukhari can all be focussed into a shooting force, but Tau for sure are the most shooting heavy in the game as they don't really have any melee options bar kroot allies.
      I'd definitely take a look through to see which model range you like the most and go from there as that's the most important aspect of the hobby really. Hope that was of some help.

      No such thing as a stupid question :)
      While allying used to be more of a thing back in earlier editions of Warhammer 40k, unfortunately it's very much reduced these days. That being said, the closest you'll have for humans would be the new Imperial Agents codex that will be out very soon. This includes a variety of ways to build that include deathwatch marines, grey knigths, sisters, inquistors, and imperial forces. While typically these were used more for allying into other imperium armies in the past, you can build a force from this if you'd like to. I think it comes out next weekend (24th) so worth taking a look through that at a local GW store as they'll have an open copy no doubt.

      Sorry I didn’t explain in the video that the first founding chapters of the space marines (like the ultramarines, iron hands, imperial fists, raven guard and salamanders) that don’t have their own standalone codex like the blood angels are more of an aesthetic choice in 10th. While there are detachments in the space marines codex that are themed on each of those chapters you can play as any you’d like and paint up your army however you’d like to. Hopefully that helps in that regards.

    I'm looking to get into the hobby soon, when I can realistically splurge funds to it, and currently from what i've looked into i'm fairly interested in starting with the Dark Angels for looks and backstory however I was quite interested in the Salamanders while looking into the lore but then when I started looking around I found that they don't have a combat patrol and they don't seem to get talked about/much love.. is there a reason they are kinda forgotten about and pushed to the wayside?

    • @TheCommandPhase
      @TheCommandPhase  3 місяці тому

      So the Salamanders, sit with a few of the other first founding chapters as part of the Space Marine codex. (Ultramarines, Imperial Fists, Raven Guard, White Scars & Iron Hands) While there is a detachment that is in the "style" of the Salamanders, you can pick any of them to play as and the colour scheme/chapter is more of an aesthetic choice. You still have some Salamanders named characters available to you should want to use them, but they can just use anything from the main Space Marine codex, so plenty of options should you want to play as them.
      The likes of Space Wolves, Dark Angels, Blood Angels and Black Templars have a lot more specialist units and keep their separate codex, which they can use in addition to the Space Marine one to decide which detachment they'd like to use.

      Honestly bud - please don’t worry about that, you certainly shouldn’t get any “hate” when playing them in person. If you wanted to play Tau, then go for it. They’re a really cool faction, great aesthetic, updated Kroot look awesome and you have new Vespid models coming in a future kill team. End of the day the models you like the most are the most important thing!
      In terms of starting out, the combat patrol is a good box for that Tau. Else if you wanted to start smaller, maybe look at grabbing a squad of breachers or the pathfinders kill team so that you have options to play that game while growing your 40K army - plus being a smaller box if you did decide actually these aren’t for me, then it’s not a huge cost investment to swap to a different faction.

      @TheCommandPhase  2 місяці тому

      So the Chaos Legions that don't have their own standlone codex (like Death guard, Thousand sons, World Eaters and soon to be Emperor's children) are just part of the main Chaos Space Marine codex. As of 10th the colour scheme or legion choice is just aesthetic and you can play any detachment in that book as our chosen legion. There are specific ones in there that are themed on those legions, but you aren't stuck using those. So you could well paint up your chaos models in alpha legion colours (like I am) and play in a way you'd like to.

    Originally I started with tyranids, and while I really like their models, their playstyle isn't exactly what I wanted. In most games I ALWAYS pick the thing/character with the highest health and slowest movement/least mobility. Anything that resembles heavy from tf2 haha, i love super chonky things. I'm just not sure what that'd be in 40k. And I've been worrying that there really isn't a "perfect" faction for me

    • @TheCommandPhase
      @TheCommandPhase  5 місяців тому +1

      I mean if you want a faction that is chunky with big guns like the heavy in TF2, Votann might not be a bad shout. They are tough space dwarves with some big chunky armour, tanks, great guns and some decent melee too. They are a pretty cool army that I thoroughly enjoy and being pretty new they are also great sculpts too. Plus they should get a second wave to their model range this edition to expand upon what they already have.
      Otherwise you could make a Space Marine force that’s heavy on Dreadnaughts, techmarines and gravis bodies which make a pretty chunky force. Imperial or Chaos Knights are other options, being very elite with big bodies and pretty devastating firepower/melee potential. Hopefully that’s been of some help to you and you find the army your are looking for soon.

      Not at all - the new Tyranids range is fantastic with all of the new sculpts. It's so great to see people coming from playing Space Marines 2 - it's a fantastic game and will do wonders for the hobby space.
      In answer to your questions, a lot of them do - although some moreso than others.
      So the Ultramarines, Salamanders, Iron Hands, White Scars, Imperial Fists and Raven Guard mainly only have unique characters to add into a force. These all fall under the Space Marine Codex. (Vulkan and Adrax Agatone being the two salamander characters, plus upgrade sprues to make your army fit the chapter should you wish to.)
      While the Space Wolves, Blood Angels, Dark Angels and Black Templars have their own supplemental codex as well which includes a lot of units that are dedicated for their chapters (not just characters). Plus they can use the vast majority of the normal space marine kits too (just not named characters from other chapters) and the detachments in thier codex and the space marine one. So a few more options from these should you wish to collect one of those. I'd have a look on the warhammer webstore and have a hunt through to see which you'd like the most.

    I need help picking between the space marines dark angels deathwatch and chaos space marines

      So the first question would be which of these armies do you think look the coolest/have the best looking models you’d like to build, paint and play with? This honestly would be the main factor in choosing.
      In terms of the armies you have there, you could use a Dark Angels colour scheme to play as any of the space marine detachments if you wanted to as they aren’t locked behind a colour scheme.
      Deathwatch might be worth a little bit of a wait only as they might be getting rolled into the new Imperial Agents codex that’s coming out in the next few weeks, so would change up how you would collect that army.
      As for Chaos Space Marines, like Space Marines have a lot of cool options to choose from, some very thematic detachments and cool models. Tend to be more melee focussed than traditional Space Marines if you think you’d prefer that element of the game.
      I’d look to grab a box of models from one of the factions (potentially a kill team so you have another game to be able to play while you grow your force) and see if you can see yourself making a full army of those. If so then you’ve found the right army for you, else move onto the next one until you have. But rule of cool will always trump everything else in this game.
      Hopefully that was of some help and best of luck in choosing!

    I’m debating between the Adeptus Mechanicus and the imperial Knights, I like the idea of the titans, but I like how knights look, is there a way to combine the two? I know they’re both imperialis armies, so is there compatibility?

      So with the imperial knights, you can ally in one big knight or up to 3 smaller armigers into any imperium army. They wouldn't be able to be your warlord, but you can mix that way. There are some other ally rules (which I go over in my list building 101 video), but if you wanted an ad mech army with a knight in, you certainly can.
      Sadly this edition is a lot less flexible with allies that it used to be, but hopefully this still helps you get what you were looking for.

    I'm a sucker for chitin, claws and jaws. Tyranids, Death Guard, Chaos Demons or Necrons for me.

    Lore wise the Grey Knights are my favorite. But it doesn't seem like they're very "viable" in the grand scheme

      They are in a great place at the moment on the tabletop and one of the cheaper armies currently to collect! so I certainly wouldn’t rule them out if you like their lore and models.
