      That episode is the reality of a lot of white women who develop into abusers and narcissists. It felt extremely true to the consequences of the toxic aspects of western and european society the last hundred years. Beatrice feels a lot like a few of my female relatives.

The whole point of him having to live with everything, his mistakes, his unfortunate twists of life, his new-found loneliness as he’s further from friends then ever before. He has to keep living with himself and who he is as a person while continuing to slowly grow and try to be a better person.

    "We are worthy of forgiveness but we aren't owed it" is a great statement for this show full of great statements. That's the feeling the season finale gave me. People were able to let go of Bojack and his toxicity in different degrees - cutting him completely out like (presumably) Hollyhock or keeping in touch but no longer having him influence their life, like Todd and Princess Carolyn. Diane was able to say goodbye to Bojack, live her own life without him and continue to. Bojack has become a better person than he was before. But his friends and loved ones aren't a reward he gets for doing that. They get to choose to stay or go. And Bojack can just keep living as this better version of himself.

    • @onlydebz
      @onlydebz 4 роки тому +54

      This is an absolutely perfect breakdown and analysis. I also love the direct link between how much less time Bojack has spent with the main cast and the upward trajectory of their lives. Their lives are better without Bojack and that's just a fact the audience has to accept and root for. Bojack can now take his reformed self and try everyday to do better for himself and the people who choose to have him in their life.

    • @fjodorf7341

      I gotta say, even though it made a lot of sense, this part was very sad to me. That his friends would eventually let go of him. But it warmed my heart that Mr. Peanutbutter remained his friend until the very end, and that Bojack could eventually accept and value him as his friend. I feel like Mr. Peanutbutter was the only one who actually *always* believed in Bojack being able to work on his issues. He always saw that there’s something good buried within Bojack while Diane or Princess Carolyn just gave him another chance and then another chance after that ... until they couldn’t take it anymore. Mr. Peanutbutter really loved him with an unconditional and selfless love - like a dog does.

      This is all very well articulated. I’d like to add that maybe Mr. Peanutbutter was only able to remain friends with Bojack because throughout most of the show he wasn’t in his direct line of fire. He was alway kind of doing his own thing. He was definitely affected by BoJack but not to the extent PC and Diane were. (In my opinion)

      I cried too: concept was really creative, performance was outstanding, build-ups were really great executed... but the BGM when Herb says "oh BoJack, there is no other side: this is it", oh man... Also, I realised something: if everything had gone as BoJack planned (Dianne answers the call), it wouldn't have worked: ok Dianne saved you and now you're ok, but now what, What's next? The "goal" of BoJack being saved by Dianne does not feel as an optimal outcome, let alone a closure, but the one where BoJack gets closure with Dianne by saying on the phone with her (and staying with her on the roof and them being thankful for everything they've been through, because I refuse to accept episode 15 as a finale) is a great outcome and closureIf BoJack has taught me something, is that you don't stop dancing 'til the curtain drops, and that's a bittersweet two-way street
      But hey, that's just my humble opinion

    I think there are lots of shows, across many different styles, that try to use heavy, existential themes. The problem is some shows become a little too self indulgent and come off as pretentious even if they were still really good. Evangelion comes to mind. Where all these shows failed to live up to their complete potential Bojack Horseman succeeds. The ONLY complaint I really have about the show is sometimes it got a little too preachy.

      It's not that great. If you're a social butterfly that is sensitive to woke topics and love drama, this is your show. If you're just a normal human being, well, it probably isnt a show for you. sacr3 sacr3 Nah. Disagree. Mostly. I’ll grant you that the woke topics get a little much but the existentialist aspects and writing are done masterfully. Also, what a weird standard you’ve set here. I know plenty of what you consider “normal people” who love this show. You’ve pigeonholed this show into being only for “social butterflies” but I’ve introduced this show to lots of people and pretty much everyone loves it. There’s so much to this show that is wonderfully done. Yeah, maybe the old plumber who lives down the street that watches John Wayne movies on the daily wouldn’t like this show. @@Zeverinsen While I tend to agree, it led to a perfect ending for the show. And Netflix is not out there to produce great TV shows. It is out there to make money in a very tough market. They do what is profitable. And at the moment, that is new shows. It is a shame, but I don't blame them and in the end, it all falls back to what the viewers tune in to. After all, Netflix also made a show like BoJack possible and it has not once lost its quality over six years. The ending is not rushed, it came to a close, it is simply beautiful.

And I don't feel that lonely anymore, because it's on the show, someone else thinks of these problems and as many people resonate with the show I feel even better. I understand now that it's it's okay to be seeking for happiness at the moment when it seems to others that you have everything to be happy. It's okay to have bad emotions and thoughts as far as I'm working on it, it's okay to seek for professional help. God, this show gave me so much! Thank you!!!

      I don't agree.
      Netflix cancelled it, even though the creator specifically asked for a good amount of time to finish the show.
      I'm pretty sure it would've ended before 10 seasons, but it deserved at least 7 to actually wrap up their entire vision.
      Knowing that they did the best they could, but not having the opportunity to make it the best that it could be, makes me more furious.
      Essentially they cut us off from so much we'll never see, and I'll never forgive Netflix for it.

      It's important that things end when they need to. As audience members we usually just keep wanting the good show to continue on in perpetuity as long as it's good. But all stories run out, and it's much better to finish the story while it's good than to just keep it going past its message in order to make money or please fans, that's when it gets stale and fans say "yeah the show kind of fell off after season 4..." then it would have been better to end at season 4 you know?

      from an interview i read with the creator about the ending of the show, apparently he had a couple more themes and characters he wanted to explore and had some ideas for how to do it, but is still overall happy with how the show ended and happy that netflix gave him a long enough heads up so he can wrap the show as best as he could

    • @KJOokami
      @KJOokami 4 роки тому +3

      I definitely think it needed one or two more seasons. Don't get me wrong, I'm very happy with the ending we got. But I feel that they really needed time to explore Bojack's tenure at the college, trying to be a better person and his attempts to develop a relationship with Hollyhock. That way we would have some time to really watch him grow and improve and maybe feel like he's truly heading for a better life; only for everything to come crashing down again one last time. Hollyhock's discovery of his past causing all the ground they made as siblings to shatter and fall away before his eyes, the reporters in the background digging up dirt in his past to drag him back to the reality that he never had to truly face up to some of the *massive* mistakes he'd made. It all would've hit so much harder if we'd had a full season to see his successes in moving on, and the steps he made towards recovery.
      Like I said, I'm completely content with the ending we got, but there was a lot of wasted potential. And while I'm glad Netflix kept to their word and warned the team ahead of time so they could craft a proper ending before the cancellation, I'm still kinda pissed that Netflix lacked the foresight to let Raphael complete the story as he wanted to. Ratings were still incredible, and audiences definitely wanted more, so there's really no excuse for cutting it short just when we were getting to the climax of Bojack's arc.

    That comment near the end about the show articulating experiences that are otherwise difficult to express is so true. It's what made the show so powerful and cathartic to me. I see parts of myself in the characters that I knew were there but couldn't really pinpoint. It helped me feel more normal, like these parts of myself I'd never seen addressed anywhere else before are valid and human. I have struggled with the same tendencies to self-destruct, binge, procrastinate as these characters for most of my life and always felt ashamed of it. For years I wondered what was wrong with me and if anyone else ever experienced these things. Now a clear illustration exists I can point to, that I can use as a frame of reference in my constant marathon to keep on living and become better. The show has definitely helped me and so many other people and is a testament to the power of art to illuminate new facets of the human experience.

      I like RBW's comment about being worthy of grace but not owed it. No one exactly deserves forgiveness, its not something you are entitled too, but it is absolutely necessary for moving forward, and by fighting to change you can perhaps be worthy of it. It makes me think...

    • @bleh329
      @bleh329 4 роки тому

      @@ElvishShellfish No it isn't. What you just said is it's the responsibility of the person wronged to assist the person who wronged them in moving forward. And it isn't. It never was and never will be.
      The person who committed harm is owed absolutely nothing and if they try to apologize and receive no forgiveness then that's just the way it is. What they need to do is continue taking responsibility for the reality of their actions, accept it and move on.

    • @ElvishShellfish
      @ElvishShellfish 4 роки тому +1

      @@bleh329 I uhh... said that we are not entitled to nor owed forgiveness. I agree with you on that point. I think there's something about being human that makes us potentially worthy of forgiveness almost inherently... I dunno, that kind of contradicts what I said earlier. I need to think for myself what the difference is between being worthy of forgiveness and being entitled to it. Like I said, this makes me think.
      Maybe I was sloppy in saying we absolutely need forgiveness to move forward. Absolutely if you want to actually continue to have a relationship with someone after they hurt you, you would need to forgive them, and they would need to own their actions and "turn themselves around" and make the effort to grow. If the relationship doesn't or can't continue, I suppose both parties can go on living life without forgiveness. However, I think for the healing process to complete (as much as possible-hurt may always be there), the hurt person would need to forgive the perpetrator, and the perpetrator would need to forgive himself. Sometimes this is impossible, and there is just a gaping wound left in that part of someone's life, and that's just the way it is.

It's really strange because you can't help but root for him in a weird way. I think maybe he is a better person towards the end of it. All he can do now is just move forward really and try to be a decent person. Hell that's how good the writing is in this show. Because when people make mistakes whether it be minor or terrible that's all we can really do and if needed in some instances try to right wrongs that have been done.

      We can not control most of how people chose to think of us, we can only forgive and chose to treat ourselves well.

    Anyone else think he looks a bit like Herb?
    I don't think we're all deserving of forgiveness. Even if a person works to make themselves better, makes that effort, and actually manages to change, the people they've harmed along the way owe them nothing. And, pending the type of harm, asking someone for forgiveness is asking a lot. And might even risk opening wounds they'd managed to leave behind. It's putting a responsibility on their shoulders on behalf of the person who put a lot on their shoulders in the first place. They now have to carry around this harm, possibly for the rest of their lives. The person who's done wrong has already given them enough responsibility in this way.
    Either way, forgiveness is a religious concept that's trickled down into the version of it we have today. People act as if forgiveness is essential. They'll argue the value of it to the person harmed, both to their benefit and even the benefit to the person who committed the harm. But for the reasons mentioned above, I think doing so is largely inconsiderate and irresponsible.

    It's interesting that he mentions "Say Anything" as the first big turning point of the series.
    To me, Princess Carolyn was always the "heart" of the series.
    She dumps Bojack in the very first episode, continues being his agent and goes on to both care for him and call him out on his behaviour during the series.
    She's also one of the most grounded characters in the series.
    In "Brrap Brrap Pew Pew" (one of the most female-centric episodes where Bojack almost seem like a goofy side-character), she even gets to put Diane in her place.
    She's also the main reason the series doesn't end with a total anti-climax, as she get the most heart-warming ending of all characters in the last season.

    13:05 Freaking A was he right. I had a similar experience with a person that Herb and Bojack had, I was Herb and this guy was Bojack. We kinda were friends but not really, by high school, he was my bully and tormented me, causing me to develop PTSD as a result. He was a horrible guy and this show taught me forgiveness is not owed to anyone and its okay not to forgive so long as it doesn't consume you. And to this, I proudly say I will never forgive this person for all the horrible things he's done to me.

    It's funny to imagine the director of the underwater episode going through a factory with a timer and a baby
