I have great childhood memories flying in DC-3s between Sucre and Cochabamba, Bolivia in the 1950s. The Bolivian airline, Lloyd Aèreo Boliviano, maintained a zero accident record year after year in those days, running these reliable and beautiful birds. Often the pilot would invite us elementary school kids into the cockpit in flight. So great to get the cockpit view again with this beautiful video!
That's gotta hurt letting such a beautiful & Historical Aircraft go. I can't imagine even owning one let alone letting it go. What a gorgeous old Girl. Makes me sad from a kid who grew up around them in Australia. Cheers. Thank you Dan, Leo.
DC-3.....first plane I ever flew in back around 1949-50 out of Atlanta GA when I was six. My Dad flew it part of the flight and never had a piolet's license. What a great memory.
I was a passenger in a DC-3 in 1962 (I was 7) along with my entire family on the way to Little Rock, AR from Newark airport. My dad was ordered to Ft. Chaffee. My brother Nelson and I fought for the window seat to watch the exhaust blow out red-blue fire from the exhaust pipe. It was so exciting. I love the DC-3, every time I see one on U-Tube it brings back memories.
The DC-3, one of the greatest aircraft ever conceived, built, developed and flown to renown. They are still out there, serving steadily. Got a little stick time in one years ago and marveled at how graciously it flew, handling like a Cessna 172, albeit a bit heavier in the controls. A pilot’s airplane, to be sure.
My all-time favourite aircraft. My uncle flew a DC-3 in the Berlin Airlift, and I had the chance to take a ride in one in the late 1980's, here in the UK. When I boarded for what was a pleasure flight, I was greeted by two flight attendants, dressed in 1940's period uniforms, and Glenn Miller's 'In the Mood' was playing over the intercom,Perfect !
As a kid, I can remember Central Airlines leaving Borger TX every afternoon around 4 in a DC-3. After school I would hurry to a point that I could clearly see the plane. I'll never forget the shape of the wings as I looked at the belly of the plane as he banked to the east, headed to Woodward OK and Wichita KS. Funny story, about 10 years ago I was talking to a lady in OKC at one of the grandkids football games. She asked where I was from and when I told her I grew up in Borger TX, she told me that her dad used to fly out of there with Central. I'm sure I watched him.
Hello Dan, Where I worked as a Paramedic "Williston lake BC" We did most of our medivacs in a single pilot DC3. I trusted our Pilot and the old tail dragger. I'm sorry you have to hang up and let her go. For every story both good and bad, there is an ending. Happened to me too, so all that's left to say is "Thank you for your service".
You're liv'n the life when you have your own DC-3 as a toy! I can't imagine the work you must have put into it. Glad there's still people around that can keep these old birds alive.
Simply Beautiful...! That was one of your BEST DAN... Also did like the fact, that the actual checklist begins with glasses ON... Then 1,2,3... Great that you have been blessed for 24 years with that great plane...
Its all good! Very well filmed. Great production. Great airplane. One gripe: when the DC-3 passes over the runway camera, stop the music so we can get the beauty's sound. 👍
My brother was a pilot in the USAF and flew EC-47s in Vietnam doing electronic intelligence (ELINT) gathering. He was awarded a Distinguished Flying Cross and an Air Medal with two oak leaf clusters. Very proud of him.
What a beautiful bird you will still fly many times in your mind as you enjoy wonderful memories. And you know what time it is now it's time to start lookin around!!
In the 70s, before I flew the B52 back in the states, I flew an EC47 (DC3 with war paint) out of DaNang Vietnam. Probably before the guy in this video was born. Great Job man. Great plane...
Cool! My brother flew EC-47s with the 360th TEWS out of Tan Son Nhut. When he came back he was a T-37 IP and then when he separated became a SAR pilot, first flying Hueys and then HH-3s. He said when he went to the flight deck he would always look at the manufacturer's plate and without exception every ac he flew was built before he was born. 🙂
Easily one of the coolest aircraft ever!! Amazing how many of these are in daily working use. I lived in Long Beach CA, and they regularly make daily air cargo flights to Catalina Island out of Long Beach airport. Always a thrill to see them and hear those Pratt & Whitneys humming! Cheers Captain!!
Seems the merger with McDonnell did the same thing to Douglas what the MD merger did to Boeing . Douglas aircraft went from a prestigious engineering firm to being part of a company obsessed with cost cutting.
At :28 seconds into this video, note the ridge extending from the trailing edge to the leading edge of the left wing. That ridge is a cover for the 328 machine bolts that attach the outer wing panel to the wing center section. The DC-3 does not have a wing tip to wing tip spar and these bolts are the substitute. Because the DC-3 does not have a wing spar, it is only certified for a .75 negative Gs.
I grew up watching DC 3. coming straight at my house. The center of our picture window was aligned with the middle of the runway. Hawthorne College, had three of them at one time. Hawthorne Feather is a short runway and they had to use our field for proper lift off. Unforgettably when the College moved the aviation division to Florida, the last DC 3 crashed at take off, because the pilot had never flown out of a short runway and didn't get the memo to use our field for maxim lift. We no longer own the house, I miss the planes so much. Thanks Dan.
A buddy of mine cherishes an old photo taken when he was in (what seems to be a C-5/DC3) one - as a band leader many moons back - Raphael Nunez - a true Mexican Troubadour up here in Canada for decades.. The photo was scratched & creased, so he asked me to retouch it for him.. My pleasure, as I was able to study the details inside! hehe
That was a great video Dan, I love the music, it was very somber and almost sad, it also shows how much you love the DC-3. Thank you for sharing this ride with us.
whooooooaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!! My absolute FAVOURITE PLANE on the planet!!! I had the rare chance to actually fly in one as a yute from Montreal to Halifax many moons ago.. I remember having to use the backs of seats to help pull me up the isle! Too, the night prior, I watch as movie that featured an airplane that had one of it's props shear off & slice through the fuselage - when I was picking a seat - I avoided the ones in direct line with the prop. Thanks for sharing this video!!!!! I thought this was just some FLIGHT SIM footage - but was pleasantly surprised to see this is the REAL THING! Ya ever need a copilot - I'd be happy to sit-in - well at least as an enthusiastic navigator! ^_^ Awesome!
That was so awesome! I dream of getting to fly a DC3 someday. My dad's first airline flight was on a DC3 in eastern Germany. He was born in 1947. I was hoping to someday soon get a chance to go with him to visit you Dan and pay for the DC3 checkout. That's another reminder to never wait until it's too late.
Nice footage, and brings back memories. When I was working on C-47s in Timmins, (back in the late 1970s!) I always drove from the left seat, though. Thanks for the video!
Not so " itty-bitty" anymore. Great job growing the channel. Better yet....AQP! And yes, the DC-3 is a beautiful aircraft. Maybe thinkin something with 4 engines?? Keep up the good work, and fighting the good fight. Thanks.
I´ve only ever flown single engine aircraft, I must say when I watch this I am envious, that must be such a blast to fly such a beautiful aeroplane, a lucky guy ❤
the biggest issue I have with this I always taught do your runup prior to taking the runway, if you set in position and do the run up and brief it gives another airplane time to come into the pattern and maybe try to land over you, I want to be able to see the pattern as I take the runway.
Fantastic video Dan. I just love the DC3, probably one of the most beautiful planes ever built. Thanks for sharing. Best Wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya
The first plane ride I ever had was in a DC 3 in1968 from Winnipeg to Gillam Manitoba I never knew the esteem that the DC 3 had in the world of flying /// I HAVE NEVER BEEM FORTUNATE ENOUGH to experience it again . I only flew in one, once. I missed a connection heading home, and I had two very unattractive choices: Ground Transportation (hours of driving) or wait until morning, taking a hard plastic nap in Denver. Suddenly, something came up: a skeleton crew (pilot, co-pilot & one flight attendant) were MOVING A PLANE down to CO SPGS in the wee hours. I eagerly agreed to ride along, and wound up alone in a 1940s vintage DC-3. The seats were upholstered like an old movie theater...rivets visible up & down the walls. It took off smoothly and rapidly...we leveled off early and I could still see buildings on the dark ground in the moonlight. It reminded me of being four years old and riding in the back seat of my father's 1950 Pontiac Chieftain. I found it Charming. BTW it seemed like we only needed to roll about 200 feet, before taking off lol.
What a beautiful aircraft. I was lucky enough to see it and meet you while you were in Jacksonville KCRG. Its sad to see her go. Too bad there wasnt a way to keep it in the family and let the boys carry on with the DC3. I love it.
Pulled all of my heart strings. As said, Grew up around these, Have never had the joy to fly on one let alone be the pilot. My Auntie was a Hostess & Radio Operator on them for Connellan Airways. Cheers.
Got to fly in one from San Juan Puerto Rico to Tortola, British Virgin Islands for a charter sailing trip in the late 70’s. All the details in the aircraft were pristine and original, which felt just like in an old movie! An amazing memory!
What a beautiful old girl. Hopefully she will end up as a museum piece somewhere, to be enjoyed as much (almost) statically, as she was in the air. RIP, sweetheart!
Will miss the DC3 with Dan in the cockpit. Awesome old bird. My first flight when I was about 5 years old was in a DC3 from Adelaide, South Australia to Port Lincoln, 66 years ago!

Very Nice! I should have flown the 3. Nice finish to single pilot that big bird. I think that even the B737 is being flown single pilot in this day and age with an occupant in the right seat operating the gear handle.

Not to the scrapyard i hope but to a new loving owner 😢😊
We hope
@@simon-oy6umbest part is it was sold to someone who he talked shit on lmao
My favorite type! The most photogenic airplane in existence. No bad angles. Even its shadow is gorgeous!!!! Such a workhorse too!
Constellation
B-17
You Sir, Are Not Wrong !
I have about 50 jumps out of a DC3 during military service, lovely old bird, thanks Dan
Always a special treat to hear just a taste of what goes on in a pilots head when they're flying an airplane. Thank you!

Beautiful flight check...and not a computer to be seen...outstanding!
DC 3 is a thing of beauty!

Nice video Dan. Sorry for your loss. But every pilot should get ready and realize when it’s time to change!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🇺🇸
That was wonderful. What fantastic old airplane and a "mature" PIC! Loved it.
Hello Dan,
Where I worked as a Paramedic "Williston lake BC" We did most of our medivacs in a single pilot DC3. I trusted our Pilot and the old tail dragger. I'm sorry you have to hang up and let her go. Wow. Amazing edit. The background music is awesome. I was always interested in planes but this video makes me want to fly one by my own.
Its all good! Very well filmed. Great production. Great airplane. One gripe: when the DC-3 passes over the runway camera, stop the music so we can get the beauty's sound. 👍
No film involved. Electronic cameras used. He was RECORDING, not filming.
@@The_DuMont_Network You're right; I'm old school so I meant 'very well recorded'. And edited.
Yeh..... this video was EPIC. To be loved by aviators and non-aviators alike. Great sound track. Let's see more. It's definitely a LEGACY piece.
My father, a US Air Force officer, flew the DC-3 throughout the '50s in the states and Europe.
He started out as a P47 pilot during WWII.
He flew C-47.
My brother was a pilot in the USAF and flew EC-47s in Vietnam doing electronic intelligence (ELINT) gathering. He was awarded a Distinguished Flying Cross and an Air Medal with two oak leaf clusters. Very proud of him.
Same aircraft...along with C-54...C-45...
What a beautiful bird you will still fly many times in your mind as you enjoy wonderful memories.
And you know what time it is now it's time to start lookin around!!
Thanks for the ride along! Fantastic airmanship and familiarity with that bird!
Well done Dan! Love the DC3, and I love your use of the checklists! Yes!

So glad I got to see this iconic aircraft at the triple tree fly in last year and took a tour. This is stuff that goosebumps are made of.
My Father flew C-47's out of Brooklyn's Floyd Bennett Field, always a great story to tell of each flight... sure do miss him.
I flew the DC-9 for years. You could still see the brilliance of Douglas systems engineering.
Seems the merger with McDonnell did the same thing to Douglas what the MD merger did to Boeing . Douglas aircraft went from a prestigious engineering firm to being part of a company obsessed with cost cutting.
Good luck with selling the DC3.
When one door closes another door opens.
I can’t wait to see your next adventure. Thanks for the last ride with you.
Great video Dan! I like watching you fly that Gooney Bird..Good luck with your future endeavors!

Awesome video! Thanks, DG!
That’s awesome. I’ll miss seeing you flying it.
You have to admit.. This is a great video.👍

Nice to see a professional pilot at his craft!
Top pilot. Beautiful plane.
Love this and made me sad for you at the same time. Thanks for letting us be with you on this flight ❤❤❤
Thank you Super Dan!
I was in an Air Force band in 1961-1964, we used a C-47 to haul our musical instruments and other baggage to and from musical performances.
A buddy of mine cherishes an old photo taken when he was in (what seems to be a C-5/DC3) one - as a band leader many moons back - Raphael Nunez - a true Mexican Troubadour up here in Canada for decades.. The « music » is really not necessary. Let us enjoy the sound of the engines !
I concur. So many videos have their wonderful footage ruined by unnecessary and inappropriate music...
I’ll keep an eye out for your music-free DC-3 video as soon as you post it, director.
Been rewatching "Band of Brothers" and watching you take off in this brought tears to my eyes! Thank you Dan!
As a pilot that got my DC-3 SIC type rating in that beauty I know it was tough to say goodbye.
That was a great video Dan, I love the music, it was very somber and almost sad, it also shows how much you love the DC-3. Thank you for sharing this ride with us.

Thanks for making this, Dan. What a treat! ❤
This plane helped win WWII and then helped rebuild the world afterwards and grow civil aviation we enjoy today.
What an impressive pilot!!!! My gosh so nice to watch thx
Dan, we will all miss seeing you fly that magnificent plane! Great video! I am sure part 2 coming.
A DC 3 what a beautiful sight and then carrying a very special passenger.
What a generous bird❤

Pulled all of my heart strings. As said, Grew up around these, Have never had the joy to fly on one let alone be the pilot. My Auntie was a Hostess & Radio Operator on them for Connellan Airways. Cheers.
You make it look effortless!!
Got to fly in one from San Juan Puerto Rico to Tortola, British Virgin Islands for a charter sailing trip in the late 70’s. All the details in the aircraft were pristine and original, which felt just like in an old movie! An amazing memory!
I can't tell you how many times I flew in and out of Springfield, IL, growing up, on an Ozark Airlines DC-3.
Beautiful plane. I got to see this in person, through the airport fence of course. But I love big radial engines.
Very good Dan, I am glad you are doing so well, after the landing mishap, God Bless you guys.
Dan..THAT was a beautifully done video. Thank you!
Flew as a passenger numerous times 1964 to 1967 on the DEW line, Baffin Island, Cape Dyer, Fox 5 and Fox Main. Loved it.
I grew up around both prop liners and jets the DC 3 is my favorite 😉
What a beautiful old girl. Hopefully she will end up as a museum piece somewhere, to be enjoyed as much (almost) statically, as she was in the air. RIP, sweetheart!
Thank You so much! Have you got more of that footage? THX 4 letting the brain control coming out right through the mouth of THE MAN in charge! 🙏💪👍
Beautiful
I grew up in these in the 1950s and 60s in Brazil. Loved them dearly.
Will miss the DC3 with Dan in the cockpit. Awesome old bird. My first flight when I was about 5 years old was in a DC3 from Adelaide, South Australia to Port Lincoln, 66 years ago!
Beautiful footage. What's next for Dan Gryder after the DC-3???
Great vid, pilot looks like Buck Owens, so cool and relaxed but totally in charge of the airplane!
Everytime I see a video with a DC3 I am stunned to remember that the first DC3 flew 32 years after the Wright brothers flight. What a leap in technology!
Hey Dan! I received my checkride November 29, 2022 at AMS airport. I live up near War Hill Park, which is about 7nm NW of KGVL, and I fly out of Lawrenceville (KLZU) and typically practice with a friend and fellow pilot at Jackson (KJCA). When I saw you were flying at Speedway, I finally felt compelled to try introduce myself to you. Hope you see this and I wish you and your friends a full recovery!
Great! Say hi whenever you’re around!
Some great video, thank you, Sir.
Was a passenger on one of these carrying 8000 chickens between 2 Caribbean islands. The birds emit a lot of heat and that cockpit was an inferno. Once we got to 3000 feet, it cooled and the chicks quieted down. Upon arrival I personally collected four dozens eggs from those coops. Was fun but I won't do it again.
This breaks my heart 😢💔
We have celebrated 80 years since Market Garden when these planes come into their own. I should say one of the times because DC3s are just wonderful.
Flew on the DC3 from 1969 to 1970 back and forth on my way to boarding school. Beautiful plane.
Awesome 😎
WOW DAN !! I once got to enjoy a flight in an ex C47 Mission Air ,Sun N Fun.
Very Nice! I should have flown the 3. Nice finish to single pilot that big bird. I think that even the B737 is being flown single pilot in this day and age with an occupant in the right seat operating the gear handle.
