Agreed, appreciate the response but would you have left sooner in hindsight? Perhaps after the nice interaction with the white and tan dog I would have though a leash and straight out because it's hard to see how she then ended up under the bench but it may have been difficult to do that with the layout of the park. It's important for the public to be able to recognise the moment before the moment they went too far and I don't know that this is clear enough. Everyone is guilty of the 'no more one more time' mistake where you can only see the right time looking back at it, but the reaction video could have been the opportunity to clarify it slightly.

I'm so happy that you put a response up. Dogs need to learn! They need to make mistakes, feel fear, excitement and everything else. I was shocked at a certain comment that went on fot far too long that pointed out mistakes like they knew your dog better than you. And my simple response to them is if you don't introduce your dog to these situations, how will they ever learn and become more confident? And rewarding a behaviour by picking up your dog and removing her from the situation? Well I've never heard that one before. Being a responsible dog owner means remove your dog from a situation if it gets out of hand and taking responsibility. Well done.

I was very surprised that there was so much criticism in the comments. I do also think that some people easily forget that we don’t see the whole trip to a dog park but the edited version, which may skew our view of when was Inertia looking nervous and make us think it was because of the previous clip although time may have passed or not all of the things we see might even be shown chronologically. I do think you do a very good job with editing, but this is something I always try keep in mind and try to give the benefit of the doubt to the makers.

I think it's cool to try to respond to those with concerns when you didn't have to, especially since I'm sure a lot of it was not courteous. I think you perfectly addressed your own criticisms in hindsight, which good trainers should always do. The parts of the guideare divided: part i know your dog part ii the seven commands part iii cures for 7 behavior problems. Each chapter presents a topic, a dog's story, and a "what to do". @@lagottessa Hmm. I have been seeing some people drop in to be very critical. I don't know about you, but I have a VERY good boy. And he has been in similar situations to this dog and reacted in similar fashion. He does not like it when dogs come up to him quickly (maybe he thinks it is aggressive). I find dogs that are more willing to play (run around quickly) and not snip or try to push him over he does very well. I don't understand why people think dogs sniping or bulldozing over dogs is supposed to be okay, because it isn't. That GSD was too aggressive, end of story. I have not much cared for this Zak guy myself, but watching a few of these videos has shown me that my dog experience is natural (which it didn't feel that way when I was watching dog videos and how perfect all those dogs were, more like they were in perfect situations).

Some of you commenting don’t even see how your dog responds to other before going to the park and the same thing happens. No one was harmed and they learned from it. Your dog is going to encounter stressful situations and you work together to make them as comfortable and normalize to that particular issue as possible.

You’re right, sometimes dog don’t act how we expect, but 80% of the time there are behavioral signs ahead of time to signal when a dog is going to react. He as a trainer should have recognized that. There were SO many signs that she was uncomfortable and didn’t feel safe, when the owner doesn’t step in to protect the dog, the dog feels the need to protect itself aka it snaps. He knew she was reactive outside of the park so why would he ever think to bring the dog into the park? He set her up to fail

Inertia isnt aggressive, she is insecure and reactive. Its a common issue in young working-line herding breeds. Ive seen it a million times. These types are slow to mature and are hypersensitive/reactive to nearly everything. Rough handling will exasperate any problem they are already having. Genetics play a strong part in your dogs behavior. Inertia's temperament is great for a farm dog but not so great for a city dog. She'll get it eventually lol. Anyone with any experience with these kinds of dogs knows that for 6 months, inertia is extremely responsive given all the activity. My more drivey cattle dogs were a terror at 6 months in comparison. Zak's just got one with some extra zest lol

I wouldnt call conditioning my dog to wear a chain or prong collar "punishment" i put a lot of work into making sure hes obedient and focused and he loves working with me. Its not even an issue of being faster or slower, training is *more effective* if you allow for correcting and discouraging unwanted behaviors as opposed to just ignoring them. Thats just me though ive got no issue with him not liking tools i take issue with him going out in public and possibly putting an unproofed dog in a situation where it could get hurt. If inertia had a solid heel and was 100% on top of recall and didnt react to people or dogs than more power too him, keep sticking treats in her face.

swiggity swooty I am a dog trainer. It is my job to understand dogs, and I dedicate a grand chunk of my free time to studying their behavior and body language. This includes differences in behavior among certain breed groups. Albeit I would no longer so readily label her as reactive(tho she has a high possibility of becoming reactive if she continues to be thrown into situations she’s not ready for), I still 100% can tell that this dog is extremely nervous and fearful.
She is not confident in herself and is showing clear signs of being fearful of the dogs around her. Again, she was not ready to be in a dog park yet and Zak really should have been able to see that from before they had even made it to the gates. She was showing clear signs of distress and was unable to refocus on Zak because she was so distracted by her concern about the other dogs. This “training” session should have stayed at a point far enough away from the dog park that Inertia would be able to refocus her attention on her handler. She should have never been allowed near the border of the park, let alone inside.
She was reacting out of fear and insecurity. She was already *WAY* over threshold, and the other dog(s)being so pushy caused her to react with her teeth. She wasn’t herding, that was not herding instinct, that was pure nerves and panic. She was trying to get him out of her face because she was afraid of him, and because her owner allowed her to remain in a high-stress situation without paying any real attention to her body language that screamed she would rather be anywhere else.
She does not need more face-to-face introductions, she needs gradual exposure in order to build up a neutrality about other dogs. Starting far enough away from the dog park that she can see the dogs but not be distracted by them, and *slowly* working up to the point where she can comfortably focus on zak *next to* the park. Notice how I didn’t say *in* the dog park. Inertia is not a dog park dog, she does not desire playful interaction with large groups of strange dogs. Taking her to a dog park would be setting her up to fail and react poorly, and it should be avoided. She needs to learn that other dogs being around her is not something to be worried about, and that she can rely on her handler to make sure she’s not in a dangerous situation. She needs neutrality, and she she needs confidence, she does not need to love other dogs.
And if Zak wants to sign her up for herding classes, then cool I guess! But that would have nothing to do with this particular situation, as her reaction had nothing to do with wanting to “herd” the other dog.

Lots of people seem to think their dog should like EVERY dog and don't understand why they don't get along with some. But people don't always like every person they meet, so of course dogs would be the same way. I don't blame Inertia for not liking those more rambunctious pups running right into her lol

Some dogs (like one of my dearest human friends) thrive in crowds and make as many friends as they can and they gain their energy from this socialisation. And both kinds are perfectly ok as long as you recognise what your dog is telling you that they need and like. Zak was right there with her managing it as needed the whole time, he didn't keep her there too long and he stated that he doesn't bring her to the dog park all the time. Just starting to watch this now. I see a young dog that communicates that she’s very fearful in this environment. I wouldn’t be in a hurry to close the distance towards the fence. You see and hear how rapidly she barks as the other dogs approach. Also, if you look at her body language, when she is barking from her lack of confidence, she lowers her posture, and moves slightly towards you for reassurance. If she were my dog, behaving this way, she would have never been off leash. The leash, after all is a communication tool between you. My humble opinion is that you really need to learn to read your dog much better, and not be in such a hurry to have her conquer her fears. Keep her on leash, and maintain whatever distance she needs to feel more confident.

Wow! I really appreciate seeing how even someone so experienced can make mistakes. Like you said, hindsight is 20/20, but I do think getting her out of the park sooner would have better. I love watching your videos. They are so true to the the real puppy raising experience.
My pup is 11 weeks old now, and is doing really well. I just took her to a well controlled puppy socialization class, and for the first 10 minutes she was under a desk, but after that she slowly came out and then slowly began interacting. There were at least 15 other puppies there. We as owners just walked at the perimeter of the room.
We were instructed not to interact at all with the pups, not even to look at them. There was an instructor that walked with us who kept close watch for any threatening behaviors and then just gently steered the offender away. It was really awesome because the dogs really figured out what was appropriate. My pup was doing laps by the end of the 30 minute! It was great! The nice thing is the free classes are offered every week, so we will keep going!
But puppy biting is a big issue....I will continue to work on this with as much patience as I can. Thanks for the valuable information, and keep up the good work!

You just have to be ready to get them out of there. Your dog picks up on your energy so if you’re nervous and scared about a fight so will your dog. Just be cool and calm and most of the time it’s fine but I’ve definitely had some baaaad experiences there. Sometimes it just doesn’t work.

This was the most helpful video I’ve ever seen. I have a border collie who acts just like yours! The tips you gave were super helpful.

Thank you for keeping it real-more relatable than so many other dog training videos that leave me feeling like the video has been edited to make the trainer look like a dog magician. I liked the video; thanks for sharing this very realistic situation.
