Thank you for saying that it’s okay to crate the puppy! We have a high energy breed, and at 5 months old, she doesn’t self-settle. She just gets more and more wound up and I think that, just like little kids who fight sleep, she gets a shot of adrenaline that keeps her going until she absolutely crashes. I have found that if I crate her, she’ll nap, and then be able to exercise more self-control after her time in the crate.

Definitely agree about incorporating obedience into games of fetch to exercise the brain. This has really helped me (especially when he was younger and couldn't go on longer walks) and I love seeing my boy use his brain. Also thanks for clarifying re socialisation. I allowed my dog to say hello to every dog we met when he was younger thinking that this was what it was about and had to quickly unpick it as it was driving the wrong behaviours, so it's good to see a video that talks about socialisation in more detail and how to build it up.
This video is awesome! So helpful and so informative. I love the informal unstructured format too where you're just simply talking about the ins and outs. I think I actually learned more from this than from the videos on specific training exercises :)

What would you recommend for working on recall if you don’t have access to an open isolated space? We live in a city in an apartment and aren’t allowed to take her to the nearby park.
Hi, I’m not a dog trainer, but I also have a puppy who can’t go to the park yet. So I can share what we did which was really effective. Few days ago we went to the city centre to socialise and get used to being around various types of interactions. So, the first time we went there, I didn’t make my puppy walk immediately, we just sat on a bench and watched the surroundings. We sat like this for an hour and then he felt confident enough to walk and enjoy the city. So, then we walked and learned, and it was easy :) My puppy is really smart and react to my commands well, so I could train him after an hour, but it might take a few days in other cases :) just sitting and watching
My puppy has been doing really well at politely greeting and playing with other dogs off leash at the dog park, but really plays rough and annoys my older dog at home. He's not aggressive, and it seems like playful fighting, but I can't get him to settle and stop. Any advice? I want them to be able to interact without playing so rough in the house.
We have an 11wk old border collie and she is currently refusing to come back inside after going potty outside (with a leash). Sits down and doesn't budge, so we pick her up and she now starts growling. What would your suggestion be to change this behaviour?
I have a 6mo old shepherd/Pyrenese mix ..i did not crate train and i did some things right but I really didnt know how to train so im just starting some of your tips now. Will she be able to learn or did I already screw it up. She was a barn dog so im still trying to get per to do her business outside and i only get this half of the time but I keep trying. I haven't quite figured out how to get her to walk next to me so she just loves smelling everything..she also barks a lot and its scared of everything and I haven't figured out how to fix that either. I do love her though and I will keep trying. My husband of 44 yrs passed last august and she is helping me but I hope I didnt bite off more than I can chew.
Pamela -- you have plenty of time to train your dog. I got my Pomeranian at two years old, the only thing he knew was doing his business outside (thankfully). He is three and a half years now and has basic obedience down (walking on a leash is still a work in progress), knows some tricks and is picking up some agility. He is still very reactive with other dogs, so I'm concentrating on working with that. But with me being disabled (no balance and I have to have a walker/rollator when outside with him), it's kinda tough. But be consistent with your dog, work on behaviors/tricks a little bit every day, be patient and your dog will be a wonderful companion for you. Good luck. 👍
Luckily I have a small house. Currently, I’m trying to get my schnauzer puppy, Scooby who I’m going to train to alert my family someone around me if I’m having a seizure; he is chewing on me and I try to distract him but because I feel around to supplement low vision , he thinks I’m playing when I’m looking to see what he’s chewing on. Any ideas? He’s 3 months and one week this week.

Is your dog crate trained? because if so you could put your puppy in its crate right before guests arrive, then once everyone settles in (both guest and dog in crate), then you could take the dog out of the crate and continue with what you are already doing
@@latosa18 keep her on an indoor lead, when she’s in the crate put it on so she doesn’t have the ability to bolt straight out restrict her movement so she then sits next to you and reward her for sitting and move it into allowing her to walk near people

Is training a 3 Month old puppy too early? I am not sure what type of training we should provide at this age. He does not have any vaccines yet. Thanks!
I have a 5 month old border collie and it is very difficult to train her to sit down when people want to say hello. When I take her for a walk, people just walk up to her and pet her, let her jump, ... without my permission or before I can let her sit 😠 It's very annoying, why do people think its OK to just pet any dog without permission?
I have a 9 month old Staffordshire girl and she jumps on you when she see’s someone she knows even though we tell her to stop? How do I get her to do all those things moving forward?
Try "it's your choice game" with Susan Garret.. it is amazing ;) and also : reward what you want ( when the dog allready relaxes: reward ) reward calm.. :) God luck :)
i would use what your dog thinks as low value treats to reward calm behavior, like their kibble, carrots or lettuce. By low value treats I mean food that they're still willing to eat, but not get over excited or lose interest in it completely. When your done excerising your dog or training, wait until they settle, and get up and reward them. They may pop up expectantly looking for more treats, and that's okay. Make sure you reward when your dog is NOT thinking about the food. Keep doing this until you see success. If your dog likes to mug your hand or sniff at treats in your pocket, I suggest teaching no mugging. Kikopup has a video on that.
We just got an 8 week old Australian Labradoodle pup, he's super sweet and slept in his crate the entire night on his third night here. However during the day he seems to be very restless when out of the crate and not playing / eating so I lure him in the crate and let him get his rest there throughout the day. Is this wrong? I don't want to him to live in a cage but he doesn't cry or whine when he's in there and just settles after a minute or 2 to take a long nap.
Love your videos. Your a great help. I received my puppy a week ago and sofar he's great. I've learned by watching videos since I got him that I got him kind of early. 5.5 weeks old. 8 weeks should have been the minimum. He was eating food when i got him and walking fine so the guy said hes good to go.I'm concerned about behavior problems in the future. Should I be concerned? Is it too early to train? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Wondering how you’ve done with your puppy? We got ours at 7 weeks and quickly realized it was too young As well. He deals with separation anxiety but I don’t know if that’s just a normal puppy thing or related to leaving his mom too young. Hope things went ok for your baby pup!
I have a 6mth old collie too, she’s very hyper at times and walking her isn’t enough, she needs mental stimulation and i’m doing lots of training which helps, (Recall is hit or miss, she comes within 6ft of me!, im kinda stuck 😪) can you do a video about different games like find it, or similar as i’m running out of ideas. Thank you for your great advice. 🏴
Since there are too many lose dogs in my locality where owners just let their dogs roam free, where they might have a chance of viruses in them...so for that,I dnt let my dalmatian meet them for t fear of sickness. So is it ok if I dnt let my 6 months old dalmatian don't meet or play with other dogs?
From what I have seen online it seems the general consensus is only about 5 min of exercise for each month of age up to 18 months. Is this the general rule you guys follow? Obviously forced exercise should be avoided in puppies but 30 min for many 6 month old active breeds doesn't seem like it would be sufficient over the course of an entire day?
wondering the same thing with my 3 month old german shepherd puppy, a 15 minute wlak is basically nothing considering the amount of time she stops to sniff different things or stare at other dogs + birds.
@@KurrieSauce You may want to ask on a few GSD specific forums and find out what people are actually doing. My border collie puppy would have lost his mind being this restricted. I finally just decided to raise him like I have raised other puppies...allowing him moderate at will exercise daily and but not letting him get carried away with it. I don't include time spent sniffing or rolling around like a clown as exercise but this is just my opinion.
Hi, we just started fostering a 1ish yr old dog and she thinks jumping on people is a game! especially when you try to correct it. How do I train her not to jump? I know you talked about that but she's not a puppy 🤔
I would really like to do the “line training” with my shihpoo at home but I have read that shihtzu’s have very sensitive necks and that I shouldn’t put a collar on for walks and training purposes. What are your thoughts about that? Thank you!!
Shahina -- I use a harness on my Pomeranian, works perfectly well. Depending on what I'm working on with him, I alternate a normal 6-10 foot leash with a 30ft long line or 50ft long line. The 50ft leash is usually used when I play fetch with him.

I have a 5 month old border collie and it is very difficult to train her to sit down when people want to say hello.
When I take her for a walk, people just walk up to her and pet her, let her jump, ... without my permission or before I can let her sit 😠
It's very annoying, why do people think its OK to just pet any dog without permission?
I have a 9 month old Staffordshire girl and she jumps on you when she see’s someone she knows even though we tell her to stop? How do I get her to do all those things moving forward?
Stand on her lead with enough slack that if she jumps up she corrects herself. And invite you visitor to come in.
I also can't seem to play fetch or anything with my dog. He gets really amped up and gets up going at me and trying to bite me.. any tips?
I can't get my dog to be calm when there's food around at all.. like how euchre is just sitting with you.. not a chance! How do I do that?
Do you have a video on how to STOP my dog barking ( postman people coming and going ectect please 👍👍
Gorge dog. Brilliant video. Give pup a pig's ear from me 😁
Love your videos.
I have a 6mth old collie too, she’s very hyper at times and walking her isn’t enough, she needs mental stimulation and i’m doing lots of training which helps, (Recall is hit or miss, she comes within 6ft of me!, im kinda stuck 😪)
can you do a video about different games like find it, or similar as i’m running out of ideas.
I know you talked about that but she's not a puppy 🤔
what treats are you giving her? is it low calorie???
I think you are promoting her movement sensitivity by daily fetch. It is border collie.
No biting or nipping?
I would really like to do the “line training” with my shihpoo at home but I have read that shihtzu’s have very sensitive necks and that I shouldn’t put a collar on for walks and training purposes. What are your thoughts about that?
Thank you!!
Shahina -- I use a harness on my Pomeranian, works perfectly well. Depending on what I'm working on with him, I alternate a normal 6-10 foot leash with a 30ft long line or 50ft long line. The 50ft leash is usually used when I play fetch with him.
My issue is that too much exercise is not good for puppies
My 8 months Border Collie doesn't like to play fetching with us when we go to the park. 😭
What breed is Euchre
She is a Border Collie.
