    After getting kicked out of my home at 17 I moved to the war zone. Only place that was willing to rent to me underage. I commuted to WMHS my senior year. I was able to get a better job a bit later and moved by UNM and eventually went to CNM and UNM. I live in Seattle now about to get my masters. It’s been a long tough road alone but it’s possible. Burque will always be my home. 🙌🏽

    All of my friends that I grew up with there, all of their parents and grandparent have never left abq or New Mexico. Vacation for them is camping near sandia. They NEVER LEAVE. It’s not the land of enchantment, it’s the land of entrapment. Don’t get me wrong, I love my home, abq. But people there need to get out and see the world. Your going to come back anyways, everyone always does, but before you do, the world is AMAZING. Try to see as much of it as you can before you die in the NM desert.

      Rosi Garcia it’s because of poverty it’s a shit state the government doesn’t care only for its weapons and the money that government gets only goes to the military and people who say this guys a bum is stupid try living in New Mexico with native Americans sad by the past and living it everyday knowing that no one will help you it’s a bad state in poverty and native reservations.

      @@alexchavez3244 Theres still more ways to get out. Were given many opportunities but most take them for granted or disregard them, ignoring what they have and pity themselves when it's gone. I'm growing up in schools were kids think it's cool to say fuck school and do all that gang shit but they all depressed and dying. I'm seeing all my friend die and go to jail. I get that America I'd corrupt but so what, that shit is old news. Instead of falling into the system and being another statistic do something about it. It's so easy to give up. I ain't saying your opinions are wrong. All I'm trying to say If someone want to make it then they wouldn't be another statistic, they work hard and get shit done. They live not just survive.

    Frank,
    I just watched all 7 videos on your channel back to back, and I'm glad that UA-cam recommended one of your videos to me. Your channel, your work, it has potential. Keep it up. Not too many good things come out of New Mexico and when they do, well they leave and forget where they come from. Not to many talented people stay and use their gifts and talent to help out their community or home. I like how you are painting Albuquerque in this way, I like how you are representing our home. From one creative to another, keep dreaming and keeping moving forward. This journey is tough but why else were we given these gifts. I hope to see more.

    I’ve lived in ABQ my entire life. ABQ isn’t a terrible city as those make it out to be, what turns people into living such a lifestyle isn’t the city itself. people forget that how you’re raised, influenced, taught, how you observe, and what you’ve experienced through your life is also what determines the kind of life you live, not the location you are brought up in. look at the positives of the land of enchantment before placing judgement.

Instead of going to Lomas, she went to one of those shady used car lots up near Central and Juan Tabo. So we take this Mazda Protege for a test drive with one of the used car salesman. Well he starts giving her directions, we end up in that trailer park on Wyoming and Zuni and he is like park here, he jumps out of the car and comes back like 5 minutes later. He gets back in the car, turns out he went to score some crack and starts loading his crack pipe. I am flipping out. since this is probably the most unprofessional thing I have ever seen any salesman do, plus I am in the car and don't want to go to jail. I told my friend to drive back to the lot because that's where my car is and I want no part of this situation. I couldn't get out of that car fast enough. I not only grew up in the Warzone, I still live here. Each of my brothers and I have college degrees, mine is in Electronics Engineering, theirs are Drafting and mechanical engineering. My block is quite (except for the gun fire we hear almost every night). My neighbors are either retired military, retire law enforcement, retired government, or young professionals raising families. Use to walk to school, walk to Nob Hill, walk to the fair grounds, walk to Kirkland’s open houses. My home was built in the 40’s, and the only new additions are Center Air and the kitchen we just replaced last year.
    While that segment represents a reality of the War Zone, it does not represent the majority of those that live here.

Some of the nicest people I've ever met were on those streets, would never move back now, but still always gonna be a second home.

    The Albuquerque (War Zone) is not as bad as how it once was. I remember in the late 90's the police would be giving chase to vehicles who had criminals that had comitted all crimes. Usually in those early days if you could escape into the war zone police would pull off and not continue the chase for fear of their lives quite frankly.
    Inside that area it was like it's own little city. The area got the name because at night once it got dark it sounded like a real war zone as you could hear gunshots all night. It sounded like the 4rth of July. Morning would come and then there would be a ceasfire. However that did not last long as the gunshots were now happening in the daytime too, heck, night time, day time, any time didn't matter, happening all the time.
    The Albuquerque Police Department was under a lot of scrutiny from the people living in the war zone, around it, and all of Albuquerque. All of the streets that make up the area all open up to Albuquerque's infamous Central ave.
    When it got dark suddenly all kinds of wacky characters emerged onto central which then brought out the drug dealers, druggies, robbers, rapists, murderers, pimps, prostitutes, and many other bottom of the shoe characters.
    The streets back in I believe the early nineties were actually blocked off to make it harder to come in or out of the area. They are still blocked off today. I personally remember people sitting at the bus stop on San Mateo and Central, and the frightened ones if the bus travelling to the heights was missed, well their only choice was to walk past the war zone at night. When all the gang and drug activity was at its worst, these"normal people" were too afraid to cross the area at night, unless a group of them got together and chanced it, or found another way. Sometimes there were some cool dudes that had earned respect in the war zone and if they were heading in that direction, some were cool enough to escort these people across, I know I did it a few times for some people that were afraid to go alone.
    Anyway I do agree with many of the comments I went through and you all are right. We have grown up in a place all our lives here in New Mexico, and with no jobs, everyone hooked on Meth, Heroin, Crack, Prescription Pills, talk to most of them and they'll all say they've lived in there all there lives, and therein lies the problem. Some of these youngsters have barely been out of Albuquerque here and there let alone New Mexico which is one of the worst states to live in. No jobs, education is I believe like 49th worst in the nation, just no opportunities for young people to thrive. The ones that do get an education almost always take it to another state where they are needed and they don't come back. You can't blame them for finding a better life somewhere else. As for the ones that stay and have little education, maybe a drug habit to go with it, they never leave this place and therefore never see that there's a whole world out there. They become stuck and when your stuck, it's difficult to break free.
    Today the "war zone" is not nearly as bad or dangerous as it once was, but that changes quickly from generation to generation.

    • @wheresnormanow693
      @wheresnormanow693 5 років тому +4

      I feel that this area of Albuquerque is transforming. "War Zone" was what it was called over a decade ago and helped contribute to all the bad congregating there. It's actually an international district with over 30 languages spoken. We're seeing new construction (hotels, restaurants, homes, library) and with the new mayor an increase crack-down on crime. Time to stop glorifying those that make short-term bad decisions.
