There's no doubt that the Sigma is the better lens, although the little RF 1.8 is very good for the price. I think it depends on what you use the lens for. If you're doing formal shoots the Sigma is a no-brainer. But having used both (and don't get me wrong, I LOVE the Sigma), the Canon is miles better if you're walking around, vastly lighter to carry and makes you far less obtrusive. In an ideal world I'd own both.

I'd love to have that - especially with sealing. But the latter won't happen, because it would cannibalize the 50 1.2.. Maybe Sigma will come up with that, though.

I own the rf 50mm f1.8 and the Sigma 50mm f1.4, i went out and shot with both of them on the Canon R6 mk ii and I was amazed the $200 lens was making the sigma look bad. I did notice the colours being a little off on the sigma, so now I know that I need to update my sigma. i was able to fix the colours in the post. I did notice though when you zoom in the nifty 50 was sharper as far as the detail. that has to do with the mount on the canon rf with the glass being closer to the sensor. great video.

Great comparison, thanks! I really like the look and feel of the sigma. It's a shame that it's not sealed - I photograph a lot of dogs and there is water flying around frequently. It's even sadder that the other art primes like the 85 and 105 are actually sealed!
I hope Sigma come up with a 50 1.4 for mirrorless with sealing.

Great comparison! That little 50 did a great job. You also did a great job standing in almost the exact same position for both sets of shots. That part would have driven me nuts. I do wonder if it was fair to add the cost of the adapter against the sigma as most of us have multiple EF lenses that will work on that adapter. I personally don’t use the control ring much (either w/ RF or EF glass) as its position is all over the place across multiple lenses. Anyway, take care.

    • @MyCentsTX

Honestly, the rf was a tad bid sharper, but not by much. I believe Canon is having a labor day sale, so the rf should be close to the price of the ef version this week

That price comparison is totally wrong, the adapter and the dock can be used in many other lenses, besides that, the RF misses the lens hood, witch is pretty important.

    You could and it`s enough.
Because I am not a pro and on a budget but I want top quality I got the 50mm Canon EF f1.2 used. I also have the Eos R body to match it with.
If you make money with your gear you should go for the top glass to up your game. The glass is the most important. For me the nifty fifty is not an option, never has been. It`s that 5% better rendering and that magic a top prime will get that I am after...

Sigma: weight with ef-rf adaptor =1050gr; price with ef-rf adaptor = $1050 US. Canon: 160gr; $150 US. RF 50mm f/1.8 performs a lot better starting at f/2.8. For me, it's a clear choice. I would rather go with Canon EF 50mm f/1.2 and an adaptor for the same price as Sigma. Not a great choice by you IMO.
