I have a 2008 Pontiac G6 with the Ecotec. Normal maintenance has gotten me 280,000 miles so far. I love it!

2016 GMC Terrain 270,000km original owner purchased Dec 2015.
Now facing excessive oil consumption due to the piston rings, clogged PCV system, clogged catalytic converts and a cracked exhaust manifold.
Asked GM Canada who said they cannot comment but currently no recalls so all out of pocket. Absolutely lost on how to proceed other than driving it until it dies.

My friend's 2014 Buick with this engine just blew up at 120,000 miles. 😢 The dealer never warned her about timing chain failure.

I think you just saved me from making a huge mistake in buying a 2017 Equinox. The incredible price made me want to find info on what was wrong with it.

I had a gmc terrain, the problems I had with it was unbelievable. I was so disappointed that I became a Ford customer and I had never purchased anything but GM cars.

LE9. 100k Timing failure due to plastic cracking. Regular oil changes. It jumped a couple of degrees and thankfully did not nuke the motor.

I'd hazard a guess that most will see exhaust cam solenoid getting clogged with chewed up guide and guide bolt before jumping time.
At least that was in my case. 2010. 300k timing chain replaced. I've got a bunch of Blow by. I vented the crankcase vents to atmosphere. Cap PCV intake opening before throttle body. Oil consumption was one quart per thousand. Now I can get close to 3k miles. Mine spends its time interstate travel commuting 600 miles a week.

Such a shame because the vehicles themselves are pretty nice. There was a time when you never had to worry about a GM drivetrain.

Gas Direct Injection is the cause of the problems you cited. GM wants consumers to think it was just low tension rings, but all 8 model years have the problem. GDI causes extremely abradive soot and excxessive fuel dilution. This cause chain wear, clogging of pcv system and oil control rings. Is so bad for many manufacturers, they updated oil specs in 2020 to address the problems. GM originally programmed these Oil Life Monitors to go 10k+ miles between oil changes. Coupled with fuel dilution and soot, it was disaster. All forced upon them by insane CAFE and emission standards. Try doing some research rather then repeating the same info found on the internet.

Not true, do your homework before blabbering onn, the Z22SE is known for these issues, they are NOT direct Petrol Injection, they also had an oiler that reduced oil flow at idle unt they revised the primary tensioner too, that was an approx 2002 engine, so she is correct

@MeaHeaR Hey Meathead, I'm talking about the the 2.4l Ecotec. You are the one talking nonsense.

Yes it was the 2010 2015 engines. That direct injection is a killer. It seems malibu and equinox suffered the most. Transverse mounted engines as well but I couldnt tell you why.

I have a 2014 chevy Captiva . I got it used but wasn't a month till I found out it was going through lot of oil. Then the timing jumped and fuel pump went out , I spent $1,200. But the oil consumption has not changed so what can I do to stop it other that put a new moror

Yep, worst modern engine ever. I have one and I hate it. I've dumped tons of money into it and the malibu it sits in. GM's all time worst model years were the 2010-2012 models. Guess which one I have. 2011. Timing chain has been done once already. It's sluggish, it's underpowered, it was practically designed to break, it wheezes, it requires more oil changes than any car should. Do not buy an Ecotec engine from this model year. Go get a Toyota or something. Don't forget to change your camshaft position actuator valves every 20,000-30,000 miles too because those go bad. 151000 miles and soon I will probably need a new car. And god help you if you ever have to try to take one of these apart, just get a new car. I feel like GM owes me a brand new one just for the suffering over the past ten years.
