Another brilliant lecture. So many insights into painting, history, anthropology, and the example of being a good father. Thank you for highlighting the important tradition of art in Latin America, which was never mentioned when I studied art history.
I love how random these videos are. Like, what y’all choose to talk about. I wouldn’t be making art today without Smarthistory. Life would be so boring so thanks for all the hard work!
I just love this painting. Perfect example of a European trained artist, with Caravaggio like influence. Now he moves to the new world, surrounded by a new artistic esthetic and light quality. Eventually the task of decorating churches and alter pieces fall on local artisans that use these type of paintings as templates and evolving into a whole new style we call Spanish colonial. Amazing!
My art history teacher linked your channel in our syllabus and I can't be more thankful. I love the way you explain the art and everything that goes in it. Currently learning about the late Byzantine Empire, yet I love watching all of the content you put out.
I just found this channel and could not be more excited. This was a beautiful introduction to the channel - especially as a Christian myself, I almost took it as a sign - and I can't wait to see what else I can learn about art as I continue watching.
On the priest’s cloak is a detail of little bells. He is a high priest who offered the sacrifice on the Mercy Seat in the Old Temple and prefigures Christ’s future sacrifice. (3:21)
Really loved the video, but one small detail. To call Saint Joseph the "first Christian" is a stretch. The Virgin Mary learned as much before Josephy did, but most would say Mary Magdalene, by being the first to see Christ risen and also the first to spread the news is the first Christian.

I would like to look up the story behind the priest's head wear... looks like red horns, or an egg? Great Painting, tho awful propaganda beneath en meaning. I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!! Thank You!
A beautiful painting made to be propaganda for the continuation of the destruction of indigenous culture. It is too bad they left it at just a few comments about that. The role of the church in "New Spain" is not anything any Christian or good human being can be proud of.
Medicine, education, and the elimination of human sacrifice were brought to New Spain; New Portugal as well. And the Catholic Church has preserved much of the indigenous culture by incorporating into the local liturgies, as can be seen in Central and South America. This process is continuing in Brazil today. If you look at what the Americas were REALLY like before the Spaniards came as opposed to what you WANT it to look like, you will see that there is much I am proud of.

@@katalinjuhasz641 I appreciate your reply, but both Marys were very much Jewish.
I love how the priest just looks straight into your eyes.
Great channel! :)
