Nice job getting that jigsaw puzzle back together Tony. With all the repairs you’ve made, wait till they find out what a new top costs and getting it to work. It will be more than the car is worth unfortunately.
This video reminds me of a sign that is on the wall of my mechanic's garage. It says: Hourly Rates $50 per hour $60 per hour if you stay and watch $70 per hour if you give advice. $80 per hour if you help $90 per hour if you tried and failed to fix the problem
I don't think this project made you look like an idiot at all. You got off on the wrong foot with the customer bringing you that mess..still learned something. Thanks Tony
Even with proper care these poor cars do not hold up well. I worked at a VW dealer when they were new. They broke frequently from new. All of the interior trim falls apart. Just a nightmare.
I have the same car. It's been my project car because something's always wrong with it. I did the window regulators with the ones from the junkyard. Never went to the dealer. They were too expensive so I. Ended up buying a couple window. Regulator repair kits for about $25 on. EBay and restrung. And they were great now!, Your top has a different issue is probably electrical with a motors or something. I had a brand new top put on Mine. It was about $3000, which is the material only... Right now it's in my garage for a new fuel pump which I replaced a couple of years ago which went bad and a front crash sensor so it keeps me busy.
One expensive can of worms! I sure wouldn't take a check/card from these customers, cash! Sounds like you won't make a dime on this job. The problem is that now that the youtube community has seen you fix one of these, you are gonna get many new unwanted beetle customers.
Actually, the guy that set all this up has run a reputable dealership for many years. I've done a lot of work for them. His son(the one that tried to fix it himself)was given this car from his mother-in-law for his daughter. They feel like they need to make the mother-in-law happy by getting it going. I don't think I'll have trouble getting paid. The grandpa who runs the dealership needs me! 😂
If you don't know what you are doing, don't do it. Take it to a shop who knows what the are doing. Just beware you are going to pay through the nose. if I was you, I would fix what I can. Don't bring this car back to me for I won't fix it, You wasted a whole day, when other projects could been done.
Believe me, the labor cost them double what it would have if they'd brought it to me before they ripped it apart. This job probably would have been close to $2k at the dealer and the top still doesn't work.

Sadly, they already have more in it than it's worth.
You certainly cover all the logical parts of diagnosing the problem. You can't fix 'em all. Thanks for sharing with us.
You're welcome, and thank you for watching!

Yeah, I was thinking the front regulators were recalled early on.

Yeah, good luck with that thing.
@@tonyscarcare5657 I keep on top of it plus it's an education every time I fix something....
I'm sure it is!

The window regulator wore out because each and every time you open to close the doors there working
Not the rear quarter windows.
