Can you over walk a younger pup experiencing a growth spurt. With all those bones and muscles expanding is it possible to do early damage to them? I don't think in nature pup would go on a long pack hunt for several reasons, but I don't know.
What do you do when your puppy doesn't want to gently take a treat from you, but instead lunges are your hand for the treat, or bites and nips to get the treat?
After diligently watching the channel I didn’t walk my puppy until after completing Life Skills and teaching her how to walk, and now walking on a loose leash is one of her strongest skills by far. My friends were worried that if I didn’t walk her as an 8wk old she would never learn, but I’m SO glad we didn’t just slap a leash on and hope for the best. Such great advice in this one 😍
@@youshivk She was 6 months old when I started teaching her to walk in the Life Skills program. All our walks from 6 months to 1 year were training sessions rather than leisure walks. She’s 18 months old now and she has a really solid understanding of what I want from her in most situations, so our walks are 99% leisure and 1% reminding her of my expectations. I relied on the Life Skills instructors to tell me when she was ready for the next steps along the way, but I’m so glad I trusted their expertise because I now have a dog who can walk beautifully in any situation and gets to come to cafes and go on bush walks and do all the things I dreamed for her :)

I got my puppy at 12 weeks now 14 weeks , I am worried if I leave taking him for walk he will be scared of everything outside . He is scared just walking to front garden . Any advice would be great , many thanks 🇬🇧
People also need to be aware that until your puppy gets all their vaccines walking them in an area that other dogs go or roam can expose them to Parvo and other diseases.
This is how I instinctively trained my cat to walk on a leash. She was 13 when she learned and is a very good leashwalker now at 16! Some of the dog people in my area are jealous of how well she walks 😂
@@dewittkids7411 That means he is not used to the harness yet. Take the leash off and teach him that the harness doesn't mean that he can't walk. Try giving him treats or having him chase a toy to teach him that he can walk while wearing the harness. Put the harness on for just 5 minutes tops. Try training a few times a day. To some cats it feels like they are being picked up when they have a harness on their body. That is why they go limp. It can take them a few days or even a few weeks to get over that, but they will eventually! When he is used to the harness you can get him used to the leash and then to the walking inside the house before going outside with him. I hope this helps! It can take a bit of training to walk a cat on leash, but it is really fun! Just take it very slowly, because cats can get scared of it if you go too fast. Good luck!

We waited til our 8 week old was 11-12wks before taking her on a walk, & even w weeks of training inside she still pulls and sniffs and eats during training, I can't imagine how it would've been if we had started outside so early!
Love your videos. They have been VERY helpful in acclimating to a new puppy. We have been working on the skills for leash walking with our lab puppy, and she has done phenomenally. Our concern with taking her beyond our yard is germs or illnesses she may encounter while sniffing out everything in her path.
Just got my 4.5 mo old rescue. We've been practicing just going around the block. First few times he wanted to walk circles around me. He's getting better but I'll definitely be using this!

Not walking a puppy if you live in a city apartment with no garden, seems slightly unrealistic to me. Even if you have a park nearby, there comes a time when the pup will be too heavy to be carried all the way there - and if it's just slightly like mine, at a certain point he out right refuses to be carried anyway 🤣
I love your videos, but I feel somehting that could be really helpful is talking about the age of the puppy in the video to get a better idea of when we can adapt this teaching / training for our own puppy.
I have no enclosed garden so my 11 week puppy has been exploring on a long line since 8 weeks as he had to be on it even to go out to the toilet. now we are walking around our rural area a little bit wider it's no different to him and he's getting exercise and socialisation. I am just working on him looking or coming back to me for treats despite varying levels of distraction, at the moment.

SO helpful! My 5 1/2 month old Doberman is amazing with the exception of loose leash walking and I have felt like such a failure!! Curious if there are stages we should look for each month? Treats, toys and praise have so far been of ZERO interest outside for him, no matter how high value. Inside is a totally different matter.
Exact same story here, and our puppy is 140lbs. So good except outside! His nose takes over and it’s like he MUST investigate the smells (and sometimes follow them). Even steak or bacon aren’t that interesting outside.
Try setting aside a walk time to work with them. Don't expect to go anywhere. Just find a clear, safe spot and allow your dog to smell a bunch. Walk back and forth in this small distance, like 15 feet or 5 meters. Eventually, it'll get boring to them if there's so distractions and you're the best interesting thing. Try making unexpected turns and loops so they have to look at you to predict your next move. Reward anything they look and you can start walking in more straight lines. Put a name to the attention (look at me, watch me, here, attention, their name, etc.). Then go a little further outside the space and call their attention. If they give it to you, reward. If they don't, gentle guide them to the safe space a few feet before and just really try and reinforce their attention. It'll take some time, but removing them from some many distractions and new things will help. Eventually, you can try this exercise near a distraction, like a dog park, birds, people, bikes, cars, etc. Make sure to keep a good distance away and establish the space again. Repeat and try to inch closer to the distraction and be realistic, a lot of the time dogs aren't going to pay attention to you even after all this training when something very intriguing is in close proximity to them, so try to quit while your ahead and end on a good note, which can be a shortER distance away than before. Not that this works every time, every dog and situation is different, but it's pretty effective. ALSO do not repeat the phrase over and over, say it once then wait, they get it eventually and don't punish for not paying attention to you, it only shows them that being on a leash with you and when you say that word will get them hurt. Happy and safe training! :)
I use a harness and Flexi for non training socialisation walks, 6ft leash and collar for loose lead practice. I spend time charging the clicker for a few weeks before we even start walks. I need a strong reflexive response to the clicker to begin with.
I have two friends who squirt their dogs with water when they do something they dont like..i dont use that method at like it all. But wondered what you think about it

Yea, we often suggest finding a smaller, softer treat for them to try. Lil Ms. M had the same issue when she first came home, we suggested to switch it up and she is doing much better with a small very soft treat! Try this out, let us know how it goes! Happy Training! ~Dan
I have 6 months old Maltese shih tzu. When she turned around 4.5 months, she started not wantung wanting to eat her kibbles. Now, is even worse. Can you please advice what I can do?

Sorry guys - walking my 2 month old Labradoodle was fun from day 1. The pulling, sniffing and excitable behaviour were expected, no problem and in fact adorable. These were just funny challenges I knew would be resolved in his first 12 months of life with good training. He's now 5 months old and walks calmly on a loose leash 80% of time and is well socialised with other dogs and people. He's still fun to walk with. Do your clients not understand that a puppy is a baby ???
That's what works for you, but you realise that means 20% of the time your dog is pulling. That's a fair chunk of the time. You may find it beneficial to check out some information on "errorless learning".
@@annjeffree hehehe My dog is 5 months old and still a baby. In 6 months he'll be on a loose leash 100% of time. This fantastic success comes from learning from trainers like "Beckman's Dog Training". And btw "errorless learning" is an absurd fantasy for both people and dogs :)
Thanks for your reply. I'm well aware of Beckman's work. The man is a talented trainer too, but he, and obviously you too, miss a lot of the stress signals his methods produce in the dogs. And don't understand the potential negative consequences of using positive punishment to train animals. But I'll just pack away my 40-ish years of working with dogs, and wish you and your puppy well.

As an outsider who read this whole thread, I think you both sound dogmatic and arrogant. There’s more than one way to teach, guys. I for one started walking my Staffy pup early and while he’s improved a lot and I could continue walking him, it takes too much time to give him the amount exercise he needs. So I decided to not walk him for now and focus on fetch instead, which he loves. Now we’re both happy and he actually naps while I work. What’s funny is I doubt you’d talk to each other that way in real life. ✌🏽
How do you keep the collar and leash in the correct position? Mine is always turning around to the top side of his neck. I've tried tightening it but then it is a little too tight. Do I need a heavier leash maybe
We have a 4 month old lab, got her at 7 weeks and she is smart but stubborn! She still bites and nips, jumps up on everyone, has chewed up 2 harnesses and a leash and has accidents! We need help!!
Honestly, I disagree. Walking is the best form of exercise imo, not because it's extremely active, but because it's socializing and mentally stimulating. Carry treats with you, create good times, it's not going to be perfect and that's fine. Work as you go!
I think you guys mean the same. What she meant (as far as I understood) is to not go out with a short leash and expect your puppy to walk perfectly because you can't walk with a puppy as you would with an adult. The puppy is very curious about everything and it needs this time to process the outside world, also it will be distracted very easily. So having them on a longer leash (whenever it's safe) is best and for when it has to be on a short leash to take your time and not just try to walk... I hope you understand what I'm trying to say.
Any suggestions for rewarding a tiny dachshund puppy when displaying proper behaviors? Not sure how to give treats while walking when he's so low to the ground 🤦
I have the same issue! I just crouch down, I don’t know if I want to drop the treats on the ground. Not sure if that encourages to eat random things off the ground!
Is there such thing as too much crate time for a puppy? I take him out at least every two hours (he’s potty trained), but he goes in when I’m busy (like eating, during school, cleaning). How do you know if you are over using it?
It sounds like you are managing your crate time very effectively. At the end of the day we want our dogs to want to be in their crate. Every dog is different but if you are mixing it up and managing it with training sessions, you are doing everything you should be! Great job!!! Happy Training! ~Dan
Our puppy runs and hides when it is leash time. She does not like the harness but she needs it in her car seat to buckle her in. Please give me some tips.
I know this comment is older already but my guess is that she doesn't like to drive in a car and if you only use the harness when it's time to drive she might connect the two and therefore be scared.

Its never too late too train a dog. My doggo is a rescue and was a year old with no training, now he is almost 4 years old and walks next too me on the leash.
What I find frustrating about your methods is they rely heavily on food - Ive had two dogs who had little to no interest in food treats so this made it really hard/impossible.

I'd love McCann to notate the difference between a puppy from a random person vs from a good breeder who (1) starts babies' education with ENS (Early Neutral Stimulation) as recommended by AKC for decades because the special handling causes pups' brains to completely develop (2) introduces puppies to at least dozens of people coming to the place they live until adoption day as recommended by well-respected veterinarian Dr Ian Dunmar , including many children because their voices and movements are so unlike adults, and including many men because of (well that's obvious lol) (3) uses Puppy Culture or similar scientifically proven force-free confidence-building lessons to build up puppies' confidence and problem solving while starting a solid foundation of good manners (4) has built confidence in the puppies for basic responsibilities that adoptive parents need to continue building: kisses (no biting), four on floor (no jumping), sit, stay, down, off, voluntarily go to place/park, kennel overnight alone, accept grooming calmly (i.e. on a table), potty only on pads/litterbox/grass, wear collar and harness calmly, be comfortable on leash (minimal to no pulling)...
Hi McCann Dogs, so I recently got an 11 week old Havapoo puppy. I've had her for 2 weeks now and she just started to do something weird. She began to sniff the carpet and dig at it. She's even barked at the carpet! Do you know what I'm supposed to do? For now I've sprayed some bitter apple spray on the spot where she digs. But I'm worried that she'll eventually do it everywhere.
Hi!! I have a havadash 😊 11 weeks old!! She does similar behaviour with “digging” and barking at cracks in her bed or outside! We got her a bin of small rocks to dig in for inside our house and she really likes it!(easier to clean up) I think she will start to understand she can only dig there. Once it’s spring we plan on getting her a sandbox so she know she can old dig in those two spots!
Why take a chance? Using a harness as opposed to a collar is much safer. The collars can do damage to the dogs wind pipe from all the tugging. Later in the dogs life the damage can become a real problem.
Another excellent lesson! This is my go-to channel for very good reason. Kept having to go back and catch something I’d missed due to the cuteness of this puppy though! 🥰

My 3 month old puppy is doing well on her walks. She learning about her neighborhood, including city noises, plus she’s becoming more socialized.

Im picking up me and my partners border collie puppy up in 2 weeks soo excited!
That puppy is gorgeous. She looks like a bigger version of my black and white havanese, who is like a plush toy that come to life. So cuddly!

My pup is 7 months old and I’m experiencing similar problems except he shuts down-he seems to be overwhelmed and sits down and doesn’t want to move. 😩
I prefer dog on right hand side for walks in the city hoping dogs passing will be further apart so she can focus on me.

My puppy doesn't eat treats this fast. When I give her a treat she takes forever to chew. This distract her walking training. What can I do?
Could you try making them smaller?
Yea, we often suggest finding a smaller, softer treat for them to try. Lil Ms. M had the same issue when she first came home, we suggested to switch it up and she is doing much better with a small very soft treat! Try this out, let us know how it goes!

I have 6 months old Maltese shih tzu. When she turned around 4.5 months, she started not wantung wanting to eat her kibbles. Now, is even worse. Can you please advice what I can do?

Sorry guys - walking my 2 month old Labradoodle was fun from day 1. The pulling, sniffing and excitable behaviour were expected, no problem and in fact adorable. These were just funny challenges I knew would be resolved in his first 12 months of life with good training. He's now 5 months old and walks calmly on a loose leash 80% of time and is well socialised with other dogs and people. He's still fun to walk with. Do your clients not understand that a puppy is a baby ???
That's what works for you, but you realise that means 20% of the time your dog is pulling. That's a fair chunk of the time. You may find it beneficial to check out some information on "errorless learning".
@@annjeffree hehehe My dog is 5 months old and still a baby. In 6 months he'll be on a loose leash 100% of time. This fantastic success comes from learning from trainers like "Beckman's Dog Training". And btw "errorless learning" is an absurd fantasy for both people and dogs :)
Thanks for your reply. I'm well aware of Beckman's work. The man is a talented trainer too, but he, and obviously you too, miss a lot of the stress signals his methods produce in the dogs. And don't understand the potential negative consequences of using positive punishment to train animals. But I'll just pack away my 40-ish years of working with dogs, and wish you and your puppy well.

As an outsider who read this whole thread, I think you both sound dogmatic and arrogant. There’s more than one way to teach, guys.
I for one started walking my Staffy pup early and while he’s improved a lot and I could continue walking him, it takes too much time to give him the amount exercise he needs. So I decided to not walk him for now and focus on fetch instead, which he loves. Now we’re both happy and he actually naps while I work.
What’s funny is I doubt you’d talk to each other that way in real life. ✌🏽
An you train too many things at one time? Or would that be overwhelming for them?

How do you keep the collar and leash in the correct position? Mine is always turning around to the top side of his neck. I've tried tightening it but then it is a little too tight. Do I need a heavier leash maybe
We have a 4 month old lab, got her at 7 weeks and she is smart but stubborn! She still bites and nips, jumps up on everyone, has chewed up 2 harnesses and a leash and has accidents! We need help!!

Honestly, I disagree. Walking is the best form of exercise imo, not because it's extremely active, but because it's socializing and mentally stimulating. Carry treats with you, create good times, it's not going to be perfect and that's fine. Work as you go!
I think you guys mean the same. What she meant (as far as I understood) is to not go out with a short leash and expect your puppy to walk perfectly because you can't walk with a puppy as you would with an adult. The puppy is very curious about everything and it needs this time to process the outside world, also it will be distracted very easily. So having them on a longer leash (whenever it's safe) is best and for when it has to be on a short leash to take your time and not just try to walk... I hope you understand what I'm trying to say.
Any suggestions for rewarding a tiny dachshund puppy when displaying proper behaviors? Not sure how to give treats while walking when he's so low to the ground 🤦
Mark the behavior (clicker or word) and drop the treat onto the ground immediately after
I have the same issue! I just crouch down, I don’t know if I want to drop the treats on the ground. Not sure if that encourages to eat random things off the ground!
Is there such thing as too much crate time for a puppy? I take him out at least every two hours (he’s potty trained), but he goes in when I’m busy (like eating, during school, cleaning). How do you know if you are over using it?
It sounds like you are managing your crate time very effectively. At the end of the day we want our dogs to want to be in their crate. Every dog is different but if you are mixing it up and managing it with training sessions, you are doing everything you should be! Great job!!!

Our puppy runs and hides when it is leash time. She does not like the harness but she needs it in her car seat to buckle her in. Please give me some tips.
I would reward her when she goes near the leash. Make the leash associated with things that make her feel rewarded
I know this comment is older already but my guess is that she doesn't like to drive in a car and if you only use the harness when it's time to drive she might connect the two and therefore be scared.

Its never too late too train a dog. My doggo is a rescue and was a year old with no training, now he is almost 4 years old and walks next too me on the leash.
What I find frustrating about your methods is they rely heavily on food - Ive had two dogs who had little to no interest in food treats so this made it really hard/impossible.

Hi! We are hopefully getting a puppy very soon, so I’ve been watching a lot of your videos. My question is: at what point do you stop with the treats? I know dogs are good motivated but I don’t want to for the rest of my life be carrying treats to make my pup do anything
Don’t get a puppy then.
You’ll need the treats for a while, then you can start giving them randomly while giving her commands and that will phase them out a little bit.
I'd love McCann to notate the difference between a puppy from a random person vs from a good breeder who
(1) starts babies' education with ENS (Early Neutral Stimulation) as recommended by AKC for decades because the special handling causes pups' brains to completely develop
(2) introduces puppies to at least dozens of people coming to the place they live until adoption day as recommended by well-respected veterinarian Dr Ian Dunmar , including many children because their voices and movements are so unlike adults, and including many men because of (well that's obvious lol)
(3) uses Puppy Culture or similar scientifically proven force-free confidence-building lessons to build up puppies' confidence and problem solving while starting a solid foundation of good manners
(4) has built confidence in the puppies for basic responsibilities that adoptive parents need to continue building:
kisses (no biting), four on floor (no jumping), sit, stay, down, off, voluntarily go to place/park, kennel overnight alone, accept grooming calmly (i.e. on a table), potty only on pads/litterbox/grass, wear collar and harness calmly, be comfortable on leash (minimal to no pulling)...
Hi McCann Dogs, so I recently got an 11 week old Havapoo puppy. I've had her for 2 weeks now and she just started to do something weird. She began to sniff the carpet and dig at it. She's even barked at the carpet! Do you know what I'm supposed to do? For now I've sprayed some bitter apple spray on the spot where she digs. But I'm worried that she'll eventually do it everywhere.
Hi!! I have a havadash 😊 11 weeks old!! She does similar behaviour with “digging” and barking at cracks in her bed or outside! We got her a bin of small rocks to dig in for inside our house and she really likes it!(easier to clean up) I think she will start to understand she can only dig there. Once it’s spring we plan on getting her a sandbox so she know she can old dig in those two spots!

Why take a chance? Using a harness as opposed to a collar is much safer. The collars can do damage to the dogs wind pipe from all the tugging. Later in the dogs life the damage can become a real problem.
