Just a fantastic training video. Doesn't get a much better explanation than this. I would add that even though the timing chain components and engine internals look great folks should do a couple more things do to the amount of work involved. As in better safe than sorry. If changing the timing chain assembly every GM tech I know says to AUTOMATICALLY do the balance shafts as well. Also with that many miles always install a new water pump. If it fails after 20k miles or whatever you have to do the whole job all over.

Chad, I watch your video on the timing chain replacement, you were very good and precise. The only negative was when you torqued the cam shaft sprockets you said to torque to 22 ft pounds and another 100 as a diy I did not understand the 100. Would have been nice if you went through that torque process. Thanks for taking the time to make this video. Bill R

    • @bigdnelyria
      @bigdnelyria 8 місяців тому +3

Think of a circle as 360 degrees. 90 degrees is 1/4. Look at the hands on the clock. At 12:00 the minute hand is straight up at the 12. If you move the hand 90° that puts it at number three. 100 degrees is going to be about give or take where the number 4 is. So when you tighten that bolt, you want to move that bolt about the same amount.

Pretty sure exhaust should be at 10 o’clockintake should be at 2 o’clock there will be a triangle on the intake and exhaust camshaft sprocket and should be in forementioned positions. Crankshaft keyway should be at high noon. Anyway that’s what it is on a 2010 terrain 2.4 L. And camshafts both lobes should be pointing in words down. If I have done my work correctly. If I have not I will be more than happy to admit I was wrong. Before you put it all back together with the with the covers off Put the bolt in The crankshaft and rotate it clockwise slowly to make sure your valves aren’t hitting your pistons. If I have gave any miss information which I’m pretty sure I have not you will not feel any resistance as you’re rolling over and if you would like to be sure put a spark plug back in the number one hole loosely and you should be able to hear the compression release to the spark plug continue to turn not much until corresponding timing marks lineup again. If they do then you’re golden put it together and enjoy your engine you’ll be surprised how well it will run. Don’t forget to change the oilAnd filter. Do you need fresh oil and keep an eye on the level every week two weeks blah blah until you figure out in 30 days how much oil you need to add every so often do not let it run low you’ll end up with the same problem again. Have a wonderful day God bless

I indeed have 3 cobalts and have owned at least 6 of these engines. I’ve done timing on one of them and can say if you follow this guys steps you will mess up as this motor is an interference engine… you should start on exhaust stroke as your timing marks should be in the 10 and 2 position before taking ANYTHING off. If you look closely at 20:42 you will notice the phasers has changed position by 180 degrees. If you’re new to cars or don’t have a ton of experience I would highly recommend taking it to a professional. Yes it is pricey but it’s cheaper than having to replace the whole motor…good look to anyone that try’s it. PLEASE USE A DIFFERENT VIDEO

When you set TDC in the beginning of the video you stated that the cam lobes should be facing up on the number one piston which is wrong. When you set TDC you have to make sure the cam gear diamonds should be facing at the and 2:00 on intake and 11:00 on the exhaust. I don’t know if you redid your TDC but when I saw you install the cam gears I noticed the cam lobes where facing down so idk what happened but people can be misguided if they follow those instructions.

Hey ive got a 16 equinox 2.4 auto awd. Its showing 3 codes i think, p219a, p0420, p0014, p0013 which is mostly timing stuff, fuel air mix, exhaust. it runs great one trip next time splutters everywere with lose of power until get plugs burning hot or something. Ive definatly gotta get a new hose that goes to use to be a pcv on Valve cover. But can you tell me what i need to do the timing completeley. lifetime warranty parts i dont like when their cheap because it means ill still have to do it again. If you have time id like to know what to buy and a fair brand something to actually last. Also my engine had the tube stopped offf on engine so lots seals and gaskets leak. What seals and gaskets that wont come in a kit can i replace while tearing into that part of the engine and any other things you would suggest changing instead of what i said? Any seals i can get to def needs done. it has abt 200000. people complains abt the 2.4 but ive not had to do anything until now with a lil over 200. ours has been great and we live in the WV mountians so its been used well. I hope you can find the time, Thanks !!!

Noobs/amateurs shouldn’t even think of advancing timing AT ALL. There are tricks to keep the cams from moving and ways to re install the sprockets without having to reposition the cams.

They are saying replacing the timing chain is not worth it, and you should get a whole new engine. The alarming thing is that they talk about it, they do not do it. The other option is me riding a bike and it taking long amounts of time to get groceries ext. I do not like the social aspect of not having a vehicle. Not being able to do activities like everybody else and being more capable in some aspects of my life. The lack of respect hurts my feelings sometimes. Many other people drive and do not want to give up the privilege. If they are not able to drive then they will not be able to go to work ext. They do not know what it is like to ride a bike everywhere or what it is like to have to ride a bike for errands.

Is this the standard 2.4L, as found in late '90 early 2000 model Chevy, or is it the newer Ecotech version? Anyone know.
Edit: for an extra $150 (Cdn) you could replace entire timing system; sprockets, chain, guides, tensioner. Even if chain is still "good" at 150k I'd still replace seeing as engine and cover already off.

I don't see in the video when and how the camshafts themselves are locked.
The camshafts have to be locked before the camshaft gears are removed, or am I looking at this incorrectly?
In every other engine, the camshafts are locked before the camshaft sprockets and chain are removed!

Before you take the timing chain off you can take a 15/16 or I think it’s a 23 mm don’t quote me on that anyway put it on the nut just behind the camshaft saddle or where it bolts down closest to the VVT sprocket and the cam will I think it would be advance with the wrench lightly do not force it if it does move that is a bad VVT sprocket they’re not supposed to move they are supposed to remain locked unless there’s oil pressure. If they’re very loose you can hold that plastic piece on the end of the VVT sprocket and actually turn it by hand. I hope this helps

When somebody tells you to change the bolts in the cams you can bet they don't have much experience, they say this same BS about head bolts.

    1. This oil was not changed all that often.
    2. This engine has definitely timing chains.
    3. I would replace the sprockets, Front Cover and the Front cover gasket. The oil pump is contained in the front cover and it definitely takes a beating on cars without goid oil changes.
