He didn't fix anything with Hollyhock - she hates him now & rightfully so; in fact, Beatrice is the reason Hollyhock had a good life. Also, I never let Beatrice off the hook for her abusive behaviour, my point was that Bojack could have gotten back at her while she was still herself, not when she was a very vulnerable Alzheimer's patient who barely remembers who she is.
That poem, "This Be The Verse", kinda hit me, because it's like a nega-version of something I remember my mother once saying; she said how, when her parents were growing up, they didn't have a lot of food and would often go hungry, so when they became parents, they always made sure their kids had enough to eat. My mother, in turn, would often lament that her parents rarely took her out travelling, seeing the world, have exciting experiences, so growing, my mom would often take me and my siblings on vacations to different countries, always making sure to plan a lot of sightseeing. She concluded that she thinks it's the responsibility of parents to give their children the thing they found missing in their own childhood
The underwater one (somebody remind me), Time’s Arrow, Free Churro and the view from halfway down are some of the best Bojack episodes in my opinion because they’re so unique and use their own standalone methods of story telling to convey their story ideas.
When I first watched this shows, it was far and away my favourite TV show of all time, and i was absolutely blown away by complexities, characters, and story telling throughout the show. But after watching a bunch of your videos about the show, my amazement about the show just keeps on growing. I’m more and more impressed by Bojack by the day it seems
The sadcom in bojack horseman I feel you. Have to fight harder than anything to escape from the past of what your parents did to u, even though some parts will still follow you. You must choice to tell your own story by actually living and not be held by someone else's standards

Coincidentally, I had paused this video to send an offer to a friend to work with her to untangle some knots, which I planned to start by asking about events in her formative years and significant characters. I had known there was some backing to the idea, working backwards from the very idea of trauma, but I was unaware there was a technical term for persona history oriented psychology. I remember reading that poem as a kid, probably was one of the first I ever learned. It perfectly described my situation growing up (born to a pair of drug-addicted physically abusive assholes), and at the time confirmed my own belief that I should never have my own kids. It's pretty powerful.

I found that there was a big disconnect from the body of your video being a small psychoanalysis of bojack then suddenly “segwayed” to your thesis of the writers and how they used their life as inspiration. Were you referencing the arc of the show where bojack while having a traumatic life turns it to inspiration? If so then there was a big disconnect in your video. If not, can anyone mention what was the whole idea is with the content and its sequencing in mind?
sometimes I feel gloomy exactly because I can remembre what happend to me, since I was little I learnd to put bad memories in the oblivion, forgeting all and don´t make questions now that i feel like to try to let those things out I just get with my closers telling me i should forget, gaslighting or making me feel like I am the one to blame and i don´t what to blame anyone i just would like to late those things clear. I don´t feel like I own myself.

I love this show for many reasons but one of the biggest ones is just how personal it gets. The part that gets to me the most is the episode where Bojack convinces Kelsey to shoot the White House scene where it is revealed that Bojack can’t cry in front of other people, the same thing happened to me and I always tear up when Bojack is finally alone and cries his eyes out. I have had a lot of moments just like that one so I know how heartbroken Bojack must’ve been in that moment. It’s one of my favorite scenes in tv history.

DAMN this video is next-level quality. I’m so glad I could find a video exploring these episodes because they impressed me so much. I’m a neuroscience and psychology major who works with patients with dementia and is studying to eventually become a psychiatrist. It is so rare that you find a show that is so good with realistic depictions of mental health and psychology, and Bojack had been killing it on that front since the time it started, but season 4 really kicked things up a notch. I was floored by how great the writing was and how topics like the ripple effects of generations of trauma, the experience of neurodegenerarion during dementia, and the terrors of PTSD were handled. It was so cool to hear a breakdown of the inspiration for these episodes as well as an analysis of how the writing worked so well. I’ve long since given up trying to be a writer but I am an actress and many of the pieces of advice you gave (especially “draw off of personal experience to make what you create authentic”) hold just as true for acting. Excellent video, man! I enjoyed it a lot.

Both are correct. We are responsible for our own actions, but we are not wholly pure of nor immune to the influence of others. We can internalize behaviors from our parents or caregivers as early as ages 2-5. Child psychology is a fairly recent but astonishing field, especially when it comes to intergenerational trauma.

Your video made my eyes wet. I, too, deeply enjoy personal / dramatic stories framed within principles of psychology. Prior to watching this video, I had never heard of Time's Arrow. Now that I know what it is, it's (put simply) my life creed. Explains why this is my fav Bojack episode of all time. It was breathtaking to be a witness to Beatrice - the misogyny, the invalidation, the downright mutilation! It was horrifying and unspeakable, and by the end of it, I was heartbroken for the main villain of Bojack's life. And as the saying goes: hurt people hurt people. So Beatrice's pain became Bojack's pain which in turn became Sarah Lynn's (she was undoubtedly Bojack's spiritual child - his first as the Selfish parent while he was young, unaware, unformed - in contrast to Hollyhock who was the child to his Responsible parent, and the one he perceived as the path to his amends). The last thing I wanted to share is that I don't think Beatrice was warning Henrietta about not damaging her baby. Her anger was directed at Butterscotch and how she felt he had squandered her. We can assume at the time that she still hadn't reconciled with her role in, and contribution to Bojack's complexes yet. If she had, she would probably have striven to be a better mother from that point on (I did not see any such attempts). It is only later while pining for her baby in her dementia that we finally see how she might possibly have had some measure of regret around her parenting choices. Beatrice is a tragic character. An intelligent, well-read person born into the wrong family in the wrong era. She is the poster child of all our unfulfilled potentials.

My story is horrible. It's boring, it's depressing, and it goes nowhere. Nobody wants to read that shit. Stuff that's based on my life has no market, just teach me how to write something that people would actually pay money for like all those hollywood phonies who keep making bank year after year while I'm reduced to making annoyed comment noises on social media.
If you just want to make money, study what's on Amazon's Top 100 list for a while. There are themes and trends. There are writing groups you can join to help you out. It can be done. If you want to write and don't care about making money (which might need to happen after you've made money already), go ahead and finish this story. Let it be what it is. Learn from it. Figure it out. Then keep going. The story doesn't have to be perfect, or good or exciting or hopeful or even profitable - it just has to be finished and made available.
I'm also a writer with a formal education in psychology! I often wonder how people can be writers without some loose grasp on psychology, because the two intersect so often and so well.

Sugarcoat, Sugarmann... was that intentional? Could Beatrice’s family be constantly glazing over atrocious events so that they could have some semblance of what they perceive as alright? American Exceptionalism, War, Greivances, Bittersweet resentments formed from rose tinted negligence that echoed for generations. I distrust this parent blaming psychology. From my own experience, my pathological behaviour turned out to be my own.

Explains why this is my fav Bojack episode of all time. It was breathtaking to be a witness to Beatrice - the misogyny, the invalidation, the downright mutilation! It was horrifying and unspeakable, and by the end of it, I was heartbroken for the main villain of Bojack's life.
And as the saying goes: hurt people hurt people. So Beatrice's pain became Bojack's pain which in turn became Sarah Lynn's (she was undoubtedly Bojack's spiritual child - his first as the Selfish parent while he was young, unaware, unformed - in contrast to Hollyhock who was the child to his Responsible parent, and the one he perceived as the path to his amends).
The last thing I wanted to share is that I don't think Beatrice was warning Henrietta about not damaging her baby. Her anger was directed at Butterscotch and how she felt he had squandered her. We can assume at the time that she still hadn't reconciled with her role in, and contribution to Bojack's complexes yet. If she had, she would probably have striven to be a better mother from that point on (I did not see any such attempts).
It is only later while pining for her baby in her dementia that we finally see how she might possibly have had some measure of regret around her parenting choices.
Beatrice is a tragic character. An intelligent, well-read person born into the wrong family in the wrong era. She is the poster child of all our unfulfilled potentials.

My story is horrible. It's boring, it's depressing, and it goes nowhere. Nobody wants to read that shit. Stuff that's based on my life has no market, just teach me how to write something that people would actually pay money for like all those hollywood phonies who keep making bank year after year while I'm reduced to making annoyed comment noises on social media.
If you just want to make money, study what's on Amazon's Top 100 list for a while. There are themes and trends. There are writing groups you can join to help you out. It can be done.
If you want to write and don't care about making money (which might need to happen after you've made money already), go ahead and finish this story. Let it be what it is. Learn from it. Figure it out. Then keep going.
The story doesn't have to be perfect, or good or exciting or hopeful or even profitable - it just has to be finished and made available.

YOOOOOOO i THOUGHT someone working on this show must have had some familiarity with this be the verse! that poem holds a special place in my heart. its the one my english teacher used when we started our poetry unit to get a bunch of teenagers that thought this shit was stupid to get into it! that first line hooked everyone right in. "YOU CAN SWEAR IN THESE THINGS???"
