Be honest, you randomly found this channel and now you are addicted to watching these videos
So true
Yes...
Nope. Did not happen.
You're right and It was a decent recommendation from youtube
I didnt found randomly i had searched for i shouldnt be alive which was broadcasted on discovery
If you've decided to live in that type of climate, and you don't understand that there will sometimes be delays, in receiving your food and supplies from vintage aircraft, that have to operate in -40F degree temperatures,,then you shouldn't have moved there in the first place. These mechanics, pilots, loading crews, and managers,, are miracle workers.
@@just10NU At minus 40 degrees both Fahrenheit and Celsius are the same.
Most of the populations of those small villages didn’t “move” there; they are indigenous to the area and their families have lived there forever.
Agree.
Working on an engine in the deep freeze without a hanger seems just plain wrong .
idk kinda reminds me of the Military lol
Tough people! Wow!
They couldn't pay me enough to work in those conditions.
@@bmacd2112 Also, these isolated communities are expensive to live AF.
@@jstevinik3261 Actually theyre not, at all.
well when people see this episode they will understand how much effort it takes to run a business like this but buffalo's air frieght needs better backup for delivering
@Pandacat 666 New planes and training cost a lot and when you have to fly toilet paper to thoose towns profit margins are tight. Usually thoose airlines are getting paid by the government to fly there because no one wants to do it. Also you can't find newer small cargo planes that can land on thoose airstrips.
at least they have Electra right now. this is too good to hear😂
@Pandacat 666 these aircraft are rugged and well suited for the task at hand. they are tail draggers which is better on these surfaces. a possible replacement is a basler BT67, which is a re-engined and remanufactured C47/DC3. the problem is they are uber expensive.
@Pandacat 666 not to mention the conditions these things are operated in. a brand new airplane would have issues
@Pandacat 666 that's a stupid remark from someone who has never been around radial aircraft engines. they have skills associated with working on them too.
why do they use them? they are affordable, they do the job well, and they are very rugged. the DC3/C47 is legendary, a modern replacement is the same air-frame converted to turbo prop. very expensive. look up basler.
mikey o'brien goes into the economics of their operation in a video on "plane saves". a basler is a million dollar aircraft
Man, oh man, after flying professionally in Alaska for 18 years, where winter-dramas like this were almost daily occurrences, it's a real pleasure to be retired and sitting down here in relatively-warmer Eastern Oregon -- even in mid-November! . . . counting my blessings with an attitude of gratitude.
I like that”attitude of gratitude”. I just retired after 38 years of flying corporate but grew up around old round motor airplanes in Chino Ca.
Buffalo is an airline we don't know much about in Canada but it's a unusual airline just to say the least
The plane that saved buffalo 😳
Couldn't pay me to live that far north
At 4:24 Scott's imitation of the C-46 engine start up is spot on. When you love the sounds that airplanes make, you are a true avgeek!
I had the good fortune of flying on one of those aircraft once. That was back in the 80's in the Philippines where it was used for island hopping. It vibrated so badly that to this day I'm still loosing teeth. Such fond memories. I would love to fly in one again.
Seems Mike isn't a very good manager. That backup plane should always be primed and ready to go in the cold Xmas season. That's what has caused the biggest problem
Mike is immature and I don't think he really wants to be there. Its because of the family thing he would be ridiculed by the rest of the family if he wasn't. You can tell by his plodding no urgency and smirking face that he just goes with the flow.
Wow, these people are amazing. When I was young in Northern MN I used to work on my snowmobile outside in bad conditions, but nothing like that!
Most people fortunately will never know what -40 and some wind feels like, but I do.
Bull****. People in the north stock up on food that's been delivered by truck long before winter starts and never have to rely on super expensive supplies delivered by air.
There few roads. Look up ice road truckers.
So you think this whole video is fake? Because you know better? Even though you don't?
So what are they delivering to? Father bloody Christmas?
It appears they have to many chiefs and not enough Indians.
could call them braves minus temps.
How those ppl can complain about the delay of their food delivery, when willingly live there, and it's December!
Agreed! Seems like a very risky choice to live in such an area!
i know how these guys feel about the cold. I worked for a company installing alarm systems and sattelite dishes. We got a call for a dish install in the bay of fundy. It was minus 48 not including the wind coming off the bay. For what was usually a half hour job (yes we were fast and Happy to do the job) It took us almost 6 hours we had to keep switching off to climb the ladder onto the roof turn one of the 6 bolts around 3 times and had to get off the roof and go in the customers trailer. That was the coldest i have ever been and i live in canada
was it a good paying job? was it worth it? i couldnt. im so cold natured. youre a tough one.
I think the people in the small town should calm down about their Christmas presents and plan ahead for planes breaking down. Buy a huge bag of rice, some potatoes, oil, frozen veg and meat, etc. They choose to live in a place where they are dependent on these planes, so it's on them to take responsibility for that.
that...is what 'adults' do
I've watched so much from this channel that in my dreams, I've dreamt of purchasing a plane.
Combination of ice road truckers and orange county choppers.
Brave men to fly these old planes and in that cold, yikes... Real tough dudes, heroes to those towns people.
Absolutely!!!!!
Those old planes are the only ones that can handle that cold
how are these communities paying for all this fuel. they must be sitting on a gold mine
The taxpayers of Canada are paying for all of it. Pure subsidy.

17:32 "I'm a professional alcoholic" best thing I've ever heard
i like these series
The most impressive thing in this episode is that old f150 pulling the airplane….IN REVERSE
Ford owners looking smug.
I’m an automotive technician and shop owner in upstate ny. I think it’s bad when it’s 20 degrees Fahrenheit and snowing. I don’t so much as want to walk outside to get another car to pull into the shop, I don’t even want to go outside to get the mail and these boys like chuck are replacing an engine outside in colder weather then im ever dealing with. If someone wanted me to install an engine outside in the cold I would have to be making some incredible amount of money im talking hundreds of dollars per hour maybe more. I would want to leave the plane there until it was warmer outside I just couldn’t see putting anyone through that. What I would do is make a big tent for situations like this so the guys get out of the elements a bit kinda surprised they don’t have something like that it’s just insane to be doing work in cold like that. Obviously they would need to use a different heat source as you can’t have the guys breathing in the fumes from the heaters they use but that’s not a big deal
Watching this again Chuck
Should have took the engine off before the new engine came.. he bitched it took 4 days to get the new engine but he waited until the new engine came to remove the old engine? What a waste of time
4:24 is the best impression of a radial engine starting up I've ever heard
Hilarious ! 😀😀
I remember when I saw Scott doing this the first time i died of laughter 🤣
I miss this series. I wish they could have made more episodes.
Why did they stop?
Gotta be Scary flying that ole plane, especially when they're always taking it apart and putting it back together due to the cold.
Yeah. The conflict between profit and good safety margins is a bit scary too. A lot of accidents are caused by cost cutting on repairs and maintenance. With lots of staff stressed to the point of quitting, Buffalo Airways seems to have more than enough pressure to cut corners on safety. Alaska Air flight 261 is a good example and Wonder has an episode about it. Nearly all Wonder episodes involve people dying except this one. Maybe Wonder anticipates a plane crash in Northern Canada involving an air transport service like the one in this episode. If Buffalo Airways has a crash in the next few years, Wonder will be more ready than ever now.
I regularely jumped out from a about 60 year old plane (Utva 66), I was happy never to have to land in it hahah
@@IARRCSim yea, I've watched all those videos on wonder, another reason why I haven't ever flown lol
Wow how long has WONDER been back, I thought they d gone for good, I've really missed their documentaries. Great I'm elated to find this channel again.

Sounds like buffalo really needs new aircraft, or shut down.
Lot of drama, some very drama type folk working this outfit.
I enjoy this show but man the nonsense BS drama is just ridiculous.

Just ridiculous living conditions.
4:23 was by far the best impersonation of an engine start ever.
And best reason to fly 🎉
These mechanics are seriously hardcore
I not sure how I went from a Crime Investigation binge to Aviation Investigation binge XD
Strangely its all I been watching lately I don't know why !
It must be ridiculously expensive to live that far North. How do people pay for all that air transportation up there? Ship, train, and truck are all far cheaper and available in the more densely populated parts of Canada.
I ask myself the same thing when I watch stuff like this and the Australian outback truckers.
My dad would travel to Yellowknife and every other weekend in tiny planes like this for his job. Jesus.
Great story, reminds me of my time way up north. Thanks
I hope Chuck is doing now stand up comic, he is hilarius 🤣🤣🤣 👏👏👏, he ´ ll get rich.
please post more ice pilots episodes i love this show
Love this show thank u upload
"Bad luck strikes again" - It's not bad luck. These planes are really cool but they're too old to be practical, particularly at these temperatures.
I didn't have a problem in the world until I started watching this, now I'm in the bath with a toster.
Versions or descendents of the Electra are being used now by by Canadian forces as the Aurora.
ayy i like these
Also why dont they upgrade to newer aircraft
one word money
@@petterderter6354 while true. The reason why the company itself doesn't is "it can't". The plane to upgrade to doesn't exist. The reason? There's not enough money to make a newer plane that meets all the minimum requirements to replace the older ones.
@@6th_Army - Then it sounds like eventually there just won't be any way for transporting food and supplies, except maybe my dog sled. It was said in the beginning of this program, when the parts are gone, no more planes.
@@CanYouRememberWhen Yeqj, that's the unfortunate truth.
@@6th_Army That's not particularly true, there are other aircraft capable of servicing these routes, I believe ATR-72s, Hercs and Q400s aren't uncommon up there. From what I've read I'm guessing Buffalo just has a good cost structure, little to no payments on aircraft, only expense to fly is O&M, hell they even save on ground crew by making pilots do that work. They likely undercut pretty heavily on contracts.
Pilots concerns for an unscheduled overnight - will there be entertainment and nightlife.
Engineers concern for an unscheduled overnight - will I have a bed and something to eat.
In that kind of cold you're hands hurt, and I do mean HURT!
They won't starve. They'll just start blubbering
Chuck the mechanic certainly earns his pay!
Wow! They got balls! Not me!
Let’s hope they get at least some good days without all the problems.
Why didn't they take the broken engine out while waiting for new engine.
I get the whole thing of the old planes, the passion & love etc... but that company is living on broken limbs... so much investment into repairs so much time lost so little reliability... at the end of the day I was like man buy a new airplane
Because despite what this particular segment is about in terms of replacing an engine, you can't find a more reliable airplane for these rugged conditions, that can haul the freight and weight needed, and can withstand the brutal conditions sitting on a tarmac all night in temperatures below -40F for days, and be able to turn over with little struggle when needed and get in the air again.
Most modern planes just aren't cut out for this type of abuse, especially jet engines. The smallest amounts of ice can cause a jet engine to completely fail on you, refuse to start, and can take hours more to get going.
Most other planes that are made for these kind of conditions simply don't have the carrying capacity and weight required, and nobody is really making these types of planes because the demand is so low.
Their next best bet if this old bird does die again and they don't have the parts, is attempt to buy some old C-130's from the USAF. They have hundreds of them in reserve, and I believe the parts are not as rare.
“I turn gay and you’re it.”
- CHUCK
Surely they have a hydraulic pressure gauge...
What happens when the parts for the C-46 run out, what happens then?????…….Airplanes like the Lockheed Electra???
Nobody's going to starve. I went 21 days without food, by choice.
How do they live that harsh life?!!Great people!
“All you have to do is get it up”.
Chuck 😂😂😂😂
Cargo comp any up here in Anchorage Alaska EverettsAir Cargo still flies a pair of C-46s and they also have 1 or 2 used to deliver fuel
and I am back again :)
I didn't get any notification about you reply in my comment lol it was like 5 days back but I am super happy that you noticed my comment.
Kelly died in 2017
How do you not love Scott?? 😀
BA should really contact the USAF to acquire a few C-130's from their reserve yards
A C-130 can’t land on most of the landing strips Buffalo delivers to, but the C-46 can. That’s the catch.
It looks like I found another Brooks, pilot. It seems to run in our family tree. Uncles were pilots ,Dad was a pilot and so am I.

hope he reads this and takes a look from the outside as to what hes doing.
Im sure he will take advice from someone who can't spell, has no experience in the industry, and has no idea what they're talking about.
I have heard of an outfit using a 40, 40, 40 no fly rule: -40 deg F or less, 40 mph or greater wind, and 40 feet or less visibility. Anyone else using it?
"Im a proffesional alcoholic, and that is beginner beer" lol
Watching from Philippines...thumbs up Ice pilots.... 👍👍👍👍
I know these videos are a few years old but this is not a sustainable business model. Running 1920-1040 designed engine's in -40F weather is not sustainable. As has been proven by their inability to get one airplane going, let alone leaving airplanes out in the weather then thinking you can bring a totally frozen multiengine turboprop out of a snowbank where it's been sitting for God knows how long and just start hauling freight. You're not going to get away with that with modern aircraft let alone antiques. Also why don't these isolated communities band together and have a warehouse full of non-perishable food and supplies for just these types of events that they can distribute supplies to the villagers.
You would think the elders of these communities would sit down and plan out emergency response plans. I've been in the arctic several times myself in my youth and sadly their culture just doesn't work that way. I was in Fort Franklin up on Great Bear Lake many years ago and noticed a brand new American LaFrance fire engine pulled half way off the side of the road (they had widened the road so you could get past the fire engine. ). It turns out this fire engine two years in the planning shipped by rail across Canada, then by barge in the summer to the village. Of course this was a huge event so the chief of the village hops in and proceeds to celebrate the new fire engine by driving through the town lights and sirens going until the engine seized up! No one had bothered to lift the hood or read the placards that read, shipped without fluids or oil to avoid environmental spillage. Vehicle must be fully serviced prior to starting. Two years later the village received another new fire engine. Of course it was a different brand and model so they couldn't cannibalize the first one for parts.
W/ab the cameraman!? How does he feel?
Kelly was a nice lady, but I don’t agree with her and how she prevented the boys from flying home that night. It’s easy for her to do something like that when she’s at home in her own house with her family, using her own bed. But that was not any of her business.
What about investing a bit in easy to install electric de-icing/heater systems...??
They won't starve! It's reality show again. The military would deliver the supply if needed.
Keep up harvesting seals out of Yellowknife “Great Slave”! I love Stink-Flipper!
@Wonder. Why is the video of Lockerbie turned of for my region? Surely it’s full of fake information if you turned it off for Scotland.
The Electra is flown by the Canadian Forces as the CP 140 and the US as the P3
Just a fun fact
Poor TXW :( It was nice to see her fly in this episode.
(For those that don't know, TXW had a forced landing a few years ago and was damaged beyond repair. No one killed)
The turbo prop one?
You mean the Elektra right? I always thought they got her back
If you live there you kinda deserve delays your it the worst parts of Canada
lol love how the natives whine about no fresh produce to eat ... ive yet to see one eat fresh produce all they eat is potato chips candy and soda.. oh .. and Timmys donuts..
I think they have C-130 Hercules now. Great plane.
while watching this video one of my pc mouse broke so i got another brokin one that i liked more and since i was at a scene with chuck i remembered how in one episode he hit the engine and it started working apparently it works for pc mouses to
Sounds like someone woth the right tools could make a small proffet manufacturing parts for these old work horses.
Bufalo needs a new C130 but it operates with a very old C46.
What do they do, at the four isolated communities? Or, why are they there, mining or something?
How does Transport Canada approve 80 year old aircraft
