  • Correcting a puppy is necessary, but it should not be punitive or too aversive to prevent destroying the relationship. Corrections are a guide to more information and I discuss this in this short video.

    Sensible advice- the puppy sounds amazing. Already doing better than most humans from what you say.

    Thank you for this answer. I corrected my 6-month-old puppy today for the first time and I felt so guilty lol. You put my mind at ease that I can be firm but fair, thank you Robert

    Exactly what I do with my 4 6 month old litter mates! I know you think litter mates are a bad idea, Robert. It seems to be working for me . They have pack mentality when all loose on my property but work well on the leash, the girls always come when called. They know I'm the boss!

    What do you think about grip (I don’t know if I wrote correctly) so you hold a puppy from a chest with crossed fingers and two thumbs go under the collar, that’s what we were told to do when puppy goes crazy and bites and jumps. It calms down them good.

    Hi Robert. Thanks for all your great educational videos. My question. How do you gain recall with a deaf dog?

    Hi Robert, I have a 6 month old Beagle Jack Russell mix. She is extremely needy. What I mean is you can play with her forever but its never enough, she will paw at you to the point of scratching up my arm to get my attention. When she's ignored for too long, she will purposely tinkle in the house and she is house trained. How do I correct this behavior?

    Robert, my 6 year old Golden wants to take a path of walking where there are dogs that I don't trust. I want him to stay in a different larger grassy area.
    He prefers walking where other dogs are, I would love to correct that so that he can run around with me in a grassy open area.
    What steps can I take to give him a quality walk that is not where unruly dogs are?

    awesome vid. It's fine to anthropomorphize your dog, though. - As long as you are aware you are doing it and that it actually has about as much meaning as (insert low value thing).

    This might not work with Malinois. lol Scruff of the neck works sometimes and sometimes the only way to manage a situation when they are puppies is the crate. If you do anything else crate train your Mainois. If mine didnt go in on his own, when he starts using his what I like to call puppy brain then I would have a lot more broken things in my home LOL!

    I have a 7month old male GSD when he gets overly bratty I kennel him for a hour or two. He seems to settle down and behave better once I let him out again. Is this the right thing to do? I do alot of correcting as well.

      @@bickle8931 nope not at all. Kennel is always a happy place. We just redirect him so he's not immediately going in after a naughty behavior.

    ROBERT first of all PLEASE move to MICHIGAN🙀. My 9 month old border collie does very well when their is treats in my hand BUT when I give him a command with out a treat he looks at me with the deer in the headlight stare. Am I expecting to much to soon.

    • @bleach579

      I have a 6 month old border collie and he listens to all his commands without treats. What I did was, first teach and shape with treats, sometimes without (but always ending on a treat before the session ends) but crucially, I wove all his commands into games of tug. I tug and get excited like a spastic but i let go and let him realise that when im gone there is no fun. So when we're on walks or random places he thinks we will play if he does what i say. Also idk about yours but mine loves a good run so after he's done what i said in an unfamiliar environment we have a short sprint.

      I've got a very active 10 month old choc Lab and I had a similar prob. I found that spacing out the treats and rewarding after every 3rd or 4th command for training was better. I only do this for commands she's practising. If she learns a new command by itself, then she gets the treat each time she does it correctly. Also I always train on the leash so you can correct the behaviour and show what you expect. Never raise your voice or speak with a frightening tone because dogs will remember and will not want to be frightened and may avoid coming to you. They can switch off very easily. Always be the fun and interesting person in their life and a reward can be a really good cuddle.

      Fouad Ka Hi Fouad, please watch Robert’s videos on crate training with your parents so they will understand the process too. It’s going to work and the crate will help everyone-I promise it will work. New puppies do take time and patience so don’t give up. Good luck to you !!!

    Ask me anything : hi I'm a big fan, my working line gsd barks alot when I'm working her, like literally doesn't stop (working and barking ) until she gets the reward . Is this normal? Is there something I can do to reduce the barking ? Thanks

    • @inactiveaccount191
      @inactiveaccount191 5 років тому +1

      ffaallaakk try not ti reward her when she barks instead reward her when she doesn’t so she learns you don’t like that behaviour, If she is a very high drive dog try to start out with other things like maybe when you’re not working her But she still gets excited and barks and then gradually build up her not to bark while working either :)

    • @ffaallaakk
      @ffaallaakk 5 років тому

      @@inactiveaccount191 thank you for your reply, and I have tried that, the issue is she does the command correctly so I don't want to confuse her shes almost 2 years old, I got her from a shelter and concentrated on teaching the commands first and ignored the barking thinking it might stop ( mistake by me I know )
