that's some insane sharpness from the RF at 1.2. Pretty wild.
That EF 50 1.2L holds up against the RF way better than I was expecting, and it works better on RF cameras because of the superior and more reliable focus system of a mirrorless!
Never been happierwith mine! R6MkII is a perect body for me to shoot EF50mm 1.2l

The EF is awesome. Chromatic aberration showing up at 1.2 over power lines is not how anyone would use this lens. I use this lens for weddings. And although I'm sure I would love to use the RF. I've rented the 85 RF. But you don't need insane sharpness when you're photographing human skin. You would actually want to soften those elements if you pulled out the pores in a bride's face haha.
That RF lens is so nice, but WAY too expensive as are ALL the RF lenses! $3200 plus tax here in Canada for a 50mm prime?! No way! Then say you want the 85, or a zoom, you are looking at nearly $7000 for a couple RF lenses! Jeez Canon, come on!
They are on a par with the ZEISS lenses (and RF has better AF), therefore canon have a good price

Nice review but why do a bokeh test with the 1.2 at 1.4? The RF is crazy sharp all the way out to the corners and the IQ is insanely good. Amazing lens, best 50mm ever made and well worth the money.
thanks for the video. Since canon is clamping down on 3rd parties, the only option I can go is the EF lenses. Just got the Sigma 50 after watching your video.

Fantastic comparison, thank you for taking the time to put this together! I realize this lens was not featured in your review, but would you have any thoughts on the differences between the EF 50 1.4 and the new RF 50 1.8? Worth the tradeoffs to switch over to the RF lens? (already own the EF 50 1.4 - not terribly impressed with it, but I simply cannot justify the price tag of the RF 50 1.2 at this time)
The new RF 50 1.8 is fantastic. I have the RF 50 1.2 and they are much closer than you would think

The Sigma is really shining here. A crazily good buy for these specs. I'm not 100% sure any of these are is less desirable than the EF 1.2L because that has a "look" comparisons like this don't really show. Good job though. Thank you for a great review.
Very nice comparison though not always equal in some sense. Might I ask why compare the vignetting with reduced shutter speed of 1/1600 for the sigma and the canon 50mm f1.4 whilst the ef f1.2 and RF f1.2 had 1/2500? (At 9:20) This would obviously skew the comparison as slowing the shutter speed lets in more light. So was just wondering

I have the Sigma and a 5DIV....I am happy enough...honestly...if I picked up an R5 body...I would just buy the adapter keep using my Sigma...killer lens...spending that much more for the Canon gives very little improvement for the expenditure (+$1600!), over the Sigma in the real world....Is the Canon better...yes...but not $1600 better in my world...if you have a great photo......🙃. My buddy just bought a new Sigma for his Sony E-Mount for $699...you can get the same price for a new Canon copy, as well! 👍🏼
One can buy the 35, 50 and 85 Sigma for the price of the 85 RF lens. RF lenses look better, but not that much better :)
Your money saved buying a cheaper will not stave off lens envy that will ALWAYS be there for the RF series. You can buy nice, or buy twice. There will always be that lingering thought that "this could look even better with that RF lens".

Great video, I think it's a hard decision. I'm going to give you my process to take this decision and where I am... first, I compared the canon 1.4 with the canon 1.2L, the difference in pricing is really big, but may be I would go for the 1.2 just for the quality construction and the extra aperture and a little extra sharpness and better bokeh. So I almost go for the canon 1.2L. But in that moment I discovery the canon RF 1.2, obviously I discard this option for the price (nothing to say here), but what I got from this is that the EF 1.2L isn't the best lens compared with de RF 1.2. So I considered review third party lenses and I found the Sigma 1.4 Art, and I realized that its better than EF 1.2L in almost every category. So great, the best option in this moment is the Sigma. But then I think again among differences of prices between the Sigma 1.4 Art and the Canon 1.4, and the Sigma cost 3 time more than the canon 1.4, and I don't know if is 3 time better... so I'm in the start point :( I don't know which one I should buy :(
Just save and get the RF 1.2 it’s literally the best and perfect 50mm
I had 50 1.2 is a great lens , i don't talk about RF. RF it's simply not for me (for now simply out of budget )
Like people said you have to get R5 or R6 (at least to sustain in time ) wich already a big budget.
I do prefer 6D MK 2 with Sigma 50 mm 1.4
And i have to say that when i put the sigma 50 1.4 on my gh5 it's my best lens (even better than having 18-35 1.8 ) On GH5/GH6 S5 panasonic color science there is something that i do prefer to have the sigma 1.4 instead the canon.
RF lens they are beter in mostly all aspect , but yeah you got to put the money on that . 1 RF = 2 Prime L canon lens.
Imagine getting 85 RF (wich is excellent) but for same price you can buy used sigma 50 1.4 + 85 1.2 II canon + 35 sigma 1.4

You compared the bokeh of the RF at 1.4, not 1.2!! That's a huge error to make in such a video.

The EF 50mm 1.2L is the most interesting and remains an optical masterpiece. It is lighter and less expensive than the RF, the price of which is not justified and its weight is too high. In addition, the RF is too sharp, and that is not what we ask of this type of lens. Canon is seeking to bury the SLR range to favor its new RF toys. For me he can keep them.
This could be a perfect comparison if AF tests were run out too.
The Sigma 1.4 is REALLY impressive with rounder bokeh balls..hard to justify the RF 1.2
The Sigma is about 1/3 of the price of the Canon RF where I live. The Nikon D750 is cheaper than most full frame cameras these days. Would these two make for a good "cheap" combo compared to the Canon EOS R + RF 50mm 1.2? I could sell my D7200 and buy the D750 but I would have to shoot my DX lenses in DX mode which is probably only about 10 MP compared to the 24 MP of my D7200. I don't know if it would be a good move but would love to go full frame and have a lens like the Sigma 50mm 1.4.

I love these comparisons. How was the autofocus speed and accuracy? Canon dslr's sometimes don't hit focus well with the sigma lenses. I do wish autofocus speed and accuracy were tested also, esp with the adapted lenses. But great comparison video.

I'd probably go for the Sigma 50 simply because it's the closest to the RF for less than half the price.

No, it does not. The sharpness is good, but the bokeh is very busy at 1.8 of the nifty fifty

It is still possible to correct the vignetting by setting on the camera, but only for Canon lenses.
It can be done with the Sigmas too now when you update their firmware. Thing is, these corrections only work in JPG and nobody shoots JPG anymore AFAIK. :p
Should be easily fixed with a slight slide in Lightroom, idk why they’re making vignetting a big deal.

Not for this one I thought the 50 1.4 would already be enough of a price gap.
LensProToGo That would have been awesome... The 1.8 is better in sharpness and contrast than the 1.4 - but the bokeh is even less pleasant.....
So best bang for your buck would be the sigma or the ef 1.4. RF is nice but way overpriced with such a small difference in performance.

1.2 V 1.4 ?????? no mention of how you took the images was it all on a EOS R what setting are set for lens correction or not Come one if you wish to do it do it right ALSO you do not add the adaptor to the cost of ONE lens you use it with MANY lens OH your text say 35mm lens it a 50mm

Probably not at this point with the cp3s out but i do plan on doing tests of those.
I rented the rf 50 1.2 and am blown away but 2300 bucks lol im sending it back. Id rather get the sigma 105 1.4 and rf 35 1.8 for that price.
The corners of EF 50 1.2L and 1.4 look sharper than the centre. That doesn't make sense.
yup, and this is exactly why I'm selling my 50 1.2L for a sigma 50 art. the af-nail rate on my 5d4 is terrible and I never shoot wide open. love the size/weight of the 50 1.2 but having sharp/in focus images is crucial for me as a wedding photog.
You’d love the EOS R with eye tracking autofocus, pretty close to 100% hits.

I was surprised by the flaring of the Sigma. Mine completely falls apart with direct sun into the lens. Have always had a paranoid feeling mine is a little broken somehow…

Captain Zouave I own the ef 1.4, the 1.8 and the Milvus. The RF blows all of them away.... It is a different kind of animal. Fullstop!

the Sigma wins with less CA, less vignette, less flaring, and rounder bokeh and is lighter at less than half the money. the Canon only won in corner sharpness wide open, witch for portrait photography doesn't matter at all. and you don't shoot wide open for other types of photography to often.
Old 1.2 bokeh is better, but CA can be heavy. In real life though, you'll hardly ever need to go below 1.6
Not at all, even with the CA which tends to reduce contrast in the bokeh areas and make it look smoother, it's still relatively busy. Many videos on youtube showcase that, especially with the transition zones between sharp and blurry. The RF manages to be both technically superior and artiful in its rendering.
