  • One of the pilots Arnie is given the task to navigate a tricky DC-3 landing on a makeshift sand strip. Normally these pilots are used to icy landings but the sand can be far more dangerous. Chuck battles to control a temperamental power unit, and Rod's wife goes into labour.

Chuck is the kind of person I always hope I get as a mentor. He may be grumpy, he may be irritable sometimes, but holy hell does he really know wtf he's doing, and you can learn loads.

Chuck reminds me of an ole mechanic at a company I use to work at. There wasn't a problem that you could bring that man that he couldn't figure out within a few hours of diagnosing it. Chuck's the kind of man you WANT to have repairing your equipment!

It is also surprising to me. There atlist one very skilled mechanics in every organization. Unfortunately with all that skill most of them stay emoyed until they retire than starting their own bussiness.

Arnie was a very good friend of Joe. This movie is one testament to his caring for Bufallo. His job was piloting that beast DC3 but he negotiate and secure a side bussiness that will compensate to the flight.

There was a DC3 that did trips to the smaller islands of Honduras, by landing on the beach. Sand, at least beach sand, no problem. 😊

@@kingruk86 DC's can use the ice Ski attachments to land on sand. When you pack sand down with something wide and flat like a Ski from a plane, it acts no different than ice, or snow, if not even better due to the extra density of the sand.

30k to fly to fix the apu? Have chuck talk to the other mechanic to ask a few questions to maybe get a rough idea of the problem, bring some spare parts, some tools with the small 2 engine Cessna that burns 25 gallons per hour not 200 like a dc3 with literally the same cruise speed so 1/8 the fuel burn, less oil, only need one pilot. Have the other apu flown in by the next morning

The L-188, such a remarkable airliner of its day. They must have been incredible when they first came out. They have some design features better than today's jet aircraft.
They have an elegance like no other aircraft of that era, all the way down to their 'cricket bat' props.
They were not good gliders though on account of their short wing span, with minimal clear wing length unobstructed by prop drag in a dead stick landing.
Their initial safety record was not terrific as a consequence of their #1 & #4 engine mounts vibrating into disintegration causing the outboard wing the fail also.
Apart from that an absolute beauty. A lady far more deserving of a gentleman's touch as she has with her flight crews than that deplorable arrogant and obnoxious shmuck 'Chuck'!
I never appreciated just how large the flight decks are on them, almost comparable to a B767, certainly a great deal more capacious than a B737.

I love how Chuck isn't happy about having to fly up and fix the APU... Isn't it his job to check and overhaul these things when they're on their maintenance cycle, so they won't break down in the field? I mean the igniter was fouled by carbon buildup. That's not something that just breaks, that's something that builds up over a long time. That's something he, or his crew, should have caught - and yet he's mad at everyone else for it.
