    Inertia’s tricks will come in handy if you ever come across a child scared of dogs. Seeing a dog doing a funny trick sometimes helps children see that that dog isn’t so scary. Inertia has a whole routine. 😊

      Best thing I ever did was teach my huge German shepherd boy to shake hands, wave and play dead. It was a hit with all the kids and even some adults who were scared of the "big bad German shepherd" when they first saw him. (He was a huge softy, but didn't look like it!)

      I agree so much! Seeing other trainers on YT makes it look so easy to train a dog and makes you feel so frustrated when it doesn't work for your own dog. Seeing him makes you realize that fails happen and that's OK. And it just takes time to properly train your dog! So much less frustrating this way!

      Kelly Sinclair He makes so many mistakes, it’s a pity he doesn’t learn from them. He has condemned Inertia to a life of wearing a harness and being tethered on a long line. Ever asked yourself why Inertia is always so keen to eat from his hand, even when she appears anxious and stressed? It’s not normal, unless a dog has had food withheld from it for a long time to deliberately make it hungry.

  • @Boscobel23
    @Boscobel23 4 роки тому +24

    I honestly can't believe anyone would disagree with this method of training. You are showing patience and understanding towards her whilst she's learning (something we all need when learning new things don't we?!). I have a reactive dog- we certainly have difficult walks and challenging days, but you have really helped me remain calm in situations that often make me feel upset and I know that her reaction is something she cannot help. I work WITH her, and the feeling that we both get when we make progress is so special. Your videos demonstrate just how important and rewarding it is to put in the work and not to just expect a quick fix. Sending thanks to you (and cuddles to Inertia because she's beautiful and doing so well)! :)

      I’m wondering what makes you think your dog can’t help being reactive?

    • @Boscobel23
      @Boscobel23 4 роки тому +4

      Audra Welsh in the same way people can’t help liking or disliking certain foods or preferences in life. If she reacts it’s due to her feeling uncomfortable or unhappy in the situation we’re in for whatever the reason, therefore not her fault.

    • @audrawelsh8467
      @audrawelsh8467 4 роки тому +5

      Hayley Hamilton I agree with that, people can’t help hating or disliking things and neither can dogs. My last dog never wanted to be around dogs if he couldn’t help it. But, you don’t allow people to start screaming and hitting others just because they are in an uncomfortable situation, so why would it be different for dogs? If a person doesn’t stop the police are called and they are sent to jail, so why do people say that you can’t discipline a dog in a similar matter?

    • @amyrex3575
      @amyrex3575 4 роки тому +4

      @@audrawelsh8467 it's true that reactivity can be trained away or drastically reduced most of the time. But using discipline on the basis that it works for humans is a flawed concept, human discipline doesn't translate into dog language/behavior. And it has all too many times created or worsened reactivity in dogs. So using smart, positive training not only avoids punishment fallout but is a completely viable way of changing not only a dogs behavior but their emotional response to things they fear or find challenging.

    • @audrawelsh8467
      @audrawelsh8467 4 роки тому +4

      Amy Rex And that’s why you don’t use human punishment. A lowered, commanding voice and a correction on the leash is almost always enough to get the dogs focus for half a second, which you can then reward. Being a balanced trainer, most of the dogs I’ve worked with would take months, if not over a year, to train the dog not to be reactive, while one or two firm corrections gives me enough control over the dog to train them not to be reactive while walking in a matter of weeks.
      Completely negative training is what can often make the dogs behavior worse and i agree that good trainer should not have to rely only on consequences.

      Just be sure to get one that has adjustable speeds so you can slow it down. They're pretty common nowadays. For practice, start out grinding something that doesn't matter at all, then use it to sand down your own or a friends thumbnail. That way you will get comfortable with it and have confidence before trying to use it on the dog's nails. :)

It's really refreshing to see you going through some frustrations that I and others have. One thing I have noticed since rescuing my dog a few months ago is that we as trainers/owners have to be flexible, patient, and understanding of our dogs. Trooper Lab you dont use shock collars you use ecollars which use the tens unit or leash pressure. Teaching Leash pressure is just letting the dog get to the end of the leash and allowing pressure to be applied with a slip leas or something similar and having the dog come back to you which makes the collar loosen and they get a reward. Crude explanation yes but a simple system that is more effective and easily communicated to the dog

      Practice while on leash even while walking at heel. Teach wait for dog to stop and stand. Drop leash and walk away from dog while maintaining the 'wait' it takes lots of practice. Once they listen while walking at heel off leash should be an easier transition for that command.

    Interested to hear the answers on this channel. Do people see this as the “right” way to train dogs? No corrections and bribing with food. I see the benefits from the human side (it make you feel kinder) but it seems like this way will only work with a food driven dog. Thoughts?

    • @leighburdick5007
      @leighburdick5007 4 роки тому +1

      jake sacco Yes, this definitely works best with food driven dogs. I have used his training techniques with my dog who is not food driven. A couple things I did was train when my dog was hungry so he was more food motivated. My dog also loves toys so I used toys a lot. This was more challenging because I had to teach “give” before I could really train anything else but now he’s great with training and most days I use toys as the reward. I think his training techniques are very versatile. They can be changed to fit your needs. I think the biggest thing is finding what motivates your dog. It might be good, toys, verbal praise, scratches, etc. I also found my dog is more likely to be food motivated if I use ground turkey or beef. This isn’t something I used too often but I did when I needed something to get his attention

    • @kerielwatson3197
      @kerielwatson3197 4 роки тому

      He's had many dogs and helped with other people's dogs. It can and does work but as with all things, individual personality matters. A dog that has no food motivation won't respond to food rewards, try toys or attention instead.
      This training is based on reward and distraction instead of reward and punishment/correction.
      My kelpie responds amazingly to zaks methods, and the use of correction or punishment actually caused her to become avoidant and start hating training.
      My German Shepherd on the other hand needs some correction as reward and distraction alone will not stop unwanted behaviour

Positive training is absolutely useless when we have to clean his ears (and he is a cocker spaniel). Since he came home, he HATES the liquid going into his ears. Each time he sees the bottle he growls. We've tried everything, being extremely gentle, being more hard, even yelling at a point, and of course treats, nothing worked, he kept growling and trying to bite us. So we took a light slipper and gave him a little knock, and he stopped. Now everytime, until he sees the slipper he would try to growl to avoid to have his ears being cleaned. We're not really happy that we had to use force, but also we cannot continue to deal with a dog that tried to bite and understands that if he growls and bites he would be ok with it because we wouldn't clean his ears.

You do it good sometimes, but others you keep walking and wait for her to go slower to reward her, which I assume can work but I believe it's slower because she is allowed to pull and keep walking sometimes

    Are you a artist? I’ve seen pictures of dogs but never thought you did them (I thought you bought them) But now I see one looking very much like inertia! These painting are very cool!

    I' m a bit confused. So you have inertia walk correctly during a training session. But what is the plan during walks outside of training?
    And how are you going to transition the training walk to become the standard?
    (Is this just preparation for when inertia becomes calm enough around 2 years of age?)

      TaelonSHU he doesn’t walk his dog he just edits a video and puts it up as a training video. His dog is 7 months old and can’t walk normally without needing treats. That’s not the way to train

      This is a really interesting question. For those of us who dont have a chance to get excess energy out by playing frisbee on a loose leash or run around on a fenced yard, what would you suggest as the energy depleting tactic before a leash walking session? And how to transition from a leash walking session into just a walk in the street? At least here in the city where people don’t necessarily drive cars at all (I don’t drive nor do I own a car) walking the dog on the street and in parks is a very common routine for many.

      Essi Santala you shouldn’t do a ‘leash walking session’. It’s important people understand that what you do in your every day life is the most important thing. It’s not about setting up sessions, it’s about going out and having fun with your dog, put them on a long line and just walk, let them explore the world and have fun, let them enjoy a walk, once you’ve made clear that walks are fun then you can start adding more and more structure but please stop worrying about trainin training training and start enjoying the precious time you have with your dog, build the relationship, give them some freedom, do fun stuf together and I guarantee that just having fun with your dog will make him like you and built the relationship and once the relationship is there, there is no need for obedience, the dog will then follow you and accept you as its owner. Just PLEASE have FUN that’s the most important thing and if you really have big behavioural problems hire a professional

      Essi Santala I have a 14 week old springer spaniel (with a crazy high drive) and have not done one leash session, I just walk and make sure the line is always loose. The walk doesn’t look amazing yet but it sure as hell looks a lot better than inertia’s. That’s because my dog understands that a walk is fun and walking with me is even more fun. You don’t have to use food or corrections for the dog to understand this, you just need your dog to like that’s it. My aunt had a dog that couldn’t do any obedience. I was 11 at the time and I absolutely loved the dog and he loved me. I would walk him everyday and he never once pulled me. Again it all comes down to just walking in a confident manner and having fun. People constantly look at their dog, talk to their dog, give him food,... just walk...

      @@essisantala4762 I have a very similiar living situation as Essi (although hes now 14 months old). I do know kong and intelligent games also help to tire your dog out while sparing puppy's joints. I do believe no matter how the dog walks on the leash, socialisation and bonding is more important (especially the first 6 months). Bringing him to different enviroments etc.
      I'm a bit confused with what the other person is saying (yeah, im not going to write your name :P). While I totally agree that bonding and having fun is the first thing to focus on (something that people that stress about training might forget). I don't think it will magically happen, except with the dogs age combined with a bit of self control. .
      To me it feels like the minimal is, don't accept your dog to pull on the leash (turn around or stand still), but i see Zak doing it differently.
      Although my biggest issue is that the other person that walks my dog lets him get away with everything and my dog freezes when he sees another dog and than jumps to the dog when their 2 meters away (labradoodle, mostly labrador). I started distracting him with a toy when we meet other dogs and since than he also walks really well without pulling, although i think he's constantly waiting for a toy. Another thing which i'm not sure is a factor is I walk him on another side than the other person.

    My puppy would turn into a hyper little monster if I did this. He is like a toddler that gets more stimulated if he gets tired, not less. I have found working with him when he isn't tired is far more productive.

    My dog thrashes to reach other dogs. She is always on leash outside, so I have to tug her away. It hurts my knees and shins, and it has to be uncomfortable for her, as I essentially, choke her. Yes, I turn, but often there is another dog at the other end of the street. (Help) Inside the house presents ZERO problem.
